Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii bestie, i dunno if you like The Crane Wives, like the rock band, but as of late i simply cannot get them out of my goddamn head. And then, i had an epiphany: so many of these songs exude major zukka vibes. Like not in the way youd think, probably, because in my head they're about the very specific Zuko who is just like. Cat's in the Cradle: Song fic, title based on the song, or something else entirely?

It's not a song fic, per se. The title is definitely based on the song though. It's a post season 4 fic, but with Eddie as a former lab kid. But a failed out one. They were certain he had a power, but they never managed to engage it, and he escaped ... sort of.

His power is shapeshifting, but it only engages under extremely stressful or dangerous situation. And then he only shifts to a version of himself that he's already been. Conveniently fully healed, of course. In the case of the start of the story, he climbs out of the Upside Down looking like a 10 year old, and he has never been able to actively use his power so he's stuck like that. Shenanigans ensue.

So the title is because of how the song jumps through different stages of a child's life and the dad lamenting about missing things, and Eddie's getting a lot of do-overs for those stages and probably wishes he wasn't.

Wayne's a big part of this fic, though, so maybe it's more for him.

Also it's uhhhh like 30k written. 😬 And I have great ideas for where the plot should go but I'm kind of stuck in the middle bit.
