Chinese Music Recs: 2021 Update

I looked back at my blog archive and was surprised to see that my last music recommendations post was in November 2020—almost a year ago! Well I did have my Mandarin Music March challenge, but I’m not counting that. Here’s an update on what I’ve been listening to the last 6 months or so.

蔡健雅 / Tanya Chua I have included Tanya Chua in past recommendation posts and featured a few of her songs on my blog, but I've been listening to her constantly this year, so I wanted to highlight her amazing music again. I am not a huge ballad/slow song fan, but I love hers. And she does great upbeat pop songs too. Favorite album: 双栖动物（2005） Favorite songs: 原谅、达尔文、坐立不安、无底洞、生锈游乐场

沈以诚 / Eason Shen Have you ever wondered what country-inspired Mandopop would sound like? Well you can find out right now. I discovered Eason Shen during my August challenge. He also has more typical pop songs, from slow and calm to uptempo to soulful. Favorite album: 玩家（2020） Favorite songs: 牛仔、寻宝、巴赫旧约（翻唱）、15楼窗外、形容 *First two songs are the ones with country influence.

林宥嘉 / Yoga Lin Yoga Lin is another artist I’d heard of but overlooked for whatever reason. I checked out one of his albums during my August music challenge and instantly fell in love. He’s already become one of my top 10 most played artists of 2021. I would describe a lot of his music as pop rock. Favorite album: 大小说家（2012） Favorite songs: 白昼之月、唐人街、感同身受、慢一点、4号病房

莫文蔚 / Karen Mok I made the mistake of not checking out Karen Mok earlier because I assumed most of her music was in Cantonese—she has actually released more Mandarin albums than Cantonese! Her older albums have some great rock-leaning and almost grungy tracks, and I love some of her more recent slow songs. Favorite album: 如果没有你（2006） Favorite songs: 境外、溜溜的情歌、懒得管、薄荷、女朋友的男朋友

张惠妹 / A-Mei A-Mei is a Mandopop legend. She has a very powerful voice that works well for slow, emotional ballads and face-paced rock songs alike. I see her songs covered on various singing shows often as well. I particularly enjoy her more bombastic ballads and the rock tracks from her AMIT albums. Favorite album: 阿米特（2009） Favorite songs: 也许明天、装醉、开门见山、血腥爱情故事、我最亲爱的

徐佳莹 / LaLa Hsu I’ve known about LaLa Hsu for years, but I never explored her music much until more recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the versatility of her voice and the diversity of her discography! It’s been about 4 years since her last album, so I’m hoping she has something in the works. Favorite album: 心里学（2017） Favorite songs: 你敢不敢、到此为止、理想人生、现在不跳舞要干嘛、灰色

陈势安 / Andrew Tan I first heard of Andrew Tan through a cover of his song 天后 by Jeno Liu 刘力扬. Both versions are great, and I recommend you give both a listen. Anyway, Andrew Tan has a very deep, rich voice with a lot of soul. His newest album has some great pop hits that I can’t get out of my head. Favorite album: 唯一想了解的人（2021） Favorite songs: 唯一想了解的人、兜圈、天后、我们都伤、势在必行

田馥甄 / Hebe Tien Hebe is another artist I neglected to check out sooner because I had heard her song 《不醉不会》 years ago and didn’t care for it. However, her latest album really struck a chord with me, so I’ve been going through her discography. She has some fantastic slow, emotional songs and some stuff with more edge too. Favorite album: 无人知晓（2020） Favorite songs: 讽刺的情书、底里歇斯、终身大事、人间烟火、小幸运

李荣浩 / Li Ronghao Watching Li Ronghao on 青春有你3 inspired me to finally check out his music. I definitely get the hype. His style is pretty distinctive (but I honestly don’t think I can describe it well) and he releases a lot of long 4:30-5:00+ minute songs, so he’s not for everyone, but I saved at least a couple songs from all of his albums. Favorite album: 嗯（2017） Favorite songs: 戒烟、不将就、李白、满座、老友谊

陈奕迅 / Eason Chan I’ve just started exploring Eason Chan’s discography, but so far there’s a lot to like. As a Hong Kong singer, he has Cantonese and Mandarin albums (and some albums with both languages), but I’m just sticking to Mandarin for now. I can’t wait to hear more soon! Favorite album (so far): 认了吧（2007） Favorite songs (so far): 烟味、让我留在你身边、快乐男生、放弃治疗、陪你度过漫长岁月

《在水一方》 performed by 李健

So I wanted to talk about this song not only because I think it’s a good song, but also because its lyrics are based on a poem from the 诗经！ It was released in 1975, and the original singers are 高凌风 and 江蕾 . It’s a pretty famous song, though, and has been sung by a wide range of singers like 邓丽君 Teresa Teng.

The lyrics of 《在水一方 》 are based on the poem 《诗经·蒹葭》, and like all poems from this collection the author is anonymous (though there are rumors about who collected/edited the 诗经).

《蒹葭》

蒹葭苍苍，白露为霜。所谓伊人，在水一方。溯洄从之，道阻且长。溯游从之，宛在水中央。

蒹葭萋萋，白露未晞。所谓伊人，在水之湄。溯洄从之，道阻且跻。溯游从之，宛在水中坻。

蒹葭采采，白露未已。所谓伊人，在水之涘。溯洄从之，道阻且右。溯游从之，宛在水中沚。

This is a poem about someone looking for the person they love and ultimately failing. When considering the phrase 白露为霜, it seems the poem takes place during the autumn. These descriptions of the dew also help show the passing of time, letting us know that this person has spent the whole day searching. At the beginning, 白露为霜 the dew is frozen, thus it is the morning; in the middle, 白露未晞 the dew has not yet dried, so it is close to midday; at the end, 白露未已 the dew is dried, thus it is afternoon, at least. 

The poem is repetitive, and only changes a few words in each line. It often uses synonyms of words that express similar ideas. 苍苍、萋萋、and 采采 are one example. There is also 水一方、水之湄、 and 水之涘, which all describe the water’s edge; and 水中央、水中坻、and 水中沚, which describe a location in the middle of the water.

苍苍 cang1 cang1、萋萋 qi1 qi1、采采 cai3 cai3 these three words are all used to describe the reeds as flourishing

宛 wan3 as if

坻 chi2、沚 zhi3 these both mean “islet”

湄 mei2 brink, edge

涘 si4 river bank

KONOSUBA Megumin VA Rie Takahashi Posts New Illustrated MV "Unhealthy Society"

    Voice actress Rie Takahashi, best known as Megumin in KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world! and Emilia in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, has released an illustrated music video for "Fukenko Shakai" (Unhealthy Society). It is the third clip from her first mini album as a solo singer, "Toumei na Fusen" (Invisible Stickies) released in June 2021, and each clip features illustrations by a different illustrator. 

  The clip featuring illustrations by Tsuda tells the activities of an unidentified character in a toxic society. The song “传奇” translates into “Legend” in English. The song gained huge popularity after Chinese superstar Faye Wong performed it at the 2011 Spring Gala. The lyrics are abouts sense of unshakable longing for the person he loves.

Li Jian is a Chinese singer who started his musical career as a member of the duo "Shui Mu Nian Hua" and began his solo career in 2002. To date, he has produced eight albums. He has won first place on episodes of I Am a Singer Season 3 and Singer 2017, and has also served as an adviser on The Voice of China (season 4).

Reading Chinese Names: Male Names

Part 2 of Reading Chinese Names, click here to see part 1 on female names!

In this part, I compiled a list of over 1000 Chinese male names which combined consisted on 579 unique characters. These names came from participants on idol survival shows and other singers and actors. I did my best to remove duplicate individuals and not include stage names that are not authentic Chinese names (like 奥斯卡). A lot of performers go by stage names that sound authentic or have changed their legal name–I included these. I separated the names into individual characters and then counted how many times each character occurred. Note that these data are not necessarily representative of the overall populations of China and Taiwan. However, I think this info is still valuable.

Below I have the top 82 characters, aka those that were found at least 5 times. I’ve included all the counts for those who may be interested. Characters also found on the females names list are bolded.

子 zǐ - son, child, seed, egg, small thing / 24

杰 jié - hero, heroic, outstanding person, prominent, distinguished / 24

文 wén - language, culture, writing, formal, literary, gentle / 23

武汉肺炎疫情在全球爆发开来，对中国政府来说，至今最急迫该打的仗，除了疫情，还有舆情。于是在中国，除了生命的病与亡，还有大规模封号、删文、群组消失等“灾情”。

《报导者》专访加拿大公民实验室（Citizen Lab）、中国“武汉人间”资料库的管理者，掌握中国两大社交平台YY、微信上被封锁的561个关键字，以及超过1,300条武汉民众的求助讯息。透过这些大部分已被消失的讯息，理解中国政府如何透过宣传与封锁，将自己塑造成“全球抗疫典范”，而人们求生的机会、全球公卫专家研判疫情的讯号，又是如何跟着中共的“舆情整治”，消失无踪。

在2月10日那天，中国官媒央视的一则新闻，抓住软体工程师晓武（化名）的眼球。

截止到2月9日，武汉一共排查了3,371个社区村，按户数算??排查的百分比达到98.6%，人数排查���分比达到99%。

荧幕上，武汉市市委书记马国强（编按：在2月13日被免职）郑重宣布检测武汉肺炎疫情的新进度，他说，至2月8日，武汉有确诊重症患者1,499人尚未入院，经过两天努力，1,499人已都入院了！央视同时在社群媒体使用了“#武汉人数排查达到99%”tag，上了热搜。

“被消失”的武汉肺炎患者求助讯息

晓武把目光移回央视之外的世界，在新浪微博上，从1月底开始，就有数以千计的求助讯息在跳动，讯息来自武汉，却看似发自炼狱：52岁的聂丽华，呼吸困难已经4天，需要吸氧，一人在家、无人看护，至今未能做核酸检测；

32岁的秦小月反覆发烧，但封城之后没有车、没有公共交通，求助电话打遍了都没有用，她问：“该如何去医院排查？”；

52岁的曾迪与62岁严重心脏病患者浦宏连，高烧8天，无医院收治；

90岁的黄仁强病情严重，在家中倒地不能起身，还没来得及确诊；

57岁的汪平，亲人于一周前死于武汉肺炎，全家跟着染病，高烧不退但无医院收治，社区与隔离酒店互推不管，已有3天未进食、呼吸困难??。

这些，都是由病患的家属、本人贴在微博上的公开求助讯息。按照微博2月5日的说法，全中国社会各界共发布19.5万条求助微博，包括473家医院院方，都只能透过微博求助。

一天被爆删3千文，他建资料库螳臂挡车

“惨，太惨了，而且和新闻完全『对不上』，”晓武接受《报导者》专访时说，这些求助贴文，包括姓名、电话、地址甚至看诊单等资讯，“这些是最真实的故事，而且人民的声音需要被记住。”晓武称自己在家没事，就花了约20个小时，架出“武汉人间”网站，将2月3号起的1,300多条讯息保留下来。

架起网站，晓武才被网友告知，这些求救讯息正从微博上消失。自从微博官方2月3日发现“肺炎患者求助超话”的存在；在上头，一天内的求救讯息从3,000多条跌到142条。对此，平台称有超过8成的求助讯息属无效，因而删除。

“我个人还是希望更多人能看到这些个体的故事，他们绝不应遭此劫难；而我们每个人，都不能说是无辜的，”晓武意有所指地说。他坦承自己不是第一次做“社会意义”的专案，以安全为由，不肯对我们透露更多关于他的个人资讯，人在中国的他也因为疫情而在家，他说自己的起心动念不复杂，反正在家没事，所以动手做了这个网站。

这次疫情，他看见走投无路的人们，连最后的求救讯息，都被平台以限流甚至封号的方式，减低曝光，他认为自己必须做些什么。网站架好的一周，他每一天都修正一些，才能够睡得着觉。

“我希望网站可以让更多人关注和感受每一位患病的同胞，作为一个和我们一样的鲜活的人，通过他们第一人称的口吻，体会到他们面对的困难、痛苦、绝望、生离死别。”

像是从森林大火中试图保留一片绿林，晓武的网站，虽然已有超过10万人浏览，有网友帮忙备份、有网友来信要出力帮忙，但也抵不上中国政府倾国之力打的舆情战。

他对上的，是习近平下的战令。

“要加强舆论引导、加强有关政策措施宣传解读工作。”1月25日中共中央政治局常��委员会针对疫情召开会议，习近平清楚指示，启动官方所谓的疫情、舆情、心理三大战场。会议当天，微信安全中心跟着发布《关于新型冠状病毒肺炎相关谣言专项治理的公告》，要把违规者判最高7年的有期徒刑。至今，微信上“封号”声不断，许多人因不明原因，突然帐号不得使用，封号一度成为微博上的超级话题。还有人发明摩斯密码贴文的方法，或是以“翠”（习与卒字的结合）、皇上驾崩等图代称习近平，来试图躲过封锁。

500组关键字分析：疫情封锁，早在李文亮吹哨后就展开

《报导者》从加拿大多伦多大学的公民实验室报告中发现，这场封锁，其实从2019年底，医师李文亮在群组中提出武汉肺炎警告之后，就已开打。

“研究结果发现，在中共官方正式公布疫情（编按：1月20日，医生钟南山于央视受访）以及人传人的可能性前三周，社交平台就开始封锁相关字眼，而这有极大的可能代表在疫情散布的早期，平台就收到政府要求进行封锁，”公民实验室在报告中写道，在12月31日，也就是李文亮在群组中发出警告讯息的隔天，中国直播平台“YY”的言论审查清单，就新增了45个关键字，大部分与武汉地方政府组织、生鲜市场、不明病毒、SARS症状相关，只要用户的讯息里包含P4病毒实验室、海鲜市场等字眼，讯息就发不出去。

而在近10亿人使用的微信平台上，公民实验室则从中国疫情最严重的1月观察到2月中，发现“审查名单”上至少新增516个关键字组合。以中国电话注册的使用者，只要发出的讯息里含有这516个字词组合之一，讯息就无法送出去。

这516个字词组合，有近200个与中央领导有关，包括习近平、李克强等字眼，对于他们失能的批评，如习近平总书记＋形式主义、习近平＋问责、习近平＋喊口号；或是对他们是否亲自到了武汉、火神山医院、悬��式下跌等讨论，都会被封。第二则是关于政府角色与政策，对于地方政府的批评、对红十字会的不满、“被狗吃了”，甚至连讽刺语“官状病毒”也都上榜。

另外值得注意的是，台湾的口罩禁止出口政策，香港林郑月娥不肯封关和香港医护人员罢工，也都成为被封的字眼，台港议题在疫情期间的“舆情之战”中也同时受控。除了李文亮，从香港反送中运动“借镜”的光复武汉、关于疫情的五大诉求和其他关于公民运动的字眼，全都上了审查名单。

平台担心社群失控，连官媒用字、客观事实也禁言

公民实验室研究员洛特丝?卢昂（Lotus Ruan）在接受《报导者》专访时表示，这次的大规模封锁，与中国政府于两会期间、特定敏感时刻如六四等发生的网路审查，没有太大的不同，但关键是，武汉肺炎疫情是影响全球的公卫危机，中国的审查却连中性的名称、事件、描述都会封锁──当微信已成为中国国内甚至国际的主要讯息传播平台之一时，这会严重影响疫情的判断与发展。她举例，被封锁的关键字组合中，包括了封城、隔离，法院公告、美国疾控中心、冠状病毒、西医疗法等相当中性的字眼也都被封。

“科普性的、知识性的讯息没办法流通，不管在哪个地方都是（处理）公共事件、卫生事件很大的问题，”卢昂说。

虽然没办法拿到内部公文，但长期观察中国言论审查的公民实验室指出，“我们知道公私部门是一同『管理』事件的，但观察来看，连被报导过的（政策、事件名）都被审查。可能是平台业者怕无法控制言论，所以扩大范围。”

公民实验室在微信上的测试方法，主要挑选来自中国媒体的话题关键字，由于微信帐号有区分中国用户与国际用户，实验室把可能被封锁的字眼，透过国际帐号传向中国用户，结果讯息只会出现在国际用户端的荧幕上，另一端中国用户会看不到。以此方法做为测试。

卢昂解释，能在中国媒体上刊登的文字，已经是通过第一关审查了，但连这些字眼的各种排列组合都会被封，代表平台认为同个议题、同个字句，在社交平台上的讨论，有可能不被官方认可，或担心讨论热度之大，无法控制，“以防失控，干脆审查，”卢昂形容。

透过过去的文件以及研究，公民实验室指出，在重大事件或是敏感时刻，中国社交平台企业都会收到政府压力。即使无法明确知道中国政府对企业的具体指令，但这份研究报告的结果指出，平台最早可能从2019年12月底，李文亮吹哨的隔天，就收到了官方的指导方针、展开审查。

官方两手策略：强力审查与扩大宣传

中国所谓的“舆情战”，包括审查与宣传。“宣传与审查是一个硬币的两面，在中国，这制造了长久以来的矛盾，审查是由私营部门实施的，”卢昂指出，这一次广泛地审查，可能来自于中国网路审查机制由官、民两个层次组合下的结果。官方负责公布法令、指导方针，而后由民间企业投入资源、技术、人力，进行审查，若内容违法，结果由平台自负。

其中，企业的行为与政府指令会存在时间差。当企业自觉跟不上政府管理舆论的速度，或是觉得得不到清楚的指令，为了自保，就会加大审查力道。

企业端加大力度，是因为上头施力。在2月5日，中国网信办发布公告，要对网路平台实施立即的惩罚，包括应用程式下架、依法约谈业者，如平台违法，要进行“全面深入整改”。

这份公告直接点名新浪微博、腾讯、字节跳动（抖音母公司）等平台进行专项督导。公民实验室的报告，也是从2月初开始观察到大量关键字被封锁，微博也从在同时间开始管制求救讯息。

在一波强力审查后，中共官方也开始启动宣传机器，自2月底开始，把自己从疫情的输出国，形塑成世界抗疫的教科书，宣布计划出版《大国战“疫”》一书，以5种语言向世界输出经验，全书10万字，“用科学的态度和平实的语言，客观讲述中国有力有效防控疫情魔鬼的真相和事实”、“展现中国积极与国际社会合作、共同维护全球和地区公共卫生安全的巨大努力”，官媒《新华社》如此介绍。

美国最有影响力的外交智库外交关系委员会（Council on Foreign Relations）亚洲研究负责人易明（Elizabeth C. Economy）接受《纽约时报》（The New York Times）专访时表示，随着病毒在全球传播，习近平面临国际社会的审视跟批评，大打舆情战，“重塑形象似乎是习近平为推卸责任、避免国际社会要求公开真相的孤注一掷之举。”

封了讯息，公共健康连带陪葬

但习近平的孤注一掷，化成过度广泛的资讯审查，可能让疫情的控制与公共健康跟着陪葬。

卢昂指出，此次中国对于资讯的“管理”竟连客观事实都加以封锁，对于疫情的影响着实令人不安。她提醒，在公共危机之时，对于资讯的管控，包括事实查核、对抗阴谋论、给予正确的讯息等，不是不能做，但必须在透明可监督之下进行。中国的言论审查不但不透明，是连谈论事实也都封锁了，“限制一般民众的讨论、实际资讯的交换，有完全相反的效果，并限制大众（对疫情）的意识，也限制民众的回应。”

著有《网路安全与网路战争》一书的现代战争专家辛格（Peter W. Singer），也发表专文指出，中国此次展开的舆情战，是极权者惯用的手法：审查、转移焦点、谎言。

他点明，“中国使用这3项手段的方式，清楚展现为了维权展开的网路战，如何反向伤害公共健康，”他指的正是这次公民实验室报告所证明的，在2019年12月31号、李文亮吹哨隔天，中国如何选择先审查，而不正面处理公卫危机，“这揭示了极权政府心中真正在乎的是什么，”辛格说。

中国舆情战，伤害全球公卫预警系统

跟着中国政府的舆情战豪赌的，不只是中国人民的公共健康，更包括全世界。

在2019年12月31号，除了李文亮提出的警讯，全球传染病防疫系统“全球疾病警报地图（HealthMap）”、ProMED、BlueDot等组织，都公开发布类SARS疾病在武汉出现的警讯。

这些透过人工智慧运算来预测全球疫情的系统，在武汉肺炎之前，已成功预测伊波拉、禽流感的发生，在SARS发生后，资料科学与公卫专家们透过医疗、保险、消费、飞航、地方新闻以及社交网站公开数据，试图加强全球预警机；但中国试图删除、管理、掩灭非“正能量”的网路内容，却为全球预警系统的成效，埋下地雷。

曾运用Twitter资料追踪流感应用、并发表文章的加州圣地牙哥大学HDMA（Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age）中心主任邹明祥接受《报导者》专访时解释，社交平台上的内容，对于灾害防治的准备、反应、恢复、长期的应变都有帮助，决策者可以透过这些数据，即时的理解政策的效果、民众的反应，并且掌握疫情。

他以武汉求救讯息为例，数千名来自武汉各区的求救讯息中，地理位置可供政府判断哪里需要增设新的侦测点，中国网路实名制的设计，也可能让政府进一步掌握人口分布情况。求助讯息的数量，也可以理解政策的效果，例如方舱医院的设立，有没有成功降低求救的数量？最重要的是，这些求助讯息，细致而真实，对于未来传染病传播预测模型的建立，相当有帮助。

新科技却撞上老问题

邹明祥回忆，当时，SARS的疫情因为中国政府延后回报，国际社会错失第一时间反应的契机。SARS后，专家们另寻他途，希望建立全球性自动化的数据分析系统，对未知疾病的传播进行预测。但系统的成效仰赖资讯透明、分享的程度。

17年后，人们的确有了新技术，但此次疫情却又被老问题耽误了。

“（当时）很多中国传来的讯息一下子就不见了（指被审查删除），如果在疫情的早期来说，这样的资讯是关键，能够愈早知道，扩散可能就不会这么严重。像伊朗，就有类似的情况又发生，”邹明祥认为，透明化、公开化，才有机会发挥集体智慧，加速找到疫情的解方。

政府管控讯息，除了审查，还有主动宣传。在美国生活的邹明祥指出，其实不只中国，美国官员遇上武汉肺炎，也曾以“口罩并不真的能防治新冠病毒”说法，试图降低民众抢购口罩的恐慌。他提醒，公共危机发生时，在公开资讯与避免群众恐慌之间如何取得平衡，常是决策者的挑战，但无论如何的前提是必须保护民众隐私。他以公布确诊病例的资讯为例，可以透露病例移动的路径纪录，但不能公开病例的住址、姓名等。

中共选择加强集体审查

疫情的治理，不只需要在一国之内，公开、透明地分享必要资讯，全球也是同理。邹明祥解释，“如果有特定区域、国家封锁资讯，没办法知道疫情的现况、起始点或来源，我们也没办法进一步得知传播效率、未来可能的预测模型的建立，没办法分析各地区的差异，找出影响疫情传播的条件。”

“如果资讯能够共享，人们集体在一起合作，做的决策会胜过寡头政治、精英政治，也许才会真的照顾大多数人的利益，”邹明祥说。

只是，受访当天，也是中国最严格网路管控法规《网络信息内容生态治理规定》正式生效的日子；加上“健康码”软体的实施，中共当局将民众健康资讯与警政系统相连，试图以新科技严格控制民众的言论与行动自由。

中国式的现代抗疫似乎决心与开放、透明反向而行。是否能控制疫情、杜绝下一次传染疾病发生，待时间证明；但确定的是，中国民众及全球对中国公共卫生资讯透明的期待，SARS之后再次失败。
