Gomez, doing a crossword: No, that's strange.
Weems: What's strange?
Gomez: The answer and the number of spaces don't match up. Something is wrong with this puzzle.
Weems: What's wrong is your answer.

Who’s your favorite Mew voice actor? Since the first pokemon movie was my introduction to Mew (and I watched it over and over and over), I’m a big fan of Koichi Yamadera. She gave Mew an innocent, playful, mysterious vibe to me. But I also like Satomi Kōrogi because she made the voice extra naughty and playful which really fit Mew in that movie (She also voices the adorable kitten Chi in the “Chi’s Sweet Home”/“Chi’s New Address” anime, which is just super feel good).
First off, because of this ask I went looking to see who voices Mew in its different appearances, which landed me watching a video on how to get all its photos in New Pokemon Snap. And it melted my heart! So thank you for that! ^v^ (Great source of reference photos~) I never found who voices Mew in that game though.
Koichi Yamadera IS Mew to me. Any time I imagine Mew saying Mew or giggling with its hands over its mouth, it's in that voice. (I have to point out though that Koichi appears to be a "he". Which shocks me because I thought Mew was always voiced by women.)
I do enjoy Satomi's Mew voice and have fond memories of it, but what I really love about it is that they're have different voices. That, along with the different way Mew is drawn, led to me always believing that they were different Mews, which means there's more than one Mew out there. And that made my little heart (and imagination) happy! :>
(Side note, Satomi Kōrogi is Ushio in CLANNAD! I watched the English dub, but that still makes me giddy. ^w^)

hi it's time for a dive into * .✧ ro's ancient oushirou art ✧. * on this lovely oushiversary!!
(aka i don't wanna reblog any of this art directly from the source bc a number of the posts include my old name ^_^ also there's a lot and i'm already spamming y'all with old art KJNASFKJN)
↑ early college era -- still hadn't taken coloring classes, but i had taken anatomy classes and was using my favorite boy as practice outside of classwork :o)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ that first one was from when i was drawing my own dakimakura cover bc i figured honeybee would never deliver on an official one (and also a nod to the fact that i had just had my first taste of nutella and it broke my brain (positive)). and i could be wrong but i thiiiink the second one was around when the official one was announced...? maybe?
i just needed a daki so badly. when i FINALLY got my hands on the daki cover, pillows of that size weren't standard over here, so i actually had to make my OWN dakimakura by sewing two standard pillows together... in a larger case comprised of a sheet... which i did all by hand bc i didn't have my sewing machine at the dorm... i was Committed. 😊👍🏻✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ The Sillies. i'm saving everyone from being subjected to all of the oushipug drawings but. ousheep.... ough... and i included the third one in my nick-gave-me-a-pass-to-gush post, but i'm putting it here too bc. it's cute. :3c
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ practicing with the yoh yoshinari sections in the PSG design books. good stuff, highly recommend taking a look if you're into very interesting western-japanese animation style mixes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ shortly after getting my hands on after winter -- the bouquet is a drawing of a scene from his route ;w; he's so sweet... and so clumsy... top left is from the time when i was watching the end of clannad during all-nighters while working on assignments. can you tell just from that sentence that i was Quite Unwell at the time? KJASNFKJN. (still love miku!oushirou so much tho. honestly love this style. i want to study my art from around this time at some point, maybe regain some things that were uhhh Firmly Discouraged, to put it nicely, during my later college years.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ doodle dumps! first one is from shortly after playing AW, second is from maybe... junior year with a couple from sophomore year? just a lot of style practice. third is mostly from the end of college when i was. struggling kJNASFJKN. SCAD Profs I Will Not Name made me feel like shit for drawing "too anime", then a couple of years later said their "anime" students were their favs, so my style was. very mixed and not confident. skjdnf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ random gifs! wish i could find it, but i also have one somewhere of him blasting off team rocket-style KJASNKDJN and another of him getting scared from a horror game? movie?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ first anniversary pic!! and a reblog meme of "draw your favorite character wearing what you're wearing right now", and i was dressed to drive down the street for some late night gas station food w roommates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ selfship-before-selfship "wife blog" art from 12yrs ago!! kazuaki, the series's artist, has drawn catboy oushirou in design docs before, so he'll sometimes pop up in my art as well ksjdnfnkj. also, naturally, self insert art babey. and he's being a little asshole ksjnd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ the one on the left is like. right around when i graduated?? the one in the middle was for his bday, probably 2020, when i was just starting to get back into art, the one on the right is a college sketch that i redrew as practice to ease myself back into drawing in 2020.
Tumblr media
↑ bday cupcakes for the bday boy!!!! around like. 2013 or 2014? i used to do a lot of baking for his bdays before i had dietary restrictions kJNASKJFN, though i sometimes sneak a little treat in on his bday if i can find one.
maybe as i sift through posts on my old blog i'll collect all of the weird art i've done and post them in chunks like this. nice way to put them someplace without spamming people with old curiosities ksjdnfk.

I uh...
Finished Clannad.
Tumblr media
I have...no...words.
First off. Ushio insisting she wants to go on a trip with her father despite being so weak and fever-ridden as so not to even be able to dress herself or eat solids.
Okay, i can live with that.
Second!! Her clearly struggling to walk in the cold as snow starts pouring from the sky and Tomoya insisting that he carry her only for her to deny even as her step grows more sluggish.
Her collapsing straight into her father's arms asking where she is, why it's so dark and her last words are "i love you, Papa..." before PASSING AWAY AT FIVE YEARS OLD IN THE GODDAMN COLD IN THE FATHER'S SHE'S ONLY JUST NOW GOTTEN TO KNOW'S arms.
THIRD!! him calling her name desperately, his voice echoing into the void as he pleads for Nagisa to save the one and only source of his happiness. The only one he has left.
FOURTH!!!!!!! HIM BEGGING AGAIN AND HIS HEART JUST COLLAPSING UNDER THE GRIEF.
(Cut to me taking my face into my hands, almost tearing at my skin and bursting into an hysterical, relentless and heartbroken uglysobbing yelling "not them too... NOT THEM TO!!)
(cut to @sophyroth needing to hug me cause i was sobbing too loud for my own health)

modern anime fans complain about delays and changes and stuff between seasons but i swear NOTHING can ever beat what happened with Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
This anime was one of THE top anime of the 00's, easily topping the lists of "must-see" anime series. I mean this thing was HUGE in 2006 when it came out, think almost peak Homestuck levels! You couldnt set foot in a convention without seeing weebs performing the ending theme song dance (Hare Hare Yukai if you wanna look it up), and the sailors uniforms from the series were everywhere. This was right up there with Yaoi Paddles and Deadpools in terms of Convention Things, and it had only one season despite having PLENTY of other light novels in the source book series! It was just really well-done. Kyoto Animation, the studio behind it which is now one of the biggest names in anime, got its reputation almost entirely because of it (And Lucky Star and Clannad which came out right after S1 of Haruhi). One of the reasons it was popular was the unique air order of the series, that in its original airing the episodes were out of chronological order, allowing for a chaotic watch that manages to have better flow (at least, many claim as much, ymmv). So fans were divided between watch orders, but season two was inevitable, and indeed, they announced it was in the works...but didnt announce any dates or anything.
But then, three years later, one of the channels in japan announces its re-running the first season, but the part where they say how many episodes they plan to air, they put double the first season's number. FOURTEEN more, to a total of 28! Nobody knew for certain, because like I said they didnt announce a release date, but speculation was that the extra 14 would be season two! Anyways, the first season starts airing in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, which was, of course, a highly controversial move...But then!!! On the eighth episode, an entirely new one airs, confirming that Season Two is in fact happening, but mixed into season one in a chronological order. Fans proceed to lose their shit.
BUT THEN. The second new episode airs, and its covering a light novel story where the protagonists are caught in a time loop! Fun, right? Except it doesnt resolve itself by the end of the episode. Oh, thats fine, it'll resolve by the end of the next one, right? WRONG!! In fact, Episode Three is the EXACT SAME EPISODE as EPISODE TWO, but re-animated from different angles. This continues for eight fucking episodes, dubbed the "Endless Eight", and the only major difference is in the final episode when they break the time loop!
WHICH MEANS. KyoAni dropped the second season, UNANNOUNCED, mixed in with season one in an unpredictable manner, and OVER HALF the "New" episodes were the SAME. FUCKING. EPISODE. ON REPEAT!!!! By far, this was THE BIGGEST season two troll in anime HISTORY and NOTHING in even your worst anime fears could come CLOSE

Horimiya really is the best romance since Toradora!
And it's not just "Toradora! but not quite as good." There are tons of those out there already. No, Horimiya is something else. Instead of being about the long prelude to a relationship, it's about the whole process of a relationship forming, developing, and maturing. It's also a true slice of life, dipping into the lives of its characters rather than putting the characters into a story.
The premise is simple enough. Popular high school girl Kyouko Hori and quiet nerd Izumi Miyamura have no reason whatsoever to interact. An actual nice guy move by Miyamura happens to bring them together when they're showing their private faces. Far from an active social life, Hori spends virtually all her free time on housework. Miyamura has the piercings and tattoos of a delinquent, handily explaining his reserved style of dress at school.
These shared secrets establish an immediate companionship between our title characters. For various reasons, Miyamura continues to visit Hori's house until it becomes a habit. Over several months they get to know each other's quirks, likes, and dislikes. Eventually, this domestic intimacy develops into a young romance. There's no whirlwind here, nor sudden escalation — it's simply the natural next step in their relationship.
Said relationship doesn't develop in isolation. As they grow closer, Miyamura becomes linked in with Hori's social circle, and expands it in turn. Each of their friends is fully realized, experiencing their own desires, disappointments, mistakes, achievements, and growth. Not everyone gets along all the times. Sometimes they hurt each other, or let themselves be hurt. No fundamental attribution error is to be found here. The characters are people, and people have reasons for the things they do and the way they are. If a character is loud and attention-grabbing, there's a reason for that. The same goes for one who is quiet and reserved, rude and confrontational, or kind and overly generous.
Pacing and Storytelling
Horimiya isn't telling a story with a set end goal it needs to speed toward. Moments of high energy exist, but the characters aren't sprinting from situation to situation. They're just going through life, facing the mundane daily struggles and social consternation that comes with it. It doesn't feel obligated to force characters into relationships in order to tie up every loose end, nor is every (or any) character arc implied to have reached some final state. After every milestone comes another day. You know, like in real life.
Art, Animation, and Music
Horimiya's art style is distinct without being over the top. It has slightly uneven lines, giving them an organic feeling. The color allows the important characters to stand out without giving them too many Obvious Anime Protagonist features.
The signature feature is the whited out background and colored character shadows that highlight the small but important events. These moments are rarely if ever high drama, so the background change serves to focus your attention when it's important and clear away any distractions.
The music in Horimiya is strong as well. It makes good use of a handful of incidental tracks, and the OP is well matched with the art and shows off the animators' abilities well.
Horimiya: Piece
The original anime adapted the source material efficiently, focusing on the parts that most closely surround the core relationship. Given the constrained episode count and already sedate pace of the main story, this was the right call. Horimiya: Piece collects several more stories that the original adaptation cut for time.
Conclusion
Horimiya deserves to be a classic. When someone wants to get into anime and they're interested in romance, this is should at least be in the top five, maybe the top two. Not every show needs to tackle big issues like Fruits Basket or wring pathos from irreality like Clannad. When you get down to it, all you need is two characters who brighten each other's lives and all those around them.
Score: 9/10. Watch it.
Recommendation: This is for everyone. No exceptions.
Comparisons
OK, we need to talk about Toradora! There are a number of superficial similarities — the high school romance premise, the shared secrets that launch the story, the misunderstood main characters, and a title created by approximately fusing the principal protagonists' names. When it comes to the important things, however, they could hardly be more different. Toradora! is intense, dramatic, and follows a storyline that traverses distinct steps in getting from each checkpoint to the next. Don't get me wrong, it's full of subtle and quiet moments, but it's the larger-than-life characters and deeply impactful moments that make it what it is. By contrast, Horimiya builds its characters slowly. We learn about them through how they learn about each other, and it's them learning about each other that deepens their relationship. In the end, Toradora! and Horimiya are so different as to not need a head-to-head comparison after all.
Hyouka is another slow-and-steady anime. It shares the slice-of-life high school experience background with Horimiya, but it keeps the cast and premise constrained to the four members of the Classic Literature Club and the mundane mysteries they unravel together. With twice the episode count to work with, it really takes its time with each arc. Like Horimiya, it accents certain important moments with a special artistic flourish. The point of contrast here is that by lacking an extra binding agent pulling the cast together, Horimiya gets to show that sometimes people hang out just because their lives bring them together and they find they like it that way.
One of the things that makes Saekano so great is the way it develops the title character, Megumi. Every other character is a big personality from the start, but Megumi is just a regular person. Instead of having her component tropes announced from a mountaintop, we get to know her by watching how she changes. Somehow, Horimiya pulls this trick with nearly every character. Truly incredible.
Final Thoughts
I have this fantasy, the "what would you do if you won a billion dollars" plan. I would get a degree in English and Japanese, become an English teacher in Japan, and go to Akihabara at least twice a month. Horimiya made me update that fantasy. Now I also want to be the advisor to the anime club at that school so I can get even just one person to watch Horimiya when it matters.
I watched this at the wrong time in my life. Unfortunately, the right time would have been before it came out. I should have read the manga fifteen years ago. The anime should have come out when I was in high school instead of now. If this had hit me at just the right moment I honestly believe it could have changed my life (very much for the better). Who knows, maybe it still will.

Some sounds and anthology raws
I’m doing my best to try to obtain the CD that was released today... But in the meatime, let me use this blog to share and preserve some hard-to-find, obscure things from the past as well! First of all, as I was looking through old files, I came across a few stories from some comic anthologies I’ve previously talked about, which I had completely forgotten to have already scanned. Have a link to a folder. They are untranslated, but if anyone has any specific request, feel free to ask. And now, here are some short audio files, mostly from references to Rolo by other sources rather than Code Geass itself: ・ From R2′s Room #5 (May 2008) AUDIO FILE Well, we start with one that does belong to official Geass stuff. “R2′s Room” were brief videos where different voice actors talked about an episode of R2 each time (Daichuu shows up in episodes 5 to 8, so you can hear him talk about Turn 5, 6, 7 and 8). The audio clip focuses on the scene where Lelouch “teaches” Rolo how to hold a knife properly during Turn 5:
So... Rolo and... Well, the relationship between Rolo, whom I voice, and Lelouch, has taken... another small step forward, would it be right to call it? Well, Rolo, after all, he still suspects Lelouch a bit, and just when he was thinking “Should I kill him after all...?” and grabbed the knife like this...! “That’s not right, is it, Rolo?”, he[Lelouch] said, and took his hand like... “The way you use a knife is like this”. And when he did that, Rolo was like ”Ah! Yes, I’ll be careful...” immediately... Rolo, you know, became attached to Lelouch so quickly, and in that moment, even though he could have kept quiet about it, he brought up that “My Geass has a weakness”. So yeah, at this point you can see that he’s totally hooked, huh.
As a side note related to this, you might have seen the term はぁん in lots of old Japanese art/blog posts about Rolo (even though it’s no longer as referenced as it used to be). That word - well, “interjection”, originates from a magazine interview, where Daichuu was talking about the same Turn 5 scene and said:
He(Rolo) does think “Maybe I really should kill him.” I’m sure that he’s still uneasy. Wondering if Lelouch’s love is real, and so on. But as soon as he receives some physical contact, he goes “haa~n” and is quickly won over (laughs).
Even though it's only a written interview and no fan was there to hear what exactly that 'haa~n' sounded like (in R2's Room, what Daichuu says is more like 'Aah,' right?), the way it's spelled creates the impression of a cute and also kind of unnecessarily suggestive reaction. Thus はぁん became well known by Rolo enthusiasts on the Japanese side of the fandom.  --------- ・From the radio program Sayonara Zetsubou Housou #49 (6th August 2008) AUDIO FILE Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei radio program with A LOT of info on its wiki, due to the radio program itself containing even more pop cult references and inside jokes than the source material. Hiroshi Kamiya announces that it’s time for today’s farewell message, which, as requested by a listener, is...:
Daichuu: "After thoroughly being in despair, I will be thrown away like a ragged cloth!"
If you're familiar with Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, then you'll recognize the main character's catchphrase "I'm in despair!", which here is combined with the borozoukin line. Also, the listener requested a line which is written in the passive voice, since Daichuu/Rolo would be the one to read it (I mean that it’s no longer “I’ll throw you away” but “I’ll be thrown away”), but still included Lelouch’s てやる, so it sounds a little weird. Almost like Rolo is determined to be thrown away, like he’s saying it with an “I’ll show you how I get thrown away!” tone. --------- ・ From the radio program Nagisa to Sanae no Omae ni Rainbow #44 (8th August 2008) AUDIO FILE Also known as “Clannad radio”. This one doesn’t have Daichuu, but you can hear Kikuko Inoue (Cécile Croomy) saying “I’ll throw you away like a ragged cloth,” as requested by a listener. --------- ・ From the radio program Sayonara Zetsubou Housou #50 (13th August 2008) AUDIO FILE Daichuu saying “Za waarudo! Toki yo, tomare!”. Then Ryouko Shintani adds the disclaimer: "This radio program is a work of fiction, and the appearing characters, groups, organization names, and Rolo's Geass are fictitious." --------- ・ From the radio program Seiyuu Do (25th March 2010) AUDIO FILE A radio program where voice actors and actresses are interviewed. At some point, Daichuu introduces the next song that will play: Well, my character’s... It’s based on my character, I mean, it’s a song that played during my character's final moments and is a very moving piece, so please listen to it. By Hitomi: ‘Boku wa Tori ni Naru.’ Man, if only Daichuu would sing his own version of BokuTori in Rolo’s voice...  --------- ・ From the radio program Music and Comic Plus (4th February 2010) AUDIO FILE Daichuu saying “Please, treat me like a disposable rag” (and the radio host reacting with “Cuuuuuute!”). Yes, the person who requested this must be pretty mean, but then again the entire program has rather indecent lines...  --------- I also newly added the audio clip of Lelouch saying “To prove that the fact Shirley and Rolo lived had a meaning...” to this post, since I’d previously only included the transcription. That’s it for now. If anyone found this sort of post interesting, there’s more audios from old ads and such here!

Fashion Brand SuperGroupies Offers CLANNAD Watch and Bags
Tumblr media
Fandom-forward fashion brand SuperGroupies makes it their mission to offer one-of-a-kind character goods: stuff you can integrate into your wardrobe that looks good while also being recognizable to fellow fans. Their latest line is inspired by legendary sad-game-turned-sad-anime CLANNAD, and is modelled off heroine Nagisa Furukawa's iconic school uniform.
At the forefront of the collection is a mechanical wristwatch (33,000 yen) bearing the insignia of Hikarizaka Private High School. The blue and gold color scheme with double red lines mimics the school's winter uniform style. And on the back, the title of the series is emblazoned on a transparent backing. Both the front and back of the watch let you see the workings ticking over:

"Qualia"
Sunlight. Silky curtains gently covering eyelids.
Christmas lights and distant memories.
Skin as soft as butterfly wings.
To be alive is to feel alive.

A Single Cherry Blossom Petal
translated lyrics for this song: https://youtu.be/ftil0iicKQk lyrics translation source: https://www.animelyrics.com/game/clannad/hitohiranosakura.htm I walked with you one time, on this slope blooming with cherry blossoms You were a person who was like a single flower petal I stood in the place where I chased you in a dream You then tell me to live without having regrets Let's give the name "life" to that place where our story begins On a street where we continuously struggle, suffer, lose things, and go on foot The day when you swore to always be by my side Brings a winter with a distantly blowing wind If this me who knows they want to give warmth Turns around, there will be the long past months and years But the coming spring is wrapped in a gentle fragrance And and a single flower petal flutters, looking down over me I'm now, once again, ascending this slope blooming with cherry blossoms

Of my current watch list, the feelings are:
Clannad: Kind of neutral. It’s still not “my kind of story,” but it’s grown on me but also I’m ready for it to conclude.
Legend of Mana: I like this one! It’s a modern series but isn’t trying to grimdarkify or videogamify its fantasy (particularly impressive when it’s based on a video game) nor make its protagonist a reborn isekai boy. It’s just fantasy.
Maria the Virgin Witch: As of the second episode things have gotten a lot more complicated but also a lot...nastier. I’m scared it’s going to go places in its plot that I won’t enjoy at all due to my own background, but I remain cautiously optimistic for my own enjoyment and still heartily recommend it in general.
What If...?: I’ve written two blogs on my complex feelings about this show.
Inukami: Low end of neutral. It has the vibe of a lot of old anime, but that’s not enticing in and of itself when I have direct access to the source material. Like. I could just watch Urusei Yatsura if that’s what I want. I really could.
Samurai Girls: Also low end of neutral. Far more style than substance but it’s a LOT of style...but also it’s very low substance.
Netsuzou Trap: Probably the worst of what I’m not outright setting aside. It has a train-wreck appeal, and also each episode is like 6 minutes of actual episode (9 total with 1.5 on each end for OP and credits). I seriously think the fact that I don’t have to put up with much of it at once is one of the things that has kept me from pitching it with others that have annoyed me.
Don’t Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro: It’s gone from angering to kind of standard romantic fluff. In terms of how much I like it, at this point I think it’s on the upper end of neutral. I can generally trust that an episode will be a pretty fun time.
Vermeil in Gold: Also upper-mid. It’s just shifted to new villains, which I’ve seen handled well and horribly in various past shows. Cautious optimism. I do appreciate the amount of actual communication occurring in romantic conversations, including stuff like “I’m relived to hear [your motivations], because I was thinking you felt [x].” That stuff is important! I’m always happy to see it when there’s room in the plot.
Slayers: Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but despite its low-budget look Slayers is really good. The other thing to keep in mind is where the field was when it came out. Like, this wasn’t getting compared to Demon Slayer when I first decided how good it was. It was being compared to the Super Mario Super Show. Slayers is really good.

for ppl shitting on me in the notes of the autism girl post abt the shows i included: I'd love to tell you i only finished 1 out of the 7 anime and it's lain ok I'm not including your fucking generic blorbo #47 bc I'm not a fucking neet and i haven't watched most of the shows you're talking about. "you forgot blorbo #420!!!" no i didn't bc idk them. post was literally just for blank, bug-eyed autistic asf anime girls and the 9 photo format is the only thing that looks good on tumblr lmao.
sm1 accused me of putting in "3 perv anime" bc they were salty that i didn't include a character from a show I've never watched. tbh creature, lain, and espurr are excluded bc no sexual content in their sources.
-chobits i completely get, the show is objectively shit. i just like the character
-nge i can understand but simply labeling it as "perv anime" is reductive as hell.
- haven't seen chunnibyo since I was 11 so idk about that one.
-havent seen haruhi since i was 14 but i remember there being distasteful jokes. not anywhere close to chobits level gross
-havent seen azumanga daioh at all, just read the manga when i was 14, and there were off-color jokes as well but nobody in the notes had issues w that
-literally haven't seen clannad since i was 15 and only got 10 episodes in lol. no i don't remember any of it
