My two illustrations for the lovely MDZS fic Carry Me Anew written by @ashayatreldai for @pocketfulofrecs's MXTX Epic Journeys Big Bang Event 2022. Ashaya's prose is to die for—gorgeous writing through and through. I included snippets of the fic related to the art below!
Tumblr media
(Cover art for the fic! Here's the summary:)
In softest air, a stutter Steers the heart away from the bane Leaves the lasting sorrow and carries me anew In the aftermath of what happened in the Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen entered seclusion. Little did he know that playing through the Collection of Turmoil damaged his Core. To find the solution, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian undertake an epic journey to Lan An's temple - there to resolve an ancient dispute between the descendants of Baoshan Sanren and Lan An, to discover the cure for the Lan Clan Leader's trouble, and answers of hope for their own developing relationship and for Lan Xichen's own future. A story about love which waits centuries to be reunited with a beloved.
Tumblr media
Xichen looked up after pegging an outer robe to a bush. Today A-Yao had foregone a hat, and his hair shone lustrous in the morning sun. His breath caught in his throat: A-Yao’s porcelain skin glowed, his delicate features cast in a moment of divinity. Feeling warmth bloom in his cheeks, Xichen swiftly bent down to retrieve the now empty basket, and followed A-Yao towards the cottage. A-Yao went to open the door. Xichen placed his hand over A-Yao’s to still him, and watched as he turned, intending to… intending to…

It sure is chatty here, on the sword rack...
Consider for a moment... Baxia, the very much sentient and very very much opinioneated saber spirit. She just spends her whole day shit-talking everyone Nie Minjue talks to.
(If Suibian can seal itself, probably to inconvenience as many people as possible, Baxia can have loud opinions.)
Just image though - Nie Mingjue, newly-minted Sect Leader, trying to sit through a discussion conference while Baxia is providing a sass-filled running commentary. No-one is safe.
Better yet, this is not a Baxia-specific trait. All the swords are just running commentary the whole time and while cultivators can hear their own sword, one unlucky soul can hear all of them.
For maximum chaos, Yours Truly will name Wen Ning as said unfortunate soul. He is so polite and shy that he would pretend not to hear anything normally, but if he hears something alarming enough for one of his friends he would absolutely speak out. Also he once managed to drug an entire compound and not get caught so I think people underestimate how far he will go if he has too....
He slightly regrets having the ability when Suibian and Bichen start gossiping about their cultivators while Wen Ning is 3rd wheeling them.
But can you imagine the hilarity that would result when he gets so used to it that he no longer distinguishes between human and sword voices and he accidentally answers to something a sword said that he shouldn't have heard?
Or he maybe uses this ability deliberately. "Even so-and-so sword thinks this is a bad idea."
He accidentally gets into full conversations with the sword and its owner and everyone else is like, 'wtf?'
He also finds it increasingly difficult to keep a straight face during conferences, since all the swords are bitching together. And they all universally hate Sect Leader Yao. Sect leader Yao's sword has stopped making excuses years ago and is doing the spiritual equivalent of screaming on a pillow in dismay.
This of course raises the interesting question, does the sword's personality mirror or complement that of its cultivator? I can see the Jin sword being particularly stuck-up. Baxia is basically an unfiltered version of Nie Mingjue. Lan Qiren's sword is an absolute savage, especially when he's marking his students' work. Shuoyue is even sassier than Baxia and half of Lan Xichen's smirks are because of something she's said.
Or maybe it's partially at least influenced by the name. I am convinced that baby Wei Wuxian asked his sword what its name was and Suibian didn't have the heart to tell him he's supposed to name the blade so it told him "whatever" and that's how it stuck.
Also Bichen is absolutely Lan Wanji's anger translator and absolutely delighted when Jingyi comes along to add his own spin to the game of "what does Lan Wangji mean".

A postcanon Lan Xichen concept/minific (cw suicide attempt)
The last time anyone in the Cloud Recesses sees Lan Xichen alive is when he comes stumbling out of seclusion, robes in disarray, hair white as snow—and Shuoyue driven straight through his gut and out the other side. "I can't—" he says. "I already—"
It's Wei Wuxian who first realizes that they're not seeing Lan Xichen at all. "...Shuoyue?"
"Don't ask me to do this again," pleads the being who is not Lan Xichen.
___
"Shuoyue has grown tired of killing," explains Wei Wuxian. "And Shuoyue is a very powerful sword."
Right now, Shuoyue is all that is keeping Lan Xichen's body alive, but as for the state of Lan Xichen's soul, nobody can say. "Fix this," says Lan Wangji, and Wei Wuxian says, "I don't know if I can."
___
"It's not that I'm tired of killing," Shuoyue explains earnestly, still impaled on its own blade. "It's that a sword should not be asked to harm those whom it has sworn to protect. If this body were Nie Huaisang's, for example, everything would be fine."
___
"He's in the sword," Wei Wuxian realizes. "Shuoyue is the man and Xichen is the sword."
Lan Wangji looks into his brother's eyes. "Give him back," he says.
"I'm not the one who made him a weapon," says Shuoyue.
"But at any rate," says Wei Wuxian, "it should be perfectly safe to draw it out.”
The blade comes out clean. Shuoyue sheathes it, and hands the scabbard to Lan Wangji. “I have given him back,” he says.
___
Lan Wangji cannot draw him.
Wei Wuxian cannot draw him.
Shuoyue cannot draw him.
“Who do you think he trusts to wield him now?” Shuoyue asks.

Actually post canon lxc continually trying to do his job like "tomorrow I will start things on time. Tomorrow I will not need to pause for 2 minutes before responding to a question and then speak like I'm sleep talking. Tomorrow my limbs won't be so heavy. Tomorrow I will manage to do more than 3 things in a day. Tomorrow I will actually meditate instead of stare at a wall. Tomorrow I will remember my sword so I won't have to stand there in shame when a random disciple asks me, again, where shuoyue is. Today I couldn't but tomorrow I will because I have to. I have to." And he has been saying this to himself for years.

i fell in love with jin guangyao when he threw his hands up (metaphorically) at nie mingjue during the stair debacle and went "wow you really Cannot understand me. fine. i tried. skill issue"!! i thought it was so cool how neatly he dual-wielded justified terror, justified snark, and a sincere attempt at making himself understood. i guess that's triple-wielding, actually, but you get it
you’re right, i do get it, i get it so much. 🤝🤝🤝 that moment turned me into the unhinged jgy stan i am today.
Jin GuangYao sighed, “Brother, it really was my father’s orders. I couldn’t refuse. Now, if you want me to take care of Xue Yang, what would I say to him?”
Nie MingJue, “There’s no need for explanations. Come back to me with Xue Yang’s head in your hand.”
Jin GuangYao still wanted to speak, but Nie MingJue had already lost all patience, “Meng Yao, don’t speak such pretentious words in front of me. Your whole thing stopped working on me since a long time ago!”
Within a second, a few degrees of unease flashed over Jin GuangYao’s face, as though someone with an unmentionable illness was suddenly exposed in the public. There was nowhere for him to hide.
He spoke, “My whole thing? Which whole thing? Brother, you’ve always yelled at me for calculating people and being too dishonorable. You say that you’re a proud, righteous person, that you aren’t afraid of anything, that propen men shouldn’t need to play with schemes. That’s fine. Your background is noble and your cultivation is high. But what about me? Am I the same as you? First, my cultivation isn’t as firm as yours. Ever since I was born, has anyone taught me? And second, I have no prominent background. Do you think that I’m in a steady position, here at the LanlingJin Sect? Do you think that I can rise into power the moment Jin ZiXuan dies? Jin GuangShan would rather bring another illegitimate child back than want me to succeed him! You think that I should be afraid of nothing? Well I’m afraid of everything, even other people! He whose stomach is full believes not him who is starving.”
EXR translation, pg 498 & 499
then comes the part of the text where imo jgy is 100% aware of the fact that nmj is going to hear his words and choose the worst faith interpretation of them. this feels like one last moment to give nmj a chance to prove him wrong about what he knows inevitably is about to happen, and it has been quoted and discussed so many times that i don’t think i need to do so again. but i will add this moment too, because i don’t think jgy gets enough credit for the brutal, savage humour in this line, after he gets kicked down the stairs:
Jin GuangYao only landed after rolling down more than fifty steps. He didn’t even stay on the ground for long before crawling up. With a wave of his hand, he sent away the servants and disciples who surrounded him. Dusting off his robes, he slowly raised his head to look at Nie MingJue. His eyes were quite calm, almost indifferent. Just as Nie MingJue unsheathed his saber, Lan XiChen happened to leave the palace to see what was going on, concerned after having waited for long. Seeing the situation before him, he unsheathed Shuoyue as well, “What happened, this time?”
Jin GuangYao, “Nothing. Brother, thank you for your advice.”
EXR translation, pg 500

modern au 3zun and their favourite things to do with their pets!
I introduced them in an earlier post but if you need a refresher, Baxia is a semi-immortal maine coon, Shuoyue is a borzoi, and Hensheng is a miniature albino ball python. Mingjue found stray Baxia as a teen and she just… hasn’t aged since. Xichen adopted Shuoyue from a shelter when A-Fu was a toddler. Meng Yao insists he has zero interest in owning a snake, but when a shitty roommate disappeared and left her behind, he took care of her, intending to pass her on to someone who actually likes snakes and just… never got around to it.

Hello~ Happy new year everyone 🥳 I have two recs, these are fics that I read a while ago but still remember fondly. Especially the furby one, It is definitely one of the most unique fics I have ever read. @misscellophane-ao3
The Proposal
by LFMH021 (@heyimbeessie)
T, 93k, Wangxian
Summary: For the record, Wei Wuxian has always been an idiot when it comes to love. He can’t believe he wouldn’t have realized his feelings towards Lan Wangji until there is a threat that could take the latter away from him: a rival. “I wish to ask for your nephew’s hand for marriage.” Wei Wuxian couldn’t help his mouth, smirking, he whispers behind Lan Xichen, “How about it, Zewu-Jun? Is Young Master Gen up to your liking?” “Lan Wangji, Hanguang-Jun, Second Jade of Lan, I wish to declare my intentions on courting you,” Gen Lei adds, standing up and bowing lowly – tone shaking but sincere, his cheeks and ears flushed. “What?”
~*~
🧡 Song of Suibian and Bichen: Or, the Greatest (And Only) Furby Master of Demonic Cultivation
by moonwaif (@moonwaif)
T, 64k, Wangxian
Summary: “Young Master Wei,” Lan Qiren prompts, obviously ready to be done with this whole thing. “Have you decided what you will name your spiritual weapon?” Okay, so. Maybe Wei Wuxian actually is feeling a little sour. Knowing Zhan’er can hear him, he twirls the blade, saying offhand, “Whatever—anything’s fine.” Shuoyue makes a choking sound. Even Xuan Su nearly falls off his stack of pillows. Wei Wuxian grins. “Just kidding. I name him—” But it’s too late. Before he can finish speaking, 'Suibian' is already etched across the blade. Oops. In a world where cultivators and furbies bond together in order to manifest spiritual weapons, Wei Wuxian is matched with Zhan'er, a stodgy, stuck-up Lan sect furby who hates him. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji is matched with the irreverent Xianxian, a rogue furby who came down from the Immortal Mountain to do heroic deeds and have a good time. Can the four of them figure out a way to work together without driving each other up the wall? And what happens when the Wen sect attacks?

Longcheng / Dragon City - Xue Meng’s sword from 2ha
Since Xue Meng could not receive a holy weapon from Jincheng Lake, he used Longcheng, a high-quality scimitar from Taxue Palace. From what I remember, Mo Ran gifted him the Wangshu Crystal from the Carp Essence that was requested by Song Qiutong to help him cultivate/add to his sword, making it something similar to a “heavenly weapon.”

Hi! I read your posts about Su Daji, and I believe one of them were about her being the literal incarnate of the Moon Fox of the 28 mansions.
I was wondering if there's any lore surrounding the 28 mansions, and if there are any incarnates of them other than her
I more specifically wanted to know about the Moonbird of Net, but I wouldn't mind learning about the others!
Well, tiny correction: Su Daji is not the incarnate of the Heart Moon Fox, but Wu Zetian, China's one and only female emperor, is said Lunar Mansion incarnate in Flowers in the Mirror, a Qing dynasty novel.
In another Qing dynasty novel, Shuoyue Quanzhuan (说岳全传), the notoriously corrupt historical figure, Qin Hui's wife, was the Maiden Earth Bat (女土蝠) incarnate: having been killed by the Golden-winged Peng for farting during Buddha's lecture, she would take revenge on his reincarnation, the heroic general Yue Fei.
About the 28 Lunar Mansions themselves: originally, they are kinda like the Chinese equivalent of the 12 zodiac in western astronomy.
Like, think of the sky as a belt, divided into 4 quadrants, each quadrant containing a giant constellation that represents the Divine Beasts of the Four Directions: Azure Dragon(E), White Tiger(W), Vermillion Bird(S), Black Turtle(N).
Each of these giant constellations can then be broken down into 7 smaller stars/star clusters, corresponding to a section of the sky. They are used to mark the position of the moon during a given month, as well as determine the seasons via the sun's location in a given mansion.
Azure Dragon: 角(Jiao)、亢(Kang)、氐(Di)、房(Fang)、心(Xin)、尾(Wei)、箕(Ji)
White Tiger: 奎(Kui)、娄(Lou)、胃(Wei)、昴(Mao)、毕(Bi)、觜(Zi)、参(Shen)
Vermillion Bird: 斗(Dou)、牛(Niu)、女(Nv)、虚(Xu)、危(Wei)、室(Shi)、壁(Bi)
Black Turtle: 井(Jing)、鬼(Gui)、柳(Liu)、星(Xing)、张(Zhang)、翼(Yi)、轸(Zhen)
However, like many things astronomy, they were later appropriated by astrology and used in divinations, by assigning an element/phase and an animal to each of these stars, making them into the "Beast Stars" (禽星) who can faciliate or obstruct each other, with different implications on your best course of action that day.
Now, look back at the list above. Each vertical column is assigned an element, in this order: Wood, Metal, Earth, Sun, Moon, Fire, Water.
So Star Lord Mao of the White Tiger Quadrant would be the "Sun Rooster Star", Star Lord Xin of the Azure Dragon Quadrant would be the "Moon Fox Star", etc.
But wait, there is more! Outside of the Beast Star divination system, traditional Chinese astrology also viewed the starry sky as the Heavenly Emperor's palace, with each constellation representing an area/building/resident of said palace.
Following that line of thought, people in the Tang dynasty came up with a catchy poetic star catalogue, 步天歌("Song of the Sky Pacers"), in which the 28 Lunar Mansions are kinda like managers who watch over their own group of stellar officials.
And the big 4 quadrants they are part of? Well, they are like four departments, each with their own general themes.
These themes aren't absolute; for example, the Azure Dragon Quadrant represents the front gate all the way up to the main palace halls, so they have a lot of stellar officials in charge of chariots, gates and honor guards, but also...grain baskets.
As for the Moonbird of Net, a.k.a. Bi Yuewu the Moon Crow Star: well, ain't this the damnest coincidence, I actually had an old OC concept based on this very Lunar Mansion!
Bi the Moon Crow
In traditional Chinese astrology, the Bi star was the god of rain, the "Master Rain"(雨师) to the "Duke Wind"(风伯) of Ji star: it was believed that whenever the moon came near this star, there would be a huge storm.
Since the Grand Compendium of the Three Religions' Deities stated that "Master Rain" was actually a one-legged divine bird called Shang Yang, who first appeared in 孔子家语 as this little creature who'd dance before every downpour like a goofy weather forecast guy, I drew his Stellar Beast form as a one-legged crow.
(OC-specific stuff below, not mythos canon)
He is very skilled at creating cloud formations, to the point where he got "borrowed" by the Wind and Thunder Bureau more than some of the Water-aligned Lunar Mansions.
After the Havoc, he has also become the new guy in charge of the Peach Garden(one of the constellations falling under Bi's section of the sky is Tianyuan, the Celestial Garden).
Anyways, traditional Chinese astrology is super fascinating, and I've only gone into a tiny fraction of it here. Hope it helps, though!

Intro post
Hello. My name is Lan Huan, courtesy name Lan Xichen. He/him.
I understand most in this world do not have these customs, so please just refer to me as Xichen.
I do not hail from this world, although that seems to be very common here. It is for this reason that I have been told to attempt "blogging" on this "app".
...In my world, we do not have anything similar to this technology, and while we had magical beasts, they are nothing like these "Pokémon". I do not know why I am here, or how.
uhhh hello! i'm Lan Hong, courtesy name Lan Jingyi, just call me Jingyi. gender is Yes, use any pronouns!! i'm basically just following Zewu-jun around, i think i'll do the gym challenge though! i like food :)
Meng Yao, courtesy name Jin Guangyao, but please refer to me by my birth name. Lost a lot of memories. I am trying they/them.
LXC's Pokémon: Shuoyue (Prinplup, M) Aisheng (Golbat, F)
LJY's Pokémon: Sparky (Luxio, M) Rosie (Budew, F)
MY's Pokémon: Meihua (Togepi, F)
ooc under cut:
SO! Lan Xichen from MDZS. this is post-main story so he's a lil Fucked Up, and there will be implied spoilers. this will probably just be a casual blog, but i have plopped him in sinnoh, and he'll just be doing gyms, as it's post-platinum here goes nothing!
uhhh mod is a minor, please just be respectful in general? anyone is welcome to interact :p
(added jingyi because chaos gremlin good,,,,) (also added jgy because i thought it'd be funny ksjdfkshfds)
right now Wen Qing is hanging around, she’s a doctor and will type in red text
oh and for people without context, Xichen also has a title, which is Zewu-jun. Jin Guangyao also has a title, which less people will probably use, but it’s Lianfang-zun
so it was pissing me off that both jgy and lxc had birth names but my poor boy ljy didn’t, so i gave him one! it means red :3 (so his whole name means blue red lmao)

Lan Xichen jumped off Shuoyue, trying to get down where he had seen the flash of gray amongst the green forest as soon as possible.
"Nie Huaisang?" The younger Sect Leader was curled up, breathing heavily like he had been the one fighting off the yao instead of Lan Xichen. He whined, and Lan Xichen dropped onto his knees to gather him in his hands.
How could he let this happen to A-Sang?!
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry," Nie Huaisang whined, folding into himself as if he wanted to take the least amount of space he could.
"No, no, it wasn't your fault! I should have paid more attention to you!" He pulled the younger cultivator closer, warming up his almost frozen body.
"I can't do anything right," Nie Huaisang sobbed. "I'm sorry, I ruined- I'm not worthy- I... I'm sorry!" The young man in his arms looked so pale, so distressed, it broke Lan Xichen's heart.
"What? No! A-Sang, you are so good! It is my fault for not paying more attention to you! It is my fault that I took you here instead of staying in your room as I promised you!"
"You don't mean that," Huaisang sobbed, "I don't deserve you, I don't deserve to be a Sect Leader, I don't deserve anything good! I always mess up everything! Da-ge's right, I'm not good enough. I'll never be good enough!" He tried to move, he tried to hide, but Lan Xichen didn't let him go. There was no way he could let him go.
"A-Sang," the Lan Sect Leader whispered, heartbroken and desperate. How could he think like this?! Nie Huaisang was so precious, so lovely and the only person the Nie Clan would ever accept as their Sect Leader after Nie Mingjue. He was loved and adored and they - all of them - did something very wrong if he thought otherwise.
"Nobody wants me, nobody even likes me," he muttered, miserable.
Lan Xichen was shocked. He never- nobody who knew A-Sang and wasn't jealous of him ever thought of him as unlikable. He had some difficulties with accepting his new role after Nie Mingjue's sudden death, sure, but he was so good! He knew when he needed support, and he helped his people so much! Knowing how to delegate was an important part of being a leader, and even if he couldn't handle things himself, he chose the right people to do in his stead.
He was liked. He was loved. He was wanted.
"No, A-Sang, that's so not true!" He slipped an arm around Nie Huaisang, ready to carry him home. "You are loved. You are loved so much, and I'm here to tell you. Always. I've got you," he murmured into A-Sang's ear. The younger cultivator was whimpering, eyes moving rapidly behind his eyelids, and Lan Xichen was afraid that the gas the monster spewed affected Nie Huaisang more than "just" bringing forward his fears.
"'m not...," the Nie mumbled, his bottom lip trembling, tears sliding down his cheeks. Lan Xichen wanted to kiss them away, he wanted to give the world to Nie Huaisang, but first, he had to take them home, safely.
Standing up with his precious cargo in his arms, protected and loved, he said, "You are so good! This is only the monster's power talking. You are loved and I will do anything in my power to show it to you how much people care for you."
The fierce protectiveness he felt towards Nie Huaisang was nothing new. He adored him ever since the first time he saw the tiny little boy with huge eyes peeking out from behind his much bigger Da-ge, so cute and curious. He loved him since the first time A-Sang dragged him to his aviary, showing him all the pretty birds he patiently cared for. He had been in love with him since his first time in Cloud Recesses, where he had been so lively and mischievous, always getting up to no good, yet always managing to avert the attention from himself. He had been protective over him ever since they were children, and he knew it was never going to change. Not his want to protect him, nor his need to make sure nothing and nobody could ever hurt him.
He softly crooned as Shuoyue flew them towards the Unclean Realm, until the sobbing stopped and Nie Huaisang's breathing evened out. It didn't take long to reach the fortress, Lan Xichen hurrying to make sure his beloved was safe amongst his people, warm and comfortable in his room.
"I have you. No one can hurt you, not anymore. I will protect you, I will keep you safe," he promised to the sleeping man, his fingers tightening on the slack body.
"L'Huan..." Nie Huaisang mumbled his name as they finally arrived to Nie Huaisang's room with the help of the worried Nie disciplines who made sure they would get to there uninterrupted, trusting that Lan Xichen would protect their leader.
"Sssh," he shushed the sleeping man, "I'm here."
"Don't leave me," he whined, his slender, yet strong arms dragging Lan Xichen down into the bed, so he could cuddle up to him, while still sleeping. "Love you. Please, don't leave me alone. I'm so lonely."
The confession broke something in Lan Xichen. He stared at him for a while, his previously abandoned wishes and ideas came back with tripled force, knowing that what he was going to do was selfish, but he didn't care. He only cared about Nie Huaisang. And if he wanted Lan Xichen to stay with him? He would stay with him.
"I love you too, A-Sang. I love you and I'm not leaving you. Never again."

You guys know that trope in which one character finds their loved one tortured and displayed in a room, dead or dying, with hands chained to a wall/the ceiling, bruised and bleeding, barely breathing (if at all), eyes hollow and distant?
Mdzs canon divergence AU in which WWX gives himself up instead of allowing the Wen siblings to do so, and he is given in the custody of the Jins. He is tortured and humiliated most of the time, and when he is not, he is forced to be his own subject for various experiments with the stygian tiger amulet that JGS orders.
LWJ finds this out, manages to convince LXC to visit Yiling and vouch for the Wen remnants and WWX, but the politics take too long and LWJ decides to storm Jinlintai for WWX himself.
He finds WWX in that horrible state, more dead than alive, frees his hands and lets his body fall into his arms, intent on running into the Burial Mounds and then away, as far as possible.
But JGS and JGY (with a desperate LXC in their stead) find LWJ, and order their guards and cultivators to take them prisoners and kill WWX (LXC managed to convince them to leave LWJ to the Lan sect).
LWJ doesn't stand down.
At the end of the fight, there are only three people still alive in that room. LWJ, LXC and WWX (barely).
"Step aside, brother."
"Don't do this, Wangji."
"I will not ask again."
"The world will hunt you down, both of you. All of you. Please, Wangji, don't do this, don't make me do this."
LWJ's hand grips onto Bichen's hilt, righting the sword into fighting position. "You are my closest living family member. I do not wish to hurt you. And though I said I would not, I am asking you again - step aside."
Shuoyue glints in LXC's hand, tears glint in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Wangji."
"I am, too."
