FanFiction Recommendations

before I disclose my favorite Pedro Pascal character-related fan fiction here, a few caveats and disclosed biases: I’m a woman of a certain age.  I was your average English lit major.  I’m the dork who - upon listening to Jewel’s debut album and hearing the lyric “you can be Henry Miller and I’ll be Anais Nin” in the mid 1990s  - legit hauled my ass to the local public library and looked up Anais Nin - using the Dewey Decimal system - to read her elevated smut.  Right now I’m a content but exhausted, ragey American woman in a mid-life crisis.  I hate bullshit, I have an ok attention span, I scroll/read after the family’s gone to bed.  

if you look at my semi-neglected Tumblr page, you’ll see I’m relatively new to the Pedro fandom.  What a privilege to dive into really superb writing.  This is clearly not an exhaustive list and reflects my tastes (and to each her/his/their own)!  But if you’re an exhausted parent in a mid-life crisis and have no time, this may be for you! 

in no particular order...

@fuckyeahdindjarin - masterlist - Cee describes herself as a writer who pens romantic comedies - and she does a stellar job with them - but she sells herself short and fails to mention the sex scenes she writes are hot.  especially love the consent series (dieter bravo), the grays 2-part series (frankie morales), and of course, the ongoing joel miller/pin series.  a delightful mix of angst, sweetness, spice.  and a thoughtful writer with an inclusive mindset. 

@absurdthirst - masterlist - if you told me Keri has a few stories published in several “best of erotica” anthologies, I’d believe you.  good smut is fucking hard to write.  this is great smut.  this is smut you read and then take a cold shower afterwards or do whatever it is you like to do to get yourself off.  it’s smut that even as a non-smoker and knowing all the terrible health risks you may think goddamn I need a cigarette.  I'm partial to a few Javier Pena and Agent Whiskey pieces, but you’d be satisfied reading any of her stories.

@something-tofightfor - masterlist - Rachael should give a master class on how to write the best slow burn.  Her Joel Miller stories stand out for several reasons including - 1) she thoughtfully incorporates elements of the original canon/game into her fanfic which is uncommon in the PP fandom (from what I’ve seen/read at least), 2) every Joel story/chapter is compelling and well imagined.  Her current series on Tim Rockford has me on the edge of my seat and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.  And judging from the titles of her stories, we have similar music tastes (ha!). 

@disgruntledspacedad - this writer hasn’t updated in several months, but their Javier Pena multi-chapter fic (and folks, there are MANY out there) called Better Love is the one that kept me going and going and wanting to read more (see mention of short attention span in a tired mama above).  being in the healthcare field, I also arch my eyebrows out of curiosity when someone weaves medical stuff into their writing and wonder what line of work they do.  (yes I'm a terribly biased nerd, I’m a sucker for when someone puts a f!physician reader into their PP-character related drabble).

@jomiddlemarch - she is a great friend and a gifted, amazing writer who always makes me wonder “how does she do this and how does she do this so well and so quickly while the rest of us plebes are just getting through our day.”  she writes for MULTIPLE fandoms (and judging from the notes on her posts, I think her readership is more into those than Pedro and the Last of Us but it’s ok!), and started writing Joel Miller and an OFC (she created!) named Grace Yang (NOT ME - but maybe there’s a chance she created this OFC to shut me up since I’ve been rambling on and on about how besotted I am with Pedro 😂).  If you’re into OFCs, read her stuff.  Check out the (ongoing) entire series on her AO3 here.  Here’s one story that you can find on her Tumblr.  Two of the five stories are Ted Lasso crossovers - all her stories are written so richly and so layered - she’s the star in your writing workshop who’s showing and not telling - I’m still thinking about how there’s so much to unpack in the latest one. :)

👋🏻 hello! Spookily enough, I answered both of these here earlier, however it's given me to think of some other things I want to write.

👻Is there a new genre you'd like to write?

In keeping with the crime theme, maybe mystery? It'd be cool to do something that has a slow burn of playing out plot wise that isn't a relationship? I don't know if there'd be much of an audience for that here - but would be cool to explore. Also anything without angst, would be nice to find somewhere between there and the cheese of my seasonal Hallmark trips to Maplewood.

🛏 Is there a new trope you'd like to write this year?

I think I'd like to explore quite few new ones this year - I think it'd be a push out of my comfort zone of pre-exsisting relationships. Maybe I need to go find a checklist of tropes and slowly work my way through them this year... actually, I think I might go do that now!

OKAY. First of all, let me just say that I LOVE what you’re doing with this whole Winktober concept! It’s very clever of you, and it’s been fun seeing how you bend the prompts juuuuuuust enough. Secondly - you are now two for two when it comes to writing tropes that I typically don’t seek out/avoid altogether (the first was “only one bed” with Pats, and now I can officially add A/B/O to that list!) And even though this is only a few sentences, you managed to pack SUCH an emotional punch. I usually add a little sneak peek on these lists, but I’m not going to do that with this one because I don’t want to give anything away. But if I did, it would be that last line. Because damn. That’s going to rattle around my noggin for a while.

This was so good! I loved everything from the plot to their masks to the Things that happened in that library - my word. The descriptions of his voice were definitely spot on and the way that you incorporated both of these prompts was really, really well done - especially the twin tables and how you chose to have these characters use them ;) And when he tells her what he’s there to steal? HELP, I’M SWOONING SO HARD! My answer would be same. And then that ending? Excuse me are you trying to destroy me? Because... consider me d-e-s-t-r-o-y-e-d.

Kinktober - Sensory Deprivation & Food Play

Before I start I just think it would be prudent to warn anyone with a strawberry allergy to consume this one at their own risk. You know what? Anyone who has every eaten a strawberry or looked at one or conceptually knows what a strawberry is? You’ve also been warned, because...  *insert dizzy face emoji here* Okay, that’s done. NOW! Oberyn Martell is basically all of the kinktober prompts on a pair of legs, but the two that you chose to use for this one? They were PERFECT for so many reasons. Oberyn is all about finding pleasure and experiencing all that there is to feel and see and do in life. He is decadence and excess, but he’s also primal and hungry. He’s used to being the one in charge. He’s used to steering things. But the way that they trade power here and get to see different sides of each other and of themselves is amazing.Every second of this is such a thrill for both of them. And I have a feeling that this is only step one on this new adventure they’re taking. Also? The way this ends? My soul left my body during the smut. But it hopped back into my empty shell just to smile and scream about the upcoming meeting! ;) I flipping LOVED this, Rachael!

Hey Rach!! thanks for popping in

My day was alright (kinda mundane if i'm honest). Took a nap after feeding the pups, did some grocery shopping for lunch, and the heat in the afternoon hours has been bearable. been talking to some friends and catching up (i'm trying to relearn how to be an actual person and interact with others, it's slow going but it's going). I currently have 2 google docs open and am jumping between the two. am also binge watching the last season of drop dead diva (again). also been discussing tattoo ideas with my brother and sister, so that's always fun.

as for an unpopular opinion......i'm not too sure if this fits but it's a hill i'll probbs die on. The Solo movie wasn't worth the hype. neither were the sequel trilogies. the only "recent" movie that in my opinion matched the energy of the original star wars trilogy is rogue one. hell the prequels did a much better job of tying in the the origin story of the skywalkers than the sequels could ever hope to imagine/achive with their "plot twist". (also, the star wars movies titles are wrong but thats a discussion for another day)

If you could temporarily add only that you’re 18+ it would be already fine, it’s just a lot of writers block minors due to their adult content (by asking their followers to specify their age in their bio), so we don’t want to accidentally assign minors to them.

Bloodlines is a very self-indulgent Cyberpunk vampire AU, taking place in a timeline where V never loses her job at Arasaka & meets Goro under different (but still not ideal) circumstances. I haven't worked on it much this year, but it's a concept I love and can't wait to get back to soon.

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope you’re all having a good week so far. I didn’t get to accomplish as much with my writing as I would have liked this week (bummer), but I did get the chance to read some truly great stuff by other writers (stunner), so without further ado, here are three things that I read that made me say “wow, that was great!”

Jack ‘Whiskey’ Daniels

ITS AN ANGST. 

So I am not exaggerating when I say that this one absolutely gutted me. This look at future Jack after he’s lived for so long with this all consuming loss is just absolutely heartbreaking - but it’s done so well and so realistically that its so much more than just a sad cowboy story. It’s a look at a man who  is trying (and failing) to deal with an enormous tragedy, but it’s done very cleverly through the eyes and assumptions of outside viewers. Its a short piece but it packs a huge emotional punch. Prepare yourself for the hard hits if you read this one, but believe me when I say that it is well worth it.

Ezra (Prospect) x GN Reader

I READ THIS 4 TIMES. 

WOW. Okay. So first of all, the concept of this one having been written as a TIMED CHALLENGE just blows my mind!! (it’s part of a very cool challenge called writer’s iron chef and I can’t wait to read more from others who participate in it!) I was sucked in from the summary -  Is it more intimate to share breath than to share a kiss? (um, hello, that is that hottest fucking question, like how dare you ask such a scintillating question and then write such a beautiful answer?!) - and remained completely enraptured through the whole thing. The way that Ezra is described and depicted is so spot on and as lively and loquacious as he is in the film, and reading this (4 times) only made me fall even more in love with him than I already was. It may be dangerous and risky to spend so much time on the Green, but I would do it in a heartbeat if it meant being connected to and sharing oxygen with him.

Frankie ‘Catfish’ Morales x Female Reader

THERE IS A (glorious) SMUT.

THE WORLD’S GREATEST VACATION CONTINUES... and it continues to heat up, too. This story has so far been a major delight to read. I legit feel like I have just stepped off the beach every time I read more of it, and Beach Frankie has been my favorite summertime daydream lately. This is one of those stories that is all encompassing and so immersive that you can truly get lost in it - and who on Earth wouldn’t want to get lost with Frankie for a while? And the way that he’s written is just perfect, because all of his core characteristics are not only intact but expanded upon - like how the way that he’s quieter compared to the rest of the guys points to him being less sure of himself than they are, or how the fact that being a father is important to him leads to him being very intentional about how he talks about his son and what Reader’s seeming acceptance of Elijah’s place in Frankie’s life means to him. (one of my favorite moments in this one was when he asked Reader to hold onto the gift shop bag containing a shirt for his kiddo, because to her it was like yeah of course no problem my purse is huge but to him it was a Big Deal.) And look - the smut in this story? It is off the damn charts like I needed a big ass glass of water after reading this and I am still trying to cool off. Frankie and Reader may have a lot to figure out regarding where they go from here once they hand their rental keys back in, but they have got things down WELL in the bedroom, THAT is for sure. With only a couple days left before they’re separated by literally thousands of miles, there’s still a lot that can happen and a lot that they need to discuss, and I cannot wait to see how it all plays out for them.
