To be honest I didn't put much thought into it, but the general idea is that at 15 y/o Hiccup found a dragon egg that hatched into Toothless. IIRC there's at least one village more up north than Carvahall so that's our Berk in this AU.

So Hiccup takes care of Toothless as he grows up while hiding him from the village, until the evil king's (Pitch?? Idk) army finds them and attacks Berk. Stoick and Hiccup have a heart-to-heart, Stoick heroically sacrifices himself, yadda yadda, and Hiccup and Toothless are forced to leave.

Meanwhile, Jack is a young elf who was responsible for carrying the last dragon egg around Alagaesia to find the new Dragon Knight, together with other elves (the guardians). Problem is Jack lost the egg two years ago and has been banned from the forest as punishment. He's desperately searching for the egg so you can imagine his surprise when he stumbles upon our boy Hiccup, now 17 and still hiding from the king.

Jack accepts to bring Hiccup and Toothless to Ellesmera so they can finally get officially trained and learn Main Plot Stuff.

Also when they're still traveling, Jack and Hiccup dont really like each other that much at first? But then battles happen, lessons are learned, deep conversations are shared and little by little they warm up to each other.

I think a lot of Ricky and Gina shippers are upset about the hate they received during s1 and are happy their preferred pairing is finally canon after the racist remarks made against Sof then and are valid. Though most Portwell shippers didn’t engage in the R/R shipping discourse because they don’t ship neither. Some people didn’t even start watching the show until s2 came out like myself. I only kept watching for Gina and EJ. Ricky and Nini didn’t stand out enough for me.

I became a big fan of the show BECAUSE of Portwell. Before that, I was a casual enjoyer. I kinda shipped Rini, but I truly did not care enough about anyone to actually be called a shipper. In S2, I fell in love with EJ and Gina separately, as characters and their arcs. Then, the Portwell storyline was introduced, and I was so invested. I was actually kinda glad when Rini broke up, since they had been presenting a bunch of problems. It was a crappy way to break up, the problems seemed easily fixable with mature conversations, nevertheless I didn't care enough, as I said.

I started tuning in every week to see if EJ and Gina had gotten closer, or if anything had happened now. They are the reason why I liked this alphabet show in the first place. I didn't join the fandom on Tumblr until S2 was done because I wanted this blog solely to rant about Portwell.

I am really sorry that a lot of Rinas got bullied during S1, I am. But it's not fair that they come hating on us now as if we had anything to do with it. I won't deny that there are hateful Rinis turned Portwells out there, or straight up hateful Portwells, but that doesn't mean every single Portwell is like that.

Most Portwells, in fact, don't care too much about other ships.

I've said before that I was a Rini, and I'm not contradicting that here, I want that to be clear. I did like them together, but I was in love with Olivia and Josh's friendship more than Ricky and Nini's relationship. I considered myself a Rini because I liked Jolivia, mostly. I did not care enough about the characters, if I'm being completely honest.

Thanks for your reply, I agree that their dynamic was unexplored, sadly. I think Chibnall is a competent writer but he seemed uninterested in writing the characters' relationships. It was mostly just about the plot. Do you think that's just his style or he was just sort of scared of writing something more complex for the characters?

I don't think he was uninterested in trying to develop the characters or their relationships, I just think a lot of it wasn't handled that well. Not sure what his preferred style is as I haven't seen his work outside of DW like Broadchurch.

Before I go to bed I wanted to share my thoughts. Today I thought about taking Gohan on cute little dates to do normal stuff. Since he was always studying or training in his younger years, I wonder if he’s ever been skating? Or even rode on a go kart? YES!!!! Remus is genuinely SO unhinged just thorough POA alone and I think it’s criminally underrated. I feel like, because of the ‘Dumbledore making Remus prefect to keep Sirius and James in line’ people have forgotten that Remus Lupin was a Marauder too. He was not a soft bookworm who would be all rational all the time and get them out of trouble or whatever the fanon characterisation is now. Sometimes I feel like some people want to make him out to be the ‘Hermione’ of the group but I really think he was anything but that. Sirius only described him as ‘not so much an idiot as him and James’ because he never took part in their feud with Snape, but that doesn’t mean he was mild-mannered. I really do feel like he was just another chaotic teen and fit perfectly with the other Marauders. I don’t enjoy much some fanon characterisation for this reason, he feels a little meek and I’ve never imagined him as such.

Also don’t forget that he showed up late on his first day of classes and then taught the students a spell to shoot used chewing gums up Peeves’ nose! LOL

All This Time is Gay™️

Ok, joking apart, for me, it's the song with the strongest queer subtext on the album. It's not as easy to interpret as OTB was on Walls. The song also fits other interpretations in line with the general themes of the albums (love, friendship, hope, growth). As usual there are no right or wrong answers, but here are some of my thoughts.

I don't have much to say about the first verse, except that 'I'm tryna find the words to say for ages' is reminescent of Defenseless.

Now onto the pre-chorus.... I'll be honest those lyrics are the most mysterious on the whole album for me.

And I keep on building mountains hoping that they'll turn to gold

I'm not sure I understand the metaphor. But the image that I get are mountains are obstacles; he's doing something that he knows will be difficult. He keeps hoping the mountains will turn to gold, meaning some sort of miracle will not only make the obstacle/hardship disappear, but it will turn into a treasure, into something that one only hopes for. In short, he's a hopeless romantic and hasn't given up on the idea of love. But that love is not easy to find/reach.

But the truth is, I still doubt that what I do can get me home

Even with all his hopes and ideals, he's not sure that he will succeed, that it will be enough. The concept of home here is interesting - home as in the place where you are truly yourself, the place where you belong, the place that you usually share with the person/people you love. He's not sure he'll ever make it home, no matter how much he tries - tying in again the idea of external obstacles, that love, loving and being loved are not easy.

When it gets cold / Oh, sometimes, sometimes, I lose my hope

When it gets cold, when you're alone, you lose your hope. You wonder if you'll ever find someone to love and who will love you back. Again with the idea that love is hard thing to find.

Our eyes meet / And I can tell that you're the same as me / It's the way we / It's the way we see ourselves through walls of trees

This verse has the strongest queer subtext because it's just... obvious. You're in a room full of people and you see one person who is just like you. It's the way we always recognize people like us, through the crowd. He's not alone.

And you keep on building mountains hoping that they'll turn to gold / But the truth is, you still doubt that what you do can get you home

The verse is repeated but the subject changes from the narrator (I) to his interlocutor (you). Thus saying the other person is in the same situation as he his. The experience is shared, universal.

But the friends we make, the love it takes / It's worth, it's worth, it's worth the pain The friends we make, the love it takes / It's worth, it's worth, it's worth it all this time

No matter how painful the experience is, it's worth it for the friendships (community); the love it takes to be truly yourself, to love who you wanna love, it's worth it; all this time you're doubting, feeling lonely, hopeless, it's worth it in the end and you should not give up.

TLDR: love is only for the brave
