Ronan for the character game! 🥰 Sorry you're in pain. 😔
Thank you so much for asking! And for the concern! 😅 (I finally got my SI joint popped back into place today after five weeks of suffering so I just have to wait out the pain and muscle spasms...hopefully it stays in!)
Ah, Ronan Lynch. One of my favorite characters in literature.😉
favorite thing about them: I like that he’s funny and a drama queen at times and I adore him when he’s overly dramatic (although it’s probably tiresome irl). He definitely feels like the most fleshed-out character in the entire series with all the mentions of his past likes and interests as well as his complex personality (obviously he's the author’s pet😜). He puts on a front a lot, but getting the chapters of Dream Thieves from his pov was so illuminating after the first book. I love how he takes care of his friends like killing the wasp in The Raven Boys for Gansey or all the things he does for Adam, but also cheering up Blue when she’s suspended from school. He loves deeply and shows it by his actions. Also he loves animals and Chainsaw seems like such an extension of him, I love it. And I like handcat too.😂
least favorite thing about them: Sometimes he makes really dumb choices and says really dumb, hurtful things--but then I sigh and realize that I was a kid once too and so did I. He isn’t perfect by any means, and I like that in a character. Oh, there’s that mention in the first book that he’s peeing on the woods to mark his territory and how Gansey jokes about never actually seeing him pee inside which is...kinda disturbing.🤣 And if it turns out that he's not a real boy but is instead some kind of ancient magical entity trapped in a boy suit, I might riot. That would definitely be my least favorite thing. I won't rant here.😁
favorite line: Oh man, Ronan gets some of the best lines in the series. I was just thinking about the time he taunted Whelk about "what they say about a man with a big bag" and how he’d show him his if Whelk showed him his. Or some of the things he said about Mallory being old—that was a hoot. He’s such a smartass and I love that about him.
BrOTP: Ronan and Blue 5eva.
OTP: with Adam, ofc. But I also ship him with Gansey (all that "I know what my dog needs" stuff🥵.) Or the three of them together (no, I don’t know the meaning of One True Pairing). I just love a good love story! Or PWP!😏😈
nOTP: I’ve read really good fic shipping Ronan with just about everyone but I don’t ship him with Blue other than besties who can bitch with each other.
random headcanon: I think that Ronan would love education on his own time, just not in a structured environment like Aglionby or a university. I could see him taking random college classes just for fun because they sound interesting and then really enjoying them (like a world mythology course or comparative religion). Or hands-on technical classes like welding because playing with fire (kinda) is cool but he proves good at it. I think he would love to learn for his own sake, but never for a grade or a degree.
unpopular opinion: I honestly don’t know what the popular opinion is in fandom but I don’t see Opal as Ronan’s daughter. Like at all. I think they’re more like weird siblings because he’s “known” her most of his life as he dreamed and even though she’s frozen at that age, I don’t think it’s a fatherly connection. She’s more like a little sister/part of him/kind of a pet that needs attention and care given to her but not as a full-time father. I don’t think he or Adam are anywhere near ready for fatherhood.
song i associate with them: I think of Fire Meet Gasoline by Sia when I think about Ronan and Adam.
favorite picture of them: ANYTHING by @catbishonen or @picapicae or @cassandrajp And this gorgeous one by @sikenpilled 😍😍😍
Thanks again for the ask! 😘 If anyone else wants to play, ask away!

Donovan steps out onto the back porch, stretching his arms and happy to no longer feel sharp pains or tingling in them. He gazes out into the wild green yonder, and spots Brutus crush a pile of slushy snow and make his way towards the lake. Rampage was seen breaching the water, splashing down with energetic force. Donnie makes his way to the cellar door, unlocking it to let out Baloo and Razor, the pair having woken up from hibernation not long ago. Baloo stumbles up the stairs, yawning as he wandered off in search of food. Razor however, slumps onto the grass, soaking up the warm sunlight with a smile. Donnie kneels down, scratching his snout affectionately. "Welcome back buddy."
He makes his way through the forest, watching as life comes back to the land around him. Bird Pokemon taking flight, or returning from migration. Bug and Grass Pokemon emerging from the soil or hibernation, feeding on the plant life around them, or soaking up the sun. Donovan finally comes to a treehouse, he and his dad having built it when he was a child. It's been repaired since, although it now belongs to someone else now. "Yo Blathers! Eglantine! You guys up?" A Hisuan Decidueye pokes his head out the doorway, Blathers greeting him with a hoot. His sister Eglantine, a normal Decidueye emerges from the treehouse and gives Donnie a gentle hoot and motions for him to join them. One quick climb up, and Donovan finds rhe treehouse decorated with dried plants and little trinkets they found around the forest....and in the corner in the nest, were three little Rowlet chicks, sleeping peacefully in the warm spring morning air. Donovan cooed as he looked down at them, noticing that one of the chicks was a shiny. "Heh. What are the odds?" He gives Eglantine a scratch under her chin, and gave Blathers a pat on the back. "Congratulations, Eggy. You're gonna be a great mom. And you Blathers, are gonna be a great uncle."
He strolls back to his home, happy about the days events when he feels a darkness in the area. Rather than be on edge, he simply smiles. "About time you came back, Lui'er. I was starting to miss your smartass comments."
Lui'er emerges from Donnie's shadow, and places an arm around his shoulder. "I don't know how to impress upon you that physical damage done to my body does not affect me in the long term. But yeah, it's good to be back, kid."

The 8 Steps of a CHARACTER ARC
1) Hero: Strength, Weakness, and Need
This happens in the setup of the story, when the main character’s ordinary world is being introduced. First, the main character’s strengths must be displayed; we must be given a reason to like them, or if not exactly “like” them, empathize with them, and be fascinated by them. The reader needs to bond with the character, feel concerned about how it all turns out for them. Or in other words, feel that the main character is worth experiencing the story. There are easy traits that do this: courage, love, humor, being in danger, being unfairly treated, being highly skilled at something, having a powerful noble goal. (Courage is the one they all need. If the character doesn’t have the gumption to actively pursue what they want, they are automatically a background character.)
After this, still in the beginning of your story, let the character exhibit what needs to change. Show their weaknesses of character and self awareness.
And lastly, hint at what they NEED to learn. Sometimes this is even stated to the character, and they don’t understand it, refuse to believe it, or condemn it. Like “A Christmas Carol”, when Scrooge’s nephew says his speech about Christmas and how wonderful it is, and Scrooge replies “Bah Humbug!"
2) Desire: This is the moment when the character knows what they need to pursue, in order to obtain what they inwardly want. It is not the inciting incident or catalyst, the event in a story that disrupts the ordinary world and calls the hero on an adventure. This is a separate step entirely, occurring after that catalyst has shattered life as the main character knows it. They believe obtaining this goal will calm whatever inner turmoil or conflict they’re battling. And always, they’re not quite right.
Think of Mr Fredricksen: His goal is to get the house – a symbolic representation of Ellie and the life he shared with her – to Paradise Falls, which he believes will heal his grief and guilt. It won’t. Once he obtains it, the achievement feels hollow. But I’m getting ahead of myself. So on we go!
3) Plan: Once in Act Two, the character is going to scramble for a plan of action. The inner want has solidified into a tangible goal, but they need a strategy to achieve it. This also spells out for the reader what to expect in that second act.
4) Conflict: What’s going to try stopping them? A hero with a goal is one thing, but to make it a story we need something that stands in the way. An obstacle. A force of opposition. If we didn’t have obstacles, books would be as interesting as "Harry Potter and the Trip to the Grocery Store.” (Although honestly, I’d probably read that.) After the catalyst has changed everything, after the character crosses the threshold into Act Two, everything from here on out will be laden with conflict. This is usually when enemies, or more accurately forces of opposition, begin to appear. Everything is accumulating to complicate the main character’s pathway to achieving what they want. The forces of opposition come from not only the villains, but from the actions that have to be taken to achieve the desire. Whatever this action is, it’s exactly what the main character is not suited to do, an action that pressures their flaws, exposes them to exactly what they need to become but can’t right now.
Like Stitch being forced to be the family dog. He’s not suited to this task.
5) Battle: The forces of opposition are amping up, growing stronger, fighting with greater intensity. The main character is taking the punches and working around them, relentlessly plowing forward. Hero and allies are usually punching back too.
6) Midpoint: This is the event where they first encounter what they need to learn, what they need to become. Something happens that forces them to behave in this new, life-saving way. But once they’ve seen it, they don’t know what to do with this knowledge.
7) Dark Night, Revelation, Choice:
This is always the darkest point in the story, where all seems lost, and death – of a literal or spiritual nature – is in the air. And in this moment, something usually happens that makes the main character wake up to what is wrong, and what they need. More often than not, this revelation will arrive from the “love story” or relationship of the plot, and will be the thing that helps them pull themselves out of despair and see the light. And once this is uncovered, once the revelation of the truth about themselves is recognized, they are faced with a choice. Of course, they’ve been faced with choices in every beat of every scene, but this is the big choice that is going to determine if their story has a happy ending or a tragic one. The choice is this: “You are being faced the truth that you need to heal. Are you going to choose what you need, let your old self die, and become someone better?” And always, always, always this is a hard choice. The revelation must be significant to them. And it’s never easy. It can’t be. We don’t write stories about heroes who make easy choices. Villains have it easy. Are you going to adopt this new way of living, adopt this truth, and let your old self die? Or are you going to stay the way you are (which feels safer and is much less challenging) but end up stuck in a sort of living death? Most of the time, of course, they choose the right thing.
This moment is usually always the saddest scene in the thing. Like this scene with Stitch.
8) New Life: This is their changed life. After experiencing the trials of the story, after realizing what they need and choosing to be reborn, they are going to be different people – and are going to live a different life. This is what follows the statement “And every day after …” What has changed? Show the audience how things are different, how things are better, because they want to see that. This is the resolution, the wrapping up of everything we’ve been through with the main character, and having this in the story is often what gives that feeling of satisfaction after seeing a really well-told story.
Ways to un-stick a stuck story
Do an outline, whatever way works best. Get yourself out of the word soup and know where the story is headed.
Conflicts and obstacles. Hurt the protagonist, put things in their way, this keeps the story interesting. An easy journey makes the story boring and boring is hard to write.
Change the POV. Sometimes all it takes to untangle a knotted story is to look at it through different eyes, be it through the sidekick, the antagonist, a minor character, whatever.
Know the characters. You can’t write a story if the characters are strangers to you. Know their likes, dislikes, fears, and most importantly, their motivation. This makes the path clearer.
Fill in holes. Writing doesn’t have to be linear; you can always go back and fill in plotholes, and add content and context.
Have flashbacks, hallucinations, dream sequences or foreshadowing events. These stir the story up, deviations from the expected course add a feeling of urgency and uncertainty to the narrative.
Introduce a new mystery. If there’s something that just doesn’t add up, a big question mark, the story becomes more compelling. Beware: this can also cause you to sink further into the mire.
Take something from your protagonist. A weapon, asset, ally or loved one. Force him to operate without it, it can reinvigorate a stale story.
Twists and betrayal. Maybe someone isn’t who they say they are or the protagonist is betrayed by someone he thought he could trust. This can shake the story up and get it rolling again.
Secrets. If someone has a deep, dark secret that they’re forced to lie about, it’s a good way to stir up some fresh conflict. New lies to cover up the old ones, the secret being revealed, and all the resulting chaos.
Kill someone. Make a character death that is productive to the plot, but not “just because”. If done well, it affects all the characters, stirs up the story and gets it moving.
Ill-advised character actions. Tension is created when a character we love does something we hate. Identify the thing the readers don’t want to happen, then engineer it so it happens worse than they imagined.
Create cliff-hangers. Keep the readers’ attention by putting the characters into new problems and make them wait for you to write your way out of it. This challenge can really bring out your creativity.
Raise the stakes. Make the consequences of failure worse, make the journey harder. Suddenly the protagonist’s goal is more than he expected, or he has to make an important choice.
Make the hero active. You can’t always wait for external influences on the characters, sometimes you have to make the hero take actions himself. Not necessarily to be successful, but active and complicit in the narrative.
Different threat levels. Make the conflicts on a physical level (“I’m about to be killed by a demon”), an emotional level (“But that demon was my true love”) and a philosophical level (“If I’m forced to kill my true love before they kill me, how can love ever succeed in the face of evil?”).
Figure out an ending. If you know where the story is going to end, it helps get the ball rolling towards that end, even if it’s not the same ending that you actually end up writing.
What if? What if the hero kills the antagonist now, gets captured, or goes insane? When you write down different questions like these, the answer to how to continue the story will present itself.
Start fresh or skip ahead. Delete the last five thousand words and try again. It’s terrifying at first, but frees you up for a fresh start to find a proper path. Or you can skip the part that’s putting you on edge – forget about that fidgety crap, you can do it later – and write the next scene. Whatever was in-between will come with time.

And Bucky Makes Three: Sunday Errands
The Wilsons plus One make a store run.
Follow the link for the whole anthology, but in the meantime, enjoy!
“I don’t think I’ve ever been that happy coming out of the Winn Dixie,” Sarah looked up from the truck, nodding her head in the direction of the grocery store.
Sam finished loading in the last of the load from Home Depot, glancing to where Sarah had indicated. He dusted his hands, chuckling to himself at the sight. “It’s been a long time since he’s been able to do things like that, sis. Let him have it.”
“Oh, I’m not mad,” Sarah clarified. She paused a moment to watch as her sons hooted with glee. Bucky had them both stacked into the cart atop the groceries. They held on for dear life as Bucky whipped them back and forth at high speeds. He was grinning as widely as the boys, looking happier than she’d ever seen him.
“Careful you don’t drool,” Sam interrupted, snapping the door of the truck bed back in place.
Sarah cut her eyes. “Shut up,” she tossed out half-heartedly. Her cheeks burned, but she prayed Sam wouldn’t be able to see it.
Her brother only shrugged, reaching for his metal thermos. He unscrewed the cap, offering it to her. “Want to take a drink? You seem thirsty.”
“Shut it,” Sarah instructed, shaking her head.
“I’m just saying. You gotta stay hydrated,” Sam pressed, smirking at her.
“Sam…” Sarah pleaded, aware that Bucky was in hearing radius. Living with a super soldier would be easier without a smartass for a brother.
Sam took pity, leaving her instead to join in the shopping cart shenanigans. He took over pushing his nephews around while Bucky stepped forward to load the groceries into the truck.
“Hey Sarah,” he smiled at her, his ridiculous little dimples popping at the corner of his mouth.
Sarah reached for Sam’s thermos, wrenching the cap off. “Hey Buck,” she managed to squeak out.
Hurrying to the other side of the truck, Sarah took a large gulp, willing herself to calm down.

G'raha. If someone beat me to that, then Ryne (or both if you'd like)
I bet everyone was expecting my Urianger answer to be the longest, but SURPRISE. This is going behind a cut with a warning: my opinion on G'raha is complicated and is not one of adoration. Please scroll on if that's an issue.
How I feel about this character I have ping-ponged WILDLY in my opinion on G'raha over the course of Shadowbringers.
First off, miqo dudes don't do it for me. Nothing about G'raha caught my attention early on. Just another miqo dude. I really didn't give a hoot about G'raha relative to the CT storylines. I was more concerned about the clones, and Nero. When I was playing CT G'raha was just this kid who was there and had the magic wooj that led to him sleeping in the Tower. Then in Shadowbringers, I find this fella, who's a really shitty summoner, yeeting my WOL across the rift to save the First, and who seemed more concerned about the WOL as a thing, as an ideal, as a means to an end, who sets up a really big scheme and compels others to keep it secret. But then he atones for that in 5.3 with a really unwavering Sacrifice Play and I can respect that; but in the next patch he's Glad Cling Wrap to the WOL and I honestly found it more than a little insufferable. Now in 5.5 he seems to have found his footing and the things about him I initially found absolutely annoying are proving to be a little more endearing as we discover that he's Like That with everyone he's only read about until now. It's been a literal rollercoaster between ambivalence/neutrality to NOPE DON'T LIKE HIM to ah, he's all right to NOPE DON'T LIKE HIM AGAIN to ah, he really is all right. So basically, it's a complex thing. In his role as the Crystal Exarch he did things to my character that were not endearing nor were signs that he cared, but as the New and Improved G'raha Tia, he seems to be willing to work it out and soft-reset the dynamic he has with WOL. So, at this point, I'm like "he's all right and he can stand in line with the rest of the Scions and take turns being in a role of importance." All the people I ship romantically with this character I'm not interested in shipping with G'raha so I do not have an answer for this. I'll just default to "WOLships are always fun". Dude needs to be adventuring and exploring and working on himself right now.
My non-romantic OTP for this character Honestly, I'd like to see him work more with Cid and Nero on Allagan stuff. Those two (ex) Garleans would drag him through the mud and it would be funny, but I don't doubt G'raha could keep pace with their brains.
My unpopular opinion about this character Unfortunately, I have more than one:
He's the favourite of the writers and it really shows in a way that I often don't like. He was given an excess of attention and cutscene time for a Patch Character and I really felt like in 5.4 we gave up Additional OG Scion Development just so he could shine bright and be the Important Guy one more time.
Crystal Exarch wasn't a good guy. See the next question for more on that. (G'raha Tia is doing his best to be a good guy, though.)
There's no reason that he should be considered the de facto love interest for WOL because he was *~*inspired*~* by them.
I will add that Fevered Fandom Favouritism really affected my enjoyment of this character, for good or ill.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon I wish 5.4 hadn't written G'raha as a smothering younger brother type who wants to go everywhere with WOL and that WOL is shoehorned into being absolutely okay with this. I wasn't even given the option to be smartassed in his direction. I would have liked for WOL to have at least had a window to say HEY G'RAHA, THAT WASN'T VERY CASH MONEY OF YOU. I know that the game has to go in one direction and that this isn't a Bioware game, but I was able to imply that my WOL read Urianger the riot act for his actions post-Crown of the Immaculate, so why didn't I have that option with G'raha (who was the guy who put Urianger up to the actions I was able to have my WOL read him the riot act for)? I really, really felt like the writing was shaking G'raha in front of me and demanding that I like him, and I don't like it when I feel like that's what the text is telling me, and I instinctively rebel against it. This was solved in 5.5, thank goodness.

Uneventful
(Here’s a Yandere Rappa x Female Reader who doesn’t give a hoot about his tendencies (lol I learned that phrase from one of my online professors) and just lets shit happen ;)) Sorry that this is so short!
TW: unhealthy behaviour, mentions of stalking, irrational fear of cheating, etc..
Please don’t proceed if any of these themes are triggering. Also, this was a request of any yandere x s/o who doesn’t care about their yandere tendencies.)
Unlocking your beat up front door, you chuck it open, and damn near collapse in the foyer. Working as a (waiter/waitress) is tiring, and after your ten hour shift, all you want to do is sleep.
Kicking off your black (trainers/heels), you slam the door closed behind you, and yell out for your large boyfriend, “Kendou, I’m home!” You place your (coat/bag) on the coat rack and run a hand down your face firefly.
When you don’t hear a response, you raise an eyebrow, and venture further into the apartment.
“Kendou Rappa, are you there?” You tiredly walk past the kitchen, not seeing him or dinner, “Don't tell me you ate without me! That’s so rude!” Pouting slightly, you enter the bedroom, and finally see your beast of a boyfriend, “There you are,” He doesn’t turn towards you, “Kendou?”
He’s unmoving. He doesn’t even look to be breathing. Hurrying over to him, you place a hand on his shoulder, your face knit with concern.
“Baby, what’s wrong-?” He shoves your hand off of him, and whips around to look at you. His eyes are red and puffy, which brings you to believe that he was crying.
“I know what you’re doing!” You tilt your head in confusion, making him flush with anger, “Don’t look at me like that! I know that you’re cheating on me with that dickhead Dabi!” Kendou believes that you’re cheating on him with…. Dabi? That asshole of all people?
“Why on earth would you think that, Ken?” A look of hurt flashes over your face, “He’s an awful person! Why would I downgrade to trash, when I have a winning lottery ticket in my hand already?” You caress his face with your hands, which he tries to swat away. He was unable to. Climbing over the bed, you sit next to him, and coax his head onto your shoulder. Running a hand through his hair, you smooch the top of his head, “What happened today, baby?”
The large man sniffles pitifully, but starts to spill his guts, “I went to visit you earlier, and I saw you talking with Dabi.” Rolling your eyes, you turn towards him and roll your eyes.
“He’s a customer, Ken, I can't just ignore him. But, I can promise that there’s nothing between us. If you want, I’ll even ask my boss if you can stay with me tomorrow to protect me from him,” He reaches down to hold yours, and intertwines his fingers with your own. After a long moment of silence, he speaks once more.
“Ya promise yer not in cahoots with the burn unit?” Hearing his normal gruff tone come back makes you smile happily. Nodding, you squeeze his hand reassuringly.
“I promise. You’re my one and only. I could never see myself with anyone else, so please don’t forget that,” He kisses the top of your head tenderly, before scooping you into his lap, and wrapping his large arms around your midsection. You lay your arms on top of his with a happy hum.
“I’m sorry for freaking out, I just-” You shush him, and lay your head back on his chest.
“It’s okay, Ken. I understand why you’re so worried, and, if anything, I love how protective you are. After you became a part of my life, I haven’t felt unsafe! I mean, who would want to fight my big, strong boyfriend? I sure wouldn’t!” You feel him chuckle behind you, his wellbuilt chest rumbling.
“Ya got me there, Babe. But still, I feel a lil’ guilty. Whaddaya’ say to eatin’ out on me?”
“Eat on you? I’ll pass-” The large man starts to (tickle/poke) you unyieldingly, causing you to shriek in surprise.
“Okay, smartass, I guess ya don’t want free food!” Shoving his hand away, you laugh happily.
“I’m just messing with you! Of course I want free food!” Your chest heaves in and out deeply, face flushed. You relax back into his chest one more, trying to catch your breath. Without warning, Kendou stands up with you securely in his arms.
“Then let’s go! I I wanna get some chicken nuggets.”

Tumblr media
Just as she was finishing up her makeup in the bathroom before work, an unflattering photo of her longtime boyfriend wearing a bright green face mask illuminated her phone screen, signifying that he was trying to facetime with her. The photo always made her laugh no matter how hard her day had been, so she’d set it as his contact photo.
“Hello my beautiful boy,” Y/N sang when the call adjusted and she could finally see Harry’s face smiling at her from ear to ear.
“And hello to you too, my beautiful birthday girl!” Harry exclaimed right back.
Much to his protest, Harry had ended up smack dab in the middle of a North American tour on his girlfriend’s birthday. He’d tried his hardest to schedule a break in between today so he would be able to spend some time with her on her special day, but it didn’t end up working out and both Harry and Y/N were fairly bummed about it.
“Thank you, love,” she grinned into the camera, making Harry’s heart soar.
“Ye’ getting ready f’ work?”
“Unfortunately,” Y/N faked a pout, “Should be an easy day, though. What about you?”
“Just got back to m’ hotel room. Show tonight was great. I wish you could’ve gotten off work to hop on tour for a few days.”
“You know how my boss is,” Y/N sounded somewhat sad and it made Harry’s chest feel tight knowing how badly she had wanted to come visit him.
“Hmm,” Harry pondered, “’M starting t’ think she’s got a crush on me n’ that’s why she never gives you any days off.”
This made a laugh blossom from deep in Y/N’s belly.
“Everyone’s got a crush on you, bubby.”
“Too bad I’ve only got eyes f’ you. Anyways,” Harry quickly moved on to the next subject.
“I’ve called you to tell you where I’ve hidden your birthday present.”
“Harry,” Y/N scolded him, “I told you not to get me anything.”
“Yeah, well, ye’ know I wasn’t gonna listen. Love spoilin’ ya. It’s in the back of my underwear drawer. Should be a little velvet box.”
Y/N rolled her eyes at Harry to which he blew her a cheeky kiss through the screen in response. She grabbed her phone while she traveled from the bathroom into their bedroom and began riffling through Harry’s intimates drawer.
“Quick question, H. Why your underwear drawer?”
All Harry could see of Y/N was her forehead while her fingers moved past his folded up boxers and dug for the small gift.
“It’s the only thing of mine you don’t steal. Figured it’d be least likely t’ be found if I kept it in there when I left.”
“Touche, my love. Alright, I’ve got it. Want me to open it now?”
“It would kinda make sense to, now, wouldn’t it?”
“You’re such a smartass.”
“You love me anyway.”
She chuckled as she propped her cell phone up against her bedside lamp so Harry could see her reaction when she found out what was inside. When she removed the small metallic bow that was placed on top, she lifted the lid and her expression turned into one of confusion and uncertainty.
“Is this the ring that you lost a few months ago?”
Indeed, it was. It was Y/N’s favorite out of the hefty collection of rings that Harry hoarded. Sometimes, Harry would let her pick out which rings he wore and her eyes always landed on that one. She was never able to give him a reason other than she was simply drawn to it; the way it danced in the sunlight when his hand stuck out from the covers in the morning, the way it accentuated his perfect, long fingers.
Or perhaps, there was a reason why she loved it so much. This ring in particular was one that Harry had purchased from a local jewler when they were on a holiday in Greece. That very same night, Harry had gotten wine-drunk (more like wine-wasted) and had confessed a secret to her.
“You know something, Y/n?” he drunkenly babbled whilst wagged his finger adorned with his new ring in her face, “I’m gonna marry you one day.”
She’d never bring the memory back up to Harry, however she was never able to forget that night or his ring waving itself right in front of his face. It was just another one of those moments where she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Harry was the one for her. Knowing this, one could have seen why Y/N had gotten rather upset when Harry had revealed to her that he had “misplaced it” and had no earthly idea where it had gone. Unbeknownst to her, Harry hadn’t actually lost it at all.
“It is. I didn’t actually lose it. I know ye’ love it, so I had it sized down to fit your finger. Do ye’ like it?”
“I love it. Thank you, Harry.”
Y/N felt her eyes instinctively well up with tears. She hadn’t told Harry, but she always had a hard time whenever he was gone for prolonged periods of time. The bed was always cold, her meals didn’t taste as good, and there was no one there to hold her when her day went less than ideal. Knowing how much thought went into a gift like this only widened the hole in her heart that appeared every time Harry left for tour.
“Aww, don’t cry, lovie. Not on your birthday.”
Y/N gently wiped the corners of her eyes and shook her head, “I’m good. Promise. Just miss you a lot is all.”
“Miss you too, baby. I wish I wasn’t so far away from ye’.”
“It’s only a few more weeks, right? I’ll survive,” Y/N stood up from where she was sat on the bed and straightened out her blouse before picking the phone up from the nightstand, “Guess I should probably head out now.”
“Alright,” Harry reassured her with a wrinkle in his brow.
He absolutely hated knowing that his girl was upset. Not only because it was her birthday, a day that was all about celebrating her, but because he was on another continent and couldn’t be there to soothe her.
“I’ll call you again tonight. Sound good?”
“Sounds great.”
“Have a good day, Y/N,” Harry said sincerely.
“I’ll try.”
They exchanged one last loving look before Y/N ended the call and left the house she shared with Harry to go to work.
Her day wasn’t half as bad as she’d envisioned it to be. Upon arrival, her coworkers greeted her with her favorite coffee and donuts accompanied by a plethora of multi-colored balloons tossed about the office space. Everyone was extra nice to her and offered to take on some of her paperwork for her, which she certainly didn’t mind. Around lunchtime, she received a massive delivery of canary yellow sunflowers from the one and only, Harry Styles. Attached to the bouquet was a simple note card that read, For my sunflower on her special day. -H. This earned her a series of hoots and hollers from the other employees at the office (and she almost swears a scolding look from her boss), which she promptly brushed off and continued on working.
On the long drive home, she’d chatted with her small, close group of friends about the outing they had planned for her that weekend. It was mostly about the bars they had planned on going to and about how wasted they knew they were going to be, but even the playful banter in between them couldn’t manage to pull Y/N out of the funk she was in. Sure, she could put on a happy face and act like she enjoyed the attention she was receiving for her birthday, but none of it really meant much when the one person she cared about most wasn’t there to celebrate with her.
When she opened the front door she was hit by the overwhelming scent of aromatics coming from her kitchen. She hadn’t cooked anything this smelly in at least a few days and she certainly didn’t recall smelling it on her way out the door this morning, so her senses were on high alert. Her finger hovered over the emergency button on her cell phone as she rounded the corner, only to be greeted by a tall, curly-headed man-child boiling pasta in his periwinkle-colored bathrobe.
“Harry?!”
“Fuck,” he cursed aloud, “I didn’t think you’d be home this early. I thought I’d have it all done before you got here.”
Typical Harry. The boy’s got big ideas, but his ability to pull them off seldom comes to fruition.
“Well, don’t just stand there. Come kiss me, stupid.”
Harry took a few long strides over to his girlfriend and engulfed her in a bone-crushing hug and kiss, one that left her breathless and feeling full of love. His lips worked passionately against her own and the tip of his tongue prodded at her bottom lip, just the way that he knew she liked. When he pulled back from holding her mouth against his, he saw that she was really crying this time, unable to stop the flow of salty tears from running down her cheekbones and down her chin.
“What are you even doing here?” she asked Harry as he wiped her tears with the pads of this thumb. “I thought you had a show tonight.”
“You see, Y/N. Time zones can be a beautiful thing. I found out I could make it here with a few hours t’ spare before my next show, so I hopped on a plane right after I got off the phone w’ you.”
“You didn’t have to do this, Harry.”
“But I wanted to. Hated seeing you upset this mornin’.”
He noticed she was twiddling the ring he’d gifted her this morning around her finger, to which he raised her hand and inspected it with his own eyes instead of through his phone screen.
“Looks good on you, dunnit?”
Y/N nodded her head, still unable to comprehend that her boyfriend had flown across the globe to see her on her birthday. There weren’t many people on this earth like Harry, and she had never felt happier to know that she had the privilege of being loved by one.
“I love it, H. I really do. Thank you. For all of this.”
She moved her hand away from Harry’s face to kiss his lips once more.
“How long are you staying?” she continued.
Harry sighed, “’ve got to leave at 2am to make it to the show on time.”
“That’s alright. Any time is better than no time.”
“Exactly,” Harry agreed with his love, “So why don’t ye’ go upstairs and change while I finish cookin’ so we can make the most of it, yeah?”
“Yeah, I’ll be right back,” she pulled him in for a third kiss before reluctantly leaving Harry’s side to take off her uncomfortable work clothes.
Just as she ascended the steps that led to their bedroom, she heard Harry call out.
“Actually, don’t bother! It’s not like you’ll have your clothes on for very long anyway!”
