She wasn’t sure what drove her to learn such a skill, but it had become for a while almost a passion. She’d devoured every book in Theo’s library as it talked about the subject, and before long she’d started to have dreams full of shiny crystals and pickaxes and mining songs which she understood from some of the books, were a favourite of the dwarfs who worked into those places. It was almost too easy to imagine them with their little colourful caps, as they were said to wear back in the day, working tirelessly from dawn to dusk in the mine, with only themselves and their songs as company. It almost seemed merry had it not been for the thought that in many ways, them being forced underground for such long periods of time was more akin to imprisonment than anything. It was definitely reinforced when she found out that the reason the Dwarf’s Mine had closed long ago was because of a cave-in that took the lives of the workers who had the misfortune of being inside at that time.

Thoughts about Conference Realignment

It’s easy to understand why Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner Jim Phillips is feeling like George Jetson these days (“Help! Help! Jane, stop this crazy thing!”).  One year ago, he was feeling content with “the Alliance” that had been hammered out with B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren and the PAC-12.
Less than one year later, it’s all gone.
In just the last six weeks, Warren and the B1G snapped up PAC-12 cornerstones Southern Cal and UCLA, and negotiated a new TV deal that will provide $100 million a year to each and every team in his conference.  He’s also talking about continuing the conference expansion, potentially bringing in four more teams to push his membership to 20.  And he wants to expand the national playoff to 16 teams.  And pay his players with the boatloads of money that brings in.   
Here are a few other facts that have to be keeping Phillips up at night.
With the new TV package, it’s now estimated that the B1G will be paying each of its teams $129 million per year by 2029.  The Southeastern Conference is expected to be paying out $118 million per team by 2029.  Both of those figures are before any additional expansion – more on that below.
The ACC?  Their 2029 projected per team payout is just $62 million per year.  I’m sure that’s not what ACC teams were expecting when they signed the Grant of Rights (GOR) deal that runs through 2036. That difference can pay for a lot of things to increase the competitive gap between the B1G/SEC and the ACC.
That significant financial gulf in payouts will only get worse if B1G makes good on that expansion strategy and the SEC follows suit, which it would most certainly do.
If/when the B1G and SEC move on expansion, eight chairs at the “grown up table” open up…but there are 38 schools that will be eyeing those seats (Notre Dame plus the schools left in the ACC, Big-12, and PAC-12). That would force one or more existing ACC teams to lawyer up and take that GOR deal to court so that they can bolt the ACC for greener pasture$$$.
Pretty wild couple of months – and what’s coming will likely be wilder.  Part of me would love to see the B1G and SEC hold “American Idol” style tryouts with the schools wanting to jump on those contracts.  (e.g., Syracuse proudly saying “I’m the next B1G member!!!” before singing “Horse with No Name” off-key).
While a publicly-televised feeding frenzy would be interesting to watch, I think the following is more likely to be how this all plays out:
The B1G adds Washington, Oregon, Stanford and Notre Dame to get to 20.
The SEC adds Clemson, Florida State, UNC and either Virginia or Virginia Tech to reach their 20.
The remnants of the ACC and BIG-12 merge with some schools from the AAC (e.g. UCF, Cincinnati).
The PAC-12 and Mountain West merge.
Everyone else is left to figure things out on their own.  I wouldn’t be shocked if some schools dropped football altogether rather than participating in the arms race.
Why Notre Dame to the B1G rather than the ACC?  Well, refer back to those per school revenue totals.  Were they to join the ACC, the Irish would not be able to make up the gulf that currently exists with the B1G.  And if they join the B1G, the existing gulf would turn into a Pacific Ocean sized gap.  Plus a move to the B1G as described above would keep some of their traditional games intact and it makes more sense geographically.
It’s really stunning how fast this is all happening. Make no mistake, there are now two major conferences in college athletics – and everyone else is on the outside looking in.  It’s almost like a Premier League arrangement, without the relegation (which will NEVER happen in this set-up because the money is too big).  It’s even possible that within 10 years the B1G and SEC will be staging their own playoff and everyone else will doing their own playoff.
In the end, many supporters and academicians will decry this and mourn the loss of the “traditional” college athletic structure.  They have a valid point.  Obviously, this will bring an end to a lot of match-ups we have come to love (e.g., UNC vs Duke).
While there is certainly some excitement to all of this – especially if your team is in the B1G or SEC – I have to wonder if what we are going to end up with is going to be unsavory and overly corporate.  I hope it won’t, but when there’s this much money involved, it seems inevitable we will wind up with something that makes us all long for “the good old days.”
And we haven’t even started the conversation on how sustainable this new model is or what happens if/when the TV money dries up. Anyone?  Anyone?

Reiner couldn’t seem to fathom the butterflies wreaking havoc in his stomach. It came out of nowhere, as it often happened to be. Once in a while, he could feel his guts twisting as his chest filled with overflown emotions at odd times. Reiner hated it when it happened, because as much as he wanted to convince himself that he wasn’t self-aware of his image, those feelings could potentially strip himself off of his cool guy status.
Reiner had come to realize that such strange feeling often occurred caused by the sight of you.
It could be anything. Things so mundane, so simple. Like the way you twisted the pen in your fingers, the way you squinted your eyes at the blackboard during a lecture, and how you hastily scribbled things on your leather-bound notebook.
Or maybe it’s the way you sighed deliberately loud when someone uttered a dumb, sexist remark in class with no trace of shame, after they tried to debate your sound, well-researched opinion, and how you’d resolved it with a sarcasm that could disintegrate a man’s ego. Reiner sat on the corner of the classroom, disguising his chuckle by clearing his throat, finally coming to experience what they had called butterflies-in-your-stomach all along. 
At that point he had found himself painfully and helplessly in love with you.
He was well-aware of how different the two of you were. Reiner was the athlete, admitted to the uni through football scholarship, and you were the hard-working academician that mostly kept to yourself – hard to approach, hard to tame. Reiner hated how stereotypical he was – tall, buff, blonde, jock, with cheerleader exes and a DM full of thirst trap from his assembly of admirers. Reiner once wished he was anything but a cookie-cutter of everything you had been appalled of.
Reiner could feel every ounce of confidence he had ever had shriveled around your presence. It’s the way the two of you almost collided to each other at the campus hallway, and the way you threw an acknowledging, formal smile at him before striding away that made his heart ached. He wished you’d run to him and shriek his name with affection, but Reiner realized you were not one of his cheerleader exes, and not that he wanted you to be one. You were an anomaly he had yet to understand. A misplaced figure sticking out of his history of penchant for conformity.
“I really like you.” one day he finally said. Never had he been weak on the knees for a confession to any girl before, but this one occurrence? He did.
He didn’t know how he mustered the courage, but after hours, days and weeks he had spent trying to know you – learning your favorite song, accompanying you for book hunting, baking your favorite muffins, texting you good morning and good night – he finally got you alone, in the campus library, only five minutes before closing time.
You laughed at first, because the confession sounded ridiculous to you. The last thing you needed was a horde of girls sending you anonymous hate comments on Insta because you took the campus’ most eligible hunk off of the market. But he didn’t laugh along, and that was when realization hit you.
“So, is that why you’ve been following me around?”
Reiner furrowed his thin, almost non-existent brow, “What do you think?”
“I thought you were just bored with your jock friends,” you scoffed, “because you know, I’d be bored out of my ears too if all I ever heard all day is insecure men constantly praising themselves.” you glanced at Reiner, trying to discover even the slightest amusement on his hardened face to no avail.
“Reiner, are you serious?”
He sighed, couldn’t believe his ears. The first time ever Reiner caught you being stupid beyond recognition, “For the millionth times, yes.”
“You’ve only said it once, though.”
“For fuck’s sake,” the jock grunted, but there was a slight smile arose from his face, “I like you, really much. Times eight hundred ninety-eight thousand.”
“And?”
“So would you be my girlfriend?”
And you said yes, after three minutes of hesitation, you said yes. With a laughter. Because the absurdity of you being with someone like Reiner was lurid. Yet still, you were in no capacity to lie when his good morning text had been the most unsubstantiated text you looked forward to every day.
You wondered why? It’s just text. But maybe, you tried to convince yourself, it’s because of the effort he put, of trying to wake earlier before you every morning although he was hardly a morning person. Or it’s the way he listened to your kind of music although he was practically tone deaf, and returned to you the next week with his analysis on why your favorite band’s first album was their masterpiece and that sadly they never outdid it with any of their following albums.
And maybe, it’s the sight of the topless Reiner in the football field, after a home match. The way he was quick to run to the side of the field with his Captain instinct, lurching himself towards the start of a brawl between the two teams’ players, heated by animosity over the match result. Reiner was strong enough to break at least ten muscular jocks apart from throwing punches at each other, and with his deep, stern, authoritative voice, he commanded them to “Stop it. Fuck off.” You remembered immediately leaving the bleachers and found the nearest toilet because you needed to breathe and that you felt things simmering in your nether area. You never felt like that before to any of your exes.
Reiner knew the mutual pining between the two of you was evident, and so he was left puzzled when you said, “But please don’t tell anyone yet.” He asked why, but you only shrugged your shoulder with an answer that gave very little explanation, “I just don’t feel like having people talk about us.”
Reiner trusted you, because at first, he thought it was for modesty, you were not a fan of the limelight, evidently. Or it’s for practical reason, you don’t want to be burdened by society’s expectation on how two adults in relationship should be. Reiner could make 1,000 excuses for you that would justify your terms and conditions, so he went with what you wanted, because he was so hopelessly into you.
Nonetheless, still he enjoyed holding your hand in the dark alley of the campus – away from all the prying eyes, or the girls that’d giggle walking past the beautiful giant. Still he liked to have you sleeping naked in his embrace, making lazy circles with his calloused digits on your small back, at the emptiness of his dorm room when his roommate was home early for Christmas. Still he enjoyed teasing you at unassuming place, at the quiet library, studying together in silence for the upcoming exams, he’d be sitting next to you, leaning to his chair and slithered his right hand underneath your sweatshirt, to playfully and quickly unclasped your bra, only for you to smack his stomach in annoyance. He liked you, and he liked how you scurried to the restroom to fix your bra. He liked to be with you, no matter in silence or in noise.
However, after six months, questions started to throb incessantly inside Reiner’s mind. Even after all the time you had spent together, why must still he go alone to the football team soiree? Why would you let his team mate thought that Reiner was single, and promised him chances with girls, left and right? Why were you unfazed to see the girls sliding into his DMs? And when you put on that tight, backless black dress on New Year’s Eve, why would you put it for your friends’ party, and not for his eyes only? Why would you color your lips with the blood red Chanel lipstick Reiner gave you, and smile at other people that’s not him?
Reiner could not make sense of you. He pondered, he wondered and he became jealous. He’d look at you intently and see whether there was any trace of other man on you that he had not recognized? He’d become quiet and his friends thought he had gotten sensitive over nothing. The captain had become agitated, irritable and his head was hardly in the game – all with seemingly no reason.
Reiner began to think that he knew the reason why. He thought it’s the boy you’d met at the Academic Writing class, with stupid name and equally stupid undercut. Porco Galliard, you said his name was. In an instance his name had become a staple in your conversation. When Reiner asked you out for a dinner, it’d be like, “Ah sorry babe, I got this assignment with Porco.” A trip to the zoo? “You know, Porco have this funny experience with apes.” A night out in his dorm? By the point Reiner had a half-boner forming already seeing you in your lounge shorts, you’d be giggling and stayed busy with your phone. Reiner asked, “What’s so funny, babe?”
“What’s so funny, babe?” he asked again, because you didn’t seem to hear the first time he asked you. Distracted, you showed a stupid meme on your phone, “Porco sent me this.”
Porco here, Porco there. Reiner was sick of hearing that dumb name.
He had tried to look up for his background, and he hated to find that all that ever came up about him were amicable. His friends knew him, said he was chill, said he was smart as fuck, said he had a cool family, said he turned down a track and field scholarship for law school. Porco Galliard is a cool dude, they all said.
At certain point Reiner had grown to be furious, and the more your text messages became sparse or the more you spent your Saturday nights without him, the more he set his mind to do something about the two of you. He had become so sick of hiding and he wanted the whole world to know that you were his. Especially that guy with a name that sounded like her mother hated giving birth to him.
So came that day. You hadn’t been replying to his texts since morning, and only did so after chains of messages he left.

Pocko. Is that an endearing term you came up with for the jizzhead? Reiner thought, pissed off beyond compare. He paced restlessly in his room, trying to figure out what did Porco have that he didn’t have? Thinking of how his undercut made his head looked way bigger for his neck, just like sperm; and it made Reiner mad angry. “Fuck you, Jizzhead”, he hissed, kicking the pile of dirty laundry on his dorm room.
The cafeteria was bustling busy when you arrived with Porco. The two of you immediately joined the line for lunch and the muffin. The man was busy babbling about yet another stupid thing that he had done back in high school, but your mind was darted on the muffins that were sold off fast. You looked around and almost everyone you disliked were present – mostly Reiner’s jock friends and their girlfriends. The prospect of one day going public with Reiner and having to spare days in your life to socialize with these loud people made you squirm. Not that you were completely against it, you were just… enormously reluctant to do so. Also, what would they say about you? You barely existed for them, evident by how they just greeted Porco with huge affection, yet pretended like you were invisible despite the fact that you were talking and standing close to him.
Your mind was elsewhere, between eyeing the muffin and managing your detest towards the it crowd, you weren’t even listening to the small talk that Porco was having with some of the jocks, until the mention of your name spilled out of Porco’s mouth, “Hey, have you guys known ___ before?”
You blinked with surprise, and they looked at you unenthusiastically, “Ummm, no?” one of them said.
Porco stared at them in disbelief, as if not knowing you was a big sin, “Get to know then! She’s cool, she’s really into—” but even before Porco could finish his words, they averted their attention elsewhere, pulling out their phone like it was the most important thing in the world, and talked amongst themselves. How fitting, because the first thing they talked about as an excuse for ignoring you was to talk about Reiner, “The captain’s been grumpy. Haha. That man. What’s up with him?” You cringed, because you knew there was no weight in talking about Reiner that must be done at that time, that moment. They just wanted a reason not to be roped into talking to you, obviously because you didn’t think you were cool enough or some other shit excuse only them and their bobbleheads understand. So, conveniently throwing out Reiner’s name was an effective way to basically say ‘haha look at us talking about the coolest guy in the campus so you know we’re in this cool clique unlike you’. You read them too well. You couldn’t even be amused anymore.
Porco looked embarrassed, he smiled at you awkwardly and stayed silent, until one of the girls threw their attention back to the man dirty blond undercut, “Anyway, Porco, do you know Reiner?”
“Ah, I haven’t had the chance to.”
The girl frowned rather dramatically, “Oh my god, we all should totally hang out together with Reiner, right? He’s like—super cool.” her question was obviously in exclusion of you. You rolled your eyes and turned away to see new text from Reiner appearing.

You immediately pulled your phone to your chest; you could feel your heart thumping. Is this it? Is this it? The question became menacing in your head, because you were not sure on what Reiner was planning to do. The line to the muffin was still far away, and it would be stupid to run away.

You could hear the girls were still talking about Reiner. Reiner this, Reiner that. You were nowhere to lie that you could feel your chest heat up with annoyance. The way their squeaking voice praised Reiner’s body, Reiner’s personality, Reiner’s wit. For the first time, you knew you were experiencing jealousy, vibrant and up-close.
“You know what? One time, Reiner thought that the way I did my hair was so cute that he wanted—”
Just in time, one of the boys raised his voice, “Oi Reiner!” and in unison the jocks erupted, welcoming his arrival like they were in some goddamn party.
You could see Reiner walking towards the line you were in, his face was hardened and his walk was swift. You immediately turned away to look at the opposite direction, not wanting to see him.
“Yooo Reiner! Where have you been? We’ve missed you dude,” one of them said. You cringed at how they all tried so hard to sound cool, “have you met Porco, by the way? And his friend—”
“—hey, what’s her name again?” one of the girls chimed in, asking Porco instead of asking you directly, as if you were not there. At that point, Reiner was standing not too far behind you, and you pretended like you were too busy with your phone, hoping the floor would engulf you instead.
“Is she like, deaf or something?” the girl whispered to Porco with a jeer, before getting back to Reiner, “So, Rei, I’ve got this party—”
“—yo Capt, do you know that—”
“—have you heard about the news, dude? Like—”
The way all these people tried to suck up to Reiner was so pathetic and incessant, they all chirped like hungry birds all in a matter of couple of seconds. You hated them and you hated the situation.
“—come on, Capt, that would be awesome—”
“—oh my gosh, Rei—”
“—you must try it, Rei—"
“Shut the fuck up,” Reiner said. Rather abruptly. His voice was cold and deep, like he couldn’t give a damn in this world about any of them. Surprised, they all dropped quiet in an instance. You looked over your back at him. Reiner was staring at you, and at you alone, not even at the Jizzhead he had grown to hate so much, “you all talk too fucking much.”
You snorted, suppressing a laughter to escape from your mouth. Clearly, it was too audible, that the girls were now looking at you with complete disdain.
“Babe,” Reiner said, staring at you, while you were still facing the opposite direction, “babe, what are you doing with this Jizzhead here? I can bake you muffins remember? If you want it so much.”
Your surrounding fell deep in silence. Everyone was either confused or surprised. Murmur started to sweep over the crowd, most audible was: ‘Who is Jizzhead?’
You scoffed, finally turning your back, although still closing your mouth trying to prevent the laughter and the embarrassment to display itself.
“What the hell?” one of the girls asked in dismay, obviously she was one of the girls sliding into Reiner’s DM and sending him bikini photos by the pretense of ‘Rei, you should join us for summer holiday!’ when all she wanted to do was to show her tits.
“Shut up,” Reiner said to her, baffling the girl to complete silence, “and stop sending me your beach photos. They’re ugly.”
An uproar of restraint laughter was heard throughout the cafeteria.
“Babe,” Reiner said again, this time extending his arms toward you, gesturing for you to come closer, “now you know why I need you, right? My friends are fucking whack.”
Few laughter was starting to break. Yet Reiner was unfazed.
“Reiner, what—”
“—yo dude, what the hell?
“—who is she?”
“—are they dating?”
“And listen here, you hag,” Reiner now turned his attention to the girl who called you deaf, “she’s got a name. Her name is ___, and she’s my fucking girlfriend.”
Embarrassed yet amused, you finally let out a small chuckle, “Reiner, please you’re humiliating me.”
“Whatever,” he shrugged off. Reiner now turned his attention to Porco, “and listen here you, Jizzhead. You can be nice to her but keep in your fucking mind, she’s mine.”
Without hesitation, Reiner pulled your hand and yanked you closer to him. You stared at him for a second, eyes broadened and heart thumping, “Reiner, what are you gonna do—”
“—shut up.” he said, cupping your face with his gigantic hands, and pulled your face roughly to him, before landing his dry, chapped lips to yours. He had gone sick of pretending, and doing things in secret. So there Reiner Braun was, hungrily, longingly, sloppily devouring your lips with his mouth, so deep, so thirsty of your taste. He finally showed the world who the true owner of his heart was. You.

Hello everyone!
My today’s post is dedicated to my visit to the museum of School number 56 in Moscow, which, as you know, Academician Valery Alekseevich Legasov graduated from in 1951 with a gold medal. Many thanks to the history teacher Kristian Molotov for an exciting tour of the museum and school.

The school was opened in 1927 on the right bank of the Moskva River. At that time the Dorogomilovsky district (then it was called Kievsky) of Moscow was the outskirts and average people lived here, workers from factories that were on the other side of the river. Since there were a lot of people, the Soviet government came up with a question of building a school. It was built in two years and quickly became remarkable place of the district, a beautiful stone building in the style of Soviet constructivism.

There were so many children that the school worked in three shifts; after the first change of children, their parents also came there to study, sitting at the same desks as their children.
On June 21, 1941, the last bells rang, graduation ceremonies in schools were held throughout the country, and the next day war was declared. 23 boys, yesterday's schoolchildren, went with the headmaster to the conscription office. Only 7 of them returned from the war. Headmaster also died in a battle. During the war, the school was turned into a hospital. It opened its doors again in September 1944.

Many Moscow citizens who graduated from school number 56, later have become famous scientists, athletes, writers, and military men.

Big part of the museum's exposition is dedicated to teachers and principals who have worked at the school for many years.

With special warmth Kristian remembered the previous headmaster of the school, Vera Danilovna Kondratenko, who worked in this position for 35 years and did a lot for the school. She received the honorary title of People's Teacher of Russian Federation (from Putin himself), and only 10 people a year from all over Russia that are awarded with such an honor.

When in 1996, President Yeltsin awarded Valery Alekseevich Legasov the title of Hero of Russia, the city administration suggested to Margarita Mikhailovna Legasova to name a park, alley or anything else in his honor, but she said: "No, this should be an educational institution that will bear the name of my husband." In 2001, the school was named after the academician.

The new school building, as we see it now, was built in 2010 and has a truly unique architecture. It has, for example, an interior garden, with a high ceiling and a glass roof. And a very large sports hall.
Next to the museum, a large map of the world hangs on the wall, in the center of which is school No. 56, and the lines and lights symbolize the countries in which the school graduates now live.

The murder of Rhonda Hinson

(Editor’s Note:  The 1980’s was a violent decade for women in Wilkes and surrounding counties.  At least four young women were murdered between 1981and 1987—their cases remain unresolved:  Rhonda Hinson of Burke County — who has relatives in Wilkes County, Angela Hamby of Wilkes, who disappeared in 1982,  Sherry Hart of Ashe County, and Candy Roberson of Wilkes. This series, “The Killing of Rhonda Hinson” is the second in a trilogy of murder cases that will be detailed in The Record over the ensuing weeks and months — cold cases of crimes perpetrated against women over 30-years ago, whose families await justice and closure.)

 Bobby Hinson remembers his daughter’s prediction.
“Rhonda told me that it was going to snow on Christmas Day,” he said. “We were always betting on when it was going to snow, and she told me that it would be on Christmas that year.”
Already there had been some moderate, late December snowfall in the Burke County Foothills; so, there was more than just a slight chance that Christmas, 1981, would be white.
“…And sure enough—as we were walking out of the house to go to church that morning, large white snowflakes started falling,” Bobby recalled, as he gazed into the middle distance.
It was Friday, December 25th.  As dads and moms and children gathered around Christmas trees bedecked with garland and twinkling lights to open treasure troves of colorful gifts, one family of three—undergirded by relatives and friends—quietly buried Rhonda Hinson.
Rhonda Annette Hinson was born 12 days before Christmas in 1962—Thursday, December 13th—the first child and only daughter of Judy and Bobby Hinson. “It was 2 p.m.,” Mother Judy remembered.  Their baby girl was healthy; however, the final days of pregnancy, leading up to the birth, were not without issues.  
“We were living in Great Falls, S.C., at the time—in Chester County.  But before Rhonda was born, my doctor discovered that she was going to be a breech birth with her legs tucked against her little chest.  So, he sent me to the hospital in Rock Hill, in York County, because they had more experience with breech births.”  
Fortuitously, the attending physician succeeded in turning her infant daughter, and Judy was able to give birth, without resorting to a “C-Section” delivery.
“Rhonda did undergo therapy for the first year to make sure her legs would grow in the correct position—the sessions were successful,” recounted Ms. Hinson.  “I once told my daughter about the problem with her legs being tucked against her chest. I don’t think that she ever forgot that story, which could account for her excelling in sports so she could use those legs. I mean, she played tennis, basketball, ran track, danced, twirled baton, and always marched in Charlotte’s Thanksgiving Carousel Parade.”
Judy freely admitted that she was a typical, doting first-time mother who held her newborn all the time.  “I didn’t realize that it was OK to lay her down and to let her cry a little.  So, I kept her wrapped you and held her all day long.”
Once while cuddling her neonate, the young mother drifted off to sleep.  “I was worn out and fell asleep.  And when I woke up, I was in a panic—Rhonda was not in my arms.  I looked down at my feet; there she lay--sleeping away on the floor.  She must have rolled off my lap onto the floor, but was so wrapped up that the tumble didn’t hurt her.”
When their daughter was 3-months old, the Hinsons decided to move northward to North Carolina where Judy’s brother was living.  Bobby took a job at Waldensian Bakeries in the hamlet of Valdese—one that he would hold for the duration of his working-life.  The young family of three moved into a gray block house located on a backstreet, adjacent to both the elementary and high schools, in the tiny town of Drexel, about three miles away from the bakery at which Mr. Hinson was employed.  
Eventually, they moved into Valdese proper and welcomed an addition to the family.  Robert Hinson Jr., “Robbie,” was born on Saturday, Jan. 27, 1968 at Valdese General Hospital—the Hinsons’ last child and only son.  Across time, a close bond developed between a baby brother and his older sister.
When Rhonda was 6 years old, she was enrolled in Valdese Elementary School; the Hinsons lived nearby.  Initially, the school experience did not seem to agree with the budding academician.
“About everyday at lunchtime, I would see Rhonda walking from the school toward the house.  And every time, she came in complaining of a ‘terrible headache,’” Judy laughingly recalled.  “The school day was much too long for her, I guess; she could only tolerate about a half-day.”
Circa 1972, the Hinson Family moved a few miles east of Valdese toward the village of Rutherford College.  “We lived in a trailer park there for a while—but not for very long.” Judy recounted. An incident occurred that left an indelible impact upon their 13-year-old daughter and could conceivably account for her lifelong obsession with safety.
“Bobby had to be at work at 2 o’clock in the morning. Not long after he left, we were in bed when I heard someone yelling and beating on the door.  I got Rhonda and Robbie out of their beds and brought them into my bedroom just before someone knocked the door open and walked inside. We went out the back door to a neighbor’s house and called the police.”
When law enforcement arrived, they discovered a drunken intruder who was visiting from out-of-town and thought that he was breaking into the trailer at which he was staying.  Though no harm came to the mother and her children, neither Rhonda nor Robbie wanted to return to the trailer.  
“They were frightened and didn’t feel at all safe anymore,” Ms. Hinson averred.  “So, we had to locate another place to live—and fast….We took about the first place that we could find available at the time—a house on Hillcrest  Street. which we live in now.”  
Even before she started school, Rhonda Hinson demonstrated a penchant for being in the limelight.  When she was 5 years of age, she was among the cast of the 1968 inaugural production of the Burke County outdoor drama, From This Day Forward—a history play, written by Fred Cranford, chronicling the story of the arrival of the Waldensians who settled in the Valdese area.
(Ironically, this writer was among the original cast of that production staged in August, 1968.  I recall that a number of children of sundry ages were involved in the play and rehearsed dance sequences regularly in the Valdese High School gymnasium, adjacent to the outdoor stage.  Little did I realize at the time that among the children, with whom I frequently interacted, was 5-year-old Rhonda Hinson.)
“She was in the outdoor play for three-years. Her daddy went with her to every rehearsal and every performance.  And throughout elementary school she also danced and twirled baton—she was always doing something.  Rhonda loved being in the limelight,” her mother recollected.
While attending Valdese Junior High School, Rhonda was a solid, consistent student who continued to excel in extra-curricular activities, among which were basketball and the junior varsity band.  She played the clarinet and continued to do so when she matriculated at East Burke High  School in 1978.  
Ask anyone who knew her and the story is the same—everyone liked Rhonda Hinson.
“Rhonda was well-liked by everyone,” remembered Sarah McBrayer, who lived across the street from the Hinsons and attended East Burke High  School with their daughter.  “She made friends easily; she didn’t carry grudges; she smiled and laughed and was always in an upbeat mood.”  
“There was absolutely no way that she had any enemies--anywhere,” said her closest lifelong friend, Jill Turner-Mull.  “We moved here from South Carolina in 1973—I was in the fourth grade and Rhonda Hinson was my best friend even back then—in fact we became instant best friends, and she loved for me to brush her hair…The two of us might as well been sisters.”
Jill’s mother, Revonda Turner agreed, “They were together all the time.  Rhonda spent a lot of time at our house just as Jill spent time at the Hinsons’.”  
Jackie Griffin Berry, who shared homeroom and several classes with Rhonda, remarked, “…she was quiet…had lots of friends, and liked to play sports.”
In fact, she excelled in sports, earning accolades in basketball, track, tennis—even varsity band.  Jill Turner-Mull recalled her best friend’s sports prowess.  “While I cheered all three years in Junior High School—grades seven through nine—Rhonda played basketball.  However, during our sophomore year in High School, we did run track together. Though Rhonda was noted for her [general] athletic ability, tennis was her passion.”
Like most teenage girls, Rhonda dated during her formative high school years.  “She dated a couple guys, one of whom was Don Gilbert,” Mother Judy recalled.  He was such a nice young man; I liked him a lot. I remember being angry with Rhonda when she stopped dating him.”
Jill Turner-Mull recalled Gilbert as well. “Yes, Don was a very nice guy, and he really liked Rhonda.  But I don’t remember her dating anyone steady.”
But that was about to change.  
During her junior year, a quiet, rather studious young athlete named Greg McDowell caught Rhonda’s eye, and a romantic relationship began to develop between them.
Rhonda Hinson had slightly longer than 24-months to live.

4. Politics and governance,
5. Arts, sports and entertainment,
6. Family,
7. Financial/Business world (Commerce, business and finances),
8. Health,
9. Food and Agriculture, and
10. Science and technology.
These ten kingdoms control and influence the systems of the world and the people thereof.
Some have been called to be religious leaders. Their messages will carry fire and command results. Their presence will compel souls to be saved. Their ministries will bring light to this dark world...
Some have been called to be teachers, lecturers, professors, instructors, academicians etc. They will help students and youths to discover their purpose and potential. They will break the yokes of failure and laziness in the lives of students. They will re-introduce Christ to schools and command mighty results in the educational sector. They will heal the sick and even raise the dead by their teachings. They are not ordinary teachers but anointed by God to make a difference and build youths who will be forces to reckon with in the society. Their presence will compel demons to flee...

Substance Abuse in Schools: A Proposed Action Plan

Introduction
The prevalence of substance abuse in Pakistani educational institutions is not any different from the rest of the world. Various studies have shown figures ranging from 10-50% of students experimenting intermittently or regularly using drugs. The most disturbing fact is that majority of drug addicts are between 16-24 years of age which is the mainstay of our population. According to a survey, nearly 50% of students (high school and college), in big cities and leading private schools are falling victim to drugs. A data from survey conducted in the schools and universities of Lahore reports that ''about 57% of the students are using at least one drug''. Admittedly, these numbers may be less in public schools due to tighter controls, limited exposure, and lesser opportunities, both at home and schools. The more commonly used drugs by school and college students include cigarettes for abuse of nicotine, cannabis, heroin, tranquillizers, psychostimulants, and memory and performance enhancing drugs in the form of tablets, sniffing powders, and liquids.

While there are several models of school-based prevention programmes available from the West, there is limited data available on tangible well-documented plans that have shown promise in Pakistan. The advantages of a more supportive home environment, preservation of family bonds, trust in parents, respect for teachers in schools, and a fairly effective discipline in public schools provide an opportunity for a home-grown solution that draws upon these strengths.
While organizing this preventive plan, the team was aware of the strong “Don’ts” that have consistently shown failure. These included one-off lectures by experts on drug abuse and the hazardous consequences of drugs, didactic or one-way sermons by religious and motivational speakers, extolling non-use, seeking commitment for “I will never use drugs again” or seminars on catchy titles like ‘Say no to drugs’. Such programmes are known around the world to be failures, and in some cases, serving as initiators of substance abuse on account of curiosity, anxiety, or the guilt so generated. Therefore, it was decided not to follow this trodden path.
This article highlights an alternative plan of action that brings together parents, students, and the school staff to develop and implement through students, aptly supported by all stakeholders. Essentially built around and run by students themselves, the plan drew upon some newly conceived creative ideas to deal with reduction and prevention of drug abuse in a school setting. Let me acknowledge the efforts of designated faculty members and also compliment the support rendered by Brigadier (R) Dr. Mowadat Rana and Miss Hira Binte Asim for the entire exercise and its documentation.
Methodology
The setting of the plan was a higher secondary school/college in a busy metropolis in Northern Punjab. The school classes include from middle to higher senior secondary; with students converging from higher middle to lower middle social classes. The institution takes pride in its merit-based induction, moderate fee structure, excellent educational results, higher sports standing and overall grooming of students.
The concept and the challenges of running “prevention of substance abuse plan” in the school was thoroughly discussed with academicians, mental health professionals, and administrators; also, various international and regional models were studied. A consensus was however reached that the plan had to be devised by the school’s students, teachers and parents; and had to be home-grown. It was decided that the senior administration would provide logistics and organise meetings for teachers, parents, and students’ representatives all under one roof. After a brief introduction to the issue by the administration and a mental health professional, the three groups would assemble for small group discussions to devise a plan. All recommendations thus developed would be presented in a plenary session and a comprehensive action plan to be developed. The proposed outcome was a blueprint of an action plan to prevent substance abuse in the school. It was agreed that the plan would be implemented over three months, followed by an external review of the outcomes to draw relevant lessons. The continuity and sustainability of the plan would depend upon the findings of the review and analysis. The group discussions addressed the following areas:
▪ Common causes of substance abuse in the school.
▪ Factors that predispose, aggravate and/or precipitate substance abuse amongst students.
▪ List of strategies to address the causes and factors identified above.
Findings
Findings and salient points drawn from small group discussions were as follows:
▪ Common causes of substance abuse:
• Drugs as a means to handle/escape from challenges, hardships and realities of life in general.
• Poor family bonding between parents and students.
• Lack of effective and empathic inter-personal communication.
• Anxiety, depression and high degree of stress at home.
• Peer pressure imposed by drug abusers within the school or in social settings outside the school.
• Complexes and false feelings of inferiority/superiority.
• Ever-increasing frustrations generated by failures or coming up to the expectations of teachers and or parents to score high grades.
• ‘Get noticed syndrome’. An urge to ‘look cool’, ‘different’ and ‘defiant’.
• Curiosity to know how it feels to be ‘high’ on drugs.
• As an expression of bravery i.e., to do it as an adventure.
• Recreational use to relax and enjoy, relieve stress and feel happy.
▪ Predisposing, aggravating, precipitating factors include:
• Availability/easy access to funds (exorbitant pocket money).
• Easy access to drugs.
• Easy availability of tranquillizers with and without medical prescriptions.
• Smoking, drugs, substance abuse eulogized in movies and social media.
• Easy availability in neighbourhoods, and drug dens spread out in the city.
• Poverty of funds leading to indulgence in substance abuse and trafficking.
• Affluence of money and easy access to unaccounted for funds.
• Marginalisation in family matters.
• Single parent upbringing/broken family.
• Lack of authority figure in life.
• Dependency traits in personality; an urge to rely on others in all matters.
• Non-participation in sports, athletics, extracurricular activities.
• Social phobias and shyness.
• Staying in a hostel/away from family, little to no accountability.
Recommendations
The following steps are recommended as part of the ‘action plan’ to prevent substance abuse:
• Awareness. Use of social media and all available aids to seek information and guidance from mental health experts. This also includes teachers training through various organizations which conduct such awareness programs (like Universal Prevention Curriculum), with a view to promote learning and contribution towards drug prevention/interventions. Similarly, a school level “Strengthening Family Program” (SFP) should also be organised, involving teachers, students and their parents.
• Motivation. Mobilisation of external and internal motivation to refrain from substance abuse; seeing it as a challenge to national and self-pride, expectations of society, parents and significant others in life. Showing larger canvas of life, societal and family issues proves of more value than merely highlighting health issues.
• Engagement. Planned engagement with students who are predisposed or vulnerable in the light of the factors listed above. This should be done through selected volunteer students/peers; without breaching confidentiality in a non-threatening fashion, offering support, help and appropriate referral to experts.
• Prevention. The causes, sources and symptoms need to be kept in sharp focus for prevention. Research indicates that smoking is the first step to substance use, thus, it needs to be discouraged. Running student-based campaigns to prevent smoking, checking and discouraging smoking by nominated teachers and administrative staff are the suggested measures. Use of mild substances leads the youth to try hard/serious drugs, which may lead to addiction, hence needs to be prevented and curbed at early stages.
• Identification. Counselling and training of volunteer students in early tell-tale signs of substance abuse; in a bid to ensure that they pick up vulnerable and indulged comrades at an early stage. Behavioural and physical symptoms should be sensitively noticed. “Early detection” helps in early intervention and stopping multiplication. Identified cases could be selectively considered for referral to experts or mobilization of support at home and school. This has to be done most discretely, preserving sanctity of the family and ensuring confidentiality, with diligence in place.
• Counselling. Few selected faculty members are trained by experts to help the school team as core members. They do “on-campus counselling”, rather than immediate referral of potential/detected cases to psychologists and psychiatrists. This is to ensure that a student is not stigmatized or made to feel a scapegoat.
• Deterrence. To put in place a system of deterrence, random laboratory tests for screening of drugs has to be made public by senior management. Such announcement should be coupled with seriousness of consequences, including health, career and social aspects. At least three months’ warning time be given for those who could quit under the fear of tests/deterrence. Few would leave the habit at this stage and potential cases may defer their inclination.
• Intervention. The screening tests for substance abuse, though a social taboo, will have to be resorted, to show resolve and send a message of commitment and seriousness. Students’ furtive pulse report reveals that any plan would not be fruitful unless supported by deterrence and intervention. It has to be selectively and randomly done (from secondary and higher secondary classes), including those who appear to harbour vulnerability factors identified above (say total of 50-100 students, depending on the administrative/handling capacity).
• Coordination. This is important with all stakeholders, especially for planning intervention and screening tests. The lab tests have to be undertaken in an organized and planned fashion, ensuring confidentiality, element of surprise, least drama, maximal professionalism; with due support of lab technicians and experts; based on standards set for sampling of sportsmen. Minor details need to be coordinated before the conduct of test. Few suggested tips are:
√ Prior coordination with related departments and selected faculty members.
√ Ensuring maximum attendance through selection of appropriate day (could be an exam day).
√ Making necessary administrative arrangements pre-hand, including testing kits, surveillance system etc.
√ 50 selected students (preferably boys) from 100 shortlisted ones could be tested as first step (surprise test). Higher the number of samples, higher would be the administrative and coordination requirements.
√ Blood sampling is expensive and has other related issues, hence urine sampling is advised.
√ Selected students should be sent to toilets one by one, for ease of correct sampling and to avoid mixing up.
√ Deter fleeing away of nominated students. There will be a tendency of sneaking away when he/she learns about the test. Few might refuse to undergo the test; both categories may be marked as confirmed cases.
Cases found to relapse or test positive twice should be considered for stern action, and involvement of their families.
• Confidentiality. The positive lab tests should be kept secret and shared with the concerned student only (by the nominated member of the staff). They could be placed on ‘probation’ for three months (to quit) and given an option to share the result with his family or seek help on his own (through school resources and referral system, local counselling facilities, peer support etc). Reporting to parents at this stage is not advisable without the concurrence of the student, as this is the biggest incentive/threat for him/her. Talking to such students confidentially revealed that the worst threat they fear is public embarrassment, through their friends and family members. Most of them promised to quit provided their secret is kept from parents. The concept of punishment or termination should also be abandoned at this stage and kept as a deterrent. This approach was deliberately discussed with all stakeholders and considered of maximum utility, it also ensured trust in the school plan.
• Services for the Vulnerable/Students Testing Positive. Formal services have to be established to provide “peer support” by volunteer students in each class, and counselling support through selected staff members, trained in psychosocial care. Mental health experts have to be engaged for students with underlying psychopathologies and in situations demanding clinical assessment and interventions.
• Evaluation. It is important to evaluate data, analysing how different steps have worked, how many students gave up at which stage etc. Testing of only “vulnerable students” in a disciplinary tight institution revealed 10% affected strength and 5% into addiction. A confidential probe also revealed that “nearly 10%” quitted before the stage of being tested owing to awareness, motivation, engagement and deterrence.
• Follow-up: The student volunteers, staff members, and those engaged in the implementation of the preventive programme have to ensure long-term follow-up, screening and retests. Particular emphasis on ensuring screening and putting on radar the “new entrants”, especially in class 9 and first year has to be ensured for sustainable results. Retests have to be conducted intermittently, for deterrence and resolve, keeping lessons and experience of first test in mind. Stern/punitive actions would be required on cases of recurrence, including those which were avoided on the first test.
Lessons
• School administration needs to show its commitment to prevention and intervention as regards the menace of substance abuse.
• Personal involvement of senior management and emotional attachment of faculty members reduces the chances of substance abuse.
• If teachers make their right place, they start to influence the personality of students; coupled with “self-example” and “personal attention” they can do the most at the “prevention” stage.
• The problem of substance abuse can be best handled using a horizontal approach (parents, teachers, students operating as equal stakeholders), rather than a vertical approach (top-down, where it’s a parental or a school agenda). An efficient use of school’s own resources in the form of students and staff members in handling the vulnerable students can be far more acceptable than referral to mental health specialists or reporting these cases to parents.
• An effective, consistent and ongoing communication between parents, students and the school improve the acceptability, impact and influence, thereby contributing towards success of the plan. The firm and resolute commitment of top leadership and support of policymakers towards the plan further enhances the chances of success.
• Adolescents in a school setting may not be treated as naïve children; their participation in planning, decision-making and implementation as adults and partners yields much better results. At another level, this approach helps in sublimating, and channelizing their energies; also, augmentation of their adolescents through engagement, instead of distancing from them. This is why forming of a horizontal, instead of a vertical relationship, with students (by the school administrators, teachers and parents) is of more value.
• When trained and trusted, students can work as efficient, trustworthy volunteers to help their own peers struggling with substance abuse.
• Constructive use of social media enhances interest, participation and internal motivation of students, to use it to their advantage in the propagation of the message. The existing ambivalence, hesitance and even resistance in the use of social media in school setting by staff, parents, and teachers appears to be unfounded. This can open new vistas in the utility of social media, laptops and smartphones in the mainstream learning processes, including the learning of new skills and attitudes. This approach can reduce stress as well as the distance between the teacher and the taught, and in the long run play a crucial role in the prevention of substance abuse. This is likely to reduce the stress at school, resulting from learning and poor student-teacher relationships.
• The impact of teachers as role models, guides, and mentors appears to be greatly enhanced when they work in a horizontal relationship with the students. The suggested action plan can form a ‘holy triad’ between the students, teachers and parents. This model would generate a milieu of empathy, compassion and a deeper understanding of the role of teachers, amongst the parents and students. The triad model worked well in substance abuse prevention and therefore has the potential for use in pursuits in other realms of learning in school settings.
Conclusion
Youth is the future of our country. It has to be protected against possible ills, taking steps more than “creating awareness” and “showing concern”. Educational institutions happen to be an easy target for spoiling the youth, but the solution lies in collective effort by teachers, parents, social community and law enforcement agencies, that too with continuity and resilience. Concerted efforts can make one school/college a “drug free institution”, then a city, and a society.

Top 10 football academies in Africa: WAFA makes the cut
No one can deny the high-ranking level that African football has reached in the last two decades. African players practicing in Europe, as well as  inside the African continent, have shown great physical, technical, and tactical abilities. This noticeable progress is partially due to the important role that football academies and centers play in the training of today’s African football talents.
In Africa, several training centers and academies are set up each year; even famous clubs from around the world come to the continent to launch their schools and look for new talents. Current training centers in Africa have no reasons to envy those of the Europeans. This is thanks to Jean-Marc Guillou, in particular, who has established this fashion in Africa.  Guillou has trained many talents like Gervinho and Salomon Kalou.
There are now well-equipped academies and football centers in all parts of the African continent working hard to prepare Africa’s future stars.
Kadji Sport Academy – Cameroon
Kadji Sport Academy can be used as an example of how there are successful training centers not only in Africa, but throughout the world. This is because of the number of worldwide players who were trained in the academy. The academy is a sports training and fitness center with a Cameroon football club. It is based in the western suburbs of Douala, and founded by Joseph Kadji Defosso. In addition, they are currently playing in the second division of the Cameroonian championship.
The Kadji Sport Academy has a complex on nearly 40 hectares. It works with a philosophy that although sport remains a game, it has nonetheless become a profession that requires certain knowledge and know-how skills; for this, training is necessary. These teachings should begin very early, as it is now not extraordinary to see champions who are 18 years of age. To train these future champions, the centre has equipped itself with the best accommodations, along with talented coaches that instill in them some fundamental values: the sense of the rigor, the love of excelling while performing, personal ethics, and the pleasure of playing. The centre gives equal importance to the both studies and sports.
Kadji has been able to produce quality players who have ended up in world-class clubs, including Samuel Eto’o, Stéphane Mbia, Benjamin Moukandjo, Aurélien Chedjou, and Idriss Carlos Kameni. The centre also has a partnership with a variety of European clubs such as Atletico de Madrid, FC Sevilla, OGS Nice and more.
Mimos Sifcom Academy – Ivory Coast
Created  by Roger Ouégnin and Jean-Marc Guillou in 1993, the training center of Asec Mimosas has established itself as a model through combining beautiful performances  and positive results.
Champions of Africa with Asec in 1999, the Academicians, now constitute the backbone of the Elephants of Ivory Coast.
Although initially supported by AS Monaco (the club of the principality granted an annual subsidy of 50 million CFA from 1994 to 1996), the Mimos Sifcom academy was taken over by the Asec of Abidjan with private shareholders .
The Academicians are more and more numerous to take the path of Europe. Aruna, a young prodigy of Ivorian football, has been named “best hope” of the Belgian first division championship. This academy remains one of the most popular football schools in Africa since it has produced a number of successful African footballers such as Didier Zokora, Emmanuel Eboué, Gervinho, Salomon Kalou, Didier Ya Konan, Kolo Toure, and FC Barcelona’s legendary player, Yaya Toure.
Diambars FC – Senegal
After reaching retirement, Jean-Marc Adjovi-Boco, former Benin’s defender, launched his dream project with Senegalese Bernard Lama and entrepreneur Saer Seck to take part in the development of football in Senegal, as well as in the whole of Africa. This project was given the name of Diambars, a Wolof term meaning “warriors”. The first stone was laid in Saly, which is just south of Dakar, in 2003 with Lama, Seck, and French footballer Patrick Vieira. Diambars became a professional club in 2008 and joined the second division. A dozen players that play in the European championships were trained the academy, and in mid-August 2010, the “warriors” were able to celebrate their first national title.
Above all, Diambars is a school of football with a normal school curriculum. Academic success and athletic achievement are on an equal footing in the academy.  The Diambars center has a team known as the “little Barcelona of Senegal”. After training talented Senegalese athletes and developing their skills into those of professional players, the center sells them to European clubs.
Kwara Football Academy – Kenya
Kwara Football Academy was set up in 2005 as an initiative of the Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to target skill development and professional training. The academy has over seven experienced coaches who were all international football players.
With approximately 100 students, the school aims at training youths between the ages of 13 and 21 to make their own professional careers either inside or outside Nigeria. With three categories (13-14, 15-17, and 17-19), the academy provides  students with the opportunity to receive high-level professional training that meets international standards, while also providing a formal education.
Players of Kwara Academy have participated in a variety of international competitions inside and outside the African continent. It has also produced a great number of footballers – some of them are currently playing in different Nigerian teams, as well as in different categories of the national team. When the Nigerian Under-17 team won the silver medal at the U-17 World Cup 2009, three students from the academy were part of the great achievement.
Medas Football Academy – Nigeria
Midas Football Academy was created  in 2006 in order to discover young football talents in Nigeria. The idea behind the birth of the academy was the fact that Nigeria is full of talented children who just need orientation and professional training to further develop their skills. As a result, the Medas Football Academy helps these children  create their own career and be able to  play at an international level.
The academy has a strong network of international football clubs and organizations that help its graduates meet a variety of football coaches and agents from all over the world.
Katumbi Football Academy – Democratic Republic of the Congo
The construction of a training center has always been part of the long-term strategy of Congolese TP Mazembe, one of the strongest  teams in Africa. TPM is the only Congolese club with such a developed training center for the service of the Congolese  gifted youth. It provides quality training conditions with rich programs that cover all age categories. The academy prepares players to join either the first team of Mazembe, or other clubs inside and outside of the country.
Katumbi Academy is now reaping the fruits of its work through the emergence of talented players who have shown complete readiness to play at the professional level. Arsène Zola and Glody Likonza are some of the best examples of Katumbi’s graduates, as they were able to show off their great talents during the 8th  edition of the Francophonie games organized in Abidjan in July 2017.
Mohammed VI Academy – Morocco
Created in 2008, the Mohammed VI Football Academy is a Moroccan football training center that was inaugurated in 2009 by King Mohammed VI.
Following the observation that professional football in Morocco lacked breadth and influence, King Mohammed VI proposed the creation of a center that serves as a national model of training in terms of law, supervision, financing, and infrastructure.
In May 2008, King Mohammed VI announced the construction of the Mohammed VI Football Academy – a project whose construction required an investment of 140 million Dirhams (13 million euros). One year later, 45 children aged 12 to 13 formed the first class of the academy.
The goal of this academy is to train students in the “profession” of football, and to produce players of international quality. It also aims at detecting the best players from different social categories, which is done through a network of permanent detectors present in each region of the country.
The Mohammed VI Football Academy offers a football school for 6-12 year olds. It is a school of 800 students, with the interests of offering quality football education and identifying young talents.
West African Football Academy – Ghana
West African Football Academy, which is the largest football academy in Ghana, was founded by Feyenoord Club from Rotterdam. It is a also a Ghanaian sporting club playing in the Ghana Premier League.
The story began when Feyenoord’s president, Jorien van den Herik, was given permission to set up Feyenoord’s own football academy in the region of  Fetteh –  close to the capital Accra. The academy’s main mission is to train young, talented African footballers in improving their football skills. It also provides them with formal education that is officially funded by the Dutch club.
Among so many players that have graduated from this academy, Mohammed Abubakari  remains the first player to grow up in the academy and move on to play for Feyenoord.
Ligi Ndogo Academy – Kenya
Established in 2002, the Ligi Ndogo Academy is the most famous football school in Kenya. Being the main school of the Ligi Ndogo Sports Club, it trains and prepares Kenyan talents to play for the senior team or start a football career elsewhere.
The academy aims at providing a suitable environment for young players to develop their skills using a well-developed learning curriculum.  Included in the academy are teams that take part in various national and international tournaments, and these teams are as listed: Toms (4-6 years), Juniors (7-9 years), Lower Mids (10-12), Upper Mids (13-14 years), and Under-19 years. Here students are taught about soccer skills, discipline, team spirit, and leadership. It is also important to mention that the senior team was formed in 2005.
Some famous players who were  trained in the academy include Swedish international  John Guidetti, and Kenyan international Ayub Masika.
PEPSI Football Academy – Nigeria
The Pepsi Football Academy is a football center based out of Agege Stadium in Lagos. The idea was launched by Kashimawo Laloko, and it received the official  support of the Pepsi company in 1994.  It has since been called the Pepsi Football Academy.
The Pepsi Football Academy has developed its infrastructure and training programs to be one of the biggest academies in the whole African continent.  The academy has been able to produce quality players such as John Mikel Obi, Osaze Odemwingie, Echiabhi Okodugha, Joseph Akpala, and many others who have shined in both local and European clubs.
The academy provides talented youths with the opportunity to develop their football careers; because of the great number of applications looking to join the center, the enrollment is highly competitive.

GREGORY DEANE The rehearsals of the cast of “The Wiz”, a production of Broadway Over Queen’s, has so impressed Shawn Turnquest, vice principal, head of Queen’s College (QC) High School, to the point that she promises patrons will be amazed by the cast, their performance and the production in general ahead of the final show and what she terms a must-see performance. “This year, the music…the singers, the cast, rivals any cast on Broadway,” said Turnquest ahead of the production. “Their voices are amazing. Charzia (Curtis, who plays Dorothy) is worth coming to see. You don’t have to go to New York to get a taste of Broadway, it’s Broadway at QC,” said Turnquest. She sings the praises of the vocal ability of Curtis and says her performance will rival that of well-known singers that have had the role in the past. This trip down the yellow brick road is the 1978 adaptation of the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” – an upbeat retelling of Dorothy’s journey to find her way home from the magical city of Oz. When Harlem schoolteacher Dorothy tries to save her dog from a storm, she’s miraculously whisked away to an urban fantasy land called Oz. After accidentally killing the Wicked Witch of the East upon her arrival, Dorothy is told about The Wiz, a wizard who can help her get back to Manhattan. As Dorothy goes in search of the Wiz, she’s joined by the Scarecrow (played by Jordan Gibson), the Tin Man (played by Kaden Jones) and the Cowardly Lion (played by Joshua Ferguson). It’s a storyline that speaks to self-discovery, believing in oneself and courage. Curtis, Gibson, Jones and Ferguson are just four people in a cast of approximately 140 as the production expanded this year to include the primary school. The show will be accompanied by a 20-piece live band and soulful pit singers, under the direction of Karel Coleby. Gregory Deane selected “The Wiz” for the stage this year because of the popularity of the musical, and the fact that he had identified Curtis and Ferguson two years out for the roles of Dorothy and Lion. “Charzia (Dorothy) was a firecracker in grade eight when we did Grease and was out-acting everyone on stage; she has a beautiful singing voice and personality. Joshua has been a part of QC’s band when we put them in the Music Project. He’s a talented singer, affable young man and the perfect Lion. I saw those characters in Charzia and Joshua, and just had to find my Tin Man and Scarecrow and built it around them (Charzia and Joshua) in mind.” Curtis and Ferguson have been researching their roles since they were tapped by Deane, who encouraged them to go onto YouTube to study and learn about the characters they would play. He held auditions the third week in September for the rest of the cast; full rehearsals started in October. He said audiences can expect to see his touch in some of his jokes and hints of Bahamian flavor in the costuming and definitely in terms of set design. “I had this vision of what ‘The Wiz’ should be if I got the chance to direct.” He is taking advantage of it. “A beautifully-imagined set is already in construction atop the school’s center stage. All involved are working tirelessly to make this an unforgettable experience.” He wants the students and audience to take to heart the message of “The Wiz”, which he said is about being brave and having courage. “I want them to remember that having courage in themselves and the fact that they can do anything, even when they’re down and out. People may think they’re brave-less, but find the courage to step up to the plate and do something, not just for themselves, but for others. It’s about being brave, finding their own purpose and finding their own courage.” “The Wiz” will take to the stage at the Geoffrey Brown Auditorium at Queen’s College from March 26 to 28, with nightly shows at 7:30 p.m. and a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Deane said the Broadway Over Queen’s production is an opportunity for the audience to witness musical theater at its finest at home from a talented cast of singers, dancers and actors. “I want to encourage the theater-loving audience and those who’ve never experienced theater on this scale to come to see this because this is a big production in terms of the money being spent and production value, with lights, sound, set and costuming,” he said. With this production, Deane himself will be easing on down the road, and the three-day event will be extra memorable for him as it is expected to be his final time producing and directing Broadway Over Queen’s. “To everything there is a season,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, especially at the level Mrs. [Shawn] Turnquest and myself like to put them on. It is a tremendous amount of work and my body is getting older, so I need to start to step back.” Stepping back, he said, would allow for a younger person to step up to the plate. But even as he steps away, he said the feeling is “bittersweet” as in the middle of preparations for a show, he said, his creative juices are flowing and he lives for the adrenaline rush, which he will miss along with dashing around and micromanaging, which he identifies as a fault as he likes to ensure that i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. But at the same time, he said, he’s usually totally exhausted. While Deane looks to step aside after his sixth consecutive production, Turnquest said Broadway Over Queen’s will continue. She said the institution has people in the pipeline who they feel will continue the program, as at QC , the performing arts is an important pillar of education that they offer to their students. “It’s important we continue to offer avenues for students interested in the performing arts,” said Turnquest. “The performing arts certainly speak to some students but not everyone is a performer. Not everyone is an academician or athlete, and some are interested in the performing arts and enjoy a role in a play or enjoy being a part of the crew, [while] others enjoy simply attending, so to be a school that offers something for every child is important. “Everyone has come to accept QC to excel academically and we have grown to become an athletic force as well, but for many decades, since I was a student here, even in grade seven, I was a part of the cast of ‘Noah’s Flood’ – QC has had a tradition of excellence to the performing arts.” She recalled the ‘70s when productions like “Oklahoma!”, “Oliver!” and Fiddler on the Roof” were presented, and continued in recent years with Broadway Over Queen’s productions under Deane’s direction of “Guys and Dolls” in 2014, “Grease” in 2016 and “West Side Story” in 2018; and two revue shows – “Broadway Over Queen’s 1” and “Broadway Over Queen’s Act II” in 2012. Turnquest described the production of “The Wiz” and all productions they’ve brought to the stage over the years as “massively rewarding” and an “amazing event that’s hard to even quantify in value”. “It lifts the cultural quotient of the entire nation. It enriches the cultural landscape of our country. QC is happy to be a part of enriching the cultural environment nationally and salute Mr. Deane who is happy to have played a role as well,” she said. This year Broadway Over Queen’s showcases “The Wiz” as the school celebrates its 130th anniversary. The production is one in a series of celebratory events. As Deane directs his swan song production, Turnquest said she understands his desire to step aside. “Mr. Deane has been doing this for many years and it’s a large time commitment and takes a toll on his energy. He almost takes a whole year to prepare for it, and he is thinking that this will be his last one.” She believes it’s important for people who have attended shows in the past directed by Deane to show their appreciation to what he has offered in the performing arts, not only at QC but in The Bahamas. “The shows he’s produced here [at QC] rival shows produced anywhere in the world. This year, the music…the singers…the cast, rivals any on Broadway, and their voices are amazing. Charzia is worth coming to see, especially as this is his swan song and he’s going out with a bang. You don’t have to go to New York to get a taste of Broadway, it’s Broadway at QC,” said Turnquest. Run time for “The Wiz” is approximately two hours 30 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission. Student tickets are $15 and adult tickets are priced at $20. MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) is studying the possibility of extending the prescribed coronavirus disease (Covid-19) quarantine period following reports that incubation could be much longer than the presumed 14 days.
Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire made this remark after Chinese authorities confirmed that a 70-year-old man in China’s Hubei Province was infected with Covid-19 but did not show symptoms until 27 days later.
“All of these plans and interventions are evolving, once we see and assess that we would need to extend our quarantine period and then we may be doing that because of these factors,” Vergeire said in a Laging Handa press briefing in Malacañang on Monday.
Vergeire acknowledged that incubation period varies from person to person, but the 0 to 14 day-quarantine period “is still valid as of this time.”
“We get our guide and direction or recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control of the United States… still at this point, [they] have their working incubation period at 0 to 14 days,” she said.
She said the DOH could revise its guidelines based on experiences on the ground such as longer incubation period.
“We are not saying that for now it’s really 14 days. We are going to be assessing them every day, regularly so that we will know on how we can deal with the situation,” she said.
As of February 22, all Filipino repatriates from Wuhan previously underwent the prescribed 14-day quarantine at the Athlete’s Village were released after testing negative for Covid-19.
Vergeire said that despite having a clean bill of health, these repatriates will still be monitored for one month.
“They were advised that our regional offices through our local governments would be still monitoring them for one month. Anybody who exhibits signs and symptoms can always call the hotline and also we have their numbers, we would be texting and calling them for follow up,” she said.
Currently, 59 out of 538 Filipinos aboard M/V Diamond Princess in Yokohama, Japan have tested positive for Covid-19 while two have recovered.
An estimated 400-plus Filipinos aboard the ship will be repatriated as soon as they comply with the established quarantine protocols of Japan.
Vergeire said the Filipinos from Japan will be required to undergo another 14-day quarantine period when they arrive home.
“It was part of the decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force (on Emerging Infectious Diseases) to have another 14-day quarantine period here in the Philippines because of that consideration where we have assumed that the exposure of these individuals are sliding and not at the same day or at the same time,” she said.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said the Japanese government has ensured that any affected Filipino is provided proper medical treatment and care in their hospitals and health facilities.
He said the Philippine government is working closely with Japanese health and foreign ministry officials to complete the quarantine protocols and repatriate Filipino crew members and passengers as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Nograles thanked the Civil Service Commission for clarifying that the absence of public sector officials and employees during the 14-day “self-quarantine” including those who were diagnosed with Covid-19, will not be deducted from earned leave credits.
He also appealed to the private sector to consider extending the same benefit to their employees.
SoKor situation
Following the sharp rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in South Korea, Nograles said the task force is set to discuss the imposition of a possible travel restriction to the East Asian country.
“Sa ngayon, wala pang desisyon. Pag-uusapan ito sa task force (At present, there is no decision yet to impose travel restriction. This will be discussed by the task force). I-a-assess natin yung (We will assess the) situation and based on existing protocols natin pati (and the) recommendation from the WHO, ‘yun po yung magiging basis natin (that will be our basis) for making a decision if ever,” he said.
Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez assured that the embassy in Seoul has also released safety advisories for Filipino workers in South Korea to follow to prevent the spread of Covid-19 such as frequent handwashing, and avoiding non-essential travel.
Recently, the South Korean government raised the Covid-19 alert level to the highest "Red" after the number of confirmed cases has risen to 763.
To date, there are no Filipinos in South Korea confirmed to be infected by the deadly disease.
Covid-19 research
Nograles bared that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is working with a medical center overseas that has agreed to collaborate with our Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in the development and possible use of a diagnostic test for detecting antibodies to the Covid-19 virus.
While purely for research purposes only, Nograles said this testing procedure will enable us more to accurately determine past infections, as well as new or recent infections to Covid-19 from collected samples of PUIs.
Academicians are also spearheading the initiative of identifying the efficacy of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) in combatting Covid-19 and are preparing to send the samples of VCO for testing within the week.
To prevent local transmission, Nograles said government has activated Barangay Health Emergency Rescue Teams (BHERTS) in all barangays in the country to help cities and municipalities monitor, report, and isolate potential Covid-19 cases in communities.
In the Philippines, there are 132 patients under investigation (PUIs) for Covid-19 who are currently admitted in hospitals. On the other hand, 474 PUIs having been discharged after testing negative.
Quoting the DOH, Nograles said there are now zero confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country. Out of the three initial confirmed cases, one has died while two patients have recovered and have since been discharged from the hospital. (PNA)
