#some of character studies ive read over from people in the fandoms are interesting
You know....
Ive seen star wars....like all the older movies....
But ive retained like no information about them outside of common pop culture references
Like one year on May 4th there was a channel doing a star wars marathon and my dad had it on in the living room all day
And I sat in the living room and watched all of them cuz my best friend at the time was really into star wars
And all I remember about that day is random out of context scenes from the movies and extreme boredom and being so understimulated the entire time that I spent like half of one movie hanging upside down off my couch
So for all intents and purposes I did not watch star wars

ive been hearing a lot of legitimate criticism of will wood and his fan base from people who like his music, but see him as a pretentious white guy, and his fanbase as an extension of that.
now i havent been in the ww fandom v long, but given the depths i have gone in it i feel at least somewhat comfortable saying im not sure exactly where this impression is coming from.
i see him writing very eclectic erratic and idiosyncratic songs, and people having a variety of interpretations of them, and i can see how that might come off as pretentiousness, especially bc some of his fans really do cross a line in terms of a gatekeepy parasocial attachment to will
but i haven't really seen anyone going THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO INTERPRET THIS SONG YOURE STUPID IF YOU DONT SEE IT or smth to that effect
i acknowledge tho that there is also some legitimate background to this perception, bc what i have seen is:
-will playing characters live and joking w his audience in ways that are often either easily misinterpreted or clearly just someone with extreme mental health issues
-will being maybe mildly annoyed at how his fans often... over analyze his songs and upset when they overstep boundaries, and sometimes expressing that in non ideal ways.
-wills fans being incredibly obsessed with him and his music, which to the outside observer can be annoying i think (but honestly this to me reads more as a bunch of nd ppl w who have hyperfixated/have a special interest related to him)
-the lyrics to wills songs all being very confusing, especially the farther back in his discography you go, and his fans acting like their meanings are obvious on a first glance even when they arent (which is all the time)
-will pulling references from sources that can be seen as pretentious and off putting, esp when coming from a white guy (taoism, it's always sunny, modern psychology, 'classic' films, name dropping authors of philosophy, etc.)
-wills stances often being contrarian and often (especially on first glance) seemingly being that way purely for the sake of being contrarian
-will explaining his stances in fancy and grandiloquent language (a note on this one in particular: i think of this as not really a sign of being pretentious, potentially bc of my own struggles w it. i often accidentally use a bunch of complicated words and descriptions that wouldn't make sense to me if i was the one hearing them, not because im trying to be exclusionary or come off as ✨intelligent✨, but bc it was explained to me in those terms and i went through the process of studying it in that terminology and being told i had to use that terminology, and now im too dumb to translate what im thinking back into language that's actually comprehensible)
but i feel that a lot of these things are really overstated in how often they happen. by and large, i think a lot of this response is a misreading of the facts that his fanbase is really passionate to a somewhat obsessive degree, will is very passionate about the things he likes and the things he believes in, and both will and the majority of his fan base are pretty mentally unstable and/or neurodivergent.
from what ive seen, will isn't trying to be pretentious in any way and is legitimately just expressing himself. his fanbase despite their occasional issues are ultimately pretty much just very passionate people. and also he does not hate them! to quote the man himself
"guys, i don't hate you! stop telling people i hate you! stop doing that; i like you people! 99.999 percent of you are really good, and 99.999 percent of the people who piss me off are just going through it! i don't know where people are getting this idea the whole like 'will wood hates his fandom' yeah i know i said i hate you all in that song but... you know, it's a song! i like you guys."
if you have counter info/arguments though id love to see them. im always looking for new perspectives, and as i said ive *just* started listening to will wood and looking into his lore. i couldve totally missed smth and id love to hear it if i have.

I really enjoyed reading the journal of nxx behavioural studies! I originally read all the analyses in reverse chronological order since I was scrolling through your blog and reading them when they came up, so being able to easily read them chronologically and see how your analyses developed over time was really interesting! The way it's laid out is also really good, I loved the colour coding and the little images and memes. They provided some laughs and were a nice pick me up after some of the more serious analyses. The journal really does feel like both a formal, serious character study and also something made out of love and passion. I really appreciate you and your friends' efforts in making this, and I look forward to seeing more analyses and fics from you!
🌌
MILKYWAYYYYY!!! hello :DDD long time no talk cuz u sent an ask about my fandom culture ramble and i was so interested in it that my response is still HALFWAY WRITTEN IN MY DRAFTS KSJBF but it's nice to see you again hehe :3
im so glad you enjoyed the compilation, waaaahh!!! and also omg yea, even how my masterlist is ordered is from most recent to most in the past-est (as u can see, i used all my braincells for the compilation so now ive got NONE LEFT lmao) and ordering them chronologically was so satisfying on my end as well cuz i started out with really simple observations and then
spiralled into the abyss of Peak Overthinking, HAHA
im glad you (and a bunch others!!) liked/noticed the color coding!!! when i zoomed out on all the pages while layouting, i couldnt like, see what was discussing what. the colors helped organize things visually
and kjkJBKJS THE PICS AND MEMES YEAH, i was just having a lot of fun with that. i also still wanted to make the thing like, somehow have something new to offer even to people who have already read the analyses in the og posts. the pictures and footnote comments were my way of adding sprinkles, in sense hehe
and hHHHHHH IM RLLY GLAD that the compilation gives off that vibe cuz that vibe is tru. i rlly rlly love this stuff and these characters and this fandom. funny story: i showed my dad the compilation just awhile ago while we were having breakfast and he was amazed but the first thing he said was "are you getting paid for this?"
i said nope! both for the obvious fanworks monetization copyright boogaloo but also cuz like. i dont....need that. he even said "you should send this to the creator of the game" and i was horrified (I MENTION SO MANY NOT-CANON SHIPS IN THIS COMPILATION LMAO) and bewildered. i asked him why he thought i should do that and the convo went
my dad: because you made all this for them!
me: but i didnt make it for them. i made all this for me and the fandom. not the creators.
and like. yeah. yeah i dunno what my point was with this last bit but i guess what im tryna say is i have a lot of big love for this game as it is and an even bigger love for the fans of it.
thank you for the lovely ask, milkyway :')

out of curiosity what are your favorite futurama fanfictions...if you can share them i would love to know i need some decent ones to read
ok thank you for giving me an excuse to share. i was even gonna make a post about fanficts i like but i didn’t think anyone would actually read them but now i can. so here they are in order of my love ......under read more because it’s very long
“keep your palms flat” - i think this is the definition of frender. like this is it. i like fanfics that have their own little spin on the ship, like changing canon to your own interpretation is cool and i like to read stuff like that (i also do it incurably) but this is just what it’s like in all truth. nobody in the history of the entire futurama fandom that ive met so far gets it more than this person and i wish they wrote more futurama crap and i wish this one were longer. actually it’s not even a frender fic it’s more like a cute little character study of fry with very slight undertones about his relationship with bender but if you love the ship ur gonna suck up those undertones like  a vacuum. also every line is like it came straight from the show, like they do a better job at writing futurama than the writers themselves. it’s masterfully written. cool fic
“you're the only friend i need“ - i used to be very sad about certain stuff in my life that this story contains so i would read this over and over. i used to keep it open all the time to go look at it because the writing is very well done in my opinion and has these few certain lines that kick you in the head. at least they kicked me in the head. interesting headcanons are featured too
“Come Into My Closet“ - this one is pretty in character but it’s more funny than anything. for frender lovers
“Three Player Game” - the author probably ditched this and it’s only two chapters in (and not very well written...) but the plot is cool and it’s a good read anyway. basically bender teaches fry how to be with leela by rehearsing dates with him but wishes it was real. worth reading. i wish they would finish this
“The Miseducation of Philip J. Fry“ - this shit is insane it’s like it came from the show. a cool fic about fry involving X-mas and pills and alien abduction. honestly i didn’t gain anything emotionally from it but it’s a really good read so who cares
“Swell“ - this is both a human bender and high school au and i dont take it too seriously but it’s a cute read and worth your time. actually i just went to the author’s profile and it turns out they wrote one of my favourite invader zim fics ever HOLY CRAP #howthestarsalign
“The Fragility of Meatbags“ - this is about bender fathering fry and leela’s child in their absence because they DIED but it’s cool, a fic for the whole bender loving family
“The Human Design Flaw” - this is a cool bit, another “fry is sad and talks to bender” fic but everyone cares about things like that and it’s well done
thats all. i skipped out on emailing people at school to compile this list but it was my choice because i hate writing emails. hope theyre to your taste

ive heard that the china government is now going to make the boys of the country go through an education process to make them more "Manly". i honestly kept thinking, are they serious? that's a main issue? i read an article of the voices of a few people disagreeing with the whole idea. i mean, they can't be serious and if they are, do you think it'll stick? SOrry, I know you may not do the whole political thing but I wanted to rant about this to someone.
My day job and graduate degree are in fields closely related to & influenced by politics at global and national levels, so I spend a lot of my non-tumblr time talking and thinking about these things. ;) Maybe I should revise my blog description to say ‘fandom and politics.’
You bring up a lot of interesting questions, and for now I’ll focus on the Disney-related ones since the China studies class I took was several years ago and I’m not familiar with everything you’ve mentioned, though the overall themes are basically unchanged.
I think the bottom line is that the entertainment industry is extremely competitive, and the reality is that the Chinese market is massive. China’s economy is on track to overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest in the next decade or so. We see the consequences of this already playing out across the world, with a new economic imperialism already underway across Asia and Africa in particular.
Disney’s products aren’t limited to movies or traditional media content. They have theme parks and ‘experiences’ - including in Shanghai and Hong Kong - they even own ESPN so sports is a big deal too; and merchandise of all kinds. So their relationship with China is never just about one movie, and neither is any of the other entertainment companies’. Universal or Warner Media or anyone else isn’t going to make different choices, because it may be theoretically possible, but it will be exceedingly difficult for these media companies to succeed without access to the Chinese market. That means playing by their rules.
(I didn’t know about Black Panther not doing well there, or that promotional material featuring Black and brown characters is edited a certain way. But it doesn’t surprise me, either. Anti-Black racism is unfortunately very common in Asia - not just in China.)
Placing you full set of asks under the cut, for context. :)
P2: pro but only in a single scene by a nameless person or couple; speaking about diversity but making the China posters starring black main characters are reduced or their faces or obscured or making someone who is traditionally Tibetan white in the adaptation (The Ancient One in the MCU). Basically, Disney is all about "having their cake and eating it too". I know China's huge population means more $, but that also means doing some ridiculous rules in order to appease the govt. I know that
P3; Tibet and China have some beef (Im not sure what) but I think it's stupid to erase a character's Tibetan or Chinese lineage just because two countries have issues. I know money is important but Disney's hypocritical and greed makes them look pathetic to an extent. And, and this is a serious ?, it IS possible to make $ with very little or even without from China, right? Black Panther did poorly there but made over 1 billion dollars; also Tenet has a black hero but the film did good there
P4: Tenet made money there and they (assumingly) didn't censor him like disney. It's a humbling lesson (not that disney will listen) that they can't keep following these rather silly laws. Pandering may work at first but it always leads to trouble in the end. I will respect each and every culture different than my one but pandering is where I draw the line. That South Park ep, The China Problem, did make a good point on this issue, controversial as it was in other parts. Your thoughts?

Thank you to all who participated! There were 404 participants in this survey.
Of the 404 participants, 87.9% have read Japanese literary works by BSD authors and only 12.1% had not. Please remember that this survey was only advertised on a Bungou Stray Dogs literary blog, so these results do not reflect the BSD Fandom as a whole.
Readers read these literary works in 20 different languages. 69% of readers read the works in English, 13% in Japanese, 5% in Spanish, 2% in German and French, and the remaining 9% were reading Japanese literature in the following languages: Chinese, Czech, Finnish, Georgian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
Most people have read a novel, short story, and/or poem by the Japanese BSD authors, but not many have read the essays and plays.
Dazai Osamu is the author with the most readers. In 2nd place is Nakahara Chūya, 3rd place is Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, and 4th place is Edogawa Ranpo.
No Longer Human by Dazai Osamu is the top favorite literary work, followed by The Setting Sun by Dazai Osamu, “Hell Screen” by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, and Kokoro by Natsume Sōseki.
The top three authors people want to read next are: Edogawa Ranpo, Nakajima Atsushi, and Dazai Osamu. Right behind them are Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Yumeno Kyūsaku, Oda Sakunosuke, and Natsume Sōseki.
Take a look at the images above for more details.
If you want to read more Japanese literature or are interested in a specific author, you can check out my Online Library and the BSD Recommended Reading List. There you can find over 200 literary works by Japanese authors as well as articles and videos, all free and ready to download.
There was a comment section, so if you are interested in reading the responses I have included them under the cut:
Survey Comments:
(i know no one asked but i have no friends so-) currently reading crime and punishment and it actually feels like a punishment. but it’s so good—
<3
Although i have not read any japanese authors books, I have read the books for Edgar Allan Poe and Louisa May Alcott
As character Chuuya is my favourite, but I still haven't managed to read anything by the author! In Brazil there's a collection of Japanese short stories and most of the authors I've read are from there, though the book is a bit old. The others I looked up on the internet or bought ebooks, mostly in English. I've got to know Miyazawa Kenji before I started reading BSD due to a Japanese TV program that introduced Yoshinori-sensei and his reading of the poem! So he has a special place in my heart :)
Bless this survey
Bsd (but quite honestly, your blog in particular) really awakened my love for literature and critical analysis which has been laying dormant for a while. I used to be quite good at literary analysis when I was studying romanian literature in school back in my home country, and although the subject was, unsurprisingly, abhorred by most of my classmates, I quite liked it. I hope I can go back to that someday. Thank you for the effort you put in this literature blog.
cant wait to see the results to the survey!!! ive been curious about this too, so this is very exciting for me, especially since this anime got me back into reading
Choosing the favorite author and favorite work was too harsh (I love all of them, impossible), but I tried. Can you please tell any sources, where its possible to read any works in English? Reading in Japanese is nice, but takes too much time :( And, as always, thank you for your hard work!
Chuuya's poems ? I would die for them. I'm a big sucker for poetry and there's something, somehow, inside them, that just... leaves me spechless.
Creating a discord channel to disscus about literary heroes and their works.
For the question "What Japanese BSD author are you most interested in reading whose works you HAVE NOT read?" I also want to say that I'd love to read Ogurri Mushitarou's works. <3
Gambatte💕
Happy to participate in the survey! <3!
have a nice day! ^^
Hello! Your work is amazing. Thanks for bringing all those facts and interesting quotes on these authors. Your work is really appreciated :) Have a great day!
Hi!
Hope this helps! :)
I am a huge live for reading and am planning to one by one read all of the books from the bsd authors!!
Also, I have read most of the works from the western authors featuring in bsd (since they are more available) like Fyodor's Crime and Punishment, Agatha's And Then There Were None and many of Poe's short stories!! And I felt overwhelming happiness when I saw them in the series!! Thank you ^-^
I am planning to read more of their works.
I do feel quite bad and embarassed about not reading any of the author's works, but i will read their works some day
I don't know if it is a coincidence but after I started watching the anime the libraries of my city suddenly had books of Dazai, Chuuya and Tanizaki. What they were too expensive for me to purchase.
I don't suppose you have any recommendations on where to start reading these novels in English?
I don’t really know much about BSD but I’ve been a long-time reader of Japanese literature. It’s nice that there is more exposure & interest in these books. Thank you for your blog. I hope it would lead to an introduction to other Japanese works like the classics, poetry, performance arts like kabuki, modern literature, etc.
I have marked Dazai as my favorite, though I’m not really sure if that is true, it’s just I have only read The Setting Sun and No Longer Human, so I can’t say much of my thoughts on the other authors, though I do want to read works from more of the authors the BSD characters are based on.
I have read only one short story by Akutagawa, and so I understood why the writers of BSD weren’t favored by the people in their era, considering his short story talked about the time imperial Japan taken over Joseon (Korea) and yet he made the evil ones are the Japanese, he wasn’t afraid to address his country’s bad regime, and that’s an impressive thing to be very honest, hopefully I will increase my knowledge about the authors of BSD
I haven’t read any literature yet, but I do mean to someday (ideally in japanese, although I’m still learning the basics so it might be awhile yet)
I honestly wish I read a lot more by the japanese authors. Just from the quotes you guys post, I get a desire to go out and buy a book from one of them. I'll definitely get one by Yosano this month, and then probably other BSD authors. I wish they included Japanese authors as well in school literature, like, for an example : Fyodor and pretty much whole Guild are authors you HAVE to read in my country's schools.
I like how you asked about the language of the books! I'm looking forward to the results :)
I like that i have learned about japanese culture through this works and i would have not learned about many of them without BSD. BSD have also inspired me to read other autors, or finish books from them. I love "La Nariz" from Gogol and i think i would have not learned about that story if i hadn't known BSD.
I love Ranpo-kun!
I love reading all Japanese literature, because of the unique style and approach they have toward writing. The poetry especially is very different than traditional western style, and the short stories are often written about subjects that most westerners do not touch on. I love both, but find them enjoyable for different reasons. I just wish I could read more of their works, but it is difficult to attain them sometimes, especially the more rare authors!
Keep up the good work, you got me inspired to explore more authors that I might have never even heard of otherwise!
I LOVE RL RANPO SO MUCH. HE'S THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE. I THANK BSD EVERY DAY FOR INTRODUCING US.
I love your blog, and this is cool.
I love your post about facts of the authors because it's so satisfying know why in the anime characters have some attitudes, relationship or actions
I love your tumblr 😉
I managed to buy a book with a lot of Japanese short stories and most of them are in BSD, I haven't really read it yet. My brother actively studies Japanese and one of his materials is a collection of short stories from Akutagawa and Natsume in both English and Japanese. I hope to read it in Japanese one day. Your blog is great, thank you.
I truly enjoy your tumblr, thank you
I want to read Dazai Osamu's work but I don't where to read it, don't have money to buy the real book...
I want to read their works but finding time to read is a bit hard with my life. If you know any good free pdfs then pls tell me. Have a good day! 😊
I wish I knew Japanese because there will always be something lost within translation.
I would like to read all works, but I'm too lazy
I'd like to translate Dogra Magra into English but I'd need a proofreader as my English isn't that good...do you know anyone who'd be willing to help?
I'm currently a graduate student so most of my reading is dictated by my classes, but BSD has definitely created in me a curiosity to read Japanese literature!
I'm not a fervent bibliophile like yourself but I do really like your quote choices, it's what got me really interested in those authors I have not read.  I don't follow many tumblers but yours I particularly enjoy a lot,  and it's also great we both like the bsd anime /manga! Keep up the good work I always look forward to your posts.
I’ll just take this opportunity to thank you for all your hard work in the fandom. One of the things I love the most about bsd is seeing how the authors and their works influence their manga counterparts. I would’ve never known so much about them if it wasn’t for your blog. Thank you so much!!
I’m in the middle of reading No Longer Human
I’m most familiar with British and American authors, but I love that BSD showed me so many more Japanese and Russian authors that I didn’t know existed (that’s more because of my high school but we don’t need to talk about that)
Is it weird that I actually find Kajii's stories... delightful? So much so that I want more from his character! Anyways, thanks for sharing your love for literature!!
keep up the good work, your blog is awesome!
Keep up the good work! <3
Looking forward to the results. Thank you for your hard work!
Mishima Yukio
miyazawa kenji is my favourite jp author but in terms of BSD charas, chuuya has my favourite design.
Mori-san writes really well
Most of the BSD authors I read were the American  authors and it was interesting to compare and contrast eastern to western writing
My favorite author is Dazai, but Akutagawa also have some literary works that deserves to be readed.
Nakajima atsushi works bring me a lot of happiness somehow
Reading their literary works make me understand BSD's characters better. So try reading ones if you haven't read them yet. :)
Since starting to become a fan of BSD, I've also started up a collection of books by the IRL authors on my bookshelf; I've just not got around to reading some of them yet, and others on the list are hard to find or expensive when they are available (Atsushi's Light, Wind, and Rain and Ayatsuji's Another especially). I also like reading about the IRL authors and seeing quotes, so I've seen bits and pieces about more authors than I felt was right to say I've read an entire work from.
Stan best boy Chuuya 🥺
Thank you
Thank you for all the traductions and your hard work. It is hard to know or obtain information about japanese writers in my country, so I really appreciate all of your work and traductions.
Greetings from Mexico ୧(^ 〰 ^)୨
Thank you for all your hard work, thanks to you I've developed an interest to Japanese literature, and seeing your posts each day put a smile on my face, so thank you sempai, lots of love from a French fan ! ^-^
thank you for conducting this survey and for all of your work providing quotes, facts etc. about the authors on your tumblr as well!
Thank you for making this survey, I was actually interested ti see how many people actually read.
Thank you for making this survey!
thank you for providing us with easy to access works from these authors 💕
Thank you for your hard work !
Thank you for your work on bsd bibliophile. I wouldn't have discovered all of those books without your blog
Thank you very much for the work you do. I study japanese literature at my university, but I couldn't find many works you post about, because they aren't translated in italian, unfortunately.
Thanks for all the effort and time you put into your blog! I always enjoy seeing your posts on my dashboard.
Thanks for all your quotes and facts!! I love your tumblr page !!
Thanks for the survey! Have a pleasant day :)
The works of BSD authors I have read so far are varied. But rather than critique them, I actually enjoy reading them especially No Longer Human because I felt like I can related to Osamu Dazai to some degree.
This survey is really interesting! I wonder if the writers are as popular as the characters!
I want to have some free time quickly so I can read some more BSD authors! My favorite japanese authors though are Banana Yoshimoto and Haruki Murakami. I've read works of Kensaburo Oé, Yukio Mishima and a little bit of Yasunari Kawata too and I wish they could appear on BSD haha it would be really cool!
PD: I love OP blog, they are one of the most original and cool fandom blogs I've seen. I think Asagiri would love it :D
This survey was nice to do ^.^
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find books from Asia in my country (translated or not). I would really like to be able to read more of them.
You may have missed Yokomizo Seishi? Not exactly a character that appears, but at least he’s part of the perfect murder arc. I’ve only read the Inugami Clan but loved it a lot!
I started exploring Japanese lit because of a metal band I like called 人間椅子, whose entire discography is an homage to Japanese horror/mystery lit, but especially Edogawa Ranpo’s works. To be honest, I’ve been avoiding reading in English because I wanted to read in the original and (until recently) hadn’t had the proficiency to do that comfortably. Finally catching up though! Plus, I’ve been more appreciative of quality translation work, so more willing to read these things in English too.
You're one of my most favourite blogs online ever and I'm so happy you're doing this! Please share the data with us once you're finished. Thank you for your efforts!
your blog is a blessing ✨ thank you so much for bringing fans closer to the bsd authors themselves through presenting their works.
your blog is hella rad thank you for running it :’)

👶,⭐,💘, and💻. Love you!!
thank you for ask anon! writer ask game is here if yall wanna send in something. still taking asks for these btw
👶- advice for new writers =
yall this is hella fucking generic but PRACTISE. theres a reason almost literally every writer on tumblr gives the advise of “practise practise practise” and that reason is it works. practise doesnt mean ‘oh just write bc youll automatically get better over time’ it means ‘write bc if you dont, you wont figure out what you need to improve.’ did yall know that i literally had no sentence variation in the past? i started every sentence with [character name] or [character pronoun] and i didnt realise until i was 15/16 and i only realised bc i started writing a lot.
i think there’s a fear of failure with new writers. there’s this lingering doubt of  “what if its not good?” and boy howdy i will answer that question right fucking now. it wont be good. when i compare my current work to my earlier work, my earlier work sucked fucking shit. i spelled soldier with a fucking ‘j’ and i had no idea what the hell a point of view was. and thats okay. whoever tells you that youre going to perfect writing is a fucking liar. there is no perfecting writing. 20 years from now, imma look at the writing from today and im gonna think it sucks shit. writing is a process. its a craft. you get better and better over time and the way you get better is by experimenting w different styles, different genres, different ways of writing.
and the only way you can experiment and improve is through practise. in video games, especially rpgs (which are my favourite kind of video games), you struggle in the early game. youre at a low level, you dont have good equipment, you have a hard time moving to the next area. but the only way you progress is by grinding, gaining levels, and getting stronger. same w writing. if youre a level 1 writer, just starting out, no idea what to do, just experiment. fuck around a bit. write crackships, write rarepairs, write niche self-indulgent reader/character fics. at the end of the day, you should write for yourself. its good and cool if other people like your stuff and validate all your hard work, but at the end of the day, the one who should enjoy your writing the most is yourself.
you WILL mess up and you WILL struggle, but thats the only way you can improve. i struggle with pacing the most. still do. but others might have pacing down pat and struggle instead with word choice or pov or something else. cant figure out where you need to improve if you dont write, so just practise and worry about all the fine print later
⭐️- how do you get your inspiration? =
this is definitely not universal, but i just sit on my bed, close my eyes, and meditate. cycle through all my emotions and thoughts and filter them out. then i just toss everything out the damn window. like. id just meditate for a while, focus on breathing, on experiencing the present, picture a field and a tree and myself and breathe. thoughts fly by and i let them happen but dont focus on it.
meditating gives me some semblance of emotional control bc i normally have none, and it gives me kind of this space. this safe space that only exists for me and me alone. so i use that space to let the world drift away. just me and my thoughts and sometimes, those thoughts end up being good writing ideas. but i usually meditate for a set amount of time. like 15 minutes or 30 minutes so i dont write until i finish meditating.
then when i get out of my headspace, i open up my laptop and see what i remember. thinking too hard about something causes it to muddy up. same with art. in digital art, artists flip the canvas to refresh their eyes, see if there’s anything weird or wonky about the illustration that they normally dont see bc theyve gotten used to it. flipping the canvas is like giving our eyes a jumpstart and lets us see what we could do better. in traditional art, its turning the canvas this way and that or repositioning yourself. meditating is like that. a break. a cleanse. a kind of pause where you dont think about anything and just try to process what you already have. you relax and kind of let yourself float down a river of thoughts and sometimes, a fish would jump out of that river and youd go “hey, thats a good idea. i should try that” so when you get out of the river, youre refreshed and ready to go.
same principle with showers. more ideas come to you in the shower when you dont have anything to write with bc youre not thinking about it. youre not focusing on finding inspiration or motivation so ideas naturally flow through you. you know that feeling when you want to do x then someone comes along and says “hey you should do x” and suddenly all motivation to do x leaves? same w your brain. focus too much on “i should be writing” or “i want inspiration” and its never gonna come. just let things happen. at least, thats how i do it. some people might get inspiration by reading or watching tv. everyones different so if thats not what works out for you, dont feel pressured to try my method
💘- what’s your favorite AU? Least favorite? =
magic au. specifically fantasy au set in like a pre-modern era. shows like avatar where theres all this magic and fantastical beasts and so on and so forth. semi-modern like six of crows and nevernight are great too. i want that magic to be woven into people’s lives. harry potter is okay but there’s like this separation between magic and muggle. there’s this feeling of “magic” but like as a tool. like a spoon or a gun or a shovel. i want magic au’s that are INTEGRATED with the world its set in.
like in atla, earth kingdom people have trains they move with bending while fire nation people have machines powered by heat and steam. both correspond to their bending and makes sense for the world they live in. but if your plot is like harry potter and its less worldbuilding and more action, then there’s this book series called seasons rising (read it. so good) where there’s a bunch of spells but the spells have character. the people using the spells GIVE it character and it feels much more intimate. pokemon does the whole fantasy mixed w reality better. give two trainers the exact same pokemon and by the time that pokemon reaches lvl 50, its gonna have a different moveset, different fight style, etc bc it was shaped by the world and people around it. i like harry potter but tbh it could have been so much better
for the least favourite au, it’s A/B/O i dont like the whole “omegas are only good for breeding hurr durr” and “alphas are violent and aggressive and cant control themselves around omegas” thing and it squicks me out. major squick. i read the original harry potter squick (THAT one. yeah. you know the one) and i still hate a/b/o more. i get why people like it, and there are one or two fics set in a/b/o au that i enjoy reading, but as a whole, i severely dislike a/b/o fics.
the themes are squick, the character dynamics get so messed up, and shipping dynamics (bc a/b/o fics usually have shipping) just get so blown out of proportion. there are so many a/b/o fics that turn ooc or the character interpretations radically change or something else. no hate against a/b/o fans bc yall are amazing for writing/drawing yalls au. there are things that you can only do in this setting and exploring those things can be incredibly fun for people, but for me personally, its not an au i like to visit.
💻- three works of yours that are must reads =
i. dont know what fandom youre in anon or your genre preferences. so ill just rec you one fic for a different fandom each with kind of different genres. ts masterlist is on my side @hufflepuff-deceit and regular fanfic masterlist is on my writing blog @crownonymous
(BNHA) Viper. its my first serious attempt at fanfic in YEARS and its my baby. currently has 7 chapters, i havent updated it in a while bc im hyperfocused on ts rn, but i love it to bits. its just all of my fav bnha fics crammed into one fic. quirkless kind of villain izuku with stain as a mentor as they work together to bring light to the injustices of hero society and where bakugos bullying has visible and long-lasting repercussions? sign me the fuck up. you can read it on ao3 HERE bc its not on tumblr. kind of fast-paced, has a lot more action scenes than anything else ive written. heavy plot-wise but has a lot of humour and comedy to break things up
(Kimetsu no Yaiba) I Pray To God He Hears You. not related to my other kny fic oleander which is a multichap retelling au. iptghhy is a standalone one-shot and kind of a character study on one giyuu tomioka. i love him so much. giyuu is my baby and i adore him. so of course i wrote a sad fic focusing on him. well technically, the fic focuses on giyuu AND his relationships.  SPOILERS for chapters 130 and 131 of the manga. focuses mostly on giyuu and sabito, but there’s a fair bit of giyuu and tanjiro and urokodaki.  you can read it HERE bc this is also not on tumblr. also deals with heavy things but more emotion-wise since it doesnt have that much of a plot. loss. grief. moving on. survivors guilt. that kind of stuff.  very sad. hurt but with comfort, especially at the end.
(Sanders Sides) Logan’s Birthday Fic: Logicality. just what the title says. i wrote 5 different fics and published them all on logans bday but the logicality one received the most feedback and honestly? the cutest of the bunch. its gonna be crossposted onto ao3 but for now, you can read it HERE on my ts sideblog. theres no plot since its literally just domestic and relationship fluff. and puns. patton is in the fic, theres gonna be puns. nothing but good things and warm feelings bc logan deserves it.

thank you so much for such interesting asks anon! i enjoyed answering these. have a lovely day!

using sign language in facfiction
so i’ve been reading ~*fanfiction*~ again and i’ve noticed that with the popularity of d/Deaf and hard of hearing characters and headcanons, there’s also a LOT of mistakes being made. whether its from misinformation, lack of research, or simple oversight, I think it’s important to keep some things in mind.
ive got a simple list type thing below for things to consider when using sign language in fanfiction
**Big Honkin’ Disclaimer!!!*** I am not d/Deaf of hard of hearing! I’m an outsider of the community, but I’ve been taking courses in ASL and Deaf Studies for four years now, and I want to spread what I know to other people who might be interested!! Also, i’m keeping it under the cut so updates can be seen cause i’m SO cure i missed a lot!!
1.) ASL is not universal
ASL stands for American Sign Language and is primarily used by Americans, Canadians (except Quebec). Some other countries have adopted it, including many African countries, and some costal Asian countries, but it remains large exclusive to America and Canada.
In fandom, you’re likely to come across Japanese Sign Language for Anime, British Sign Language for BBC shows, French Sign Language for some cartoons, etc. etc. Basically, what I’m saying is that if your thing takes place anywhere besides America, look up what kind of sign language they use, and I would recommend even looking up some basic signs to get yourself acquainted with it.
Note: I can’t say for certain because I absolutely do not know if it’s the case with other sign languages, but at least in American Sign Language, sentence structure is very different from it’s spoken language. In English, we might say “I went over to Clarissa’s house yesterday”, but in ASL, it would translate more directly to “Yesterday Clarissa’s house I go.” Whether or not you choose to write in this word order is up to you. Another option might be to simply sum up what they said like:
Jane asked Sarah, “What did you do yesterday?”  Sarah responded that she went to Clarissa’s house.
I, personally, find this the least jarring way to read Deaf characters in print, but that’s just me. It also could avoid a lot of missteps if you’re not familiar enough with the language, especially foreign sign languages!
2.) There are other ways to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing people.
I’ve deadass read fics where character’s S/Os will learn sign language in like. A week. And yeah some basic signs could be picked up in that time, but likely not. Instead of jumping right to “And then his husband learn sign language for him!”, maybe they started somewhere else.
Writing/texting back and forth is a SUPER COMMON AND VERY CONVENIENT way of communicating with a deaf person if you don’t like sign language. I’ve yet to stumble upon a fic where someone is writing cute notes to their S/O like c’MON THAT’S LOST POTENTIAL!!
Gestures go a long way! A lot of signs were born from common gestures, like the sign for “telephone” or “drink”. It’s entirely possible to communicate gesturally to someone without knowing a lick of sign language.
There’s... kind of a lot to say in the way of interpreters so I uuuuh. Okay, as far as fanfic is concerned, the interpreter (Note: the word is “interpreter”, not “translator”) is likely a friend or child because I don’t know who’s writing in RID certified interpreters into their slashfic. But it’s very important that the character is talking to the deaf character and not the interpreter. If that character doesn’t know that, let them learn! It’s fun to read about people knowing things!
Lip-reading and speech-reading is very very difficult and often super inaccurate!!! Especially if the character didn’t grow up deaf or hard of hearing, it’s very difficult to have a conversation with a deaf person who is lipreading. Try it for yourself, it’s SUPER difficult. Hard of hearing characters might have an easier time since residual hearing plays a big part in it but it really rustles my jimmies when deaf/hoh characters are like “haha just talk to me normally, i can read lips :)” when in reality its more like “okay so i can kinda read lips cut can you sit on the other side of me cause there’s more like and also speak slower but don’t over annunciate and also please speak up and can you talk a bit more with your hands so i can get a sense of what you’re talking about and wait im sorry what’s the context again?” followed by many many :can you repeat that?” “what was that again???” JUST BELIEVE ME it’s difficult.
Also remember that a lot of deaf people can’t speak. Also remember that some deaf people can. Also remember that some deaf people don’t “sound” deaf. That’s a whole other can of worms.
3.) Not all sign language users are d/Deaf.
In an attempt to keep this sign language centric, I want to point out that some other people who use ASL actually might have perfectly function hearing and even speaking mouthparts! Some of these people include autistic people, especially children, people who are mute, people with speech processing disorders, and even people with audio processing disorders. And that’s only the groups of people I can come up with off the top of my head. There are all kinds of people use use sign language, gesture language, etc. in their daily lives.
4.) Not all d/Deaf people use sign language.
A sad reality is that many many institutions don’t favor the deaf. There are adults who were born deaf and never learned sign language because they weren’t taught it in schools or because they were taught ~*oralism*~ which was heavily pioneered by Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone and husband to a deaf woman. Not entirely relevant, but interesting. Oralism is the practice of forcing speech and lip-reading onto deaf people, where classes were spent teaching deaf people to speak rather than to sign. In some oralist schools, sign language is even flat-out banned.
A YouTuber that I really love, Jessica Kellgren-Fozard, talks about how her school would provide a BSL interpreter, but not BSL lessons while she was going deaf. And that is a sad reality. In some American school systems, deaf children simply sit through class and kind of. Hope that they get whats going on because their school won’t teach them sign language. And, just as sadly, a V A S T majority of hearing parents to deaf children simply won’t learn sign for their kids and instead enforce oralist ideals on them at home.
5.) *blink-182 voice* All the small things
-pls stop saying you “speak” sign language. you use sign language. I know it sounds a little weird but trust me, speaking sign language sounds even more physically impossible
-hearing aids are not a cure all. Someone isn’t just suddenly hearing because they have hearing aids
-same with cochlear implants but i aint never seen that one in a fanfic. look into it tho it’s a rly interesting debate
I’m gonna be updating this as people have any questions, but i think this is some pretty basic stuff to get started with!

dear yuletide author (2018)
hello and welcome to my letter!
i am so happy to have you reading this letter and going to be writing a fic for me! why? because you dear writer are an amazing and wonderful person, deserving of all the kudos in the world!
please remember as you look at these prompts, that if something in my likes inspires you more than any of my specific prompts, totally feel free and run with that, and know that i will enjoy any fic that is gifted to me!!
ao3/lj handle: plinys
now lets get down to business:
the fandoms i’ve requested this year are: Babe - Sugarland ft. Taylor Swift (Music Video) , Dramarama - Monsta X (Music Video) , The Gifted (TV 2017) ,  Partners (TV 2012) , A Simple Favor (2018), and Superman Returns (2006)
but before that, my likes/kinks/dislikes/triggers:
likes: alternate universes, characters that are in character, lady-centric fics, angst, fandom cliches, dysfunctional relationships, friendships, friends/enemies to lovers, soul mates, road trips,  hanukkah fics, jewish characters, bisexual characters, poly relationships, character studies, origin stories, ambiguous endings, meta fic, slow build, fics that incorporate social media, crack treated seriously, drunk confessions, miscommunication,
kinks: threesomes, competence kink, phone sex, masturbation, crying during sex, hate sex, shower sex, praise kink, guys going down on girls, rough sex, first time, spanking, daddy kink, sex in front of mirrors, voyeurism, make up sex
dislikes: pwp, main character death (unless it really makes sense/happens in canon), character bashing, non-con, mpreg, a/b/o, 1st person, 2nd person
my triggers (please no matter what do not include these): school shootings, cancer, terminal illness, riots, child abuse.
and now to the fun stuff -
Babe - Sugarland ft. Taylor Swift (Music Video)
characters: Cheating Husband (Babe), Mistress (Babe), Wife (Babe)
where to watch: the music video is up on youtube
prompts:
right after watching this video, my first thought was that i was disappointed that the cheating husband didn’t die in the end. like he should have died they set it all up for him to die. so do me a favor and write a fic where he gets exactly what he deserved
bonus points if we get something where the ladies team up to do him in, maybe it’s all a big long con, maybe they were actually working together to kill him for the insurance money or something. (make them gay if you want, or make them bonded as friends because the same man screwed them over either way im chill)
alternatively - if someone wants to write smut between the cheating husband and the mistress that’s totally fine by me because imagining brandon routh and taylor swift together is something that i could get behind so uh feel free
honestly if you can make anything come out of this music video it would make me very happy because its one of my favorites and literally any fic about it will be good
Dramarama - Monsta X (Music Video)
characters: Chae Hyungwon (Dramarama MV)
where to watch: the music video is here on youtube
prompts:
so a good place to start would probably be with some sort of explanation for what is going on in the music video and there is a lot of theories but honestly ive got like only 80% of a clue after reading them all so good luck. basically if you don’t know anything about who the boys are (i don’t even go here technically, my roommate just showed me the video a while back and when  saw it in the tag set i got super interested in requesting fic about it)
i nominated hyungwon, he’s the one in the video who is in the suit and sort of giving out all of the watches that enable the other to travel through time. im mainly looking for backstory on his character, what is his role in all of this? what is his motivation? why did he choose this set of people to give the watches too
also related just expanding on the concept of time travel presented in the video. in this case you don’t have to focus on hyungwon, you can focus on the other sort of “men in black” showed or any of the other duo’s presented
honestly whatever you could pull out of this video would be really interesting to me! if something inspires you after watching the video consider total freedom when it comes to this prompt
The Gifted (TV 2017)
characters: Lorna Dane (The Gifted (TV 2017)), Marcos Diaz (The Gifted (TV 2017))
where to watch: all of season one is on hulu, and it’s current airing weekly
prompts:
so i realize that by time reveals are the show will have finished season two so who knows how we will all feel about them by then and what will have happened but right now in canon i am very much emotionally compromised by everything going on with lorna/marcos and so i am asking for 100% shippy prompts for them
there was a lot of missing moments in season one that could be expanded on. when they were together in the underground. fluffy little things with them having discussions about their baby, soft bed sharing stuff, making promises to protect each other, just anything soft with them expecting the baby is right up my alley
and then of course now were in season two and things arent so easy, depending on how things go in canon i would love some sort of fic of them getting back together and getting to be a big happy family. if that means marcos joining the inner circle or lorna leaving, ether way works for me
at nycc sean (who plays marcos) said that “there isn’t a man who loves his daughter more, and he hasn’t even met her” obviously now he has met her. but i would love just some character study of marcos inner turmoil over all of this
seriously though anything lorna/marcos will make me happy
Partners (TV 2012)
characters: Louis McManus, Wyatt Plank
where to watch: i’ve only found it on less than legal streaming sites
prompts:
if you havent seen this, which you probably have not, it is a very quick watch, it’s like ten episodes of a sitcom, very easy to consume quickly. and im 90% certain that someone has made a cut of just the louis/wyatt scenes on youtube. it got cancelled before its first season ever finished.
louis/wyatt are an established relationship on the show, very cute and domestic, and just silly sitcom vibes. this is sort of my easy request, because im not really looking for anything dramatic with this one. do you like writing curtain fic? easy fluff? whatever is light and easy and suits your fancy
if youre in a smutty mood you could totally work with this one because i mean established relationship and there was definitely a few fade to black scenes in the sitcom so feel free
before the series ended there was like a discussion of them making their relationship even more serious, obviously that was sort of a cliffhanger to end the series on. but if you would like to expand on that and write where you think their lives would have gone next i would love to read that!
A Simple Favor (2018)
characters: Emily Nelson (A Simple Favor (2018)),  Stephanie Smothers (A Simple Favor (2018))
where to watch: at a theater near you!
prompts:
okay so i know their relationship dynamic was a little fucked up (or well, a lot) but that is exactly what is so perfect about them. i want dysfunctional relationships, power imbalances, codependency, all the bad wrong dirty tropes that you can fit in with these two
i would LOVE some smut with them. you see my kinks list back up there at the top, use some of those. the more sinful the better, because how could you watch this movie and not think about these two ladies fucking in that fancy house? drinks turns into emily teaching stephanie how to go down on another woman like? these are just things that i greatly need in my life
i am very much interested in reading alternate endings where stephanie took emily up on her offer and ran away with her. where would they go? how do they start over? how do they fall for each other? tell that story (and of course bonus points if its smutty)
or maybe ones where things still go on the canon route but stephanie still cannot stop thinking about emily, and the inevitably of two people always meant to be drawn back together even if its against all logical reasoning
if youre in an au mix mood, these two would be perfect for some sort of slightly fucked up soulmate au. i would love to see something like that
Superman Returns (2006)
characters:  Clark Kent (Superman Returns (2006)), Lois Lane (Superman Returns (2006))
where to watch: i rented it off amazon? not sure if there’s anywhere legally to see it for free
prompts:
so at the end of the movie lois and clark arent actually together and we never got another movie so i find myself desperately in need of fic in which they do get back together, properly this time, and obviously with some revealing of identities and all that other important stuff
also theyve got a kid together and i am literally always weak for kidfics so i would love something to do with that. clark realizing that he has a son but that he can’t come out as clark and reveal that he’s aware of this and the dilemma that comes from that
or honestly just cute domestic family stuff, feel free to skip right past the getting together and give some nice super family fluff. i just want everyone to be happy
ANYWAYS I HOPE SOME OF THOSE PROMPTS SUIT YOUR FANCY! no matter what i know i will love whatever you write, thank you!

State of the Webcomic
Im not sure what I wanted this to be when I started writing it. I know that as of late, Homestuck, in terms of its fanbase and its surrounding politics, has been pretty bleak. And I know that it feels like there arent alot of us left that care anymore. So I guess this is going to be something of a chronicle of the comic, and its involvement in my own experience. If youre just here for classpecting memes, feel free to totally disregard this. Otherwise… strap the fuck in I guess? Theres a nonzero amount of words about to come at you. For this 4/13, this is my account of Homestuck.
On April 13th, 2009, some guy with a shitty url published the first page of an indie webcomic. As I have come to understand, this fact would eventually become something of a ‘big deal’. At the time, however, it was not. I wouldnt be aware of its existence for quite some time.
Some years passed, and people started learning that this weird thing existed. The webcomic had survived through its fledgeling stages, and had managed to gain enough momentum and a fanbase large enough to keep above the surface and on peoples radar. At this stage, the only thing I knew about the webcomic was a single word, whispered in hushed tones: “Homestuck.” A few more years passed and the fandom began to grow steadily in proportion to a roster of increasingly convoluted characters, as well as the hair-brained complexity of the comics plot.
And then, Cascade.
I heard rumor of a webcomic that went off so huge that it fucking broke Newgrounds. Suddenly the fandom was omnipresent, and potentially out of control. From what ive picked up, it was a pretty rad time to be a nerd. “Somewhere, a soused uncle deliberately shatters china on the floor. Muddy livestock is decorated, and then lost track of. The question ‘Who's mule is this?’ at times can be heard over the din. This is now your reality.”
But, as much as I was starting to learn exactly what Homestuck was, I was hearing equally as much in terms of negativity about its fandom. Of their overwhelming presence during conventions, their reputation for immaturity, the torrents of unsealed gray face paint flooding the lobbies of unsuspecting hotels. So, I stayed away. This was like, late middle school for me, and there was no way in hell I was going to risk putting my image-obsessed ass on the line for a bunch of rainbow blooded zodiac alien shitlords and their apocalyptic tendencies. So, I stayed away.
It really was the first time something pop culture had ever gotten this big. Openbound hit, and it got bigger? Somehow? More trolls? Jesus christ. The fandom kept growing at an exponential rate, faster than people could process it, and so much so that nobody else knew how to handle it.
And then it… stopped.
The Gigapause, I think it was called. At the height of their power, the fandom was left with nothing, no new content to grab hold of, no new development to fuel their fan works, no anything. The fandom starts to lose speed. A spot of hope happens, during act 6 and is subsequently dashed against the rocks below as the Omegapause kicks in. I wasnt paying attention. I was busy, there was work to be done trying to get into college.
And just as suddenly as it had come, it was gone. The webcomic concluded in a way that implied that not only the readers, but the fictional characters themselves were freed from the scope and size of their own work. Anyone still reading watched Collide, in what I can only imagine to be 20 minutes of pure catharsis. The fandom got hit with Act 7, and that was it.
This whole time, that entire span of that seven years, nobody had ever ‘told me about Homestuck.’  Until, about a year after it ended, a friend of mine told me that the way I talk reminded them of a character called Karkat (after what Im assuming was a fairly aggressive bitch fest about something or other). Upon my asking what in the fuck kind of name Karkat is, they nostalgically smiled, and asked me if I had ever read a certain webcomic.
We went back to my dorm and they pulled it up on my computer. We read for a couple hours. I didnt think too much of it, but it was amusing enough. I put it away, and forgot about it until one lazy day like month later. And then I think it was Rose dropping a bathtub in Johns hallway that sealed the deal. I dont think I have to tell anyone following a fucking classpect blog about how addicting reading Homestuck is. I got really into the classpect system, as you can see. Im damn near constantly nerding out about videogame-esque class systems and personality studies, and I thought Homestuck’s god tier system was so fucking creative and interesting. And the music, holy shit. A flash webcomic? With LEITMOTIFS?!?
I eventually figured out that thinking Homestuck is cool in 2018 was… lonely. The people that still were fans of the comic enjoyed it in hushed tones, and in shame. It was sad, in ways. A part of me wished that I had gotten to experience it at its peak. I am not one such member of this fandom that has existed when the work was in its primordial stages, and I do not for one second claim to have been at the apex of the movement.
So what does this shitty history lesson good for anyway, right? What does it all mean? It has been nine years to the day, this 4/13, and Hiveswap is the only thing from keeping what was once considered a monumental aspect of pop culture from fading into complete obscurity. I am hopeful of the future of Homestuck, but I cannot help but also feel that one day, in the near future, it will be lost to time. And so, here we are today. I walk amongst the bones of the sun-bleached empire that used to be Homestuck. Not many people live here anymore. One day, it might be empty. One day, it might be that nobody remembers it at all.
But not as long as you are here, reading horseshit like this rant. Not as long as someone is drawing shitty fan art of the Mayor, not as long as someone is shamelessly jamming out on the bus to Sburban Jungle, and not as long as someone out there who cant think of the word ‘Pisces’ without instinctively associating it with the color fuschia. Humanitys drive to build things, to create, is rooted in an effort to outlast their own lifespan. And the same is true for this thing that we have all come to love (hate?), and for all of the thousands of people that have found some connection with each other over a common bond. I know that this whole rant has had some serious cringe potential, but know this, you bunch of nerds: As long as you are out there, reading, enjoying, then the fandom is still alive and well. And better yet? You arent alone.
Happy 4/13, kids.
“I keep having these dreams. Great empty cities, silent roads stretching for miles. The Earth from space, all dark. Not a single light to guide me home. But if someone really came from another world, what would the Earth look like to them? A wilderness? A wasteland? I don't think so. Even after thousands of years they’d see a world shaped by our hand in every aspect of its being. They'd see the cities and the roads; the bridges, the harbors. And they would say: Here lived a race of giants.”

Elder Scrolls DC - A Reluctant Dragonborn - Chapter 4: An Audience with Jarl Balgruuf
Elder Scrolls DC - A Reluctant Dragonborn - Chapter 4: An Audience with Jarl Balgruuf by C_R_Scott Chapters: 4/? Fandom: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Red Robin (Comics), DCU (Comics) Rating: Mature Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Characters: Tim Drake, Lucien Flavius Additional Tags: Crossover, Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, Skyrim/DCU crossover, Reluctant Dovahkiin | Dragonborn, Not Beta Read
Previous Chapter | Masterlist | Next Chapter
Summary: Tim makes his way to the city of Whiterun and has his first audience with its ruler, Jarl Balgruuf.
(NOTE: I'm in the process of reblogging the initial chapters of this story because, for some reason, Tumblr won't let me edit the earlier versions that I created using the Tumblr app on my phone. I'm also in the process of creating a masterlist for this series)
-------------------------
Tim couldn't remember the last time he'd had to walk so much in one day. It turned out the city of Whiterun was several miles away from Riverwood, so the entire journey took nearly the entire day. He'd started out about an hour or so after sunrise, and he didn't find himself passing through Whiterun's gates until it was so late in the afternoon the sun was flirting with the horizon.
Tumblr media
He probably would've been there a lot sooner if he'd chosen to jog part of the distance and take his journey off the cobblestone path and through the wilderness in a more straight line fashion, especially when he was finally able to see the city in the distance. However, the pain from his back was still bothering him. It was hard enough just tolerating the jostling of the backpack full of hiking gear and weapons (a new quarterstaff along with his bow, arrows, and a couple of daggers from Helgen) Gerdur helped him get before he left Riverwood. The idea of indulging in any kind of parkour over the rocky terrain to cut down on his travel time in his current state was ludicrous. Still, despite the pain, Tim couldn't help but indulge in a climb up to a small ledge only slightly off the beaten path that gave him his first real view of the city he was traveling to.
Tumblr media
Whiterun was the model of a stereotypical small medieval city. It was nestled on a flat plain that was dotted with various farms full of crops and livestock. In the city proper, a large wall surrounded a collection of rustic wooden rooftops, above which towered a massive keep. Tim had to shake his head. When he was a younger, far geekier kid, this was the kind of setting he always imagined when he used to play Wizards and Warlocks with his old friend Ives back in middle school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he entered the keep known as Dragonsreach, Tim had to pause to take in the sight. It was just like something out of a fantasy novel. The throne room was right there up a small flight of stairs past the main doors. A large firepit blazed right in front of the throne where who he assumed was the Jarl sat, seemingly tied up in a heated conversation with another person.
Tumblr media
"If the news from Helgen is true... Well there's no telling what it means," a balding man in expensive looking clothing said to the Jarl with a fair amount of concern. "I only counsel caution. We cannot afford to act rashly in times like these."
When Jarl Balgruuf responded it caused Tim to pause. His voice spoke with authority and carried quite well in the vast room. "What would you have me do, then? Nothing?"
Tumblr media
For a moment, Tim wondered if this really was the best way to approach the Jarl. He hadn't been stopped by any of the guards upon entering the town or the castle. A part of him wondered idly at the lack of security surrounding this apparent ruler.
Suddenly, the sound of a sword being immediately unsheathed as footsteps quickly approached him made him reverse that thought immediately. Tim kept his eyes on the gleaming blade held by a gray skinned, armored woman with sharp narrow features, red eyes, and pointed ears.
Tumblr media
"What's the meaning of this interruption," the woman demanded sternly. "Jarl Balgruuf is not receiving visitors."
Tim took a breath to compose himself. Was this an "elf" of some sort? Then he answered the Jarl's guard. "I have news from Helgen about the dragon attack," he said. "I was also sent with a message from Gerdur to Jarl Balgruff. Riverwood is in danger."
The woman refused to lower her blade or or defensive stance. But her eyes widened in surprise. "You know about Helgen?" She glanced between Tim and the Jarl before finally relaxing her stance and sheathed her blade. "The Jarl will want to speak to you personally. Approach."
Marginally, Tim relaxed as well now. With a respectful nod to the guard, climbed the last few stairs up to the Jarl's throne. He glanced at the dragon skull mounted over the throne before letting his eyes fall on the man beneath it. Jarl Balgruuf was a blond regal man, dressed in furs and fine clothing. Upon his head he wore a gold crown with several gems inlaid upon it. The way he sat upon the throne, it reminded Tim of a male lion lounging on the savannah, completely secure in his superiority. With a sigh, Tim bowed in what he hoped was a respectful gesture to the man before him.
"So," Jarl Balgruuf started. "You were at Helgen? You saw this dragon with your own eyes?"
Tim nodded. "Yes. The dragon destroyed Helgen." He was careful to leave out the reason why he was in Helgen in the first place. Gerdur had told him the Jarl had not chosen a side in this country's civil war, but he wasn't going to take any chances. "Last I saw, the beast flew off toward the mountains in this direction."
Tumblr media
"By Ysmir, Irileth was right!" Balgruuf exclaimed. Then he turned to the man on his right. "What do you say now, Proventus? Shall we continue to trust in the strength of our walls? Against a dragon?"
Before the man Tim now knew as Proventus could respond, the Jarl's guard cut in. "My lord, we should send troops to Riverwood at once. It's in the most immediate danger, if that dragon is lurking in the mountains..."
Proventus then interrupted her, earning a sharp glare from the elf. "The Jarl of Falkreath will view that as a provocation! He'll assume we're prepping to join Ulfric's side and attack him."
Tumblr media
Tim winced as Balgruff bellowed. "Enough!" The word echoed off the walls. First, he fixed a glare on Proventus. "I'll not stand idly by while a dragon burns my hold and slaughters my people!" Then he turned to his guard. "Irileth, send a detachment to Riverwood at once."
Irileth, the grey-skinned elf nodded. "Yes, my Jarl," she said crisply before turning to leave the throne room. Soon after, Proventus left as well, muttering something about other duties as he decended down the stairs. Then Tim was left alone with the Jarl, who studied him for a long moment before speaking. "Well done," Balgruuf praised. "You sought me out, on your own initiative. You've done Whiterun a service, and I won't forget it. May I know your name?"
Tim inclined his head in a slight bow once more. "It's Timothy, sir, and thank you, Jarl Balgruuf. I'm sure Gerdur and Riverwood will feel a lot safer once your guards arrive. But I should go now. I've taken up enough of your time." he said politely. As Tim started to turn to descend the stairs himself, starting to wonder on his next steps on how to get back home, the Jarl spoke up once more, his tone thoughtful.
"There is another thing you could do for me."
Tim paused, eyeing the Jarl suspiciously as the man rose from his throne.
"Come, let's go find Farengar, my court wizard. He's been looking into a matter related to these dragons and... rumors of dragons."
As Balgruuf led the way to a side room next to the throne room, Tim felt his heart drop into the pit of his stomach. He needed to start searching for a way back home, and he'd gotten more than his fill of dragons at Helgen. Running errands for this Jarl would just get in his way... but he couldn't say no right now. Last thing he needed was to insult this land's ruler and get thrown into a dungeon... or worse if nearly losing his head at Helgen before the dragon attach was any indication. With a defeated sigh, Tim followed obediently.
"Farengar, I think I've found someone who can help you with your dragon project. Go ahead and fill him in on all the details." Tim heard Balgruuf say as he entered the room of the Jarl's court wizard. There was an odd scent in the air that reminded Tim of certain incenses his old friend Raven used to use back at Titans Tower. Across nearly every flat surface in the room was some sort of book, scrolls, potion, or gemstone in haphazard disarray. Then he turned his full attention on the robed man that the Jarl was speaking with, who was now studying him back in return.
"So the Jarl thinks you can be of use to me?"
Tim shrugged. "I'll try to be as useful as I can, though I can't do anything with magic if it involves that."
Farengar smirked. "That shouldn't be a problem. I just need someone to fetch something for me. Well, when I say fetch, I really mean delve into a dangerous ruin in search of an ancient stone tablet that may or may not be there."
It took every ounce of self control Tim had not to roll his eyes. Great, he was being sent to chase wild geese in some ancient, decrepit ruin that was probably booby trapped to hell and back. "And what does this have to do with dragons?" Tim asked, unable to completely mask the annoyed skepticism in his voice.
Tumblr media
"Ah, no mere brute mercenary, but a thinker - perhaps even a scholar?" Farengar observed with renewed interest in Tim. Apparently this seemed to elevate Tim's standing in the wizard's eyes. Farengar then proceeded to give Tim a brief explanation about how until the event at Helgen, stories of dragons were dismissed as fantasies and impossibilities. "One sure mark of a fool is to dismiss anything that falls outside his experience as being impossible."
Tim thought about that for a moment, then shrugged with a nod in agreement. He'd had more than enough experiences like that in his life.
Farengar continued, explaining how he had been researching information about dragons before finally reaching his point. "I, uh, learned of a certain stone tablet said to be housed in Bleak Falls Barrow - a "Dragonstone," said to contain a map of dragon burial sites." He pointed to a location on a large map in his room. "Go to Bleak Falls Barrow, find this tablet - no doubt interred in the main chamber - and bring it to me. Simplicity itself."
"Simplicity itself, huh," Tim echoed before shaking his head and pulling out a map of the region he'd gotten earlier at the general store in Riverwood. He marked the location of the barrow on it before re-folding it carefully. "Anything else you can tell me about this place?" Tim asked.
"It's an old tomb, built by the ancient Nords, perhaps dating back to the Dragon War itself."
Tim nodded as if he knew what Farengar was talking about, though he was mostly clueless. "Nords? Dragon War?" he thought silently. Suddenly, he missed the internet and its nearly infinite amount of wikis. He was suddenly struck with how hard it was going to be to do any kind of in depth research in this place. Did this city even have a library?
The mage must have caught some hint of a confused expression on Tim's face and misinterpreted it. "Ah. Maybe you just want to know how to get there. It's near Riverwood, a miserable little village a few miles south of here."
"So how do you know this 'Dragonstone' is in there?" Tim asked.
"Well, must preserve some professional secrets, mustn't we?" Fargengar replied cryptically. "I have my sources... reliable sources."
Jarl Balgruuf, who had remained during this conversation, must have read the skeptical look on Tim's face. "This is a priority now. Anything we can use to fight this dragon, or dragons. We need it, quickly. Before it's too late."
Tim sighed. "I understand," he said with resignation. "I'll head back out to Riverwood first thing in the morning and make my way to the barrows."
Balgruuf clapped a firm hand on Tim's shoulder. Thankfully, it was his uninjured one. "Thank you, Timothy. Succeed at this, and you'll be rewarded. Whiterun will be in your debt."
Tim brightened a little at that. If the reward was gold, or something that could be exchanged for gold, that could help his dire financial straits. Also, having someone like the Jarl and perhaps even this mage in his debt might help him get home.
Still... Despite Farengar's insistance that this job would be "simplicity itself", Tim knew that it likely wouldn't be anything close to that. His luck just wasn't that good.

NOTE: BTW, here is a shot of the exact placement of Tim's burn scars from Alduin in Helgen. I know the color's really off in this shot, but I wanted to illustrate how extensive the damage really is.

i absolutely despise when ppl paint katsuki as an abuser when horikoshi doesn't even say he's an abuser. Bullying and Abusing has some similar aspects but they are different at the end of it. Katsuki is. a. bully. Izuku recognizes that Katsuki is a jerk and what he did was wrong/bad (and he actually has stated that he hates katsuki, twice) but still sees his strong qualities that make him admire him
(This ask has been sitting in my drafts for the longest time and I thought with the upcoming episodes it was the perfect time to stop procrastinating and finally finish it. Sorry for the wait, nony! I mostly agree with you, but I want to further discuss some points so I hope you don’t mind I got a bit lenghty. You got me an excuse to ramble up some meta haha.)
A TL;DR beforehand: canon analysis supports that Katsuki should not be interpreted as an abuser, but an early bully at most. I also did a little analysis on the early middle school chapter and how it shows BNHA’s society/the peers Deku and Katsuki grew up around set up a bullying enticing enviroment, and how bad translations have us interpret their relationship as more aggravating than it really is - Deku NEVER said he hates Katsuki, for instance. Not once.
I agree that Katsuki is not to be interpreted as an abuser. He does not want to pursue Deku in order to hurt him; instead, he wants to push Deku away from himself. There’s a difference between “I want to possess you, to make you stay around me and hurt you emotionally and physically” - and “I don’t want anything to do with you, go away, don’t interact with me or else”. The first one is abuse. The second one is what Katsuki felt about Deku for most of his life (albeit very simplified). At the times when Katsuki did hurt him - threatening him in middle school, getting out of hand during the heroes vs villains team trial, punching him during the end of the term exam, etc - was because he felt threatened; so his response was to push him away with violence, with an attempt at “teaching” Deku to stay away from his lane.
This is not to defend Katsuki’s actions; this is only a reasoning, not an excuse. His violent behavior towards Deku is still inexcusable. I only want to make clear there’s a difference between “I want to go out of my way to hurt you” and “I will smack you if you push me”, even if his concept of being pushed is distorted to his own experience and it still does not make his violent actions okay. He fears and despises what Deku did at those times: talking to Katsuki as if Katsuki isn’t on the pedestal he grew up believing he was on. This is the core of Katsuki’s feelings. He does not want to abuse Deku. He wanted him to go away, and he WOULD physically/verbally assault him if that meant pushing Deku away from him. And the rest of his threats/aggressive banter is just really how he talks to everyone else.
Tumblr media
Even in canon it’s explicitly stated Deku was the one who insisted on following him because of his admiration, and that was what Katsuki couldn’t stand; he wanted him to be away.
And that was way before. The game is changing, and the development of their relationship is one of the core points of the series. Katsuki recognized him as someone who is not allowed to lose, someone worthy of All Might’s trust, and just very slowly started talking to Deku like he does to everyone else.
I also believe that affirming Katsuki would be an abuser in a romantic relationship with Deku misses the point if the person is okay with it if it’s a friendship/platonic relationship, or if they ship Katsuki with other people. Someone who is abusive does not isolate their behavior to one single person, nor does abuse happen only in romantic relationships. Abusive friendships exist. If one thinks katsudeku is okay as long as it’s platonic, if they believe in their growth and healing enough to believe they can start and share a healthy friendship, then the same should be applied to a romantic relationship. Also if Katsuki were to be an abusive partner to Deku, he’d be the same to other partners. If he were to be emotionally manipulative, possessive, constantly putting him down and hurting him while also keeping him - he’d do it to any other partners. The thing is people who ship katsudeku usually don’t ship it hc'ing that Katsuki keeps his ill behavior towards Deku in the relationship - we cherish the character’s growth and development. The canon Katsuki, the Katsuki with the bad behavior in the older chapters, as stated above, didn’t even wish to keep Deku around as a peer, let alone to form some kind of deeper bond. The romantic katsudeku ship I personally want is the kind where Katsuki grows and changes (as it’s slowly happening in canon) enough past his insecurities towards Deku to be okay with approaching him like he does to other peers. No possessiveness, no emotional abuse, because I personally don’t see that coming from him.
Since we got to this point, something interesting and relevant that I don’t usually see being pointed out is that in the very beginning of the story, it wasn’t only Katsuki opposing to the idea Deku could enter UA while being quirkless. The entire class laughed at him, and the teacher didn’t bat an eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is not to gloss over the fact Katsuki did show unexcusable behavior towards Deku, but I think the scene was set up that way to show it was not only Katsuki’s isolated behavior, but the system, BNHA’s society is shaped to mock and discourage individuals who believe they can become heroes or achieve certain things despite the conditions of their quirk(lesness). The way the society is shaped was Deku’s childhood bully. He was mocked by his peers as young as 4, while at the same time Katsuki was put in a pedestal because of his quirk - which led to his massive ego complex. We can’t analyse their personalities and relationship without taking in account the context they grew up in. Many people frame Katsuki as the single-handed culprit for Deku’s bullying background without taking this whole context into account, while also casting Deku the role of a submissive, persecuted victim when he deliberately chose to stick around Katsuki, and just generally shows to be a character with a lot more agency than that.
And what’s interesting in this scene is that Katsuki didn’t laugh along with everyone else when Deku says he wants to apply and he might have a chance. Because Katsuki takes that seriously. He takes that as a personal offence. The whole point of Katsuki’s ill feelings towards Deku were always that he
feels as Deku is mocking his efforts by believing that himself, a quirkless boy who didn’t do any kind of physical preparation for a heroics course - has chances of becoming a hero as much as Katsuki, who is a born genius AND presumably prepared himself to apply to UA, with training and studying, going as far as scolding his colleague for smoking because he wanted a clean student record.
he feels threatened by Deku because ever since they were kids, as much as Deku admired him, he also saw Katsuki as someone who was able to get hurt and could have a hand offered to like anyone else; Deku saw him as superior in terms of skill, but an equal as a human being, while all the other kids did not. And that made Katsuki not stand him. Because he’s scared of being anything less than the very best, he’s scared of being someone who can be offered help - in his eyes, someone who can be pitied and looked down onto.
And that’s why he reacts with hostility. He wants to intimidate Deku out of even trying to apply to UA. It’s even stated by Katsuki’s colleagues he got out of hand this time, implying it’s not normal behavior for Katsuki (and I’ve seen people saying it was confirmed by Horikoshi himself, though I don’t have sources so don’t quote me on that). Again, he will only seriously smack Deku down if he feels threatened. He does not go out of his way to put him down on a daily basis because he doesn’t want to interact with Deku to begin with.
Tumblr media
Also, Deku actually never stated he hates Katsuki. Not once. What he actually says is closer to “he may be a jerk, but-”, which is how the official english translation translated it, as seen above (stole the picture from this post by @kiraelric because it’s where I found it faster :P). Here’s a post explaining it, and I quote @sugarmagic who gently broke down the first panel - which FA translated as “I hate his guts” - for me:
Basically the word 嫌う, the verb form is “to hate” but 嫌な奴 is “unlikable/disagreeable guy.” So what I’m pretty sure happened is that they didn’t realize な was modifying the word to be an adjective. It’s not describing Deku’s feelings, it’s describing Kacchan’s character. The reading of the kanji is written as “iyana yatsu,” versus “Kacchan ga kurai” which really would be “I hate Kacchan”. Then again, even if they read it that way, the furigana explicitly shows the reading, so I don’t even know what they were thinking.
The translation group Fallen Angels takes way too much freedom and completely distorts some lines, and the dislike of Bakugou/his relationship with Deku in the western fandom was heavily influenced by interpreting it via FA’s aggravated translations. I had people who know japanese tell me how gratuitously innacurate the translations are - as an example, FA translates Deku thinking Katsuki is difficult to deal with as Deku thinking Katsuki causes him to be aware of his own flaws (source). The translations paint Bakugou’s character and his relationships, specially with Deku, unnecessarily harsher than they really are. In fact, something the localisation usually fails to translate is how Bakugou’s “die!” and similar threats are not be taken as seriously in japanese as one would in english - but rather pretty immature and petty (source).
So! If you read up to this point and you’re interested in reading other meta on Katsuki and Deku’s characters and relationship, you should check @explodo-smash’s meta tag. They’re a pretty smart team and can explain/analyse things better than me - in fact their meta helped me a lot understand better their dynamics post my bloody Fallen Angel readings. That’s all for today, and thank you for taking the time to read.

The SFWA Grand Masters, Volume 2
Edited by Frederik Pohl
Tumblr media
A selection of short stories and novellas from the second group of five authors named Grand Masters by the Science Fiction Writers of America:  Andre Norton, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Alfred Bester, and Ray Bradbury.  The stories are science fiction and fantasy, some a mixture of both.  The styles may be different, but all of these authors captured the imaginations and loyalty of readers throughout their decades of writing.
Pohl has selected a decent group of stories, five each except for Asimov who only has four.  Each author’s section has a short biography and an overview of their writing career.  Pohl also provides a list of suggested books.  Overall, this is a solid 4 out of 5.
 Mousetrap by Andre Norton
There are strange sand monsters on Mars, ones that are highly desired by museums back on Earth.  Unfortunately, they are too fragile to capture for transport, dead or alive.  Until prospector Sam Levatts is approached by hustler Len Collins.  Part tragedy with a hopeful ending.  This was a sad read and yet very satisfying in the denouement. Incredibly short, yet tightly written. Norton was a favorite of mine in middle school once I actually started reading science fiction.  I much preferred her science fiction stories to those with a more fantasy bent at that time.  Despite being marketed to children, her stories didn't pull any punches in regard to violence, depression, and even suicide.  Some of her works haven't aged well, but then you'll come across something like this and remember just why she was so very popular among all age groups.  4 out of 5.
 Were-Wrath by Andre Norton
Lady Thra of Laniat flees deep into the forest after the last of her liegemen is killed.  She stumbles across a hut, a cat who speaks telepathically, and an unfinished carving on an armoire.  Then the man-creature appears.  Soon Thra will be forced to face a greater evil than any of the were.  One of the things that Norton was best at was how she gave life to outsiders and how strong her female characters were.  Thra, once a lady, now a woman who has been stripped to a fierce survivor.  Farne, abandoned by his birth family, finds love with a mother-figure until she was taken from him.  There's magic and a hint of romance at the very end, an enthralling fantasy.  As I stated earlier, Norton's fantasy wasn't something I cared for when I first began reading her works.  That changed by the time I hit high school, thanks to Tolkien and Fritz Leiber, among others.  Makes me eager to dive back into the author's fantasy works.  4.5 out of 5
All Cats Are Gray by Andre Norton
Steena was known by many free spacers, a quiet woman who gathered knowledge through listening and a photographic memory.  Her peculiar knowledge had helped many of the men around her, never accepting any reward.  Until she's given Bat, a cat, by a man whose life she saved.  Now she helps another free spacer hoping to get control of an abandoned pleasure spacecraft with a dangerous reputation.  Creepy, cool, and another story with an important cat character.  Steena could resonate with those young girls with a thirst for knowledge, that lived in our own type of gray world, filled with acquaintances and friends rather than lovers.  This is an unusual portrayal and use of an extreme type of colorblindness.  A good read.  3.5 out of 5.
 Serpent’s Tooth by Andre Norton
Seeker Modic chooses Rentarn to guide him and his group into the Questionable Lands.  Modic is determined to find the city of Lonscraft, long deserted, hoping for treasure despite the danger.  But as he says, the treasure isn't the kind Rentarn might think.  The legends and myths learned by all who live in the Between Villages may be Rentarn's only hope of survival.  That and his genetics.  More a novella than a short story, Norton has an interesting treasure hunting quest that mixes fantasy with a tinge of science fiction, leaning heavily toward horror with the mysterious events in Lonscraft.  Who the blue men in the heart of the palace might have been is never truly answered, the reader only receiving hints.  The intriguing possibilities are never confirmed.  A fascinating story.  4.5 out of 5
Rescue Party by Arthur C. Clarke
When the crew of the exploration survey ship S9000 is notified of an inhabited planet's sun going super nova, they rush there to save as many of the inhabitants as they can.  As the increasing heat has already begun to decimate the surface of the planet, it is difficult and dangerously time-consuming to search for any possible survivors.  Defeat followed by surprise followed by a hint of more to come makes for a tightly written story.  And it is an interesting viewpoint, even if filled with old-fashioned science fiction tropes, from tentacles to collective minds.  This is the first story written by Clarke, done in 1946.  A decent enough start for a newbie.  3.5 out of 5
I found it amusing and telling that Clarke’s nickname in fandom was “Ego”.  I doubt if it was entirely friendly.  Despite his constant bragging that he solely invented satellite communications, that wasn’t entirely true.  Yes, he wrote about it in a trade paper, but he wasn’t the only one working on the concept, nor was he the only one who published.  I never cared for Clarke, mostly for his extreme arrogance and weirdness portrayed in interviews, both written and filmed.  I don’t know if this affected how I reacted to his work or not, but he was rarely on my reading list.  There were a couple of stories that I enjoyed, but mostly I veered away from him.
The Secret by Arthur C. Clarke
Henry Cooper, a science reporter, has been sent to the moon by the United Nations Space Administration in an effort to generate support for the Pluto City base.  He has been there before, so he is aware of how things operate.  But this time there is something off.  He contacts an old friend, currently the Plato City Police Department Inspector General, to ask what is going on.  The answer is nothing he could've expected.  *sigh* This is the type of crap that turned me off of Clarke's stories.  It's a great setup but had no real payoff in my opinion.  Yes, we're told the answer to the mystery, nothing past that.  This story was published in 1963, long before the moon landings.  Clarke's views were very pessimistic of that event.  Vastly disappointed, yet not really surprised.  Hopefully the next few stories are better.  The setup helped squeak this rating to 3 out of 5.
 Reunion by Arthur C. Clarke
Aliens are returning to the Earth that they claim to have colonized millions of years ago.  They became aware that the change in the planet's environment had led to mutations in some of the colonists.  Not a problem, they can help fix anything!  While the ending may be trite, almost expected for a story published in 1971, it doesn't make it any less fun to read.  A remarkably tight story for two pages.  4.5 out of 5.
The Star by Arthur C. Clarke
A deep space survey vessel is exploring the Phoenix Nebula, a sun that went super nova centuries earlier.  On the planet farthest from the now dead sun was found a vault that contains the records of the people who died in the blast.  One crew member, a Jesuit who is their Chief Astrophysicist, finds his faith stuttering by what he discovers.  This is actually a good question; can religious faith survive deep space travel?  Yes, I knew instantly what the core idea would be, but in 1952 to deal so directly with faith and science in a science fiction story would've been very brave of the publishers to put out there.  It is also a subject much discussed by both non-believers as well as more scientific-minded believers.  In fact, it was a subject discussed at great length by my Episcopal Middle School Bible Study class with Father Alex Boyer, a man who would've been a Jesuit if he had been Roman Catholic.  This story could be a great discussion starter as well as a good read.  3.5 out of 5.
A Meeting with Medusa by Arthur C. Clarke
Howard Falcon had been seriously injured while piloting a test flight of the Queen Elizabeth IV thanks to a news camera platform that crashed through the dirigible.  Doctors had put him back together, giving him some extras that will come in handy with his next adventure:  a trip to Jupiter, the first gaseous planet to be explored by man.  If this type of story was more Clarke's usual output, I might be able to understand why he was considered one of the Big Three in science fiction.  The sense of adventure is neatly woven into the story, particularly the suppositions made by Clarke about what might be found on and above Jupiter if we continue with ever closer flybys that can delve deeper into the atmosphere.  I will say that the extent of Falcon's "enhancements" took me a bit by surprise, making me wonder just what was left of his physical self.  Best guess would be his brain and nothing else.  Fascinating and disturbing in equal measures.  4.5 out of 5.
The Last Question by Isaac Asimov
As mankind's computers expand in knowledge and abilities, there is one question that is asked over the ages that doesn't receive an answer other than "insufficient data".  But as the millenniums pass and the Galaxy fills with life, immortal life, the question becomes ever more urgent.  How can you reverse or stop entropy?  The ending!!  I should've seen it coming, but surprisingly I didn't.  I really enjoyed the glimpses into how man and computers evolved over the trillions of years, yet both still struggled with the basic question of survival of that which provided power and life no matter how both learned and adapted.  Asimov, in this publication date of 1956, postulates solar power and mankind's increasing reliance on super computers, not to mention increasing overpopulation driving exploration even more than curiosity.  4.5 out of 5.
Ah, Asimov.  So much incredible talent and so much wide-ranging interests he had. Surprisingly I’ve only read a few of his works, particularly the Foundation series and his I, Robot series, as well as some of his short stories.  I was more likely to read his non-fiction works, from science to the bible, or the short story collections he edited.  I would devour his introductions even more than the stories themselves. I’ve found the introductory biography on this author to be more enjoyable as Pohl had a lifetime friendship with Asimov, giving it that personal touch.
It’s Such a Beautiful Day by Isaac Asimov
The day that the Hanshaw Door failed to operate was the day that 12-year-old Richard Hanshaw Jr. began to avoid using it to go to school and back home again.  Nothing his mother tried could deter him other than on rare unexplained occasions. Yet Dick didn't seem to mind using the Door to visit New York or Canton, China.  His mother reluctantly agrees with his teacher to take him to a psychiatrist for probing.  Asimov has provided a most prophetic story about how technology can cause people to withdraw from experiencing the outdoors.  The reasons and type of technology might be different, but the results wind up the same.  Video games, the internet, television, and other media all do the same. Thought-provoking.  4.5 out of 5.
 Strikebreaker by Isaac Asimov
Sociologist Steven Lamorak visits the first asteroid world in order to gather facts about Elseverse's society.  While there he learns it exists under a strict caste system. Igor Ragusnik's family has overseen waste reclamation for generations.  Unfortunately, this makes the family outcasts, unable to meet with nor interact with the rest of the community.  Igor has decided to go on strike until his family is accepted, although the leaders of Elseverse are determined to not give in.  The consequences for the community are dire if something isn't done.  Intriguing as well as an echo of other Earth-based castes such as the Untouchables in India.  A very disappointing solution by Lamorak.  And, frankly, I think his estimate as to how long changes would occur was out of line.  And, as a sociologist, Lamorak should know better.  3.5 out of 5.
The Martian Way by Isaac Asimov
Earth is getting testy about the amount of water used by the Martian colony, especially that used for propulsion by the scavengers who catch shells discarded by rockets launched from Earth for their metal content.  After a year of politicians pontificating, a ration is set up, one that will essentially stop all scavenging.  Certain of the scavengers understand that this could be just the beginning of Earth’s hold on the colonies tightening.  The newest of the scavengers, Ted Long, encourages them to look elsewhere for their water, cut ties with Earth.  Long’s idea?  A newer source of water, the rings of Saturn.  The idea of using water for propulsion purposes in low or no gravity situations really isn’t that far-fetched, but as shown here it would require having a virtually endless supply available.  Asimov has another valid point.  For any colony to be truly valid, they must be self-sustaining.  3.5 out of 5.
 Disappearing Act by Alfred Bester
General Carpenter is leading the War for the American Dream, directing good citizens to become sharply honed tools.  His motto is “a job for everyone and everyone on the job”. After all, how else can they defend the American Dream of Beauty and Poetry and the Better Things in Life? Then a perplexing mystery appears in Ward T of the U.S. Army Hospital that requires an expertise not readily available in Carpenter’s America.  This was beyond a hoot!  And all too possible, at least in regard to a country so involved in a long-term war that they focus their attention on specific talents needed, not the softer interests.  I have little actual knowledge of Bester’s works.  I’ve always known the name, but somehow missed reading anything from him. This story tells me just what I’ve been missing, so I’m looking forward to the remainder of his section in this collection.  5 out of 5.
 Fondly Fahrenheit by Alfred Bester
James Vandaleur and his android are on the run after the android kidnaps and kills a child, something previously thought impossible. I don't know how to describe this. It is a confusing narrative with multiple fluid viewpoints.  Fluid as in it can be hard to understand who is narrating, whether there is two or three present during certain scenes.  Once farther into the story it gets easier to understand what Bester is up to.  But despite the initial confusion, this was an intriguing psychological story.  As Mr. Spock would say, fascinating.  4 out of 5. There's a short commentary following the story itself in which Bester discusses his writing process in general and regarding this particular story.  A nice glimpse into how the sausage is made.
The Four-Hour Fugue by Alfred Bester
Pollution and a lack of great quantities of fresh water for bathing and cleaning has led to an increased use of perfume in the urban jungle slum of the Corridor.  When Dr. Blaise Skiaki's latest product development slows almost to a stop, the company he works for begins an investigation as to the reasons behind it. Mystery and romance over-layered with almost supernatural aspects.  More fantasy than science fiction in my opinion.  I also found the ending a bit rushed, but still adequate.  What I didn't like much and almost turned me off were the racist overtones, especially for a story published in 1974.  For example, the use of the term "gook" and the statement "slitty eyes that would need careful watching". Perhaps Bester was merely implying that the two characters involved with racist, but it was still bothersome to me. 3.5 out of 5.
  Hobson’s Choice by Alfred Bester
Addyer is a statistician by day, dreaming fantasist by night, wanting to live in another time period.  When he finds that, despite the ongoing war and the effects of the atom bombs, the population appears to be increasing, he pinpoints the epicenter to be in Finney County, Kansas.  Directed to go there, what Addyer finds is not even close to what he expected.  An interesting look at those who long to live in another time, with some reality checks regarding the differences that might be encountered.  As the immigration man says, every time is the Golden Age to someone other than the one that they live in.  3.5 out of 5.
  The City by Ray Bradbury
The City has waited for twenty thousand years for this moment.  A rocket filled with explorers from Earth has arrived.  The City awakens, at long last able to fulfill its programming. Creepy.  Very creepy tale of long forgotten actions that resonate with the hapless Earth men.  Short and sharp story.  3.5 out of 5.
The Million-Year Picnic by Ray Bradbury
Timothy was no fool, even as young as he was.  He knew this sudden vacation was more than a fishing trip.  His mom and dad seem nervous.  To keep his younger brothers calm, Timothy plays along, waiting for his dad to explain. This short story turned out to be the first installment into what became THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES.  What this story did was setup the reason why the Mars community ever started, why the original colonists fled Earth.  THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES is one of my favorites and the first Bradbury book that I ever read.  This has me itching to read it again.  Sounds like a trip to the library is in my immediate future.  4 out of 5.
All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury
Venus only stops raining for two hours every seven years. The children don't remember it from the last time the sun came out as they were too young. Margot is the exception. A frail young girl whose appearance appears to be washed out with the constant rain, she desperately wants, needs to see the sun again. Children are brutally cruel, something Bradbury has shown in horrible prose. The ending was so horrible, yet so simple. Quite possibly one of the saddest stories I've read in quite a while, even if realistic. It made it hard to rate. 3.5 out of 5.
There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury
A smart home continues its daily routine, from cleaning to cooking to announcing important dates, for days and days.  Doing its programmed tasks to empty rooms.  Talk about gut-wrenchingly sad.  That view outside the house can rip your heart out. And the dog.  4 out of 5.
The Affluence of Despair by Ray Bradbury
The lure, the addiction of publicity, of seeing ourselves on television.  Not for our accomplishments and successes, only for the bad and the tragic.  A little over two pages and published in 1998, this is anything but fiction.  Take a good look at yourself, world.  4 out of 5.

So this is the Bullshit
Tumblr media
I don’t believe in call out posts. I think they’re unnecessary and usually create a tidal wave of drama over a misunderstanding or an issue that might have been resolved with a simple click of ‘unfollow’ or block’.
This is one of those instances where it is necessary. Where the actions of one person are genuinely harmful and quite likely malicious and it’s actually impossible to know the extent of everything they have done.
Before I proceed, I want to make it clear that I do not condone sending this person hateful asks-or, indeed, any- asks about their behaviour. If you wish to unfollow or block them-or not- then that is your business. But I did not make this post to encourage spiteful behaviour.
I want to thank everyone who contributed to this post, whether it was sending me data, good vibes, proofing or just cheering up my cranky butt at varying points between now and April. Without further ado:-
This is a callout post for user Vallanoble, for actions spanning back to February of this year.
Before I start, I need to point out a couple of things, this is a long ass story. It might take at least one session to get through all of the receipts, of which there are many.
Also: tumblr took a shit on the formatting and none of the links work now. Everything is ugly but I have a back up I’ll post when whatever weird glitch this is fixes itself.
SEVERE TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS POST
Secondly, for much of April, before this story crossed over to tumblr, Vallan went by a nickname that was an amalgamation their general location on my statcounter and the fact they had sent weird anons as opposed to their actual name. Now that the story is being publicly connected to a singular individual, I’ve edited out all references to physical locations from my data and switched out the actual place in the document with the word ‘dipshit’. Yes, this took hours. Yes. I had a LOT of help. This is in the interest of protecting user privacy, however and not dishonesty.
First things first, Dipshit anon is an overly passionate Zen fan. They don’t interact much, so tbh I never really noticed them ?? But for sure they were following me around the time of this post
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/155205738770/1-am-i-the-only-person-who-feels-like-zen-is
(which seems to be the first they reblogged from me) and I recall they had been for quite some time at the time of this one
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/156327734615/i-love-how-you-always-take-survivors-opinions-into
which they later alluded to in a post of their own.
It’s important to actually note several things happening at this point:-
Random overly enthusiastic Zen anon exhibit A // http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/156228295970/you-know-theres-something-that-annoys-me-like
Not so rando enthusiastic Zen anon // http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/156308585305/i-have-a-question-how-did-you-interpret-zens-bad

http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/155500851985/what-do-you-think-to-the-thoery-that-jumin-is-a
Tbh I’m a bit annoyed that tumblr removed their historical notes from posts so I can’t actually reference stuff properly >:[, but January was a very busy month in terms of Zen anons (a pretty recent thing, so I don’t think Dipshit had been following me for THAT long??) asking me about stuff while I posted Jumin fics and other Jumin meta, all while Dipshit anon liked the posts all of thirty seconds after I answered them, which basically led me to the conclusion they’d probably been the one asking in the first place.
In January, they talked to me about fanfiction
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/156305150630/vallanoble-replied-to-your-post-wait-why-dont
This is important. At the very least please take note of the tone
In January, they were also posting this, complaining about Jumin blogs shitting on their favourite character.

This post is fine on its own, but crucial context for what came later.
By this point, I had them tagged on Statcounter, though I didn’t know about these posts until February, when this debacle happened

Tl;dr, in a conversation about how Jumin fans felt uncomfortable about a particular phone call, an anon came out of the blue to change the thread of conversation to Zen. Why is that familiar?!?

Same behaviours as before. Both resenting discussion of Jumin where relevant and blaming me personally for gross fandom behaviours I was not guilty of. I had statcounter data too (no longer unfortunately, as I have the free version), but anyway, I blocked the user and went on my merry way.
Note:- In case it is not clear, I was able to work out the identity of Dipshit and block them based on their historical activity, previous asks they had passed onto me (which in turn led to their tag on stats), stat counter data at the time of the debacle (data I don’t have anymore, but they remained tagged in April) and a cross reference of posts on their own blog.

Once again, crucial context for what comes later.
Prior to JuminV week, I received this ask
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/159180924940/zenxv-and-zenxjumin
This question came off the back of this ask to Jun, which was liked by Dipshit anon.
https://xeraeus.tumblr.com/post/159177453126/what-i-was-asking-a-question
There is currently no evidence to tie the ask itself to Dipshit however, in light of what happened later, I am including that detail nonetheless.
On the first day of JuminV, this was posted
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159427686298/sees-zen-x-jumin-content-stop-that
 (screenshot here)
Tumblr media
followed succinctly by this ask
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/159426686395/am-i-the-only-one-annoyed-about-the-popularity-of
I made the connection to Dipshit Anon after replying. Juminzen week, as far as we know, was not in the works until after JuminV week had already started. Therefore, it’s unlikely that first message is connected to it and it was sent for a different reason.
Note:- Here is Dipshit directly admitting to sending the JuminV ask Part one, part two
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In any case, since I didn’t want to start ship drama, I dismissed them?? I blocked them by IP around this point.
After I responded two more responses came, citing a disability when reading and claiming to ship JuminV over Juminzen tl;dr because it was not fetishisation. I deleted both of these messages and blocked by ip. I would not have deleted them if I had already made the later connection.
I posted to twitter at this point, joking that it was the first day of JuminV and already I’d blocked the entirety of the University of Dipshit by IP.
I posted again a short while later after checking statcounter and making the connection.
Dipshit anon’s name or URL was not mentioned. The fact that they actually studied at the university was assumed, though not confirmed nor referenced by myself the tweets were later deleted and this is to the best of my recollection
Things went quiet, but then the mod of JuminZen week started liking my tweets about Dipshit anon (which in turn made me suspicious, as we did not know one another and did not talk until May). Strange asks started arriving to other bloggers in regards to JuminZen. My statcounter traffic started to spike with visits from the university of Dipshit.
In this period I made jokes about “Dipshit anon”, based on the fact that I had blocked them by ip more than once and they persisted in viewing my blog, leaving me to redirect their individual ip addresses to rick rolls, crash safari and more. In private I also complained about them, because their actions were making me uncomfortable.
They posted this on the 14th, which later made me suspicious

This is what they posted on the 17th
Tumblr media
(screenshot here)
This is definitely about me, considering everything I’ve covered so far and this paragraph
were the same person who talked about listening to survivors expressing discomfort yet you shut me down just for not liking your fave. even when i phrased things nicely and came just to discuss things you immediately responded aggressively and accused me of trying to start drama. well im sorry that i saw you discussing similar topics and thought i could come and express my feelings to you but obviously you only care about specific instances of homophobia or problematic things that occur in the fandom if they have to do with bashing ur gross fave, jumin the ultimate misogynist han
The thing I didn’t understand was why it was framed as if friends were laughing, but
#dragzenweek
#dragzenweek was established as a joke (and regardless of opinions on the matter, it was not actually tagged with Zen’s name), but Alyx reported receiving genuinely hateful comments from fans of Zen and people who hated Jumin over it. One of them was Dipshit anon, which I pointed out at the time on twitter. Alyx posted a screenshot of a post from their notifs with Dipshit Anon’s URL blanked out and I was able to identify it. I personally feel from the manner the screenshot was edited, it would not be possible to identify the user without prior knowledge. (Please don’t take my word for this, however. Here is a screenshot)
Tumblr media
I was in contact with other friends about Dipshit anon’s behaviour and the possibility they were connected to other current dramas (at that point, I was the only person to receive an anon in regards to JuminZen who knew where it came from) both in private and otherwise. I was concerned, but did not want to spread malicious, unwarranted gossip.
It’s important to reiterate that in any given public conversation about Dipshit Anon, they were only ever referenced as such and not as any individual tumblr user. Dipshit-originally- referred to the general location of their Ip and Anon referred to the fact they had sent an anonymous message.
I spoke to Alyx about this at the time expressing concerns that Dipshit anon thought I was perhaps connected, or at the very least somehow involved with dragzen week.
On the 19th/20th April, I made a private document, detailing everything I currently knew, with links, screenshots etc (the first draft of this document). I did not want to keep repeating the story and if I was actually going to suspect this person of behaving badly, I needed proof. This document could not be liked, reblogged etc and and was only circulated privately among friends who had been in conversation about Dipshit thus far. It was a presentation of the facts as I knew them and intended to inform, leaving everyone to come to their own judgement on the matter.
Remember that at this point, beyond sending asks to Alyx and their priors with me, we did not know for sure Dipshit was connected to other dramas and without statcounter data, there was no way to actually prove it.
On the 19th of April, Alyx posted this screenshot to twitter.
Tumblr media
At the time we joked about how this remark was actually unfair of both characters, as while it’s certainly true that Jumin can be quite mean to Zen, Zen is hardly kind to Jumin either. Neither the screenshot nor the subsequent thread were tagged JuminZen or Juzen. You would have had to have gone directly onto Alyx’s page to find it.
This coincides with the following twitter based traffic to my tumblr page.
Tumblr media
Worth noting is that Alyx’s twitter is listed on their tumblr page, where they also received hateful messages about the week on the 20th of April,
Tumblr media
which once again coincides with twitter based traffic from Dipshit Anon.
Tumblr media
Considering Dipshit Anon complained on the 17th about me and my friends and then Alyx received a complaint about their hateful friends, I do not think it’s too much of a stretch to suggest a connection.
Also around the same point, off the back of sentiments from other people that someone was trying to perhaps stir bad feeling betweeen Juminzen and JuminV shippers, I commented that I knew of two potential problems in this regard, one of which was Dipshit anon who I knew for certain had sent me an ask that would have caused drama. I mentioned victim complex, by the way, as a comparison to the Juzen shippers sending asks badgering artists. I was rather suspicious that no matter how shady their behaviour, ultimately Dipshit anon would convince themselves they were doing the right thing and anyone who told them otherwise was being a bully or a homophobe, having seen such behaviour before- both from them and other fandom dramas.
Also worth noting is that my tweet was on my own personal twitter page, which is not listed anywhere and was written J*zen. It was not retweeted and no one commented on it. It would have been impossible to find without either going directly onto my page or searching Dipshit Anon.
Around the 20th, Vess confirms traffic from Dipshit anon coming through from Val’s blog. Vess continues to receive traffic from them over the next few days. This comes after a tweet expressing the belief that Dipshit anon is, in fact, more than one person. In response, I note that the messages I received (of which there were three) came from Dipshit anon, which I know for certain. I do not confirm or deny anyone else’s, however.
That same day, Gillian also questions if Dipshit Anon is making the rounds. However, I personally do not comment on that thread.
Tumblr media
On the 21st of April, Dipshit anon posted hate directly to the Jumin Han tag because “they wanted Jumin stans to see it”
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159807410203/i-just-wanted-to-let-you-know-that-im-in-the-same
Screenshot is here
Tumblr media
Note:- this gained a negative reaction on twitter as it broke established etiquette.
They later received an anon asking to stop sending messages.
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159834049063/look-im-not-here-to-convince-you-that-jumin-has
Screenshot is here
Tumblr media
Note: I don’t know who sent this message. Up until this point, I had complained about them for stalking my blog, sending an ask that would have created a shit ton of drama and expressed my own concerns that they might have been doing the same to other people. None of us had mentioned sending asks about Jumin outside of that one post on the 19th, which related to askZen. This was not officially connected to Dipshit Anon at the time.
They later express righteous anger at the idea of “popular” Jumin and V stans blaming them for drama
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159834850458/apparently-someone-is-going-around-sending-angry
Screenshot is here
Tumblr media
Note:- a quick search made it quite apparent that no ‘popular’ Jumin or V stans had referenced this blogger recently. However, this post comes shortly after dipshit anon was referenced as victim complex 101 on twitter (as dipshit anon). The connection was not made until later.
Dipshit anon claims to have been harassed, without mentioning names.
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159836552898/leave-me-alone-i-honestly-dont-know-what-the
Could be true, considering the Jumin post, though is not tied to that and no asks are published. Feels victimized for content they post on their own blog. Also claims not to have sent anons and only have lurked in the Zen tag, which is, frankly, untrue.
Note the phrasing:  honestly how narcissistic do u have to be to think that one person who you had a disagreement with once is going around over 2 months later harassing every person who like jumin??? like???  <- this is about me

Note:- This message also comes off the back of me saying on twitter (not 100% seriously)  that I’m almost tempted to do a call out. Also note that this mostly came from the fact that they accused us of stalking and bullying on tumblr based on out of context comments from twitter.
Dipshit anon claims that people are spreading misinformation.
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159838725443/honestly-i-dont-like-people-who-blame-things-on
At this point the only information being passed around is a private document containing links to legit sources that cannot be reblogged to avoid this exact thing. References being mocked, which … this blogger has not been referenced on tumblr. Has only been mocked for their efforts as Dipshit anon. Based on things they have actually done.

Tumblr media
Dipshit anon refuses to give receipts on behaviour and references not wanting to start drama even though they spoke about boycotting an event only recently and tagged their hate that same day.

Dipshit anon tells another person that they have only made posts on their own blog irt Jumin, which is not true. They also say that their behaviour comes as a result of wanting their experiences as an abuse survivor to be considered. (Deleted! this private post was only referenced on twitter. In replies to conversations, not all of which mentioned Dipshit anon. Usernames were not mentioned. It was not posted on tumblr. Enough said. It was at this point that everyone started to suspect they were actually watching people’s twitters.

Tumblr media
Note: You cannot just stumble across tweets !!! Also, the topic of conversation WAS Jumin. Dipshit got defensive after I refused to change the topic.
Tumblr media
I would also speculate that this ask Alyx received on the 21st came from Dipshit anon, given these factors:
Tumblr media
The timeline -  having asked Alyx and knowing that ask arrived somewhere between 5am and 3pm cst on the 21st of April, which places it on the busiest period of Dipshit anon’s posts that day. Between the Jumin hate and many other of their corresponding posts
the knowledge that Dipshit anon was watching our twitters
the data that proves they were watching both Vess’ blog and mine for certain
They arrived at Vess’ blog via referral from Val’s. With this in mind and the facts above, it’s not unlikely that during this period they actually lurked everyone’s blogs.
This ask arrived during a very difficult climate when Dipshit felt particularly angry and in their own words, was stressed and emotional.
Not only that, but they themselves were on the receipt of criticism for posting hate in tags on the 21st.
I did a search of their blog for mentions of Yoosung and Unknown and they have explicitly stated a dislike for the Yooran ship  (screenshot)

Tumblr media
This is speculation, but considering the evidence, I believe it is fair.
On the 22nd April, Dipshit Anon sends a message to Alyx (part2)(part 3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They send a message to Serena shortly afterwards
Tumblr media
Here is how the conversation goes:
S:  “I’m a bit confused about what it is you want me to tell you, honestly. I never thought that we were engaged in drama nor were we fighting, considering I’ve never spoken to you before.”
DA:  “No, I didn’t think so either. But apparently you and some others had a post listing things I’ve done and I was really confused?? There was accusations of me sending people who liked Jumin mean asks which I didn’t do? I just wanted to clear everything up and figure out where that was coming from.”
S:  “I don’t recall anyone saying that people were sending Jumin fans mean asks. Can you be more specific?”
DA: “Um, wasn’t that the entire point of what was going on though? There were tweets saying that I was sending harassment to people who like Jumin?Someone sent me a message telling me to stop sending asks to people who like Jumin which I didn’t do? And it seemed like it was from one of you guys. I could be wrong, though.”
S:  “Well, I didn’t send that message, and to my knowledge none of my friends have sent you anything.”
DA: “That was the bulk of my frustration. I saw some tweets assuming that I was sending anon asks to random people about Jumin which I didn’t do, and I was overwhelmed and upset at being told I was doing something that I didn’t.”
DA:  “Okay. Then what was all the hype about saying that I was harassing Jumin fans? And that there was a private post that apparently had a bunch of evidence that I did a bunch of things? I honestly was super confused on what everyone thought I did and that’s why I was upset.”
S: “Do you want to link me to a specific tweet claiming that you’re harassing Jumin fans, because I still do not recall anyone saying that.”
S:  Honestly, it’s really not my responsibility to entertain you, but I’m a bit tired of this and I have exams to study for so I’m going to anyway. First of all, my friends and I aren’t a hive mind. I don’t know what it is they’re saying about you at all times, and just because they say something it doesn’t mean that I personally agree with it.
Second of all, I was referencing this ask that you sent to Louise when I referred to sending asks trying to start shit:http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/159426686395/ … I’m not interested in debating whether or not that was actually your intention; it doesn’t really matter to me because that’s the effect it would’ve had when it landed in Louise’s inbox had she chosen to reply to you seriously. And I know that you were the one who sent that ask, because of this post that you made subsequently, so don’t bother:https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/159700504123/wow-im-feeling-like-shit-i-want-to-die … For some reason, you chose to pretend that her response was some sort of personal vendetta against you for disliking Jumin, even though her response has nothing to do with Jumin’s character at all and simply stated that she doesn’t want to partake in an argument that’ll cause friction with JuminZen fans. And then you did a whole lot of misconstruing by saying that she’s belittling you for your justified anger or not taking your experience as a survivor seriously, which is a very serious and untrue accusation to be making of a person who is also a survivor. Hence, my annoyance with you.
Thirdly, I posted my incredulity at the fact we’re the same age, because of your assertion that adults in the fandom are bullying you despite being an adult yourself, and despite the fact you aren’t being bullied. Getting blocked isn’t being bullied, it’s being ignored by someone who has no requirement to engage with you anyway. Fourth, it annoys me that you said you haven’t sent any asks about Jumin since months ago, when you just sent that JuminZen ask like two weeks ago, because that’s lying. This entire time you’ve remained anonymous in our discussions. We’ve literally been calling you “Dipshit anon”, and your url hasn’t been publicly revealed anywhere. None of this information is available to anyone except in our group of friends, since the post containing these and other links is private, and we’ve only been sending it through private messages to people we are friends with. The fact you decided to listen in on a conversation about things you really did and claim that having that conversation is bullying is your problem, not ours. Have a good night.

Before Dipshit Anon’s response, I learn that Vergil received a strange JuminZen ask and receive clarification that, while he did receive traffic from Dipshit (the location), the one in his askbox was Italian. Around this point we discuss potentially eliminating Dipshit from this particular inquiry, but also to keep an eye on them in case of future problems. I too received traffic from Italy recently.

Dipshit begins deleting posts off their blog around this point. (The final two on the list)

Some notes:-
In regards to point 8, this person is blocked from my blog for reasons I have already explored and it is manipulative, to say the least, to complain about my reaction to them when they had no business being in my inbox in the first place.
The phrasing of point 8 actually is very manipulative in general “oh well, she doesn’t care”. My emotional labor is not for their profit, nor consumption.
Speaking of manipulative, consider the point about age. Dipshit anon repeatedly refers to themselves as a child when they are nineteen, repeatedly complains about adult bloggers and grownups being condescending and in points 8 and 9 complains about an inherently present power dynamic that I should be aware of when speaking to younger bloggers, all while sending asks on anon. I cannot feasibly guess the age of anonymous asks.
I don’t actually remember saying anything about Zen and Seven fans on my twitter or tumblr. I also cannot find anything on my twitter about this. So. Um. Receipt?
I believe that point 11 is true to an extent. I believe they probably found DragZen on the 17th and, from there, found Alyx’s tumblr. I also believe that from there they found Alyx’s twitter, which would give us something of a timeline so far. It certainly brings us to their angry post on the 17th, in any case.
It’s true that I identified them as Dipshit anon, but only after concluding that their URL was blanked out satisfactorily and only because Dipshit anon was the name I had been using from the beginning to identify the person that sent me a questionable ask and continue to load my blog afterwards.
The next part in 15 is just. Where do I begin? Even Dipshit is not sure whose anons I identified as theirs. As a matter of fact, I only identified Alyx’s. When Vess got statcounter, we compared data in the interest of accuracy (as I later did with Vergil), but none of this happened on my public twitter.
When Dipshit refers to Gillian receiving asks, I believe they are talking about this, which I did not confirm
Tumblr media
Point 15/16 makes me really uncomfortable, for reasons I will come to at the end.
Here is them viewing my blog around about this time
Tumblr media
S:  Okay, re: everything else now.
1. All right, if you didn’t consider that ask as being about Jumin then I’m fine with setting aside the idea that you lied about it. It was personally frustrating to me because I really don’t care what asks you sent about Jumin months ago, I was annoyed by the response to Louise’s way of handling the JuminZen asks from a couple of weeks ago. It’s pretty clear by now that you probably didn’t even have that JuminZen ask in mind the entire time all of this was happening, but that’s what I was thinking of in terms of everything else I posted. I have my thoughts on how the situation could’ve been handled differently by both you and me, but at this point I don’t think it matters anymore and in the interest of resolving things let’s call it a misunderstanding and move on. I already said I don’t really want to debate whether or not that ask would actually have started drama so I’m not going to.
2. I wasn’t aware of the timing of your post was after the DragZenWeek incident and not after the ask you sent Louise, but upon re-reading it makes a lot more sense in that context and I’m sorry for making assumptions. To ease your worries, Louise wasn’t stalking your blog. She has an app called StatCounter that allows her to see where people are accessing her blog from—that’s how she put together who it was that had sent her other messages prior to the JuminZen ask, and that’s how she was able to block your IP address. By the way, she also knows you’ve been bypassing her IP block to visit her blog these last few days.
I can understand why you were stressed, honestly. I disagree with the way you do a lot of things, but I’ll readily admit that I personally made a lot of assumptions that I didn’t have a real basis for making, and I’m sorry. I stand by my statement that no one claimed you were going around and harassing Jumin fans with asks, though.
To explain my own point of view, most of what was annoying *me* was that you were conflating responses to you with disliking you for liking Jumin. I can’t speak for anyone else, obviously, but I personally could not care less if you hate Jumin. Speaking for myself here, I’ve said multiple times that although Jumin is my favourite character, I’m completely sympathetic with the reasons people would have for hating him, and I’ve also said that I would never engage in a debate over him with someone who says Jumin reminds them of past abuse because that isn’t my place to speak. Most if not all of my friends have said the same or similar, and honestly, I don’t want friends that don’t have that attitude and when I dislike someone I make it pretty damn easy to tell. But you were accusing Louise of that, which I think is especially insensitive because Louise is also a survivor, and now you’re saying that you meant for all of that to apply to Alyx too—not that you need to know this, but Alyx heavily criticizes Jumin’s route for the exact reasons that you probably would. Again, it’s a very serious thing to accuse people of being abuse apologists, especially when you don’t know the situation.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m sincerely sorry that you were hurt by my words yesterday, especially because some of the claims I was making were unfounded. Gossip is something I generally try to avoid, and I think this entire situation was a good reminder as to why I do that. I still don’t think this falls under the definition of bullying, but I do empathize with your perspective and I’m sorry for my involvement.
I’ll go back and delete any posts about this that were made by me. Here are my recommendations for you:
1. I don’t know if you have the extension XKit, but it allows you to blacklist certain words so that posts containing them don’t show up when you’re browsing tumblr, and it allows you to block posts that you dislike/don’t want to see. It’s a good tool to help you stay safe while navigating the site, and I think you should probably put Jumin’s name into it since you’ve mentioned that you find him severely upsetting.
2. Use the “anti” tags when you want to discuss character hate/critique, or don’t tag at all. It’s totally within your rights to critique a character, and using the anti tag means that anyone who chooses to interact with your post is consenting to do so knowing what they’ll be getting into. When you tag a post, you’re basically giving people permission to engage if they want to, so if you want to have a critical discussion about a character with like-minded people or people who disagree but are interested in having a discussion, that’s your way to do it. If you only want to discuss with like-minded individuals, you can throw on an “#I’m not interested in debating this” tag so people who disagree know to stay away. There’s a reason none of the DragZenWeek posts were tagged with Zen’s name and this is that reason.
3. This goes for both of us, but if you’re seeing something happening out of context, don’t assume that you know what the context is. You didn’t know what it was I was talking about when I discussed asks you sent, I didn’t know what you were talking about when you made that post (and I also assumed it was you sending the other asks, double bad on me). I don’t think I’ve anything more to say on this subject. If you do, feel free. Thank you for taking the time to contact me in spite of your social anxiety—I understand that that was hard to do and I appreciate it.
Dipshit Anon:
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate you clearing things up. I usually tag my posts with anti-Jumin, but at that time I was still emotional and defensive about things I previously mentioned, so I thought that tagging it would send a one time message to people that like Jumin to not harass survivors that feel uncomfortable with him about it. That’s all I wanted. It was a bad move on my part and I’ve gone and fixed it and I’m sorry.
I forgot to clarify these things - I didn’t think Alyx was being insensitive towards me being an abuse survivor - I made an error when constructing that sentence and it made it seem like I was including them in that statement. I just was upset because I was under the impression that they thought I was pathetic and attention seeking for my deleted post on DragZenWeek.
I can’t remember what exactly happened that made me say that thing about Louise being insensitive to abuse survivors and not liking me because I didn’t like Jumin, but that wasn’t about the JuminZen ask I sent or the previous one for February. It was something to do with her statement about me being attention seeking and seeing some responses to other people’s asks who criticized Jumin or something. I honestly can’t remember, and looking back at the post I don’t know why I said that, and I’m sorry.
I feel like a lot of this was due to misunderstandings by me and a little on the others sides and I reacted defensively and angrily to situations when I didn’t know the entire story. That just led to more statements and miscommunication on both sides and it spiraled out of control. Nevertheless, I apologize wholeheartedly and I appreciate you giving me a polite and courteous reply. I’ve been dealing with some tough stuff in real life for the past few months, including a traumatic brain injury, that’s clouded my judgement and made me more volatile and sensitive to criticism or what I misunderstand as negativity directed at me. I know that doesn’t excuse anything, but I just wanted to clarify that I’m not usually like this, and I usually keep to myself. I’m digressing, but I sincerely do apologize. I appreciate your clarification and will definitely do the the things you recommended. If you could, it would be very much appreciated if you could pass along my apology sentiments to everyone else that was involved. You don’t have to, and I’m not expecting them to forgive or unblock me or anything, I just want them to know that I am sorry and I’m usually a reasonable and nice person when not under extenuating circumstances.
Thank you again and I wish you the best.
Also - clarification about why I didn’t have Jumin’s name blacklisted - I’m on mobile Tumblr a lot, because it’s just easier for me to use because of a lot of convoluted reasons related to my learning disabilities and mental illnesses. But I do have them blacklisted on my computer, and when I’m on mobile if I see a particularly terrible hate post about Zen or a post that is praising Jumin but uses examples of Zen and why he comes up short in comparison, I’ll block that person. I usually don’t really care and avoid that stuff, but I have encountered several blogs in particular (none of which belong to you or any of your friends) that express extreme animosity towards people who say Jumin makes them uncomfortable or reminds them of past abuse. That’s kind of where that ask response was coming from. I just wanted people not to bug others who don’t like him. But it was done in the wrong way and I’m sorry. Also, I was only checking Louise’s blog because I was paranoid that she was going to post things about me and I wouldn’t be able to see them. I’m not going to do that anymore and I’m sorry.
And those blogs I mentioned that attack abuse survivors make numerous posts saying stuff like “if you say jumin made you uncomfortable I don’t like you” or “people who are triggered by jumin are the worst” and etc. Again, it wasn’t you or any of your friends, but some of those people who do that were really insensitive. I’m sorry for tagging the post though and getting y'all dragged into it.
Notes:-
There is a difference between EXPLAINING your actions where relevant and EXCUSING them. And excusing them is very much what’s happening here, given this phrasing:  I’m usually a reasonable and nice person when not under extenuating circumstances.
Disability or stress or emotion is not an extenuating circumstance for accusations of abuse apologism and stalking, nor is it an extenuating circumstance for repeatedly insisting on engaging in conversation with someone who has blocked you. It’s not an extenuating circumstance for flat out lying in some cases and manipulating the facts in others. It’s not an extenuating circumstance for listening on a conversation you aren’t included in and choosing to accuse the people having the conversation of bullying instead of asking for context.
Secondly, Dipshit’s comment here:  I forgot to clarify these things - I didn’t think Alyx was being insensitive towards me being an abuse survivor - I made an error when constructing that sentence and it made it seem like I was including them in that statement. I just was upset because I was under the impression that they thought I was pathetic and attention seeking for my deleted post on DragZenWeek.
Given the timeline we have so far, their post on the 17th, Alyx’s asks around that period and the traffic on my blog, I think it’s more accurate to suggest that they WERE including them and are backtracking.
Also in regards to this:  I can’t remember what exactly happened that made me say that thing about Louise being insensitive to abuse survivors and not liking me because I didn’t like Jumin, but that wasn’t about the JuminZen ask I sent or the previous one for February. It was something to do with her statement about me being attention seeking and seeing some responses to other people’s asks who criticized Jumin or something. I honestly can’t remember, and looking back at the post I don’t know why I said that, and I’m sorry.
Once again, given our timeline, the fact that if I called them attention seeking at all it wasn’t until after the 19th in replies to other people and Alyx and I chatted about Jumin on twitter on the 19th, I feel it’s fair to conclude that this could be a legitimate memory blank, but it’s more likely to be backtracking.
It’s also very clearly backtracking irt:  but that wasn’t about the JuminZen ask I sent or the previous one for February, when both are explicitly referenced in the post itself.
I usually don’t really care and avoid that stuff, but I have encountered several blogs in particular (none of which belong to you or any of your friends) that express extreme animosity towards people who say Jumin makes them uncomfortable or reminds them of past abuse.
This is the second (?) time they’ve angrily drawn other people into a conversation about unrelated topics and they have made posts about boycotting events, they tagged their hate only recently etc. I think it is fair to conclude from all evidence so far that they do care and they don’t avoid that stuff.
I’m on mobile Tumblr a lot, because it’s just easier for me to use because of a lot of convoluted reasons related to my learning disabilities and mental illnesses
I went back to count and Dipshit anon mentions their illnesses, injuries and more on seven separate occasions and always in the context of gaining pity, thereby shifting the power dynamics of the conversation.
Dipshit Anon remains blocked as of April 2017
As of 22nd of April 2017, they continue to load pages of my blog, despite their own statement that they would not:
Also, I was only checking Louise’s blog because I was paranoid that she was going to post things about me and I wouldn’t be able to see them. I’m not going to do that anymore and I’m sorry.
Tumblr media
Also worth noting is that this traffic came through a t.co reference, which is the shortened url format from twitter.
In response to this, I made my tweets private again and removed the link to my blog from my twitter bio.
As of May 8th 2017,  they continue to load pages of my blog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe this occurred because of a reblog of this post.
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/160437244740/your-recent-reblog-made-me-realise-how-mistreated
As of the 10th of May, I receive traffic on a singular VxMC-centric fic from Dipshit (the location). This traffic recurs over several days right up until the 14th.
Tumblr media
I do not usually receive traffic from Dipshit the location with this amount of frequency. I also knew that Dipshit the person had been browsing my blog. This put them on my radar.
On May 15th 2017, I learned of this ask on Void’s blog
http://vo-dcc.tumblr.com/post/160686201606/i-saw-you-were-one-of-the-artists-for-the-zen
Tumblr media
(screenshot).
At the time, I had my suspicions that Dipshit might be involved and a brief check on their posts that day reveals that Dipshit did intend to submit to the fanzine.
Tumblr media
 (Link)
https://vallanoble.tumblr.com/post/160685696123/zen-fanzine-project
At approximately 9am that morning, I receive traffic from them on statcounter.
Tumblr media
The interesting thing about this is that at first I was not entirely sure why this traffic happened. I do not reference anything about this incident on my blog until approximately midday, when I reblog Void’s answer to a second ask.

Tumblr media
(Screenshot) (Here is the time stamp of when I actually reblogged it)
Tumblr media
From 8.30am onwards, Void and I were talking privately about the situation, at which point (a little before this conversation)
Tumblr media
Void referenced typing out a long post, which likely became the one they later posted. (Having chatted to Void, they later confirmed that it was in fact, already posted by the time of that screen.) This creates something of a potential timeline of Dipshit seeing the post shortly after it was posted and following through to my blog shortly afterwards. (Note: I believe I was not the only one to receive this treatment, but I’ll get to that later)
In any case. I asked Void to check if they were blocked by Dipshit and it later transpired that they were.
Tumblr media
I encouraged Void to get Statcounter, we compared notes and here is a full compilation of all traffic
Tumblr media
  from
Tumblr media
Dipshit received within the first day of installation. (Pls note that the date is different because of time zones. I live in Britain and for me these times are in the evening of the 15th. US people would be even further back in the day)
Here is a screen of Dipshit later admitting to sending both asks covered so far to Void
Tumblr media
Note that I said I was not the only person whose blog potentially received attention from Dipshit as a result of Void’s posts. I believe that Dipshit actually went through the blogs of several people who either commented or expressed support for Void over the course of those few hours spanning from when they first received an ask to the 9am response.
This would not only fall in line with current evidence at hand, but also their actions in April.

When reviewing statcounter data, it’s clear that Dipshit reviews the #notes of posts and flits from one blog to another.
While this was happening, I was in conversation with user mariamagica, having seen them comment on Void’s post that they knew who was sending the anons. Considering that this was the same person who had liked my tweet about Dipshit Anon way back in April, I was curious to know what they knew and if we had any shared experiences.
It transpired that Dipshit was so well known to them and had caused them so much bother that they were able to reference them by name within a matter of seconds. They sent me this screenshot sent to the askbox of the Juminzen week blog.
Tumblr media
Mariamagica had them blocked, but I encouraged them to get statcounter and here is their Dipshit traffic from the 15th.
Tumblr media
A short time after this, Vess and Jun confirm that Dipshit followed them that same day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dipshit continues to lurk my blog.
Tumblr media
Having gone over the events of the day, I made a post at 18:46 my time. This is a soft warning and a pre-emptive call out. Up until this point I had not said anything about Dipshit anon publicly on my tumblr, but I was running increasingly low on patience. I blocked them in February and kept the details to myself at the time, but they continued. In April, we resolved it peacefully but they continued. At this point they were on strike three.
In my post, I listed three examples of asks from Dipshit.
http://fromthedeskofelizabeththird.tumblr.com/post/160701054230/attn-mysme-fandom
These were all examples I could confidently attribute to Dipshit and as it gained so many reblogs, I gained
Tumblr media
  a
Tumblr media
    lot of traffic
Tumblr media
  from Dipshit
Tumblr media
in that period.
This traffic extends to my personal blog
Tumblr media
I received an ask

Tumblr media
-Not my ask but trying to pull the high ground with me about it anyway? Check
-“Please consider the abuse victims!!1″ To a survivor? Check.
-Sending a really questionable anon in general? Check.
After my response saying that if I received any more messages I would reply with their URL, Serena got a message from Dipshit, complaining that I should apologise to their friend
Tumblr media
for blaming them for things Dipshit had done.
Tumblr media
This earns the biggest of sighs and rolliest of eyes from me and there are hundreds of things I could say about it, such as the sheer unlikeliness of a random mysme blogger I have never heard of before (and incidentally never blocked) showing up to send me an ask with the precise same objections as Dipshit while Dipshit is on my blog, all while having no involvement with what Dipshit is doing. Even Dipshit acknowledged they were friends and went so far as to link their Zen centric blog.
They later post the following screens to their blog, which confirm that they sent these

asks to Stars and encouraged another person to send more: 1

I’m especially interested by the use of the word “demonise”. Demonise only makes sense in terms of me addressing Dipshit and publishing their URL, neither of which have anything to do with their friend…who up until that message was anonymous in this conversation.

You may recall I referenced user capitolscum. That is the personal of mmscum, who I was also in touch with at this time. Through the reblogs of my Attn:-Mysme fandom post, I became aware that they too had received strange anons.

It’s past midnight now and I’m about to go to bed. I have only one thing to say on this matter, however.
The adage that the internet is not your safe space is not a suggestion that it should not be safe. It means that the internet is not the safe place of any individual person. It belongs to all of us and there is going to be opinions, ships, characters etc you do not like personally. But it is NO ONE’s job to keep you safe but your own. It’s nobody else’s responsibility to write characters as you see them. It’s no one else’s job to keep the content you don’t like off your radar or create the content that you do. There’s no justification for treating real people badly over fictional things.

I am not a shipper of Juzen and so bad behaviour within the community is not something I would know of immediately or in much depth, however:
Dipshit considers an anti Juzen week to educate the homophobic women who ship it.
Tumblr media
This is an interesting one, as it coincides with the appearance of the blog juzenisgross, which specifically posted excerpts from Why does he do that (a book about abusive relationships and domestic violence) in the juzen tags on the first day of juzen week.

This is a loose thread on its own. However. This is the time stamp of the first post on the blog.

This is Dipshit on my blog.

Once again, possibly coincidence, but incredibly unfortunate if so.

now if you're calm enough to answer this, what is your general opinion of the new Mary Poppins, beginning from the first promo pic of Emily, to Lin's get up, down to the filming and the leaked photos of Mary in the red dress. are you optimistic about the new movie? what is your inner Pamela thinking? thoughts?
Haha, I am calm now! XD
Well .. okay.. It’s hard. I’m for and against it at the same time. In that, I wouldn’t mind at all if the movie was cancelled all of the sudden. Then I wouldn’t risk being disappointed by it and I just don’t like the idea of being in a bigger fandom, drama will probably happen and I can’t deal with that. I like how it is now.
I mean, and of course, there’s pamela, I have been talking about this for ages, how she wouldn’t want this and how she’s turning in her grave and all that. Like.. I’ve talked about that all plenty. I’m getting a bit tired of discussing it, somehow feeling I have to prove again and again I’m on her side. But you know, it is what is. Me complaining about it isn’t going to change much. And I’d like to think Pamela wouldn’t want me to waste time getting mad at disney and all and stating the obvious. Disney doesn’t really get what Pamela’s Mary, and in my eyes the true mary poppins, is about. And they fucked her over. And she didn’t really want any other mary poppins being made, by anyone really. As long as she wasn’t in complete control I think, because she DID in fact work on a sequel in the 80ies with a close friend, brian sibley. I don’t know exactly why she did that, but I think it was mostly because she realised she could finally work with someone whom she trusted, and she was more in control of the story. plus, I think it was for money too, I mean not because of money and money alone, but because of what she could do with it, like getting travelling more to study whatever she was into those days, and for other things, whatever, it doesn’t matter, she had her own reasons and they were valid no matter what (jesus fuck ive just made a point about how i don’t really wanna discuss the pamela aspect of this anymore but meanwhile ive written a whole paragraph. like i said pamela would just want me to get the fUCK over it cause it’s no use like @ loes from pamela from heaven: go a read a book or something and educate yourself jesus christ)
i’ll like the movie cause it’s about mary poppins and i’ll always love anything mary poppins. like ive said before, they could make a my little pony movie about mary poppins and i’d watch it and love it
there have been times i was quite optimistic about the possibilty of this movie being very book accurate, such as emily saying she was reaching more for the books to decide on what her portrayal would be like, and the characters that have been picked to be part of the movie (such as the balloon lady, ‘balloons and balloons’ has always been of my favourite chapters) and the screenwriter seems like a cool guy who knows what he’s doing. (let’s just hope he doesn’t end up disappointing me with a shitty spineless storyline that’s too sugar coated and where jack ends up bringing the family back together like bert did in the orginial movie cause that was just ridiculous, mary doesn’t need anyone’s help)
oh god i’m getting tired of talking about this i should just keep it short. the costumes disappointed me, emily is too pretty to be mp imo, i’d much prefer someone older, more solid looking (does this even make sense?) like rachel griffiths, a cut the bullshit and just do the work - kind of mary. a mary who i can look in the eyes and believe when she says she knows everything and has lived a thousand years and knows all the secrets of the universe and has danced with the sun and stars. a mary that’s all about what’s on the inside. a mary with gravitas.
lin hardly seems enthusiastic about it. in the beginning he seemed to be but now it just looks like he merely views it as a job cause he noticed it’s not going to be that spectacular.
i don’t want dick van dyke in this movie if julie isn’t going to be in too, like that’s ridiculous and it makes me feel like he’s begging for attention or something and seems rather hypocritical when at first he said he didn’t think they could pull of a new mp movie if the shermans, walt disney and julie weren’t there. and called lin ‘that guy from hamilton’ like fuck off. have some respect. i know he’s a nice dude but that really pissed me off. along with the things he has said about pamela hating him and julie which is total bullshit, she only hated him and he’s gotta learn to suck it up and live with it
to summarize, OBVIOUSLY disney being a true company these days, they’re just doing it for the money, and because they noticed mp’s rise in popularity after saving mr. banks. this is not anymore about a dad finding his daughter reading a book, laughing so hard, him reading it too, and discovering a character he came to adore, and had his own vision of, a vision he wanted to share with all of us. while i strongly agree with his vision and how he dealt with pamela, at least the original movie had HEART, because all the people working on it were there not for the money, because they believed in the story and were passionate about it. that’s what made the movie such a succes and that’s why we all love it, no matter who we are. i think it’s impossible to completely hate it. even pamela didn’t completely hate it, you gotta remember that.
in short, i have buried my hopes of this being my dream come true book accurate movie, cause that’s too good to be true, disney being disney these days. none of my complaining is going to change that. i will be excited about the movie, because it’s mary poppins, it’s my special interest, and just because i am excited about it, will not mean i suddenly don’t care anymore about pamela.
anyways that’s it i guess. holy shit what a messy reply.
