Looking for Danmei Blogs to Follow
There is a severe lack of danmei content on my dashboard. Please like/reblog this post if you post anything about danmei, but especially if it's about these kind of novels:
unlimited flow / survival games
horror / thriller
mystery
sci-fi (and I don't mean interstellar)
supernatural (especially if it's set in modern times)
Anything is fine really, as long as it's not world-hopping and/or harem 😩
If you're a novel-specific blog, like/reblog this post as well if it's about any of the following:
MXTX novels (especially TGCF and SVSSS. Do not interact if you're a Jiang Cheng/Mu Qing hater though and post a lot about CQL)
Xi He Qing Ling novels (Assistant Architect, The Perfect Relationship, etc.)
188 novels (especially Years of Intoxication and Blazing Armor)
other dog blood novels (the genre, not actual animal blood)
I Became a God in a Horror Game
Fourth Perspective
Happy Doomsday
Si Tian Guan
any novel listed under my Favorites/Close Favorites list.
I know there isn't much of a danmei fandom here on Tumblr outside of MXTX, 2HA, Priest, and the other mainstreams, but I am desperate okay?

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of May 7, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.
There is a list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates, and a similar list on Goodreads. Both look fairly up to date to me. Here's another danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.
-
Seven Seas:
The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.
These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats.

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask.
These titles are only being released as print editions.
Eta: titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions.

The full list of danmei novels licensed by Via Lactea is here.

-
Monogatari Novels:
It is unclear to me if Monogatari Novel titles are available for world-wide distribution, but there are group orders being organized or I think they can be ordered directly from their webpage; they are based in Spain. These titles can also be ordered from at least some major retailers. Note that there has been some controversy about Monogatari Novels.
BAIHE: A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (Jing Wei Qing Shang) by Please Don't Laugh
BAIHE: Female General and Eldest Princess (NuJiangjun he Zhang Gongzhu) by Please Don't Laugh
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
The Silent Concubine (Ya Nu) by Qiang Tang
BAIHE: Soulmate manhua by Wenzhi Lizi
-
Aloha Comics:
A tiny, Hawaii-based press focusing on manhua. Titles appear to primarily be available through Diamond Comics. There are also pre-orders on Yiggybean. All of these are pre-orders, though the earliest are coming out by the end of April 2024 (about two weeks after when I'm posting this).
All these titles are manhua!
Day Off by Qing Cai
Here U Are by DJUN
Link Click by Li Haoling and Haoliners (not technically danmei!)
Nirvana in Fire (Lang Ya Bang) by Hai Yan (not technically danmei!)
-
Chaleuria:
As far as I can tell, Chaleuria has not updated their webpage since April 2023, so the current status of in-progress titles is unknown. All titles are digital and/or e-book, and I'm not sure how to purchase them as I haven't tried.
Complete Guide to the Use and Care of a Personal Assistant (Zhuli Shiyong Zhinan) by Why Radiance
Deep in the Act (Ru Xi) by Tongzi
Fake Slackers (Wei Zhuang Xue Zha) by Mu Gua Huang (no longer available)

Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits (Dushi Yaogui Lu) by Qie Er
World Hopping: Avenge Our Love (Ni Wufa Yuliao de Fenshou, Wo Du Neng Gei Ni Song Shang) by Xiaomao Bu Ai Jiao (no longer available)
-
Webnovel:
When I first made this list, I heard that Webnovel had a few titles but couldn't actually find them - but now I've found them, thanks to a list someone else put together. I'm including direct links to them, since I had so much trouble finding them at all.
Comrade: Almost a Cat-astrophic Love Story (Jintian ye Yao Nuli Dang Zhimao) by Demonic Fire (link)
My Boyfriend is a Dragon (Nanpiao Shi Tiaolong) by Chubby Strawberry Sauce (link)
The National Sweetheart Livestreamer is a Pro! (Quanmin Zhubo Shi Duiba) by Mo Shang Wang (link)
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL
@userdramas event 01 favourite ✧ 2022 release @userphotoshop event 7 genres ✦ romance ➻ arcs and names are self-coined + name explanations below cut
初逢 (chū féng) for episodes 1-9 (shui yun tian arc): “first meeting”
望月 (wàng yuè) for episodes 10-19 (cang yan hai arc): one way to say “full moon”, literally means “to look up at the moon”
梦蝶 (mèng dié) for episodes 19-26 (human realm arc): “butterfly dream”. A reference to Zhuang Zhou’s (philosopher from the Warring States era) Dream of the Butterfly: where he once dreamed that he was a butterfly and was very happy and carefree, with no knowledge that he was Zhuang Zhou, but upon waking up, he didn’t know if he was Zhuang Zhou dreaming he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuang Zhou. It’s related to the philosophical questions of the difference between reality and dreaming, and the whole nature of our reality to name a few - think Matrix, think Westworld. This arc name came automatically to me for the human realm arc especially since the human realm in the show is called 云梦泽 (yún mèng zé) “Lake of Clouds and Dreams”, and the whole arc is about the human realm and their lives there being a complete façade. Additionally, the scene of human!CDNZ dancing is FULL of butterfly motifs.
兰花一现 (lán huā yī xiàn) for episodes 26-31 (return to cang yan hai arc): a pun on the idiom 昙花一现 (tán huā yī xiàn), where 昙花 “queen of the night” (a species of cactus that blooms very rarely, and when it does, only does so and night and wilts at dawn) is replaced with 兰花 “orchid”; 昙 and 兰 rhyme in Mandarin Chinese. The original idiom means that good and beautiful things after appearing for a moment, do not last long and disappear completely. A reference to XLH trying to prove herself worthy of being the Moon Queen and also wanting to stop the war (“let the wheels of hate roll over me”) and ending up sacrificing herself.
忍顾鹊桥归路 (rěn gù què qiáo guī lù) for episodes 32-36 (goddess of xishan arc): “when we part and return our separate ways, we can’t help but gaze back at the magpie bridge”. A line by Song Dynasty poet Qin Guan about the Cowherd and immortal Weaver Girl. It is about the Qixi Festival (the seventh day of the seventh lunar month), when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, banished to the opposite sides of the Milky Way for their forbidden love, are allowed to reunite for one day, meeting again on a bridge formed of magpies. A reference to the star-crossed love between DFQC and XLH, and also that scene with the bridge that made me cry like a water fountain.

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

ShuiZhu ( main lmk oc )
水珠 ( water pearl )
she/her // bisexual
names / nickname:
ao Shui / shui zhu
{ water girl / titan mermaid / goddess of the ocean / sea witch / fan girl2.0 / the pearl keeper }
backstory:
Ao guang found a giant clam created by nüwa with her inside and then raised her as his daughter since no one else wanted to accept her though some other dragons didnt like her at all except the dragon attendant she got used to her.
once almost injured one of her dragon brothers Ao jiao and almost killed her in a act of revenge luckily Ao guang broke the fight. Ao bing the attendant and Nezha are the only ones she got along well with
secretly went up to the surface multiple times and became best friends with Nezha when she saw him playing alone. they became jianzi duos and explored the ocean for treasures together. Ao guang then gave her a bladed fan that can change its size for safety.
as Shui grew more attached to the oceans beauty and powerful nature she somehow gained water powers because of it. she may have destroyed a few buildings but it wasnt severe but she once made a whirlpool killing many fishermen on accident and they wanted to execute her though Ao guang was angered shui cannot help but plead for him to spare the humans
the large village the fishermen lived ended up getting invaded by demons.when they found shui they invited her to be "apart" of they're family which she declined and continued causing havoc amongst the village..the humans may hate her but she wants to save them so she gave her limbs and life to the demons and the only thing left is her head the pool of water her body evaporated into and her blood with her head in Ao guangs arms
then Ao guang had asked the jade emperor to bring her back from the dead and he agreed but it would take 200 years to reborn her new body and erase the trauma she experienced but her happy moments.
then when she grew up her aquatic esque ears started to get more bigger with small scales on her back and the heavens decided to give her the role of the goddess of the sea and fish ( or just any sea creature ) but ao guang didnt want her to go in fear of loosing his own child again but shui promised that every year she would visit for 4 days.then she made a pearl balancing both land and sea from disasters making peace ( wukong tried to steal it when the brotherhood still existed )but though she ascended to divinity she must learn how on how to control her powers so guan yin offered shui to be her student or sometimes when guan yin is busy and Nezha has free time he can help her learn even though water isnt his element despite the fact they had been separated for so long they're bond still stands strong yet it took almost 100 years for them to develop into adults
when shui returned to the mortal realm the first thing she does is to tend the graves of the fishermen she had killed on accident from guilt and then visit Ao guang
( most of the time she visits Nezha hangs out with him and helps him with keeping the map safe growing water lilies and often meditate together )
ship name: Lotuswave
despite Ao jia being extremely mean to her when she was a child they actually dont mean it in fact they were just strict they try there best to be good brothers after her death
powers:
water clones ( her water clones are similar to macaque but much faster than his. the clones cant evaporate but rather when something tries to attack it the attacks go through her clones
liquidkinesis ( most of the time she uses water to attack or make random shapes in a brutal way she can do the same with blood and maybe explode it in someones body but rarely does that )
bladed fan ( her fans were given by Ao guang for protection and to block attacks. her fans can shapeshift into a bigger size but cant get smaller. she can also make tsunamis with it by making it bigger and swinging it in the most aggressive way possible )
shapeshift ( she cant shapeshift into anything but only has two forms her full fish form is made from heavenly water and often swims with other fish groups and the second one has the appearance of a water mermaid. her fish form is smaller than the second one and the second is bigger than Nezhas monster form it even grants her mind reading capabilities
often dreams of becoming a dragon someday or having another form that is a dragon and not a fish so she would feel like shes apart of the dragon family
her water hair cannot get evaporated but can change the temperature based on her emotions for example her hair can actually boil when shes mad but it doesnt hurt her or the person touching it.its just hot

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
Gonna yoink a tag from @profiterole-reads on this meme.
3 ships you like:
Hua Cheng/Xie Lian (Tian Guan Ci Fu)
Liu Tongyi/Jing Chengjun (The Imperial Uncle)
Mo Ran/Chu Wanning (The Husky and His White Cat Shizun)
First Ship Ever: uh I guess it depends on definitions, probably Min Farshaw/Rand al'Thor (Wheel of Time)? But they're canon so maybe that doesn't count. So, hmm... Lina Inverse/Gourry Gabriev (Slayers) or Yuuki Miaka/Nuriko (Fushigi Yuugi; tho really I just supported Miaka harem rights, she deserved all those bishies at once) are ones I can remember from high school that aren't canon (tho Lina/Gourry kinda sorta is? it's canon adjacent at least...)
Last Song You Heard: Honey Magnolia by Brian Fallon was the last song in my car yesterday afternoon. One of my favorite songs, the first year I heard it, it was my most-listened to track of the year.
youtube
Currently Reading:
Salad Days by Jing Shui Bian
Copper Coins by Mu Su Li

storm season | yautja fanfic
A/N: not me making a predator side blog 🙈 anyways, here’s a short story with a couple yautja ocs i have.
summary: she finds it harder to deal. then everything changes.
word count: 1,713
content: angst, infertility, child loss (stillbirth, miscarriage, SIDS), grief, implied smut, mating season, heats/ruts, mentioned pregnancy, implied childbirth, unrequited love (😳?), happy ending
It’s become more and more difficult to ignore the pain. She used to be able to get over it, to continue as she is meant to. Yautja do not spend their lives wallowing over loss. They cannot be rendered stagnant because of death. They are not a species that grieves.
But the ache lingers after each unfruitful pregnancy. With every stillborn she is forced to burn upon a funerary pyre, the more the ache grows. She can no longer ignore the ashes of her lost pups. It haunts her like bhu’ja on Chiva n’ithya.
Paya will sometimes grant her a breathing pup— Nan’ku. She will treasure it. She will pour everything she has into it. She will be happy.
And in a devastating blow, Paya will be cruel and invite The Black Hunter to take her pup away.
Three times she has awoken to a lifeless pup in a nest. Three times The Black Hunter has invaded her home and stripped her of her blood. She is left cold each time. She burns more fires. She digs more graves. The pain festers.
Sometimes, when she is swallowed within herself, she wonders what she’s done to lose Paya’s blessing. She wonders why it must be her pups.
To spare herself, she hunts— Fast, hard, unforgiving. She takes trophy after trophy, mounts more and more th’syra on her walls until they overflow. Her weapons drip blood for days. It does nothing to distract her from the pain.
Occasionally, she hunts reckless and wild— blinded by the pain. She hunts until she is almost killed, until she nearly meets The Black Hunter herself. Paya is not as indifferent to her as she thinks. She survives every time. The pain does not leave.
Mating season comes again. It has not been welcome for decades.
Being as old as she is, her heat has become more tolerable over the years. It no longer controls her as it once did, when she was younger and more inclined to indulge. Thankfully.
However, there is always a male. This time, it is a dewy-eyed, dusky one with tresses gray like storm clouds— Older, most likely an Elite. He pursues her for months, delivers her th’syra and bests every other male that dares approach her. His tenacity impresses her, but it’s for naught.
He must not know her reputation. There were only two that challenged him: Youngbloods that didn’t know any better.
When he finally accosts her, she fights like she always had— All claws and fang, growling and bellowing, and ravaging. Making his rut as difficult as possible. It is in her blood to resist, to meet his challenge, to test to see if he is worthy of siring her pup.
The male proves himself. He may be two noks shorter than she is, but what he lacks in height he makes up for in the strength of his burly arms and legs. He manages to pin her, to bade her to submit. She does. He ruts her, his dia-shui is sweet.
He roars when he spills his seed, and she whickers. The male above her dismounts and collects himself. Wetness drips from her core. They do not speak. Outside her yurt, the sky is dark— than-guan. When she looks at him, the dusky male looks like halkrath, but his tresses glow like the luar-ke.
“You’ve wasted your time, male. My womb will bear you no pup.” She snarls, bitter, and the liquid heat of his spend between her legs reminds her of the pain, “Be it by miscarriage or pyode thei-de.”
The male hums, mandibles clicking together as he dons his awu’asa. When he finishes, he holds his syra’yte awu’asa in his paws. He doesn’t put it on. She meets his dewy, liquid gold gaze. His pupils are black holes.
“Every pup I’ve sired has passed before their Chiva. I have checked.” He clicks, stormy tresses fall over his shoulder when he tilts his head. He wears silver bands around them. They remind her of rain drops.
“They meet Cetanu and yet you still try?” She knows calling him by his name draws his attention but she doesn’t care. She’s been trying to lure him for years. All she wants are answers.
“It’s all I can do, female.” He replies simply, and places his syra’yte awu’asa over his face. Vaguely, she doesn’t like how the cold black visor hides his molten eyes.
“What is your name?” She asks the dusky warrior as he’s about to leave her abode for good. He pauses in the doorway, regards her with clicking of his mandibles.
“I am called Rath’ju-dha.” He replies, respectfully dipping his head and pounding a fist against his chest. She preens. Males worship females. Then he makes a mistake and asks, “And you?”
She debates beating him over the head, but withholds. Her bed of furs is soft and tempts sleep. She also does not wish to bleed upon her nest.
“Ni’ja. Do not be presumptuous.” The male doesn’t heed her threat and only clicks in mirth. And then he leaves, vanishing into the halkrath. She stares at the empty threshold. They will never meet again.
Pregnancy results from her mating. Every day of gestation she expects to lose it, to feel the pains in her womb that signal expulsion. When she reaches childbed, the pup emerges bloody and wailing. She braces. She does not sleep through the night. She anticipates a cold nest.
The pup lives past the point in which his other siblings had not. She watches as he grows big and curious. His favorite activity is digging. He has his sire’s eyes: Dewy gold. Healthy. The pain isn’t as strong anymore.
“Pup.” She scolds, beckoning Nan’kuare back to her side. He jolts up from where he digs in the underbrush, rushing to her on too-small legs that can only carry him so fast. She tugs on his pitch black tresses and he whines, clicking and whickering.
“Do not wander from me." Ni'ja scolds, turning her attention back to the th'syra she is polishing. Nan'kuare babbles something that she can't even begin to comprehend. His grasp on language is quite slim.
Nan’kuare plays at her feet, digging holes around her as if he wishes to trap her. The entire time, he clicks and whickers and says words vaguely. Ni’ja knows it’s all gibberish, but she never wants him to stop.
Hours pass, and Ni’ja has cleaned all her th’syra. Nan’kuare has stopped playing hours ago and dozes on her lap. She looks down, and he has slumped against her midriff. The weight of his tiny body is warm.
“Pup.” She says, and her son blinks awake. He looks up at her, bleary-eyed, and chitters. Ni’ja stands, hoisting Nan’kuare onto her hip.
“It is time to eat.” She says, and Nan’kuare trills happily, mandibles clicking in excitement. Aside from digging, his other favorite activity is eating. Ni’ja gives him small cuts of meat and berries squashed into a mush. Nan’kuare whines for more.
Ni’ja finds herself once again astounded by such a small thing’s appetite. She, of course, relents. He eats every bite.
The next mating season rolls around. Ni’ja doesn’t feel her heat, not while she has such a small pup to care for.
However, there is always a male. Usually, they know better. It is unwise for a male to pursue a female with a pup. The female will tear him limb from limb.
However, the dewy-eyed, dusky warrior does not seem to care. Ni’ja can recognize his cloudy tresses and lava eyes from a mile away. His scent carries on the wind.
“Insolent male!” She roars at him when he turns up at the door of her yurt. He has the gall to chitter at her— Bemused and not apologetic in the slightest. Ni’ja is infuriated.
“I have come to meet my pup.” He replies simply, parrying a swipe from Ni’ja’s claws. She snarls, straightening to her full height that has intimidated Yautja before. The male does not keel.
“Rath’ju-dha.” Ni’ja growls, crossing her arms over her chest. In her yurt behind her, Nan’kuare is eating berries. He has never really paid mind to guests anyhow.
“Ni’ja.” Rath’ju-dha says, dipping his head and pounding a fist on his chest. She preens at the respect, again. Nan’kuare looks up at the sound of his mother’s name on a male’s tongue.
Ni’ja allows Rath’ju-dha in.
True to his word, he wanted to confirm that Nan’kuare is the pup he sired. Side by side, Ni’ja internally concedes that they have the same eyes, as well as similar coloring. She will never confess that seeing Rath’ju-dha in her pup’s eyes brings her warmth.
Nan’kuare doesn’t quite understand Rath’ju-dha’s presence, so he hisses at the foreign male. Ni’ja chitters in amusement. Her pup swats at Rath’ju-dha when he attempts to approach him. Good pup.
It does not phase the male. He only shakes his luar-ke tresses and clicks at the tiny thing. His golden eyes are bright. He is happy.
“How does he fare? Is he strong?” Rath’ju-dha asks as he takes his leave, standing in the doorway like he did all those years ago. Only this time, the sun illuminates him like a beacon to the homeland.
“Of course, male. Nan’kuare is strong.” Ni’ja snorts, offended. How dare this male question her pup’s fortitude. She crosses her arms over her chest. Nan’kuare plays at her feet, tiny paws grasping at her ankles. He whickers incoherently.
“He brings me yin’tekai.” Rath’ju-dha murmurs, and dips his head again whole holding his fist directly above his heart. Ni’ja is taken aback by his dignity. She is pleased with his reverence to her.
Ni’ja also agrees. Nan’kuare brings her honor as well.
“N’dhi-ja.” Rath’ju-dha leaves when Ni’ja gestures for him to go. His molten eyes catch Nan’kuare again. Then the male turns on his heel, stormy tresses swinging, and Ni’ja watches him leave her yurt.
He disappears over the horizon, in the blurry haze of the jungle’s mirage. Ni’ja wishes his lightning eyes, thunder tresses, and rain drop silvers well. They will never meet again.
Ni’ja glances down at her pup, and Nan’kuare looks up at her. His dewy, golden eyes stare wide-eyed into hers. His pupils are black holes.
She forgets the pain.

Do you think the dragons-in-training (Chase, Dashi, Guan, Omi, Kimiko, Clay, Raimundo, but possibly including Jack, Jermaine, and Keiko in your AU too) ever wished they had a different element than the one they have?
If they have, which element would they specifically wish they had?
Me personally, I think that either whatever happened with that doll, Kimiko wished her element was anything but fire for a while. And I feel like as a surfer, Raimundo probably wished he could directly control the waves for a bit.
Ohhhh I definitely think some of them do!
For the actual cast I think you are right about Kimiko and Raimundo. I think Raimundo is happy with his wind ability over all but every so often thinks about how much better surfing would be with water abilities. But then he remembers he can fly and gets over it 🤣
I think Kimiko definitely has some trauma with her element that we really don’t see explored enough in the OG series and I think a part of her really wants an element that she feels isn’t so dangerous or destructive. I think she really envies Earth out of all of the options they have been introduced to.
Omi has and still does want to have ALL the elements! If he could he would be a dragon of each and every one! He would be very powerful that way!! And while ‘Wu got the Power’ made him a little more hesitant and careful with pursuing his want to use all the other elements, that want is very much still there. (He wouldn’t trade his water ability for anything though. If given the option of ‘this or that’s he would keep his water)
Clay is happy with his element and while he appreciates all of his friends elemental abilities he is happy with the element he got!
For the OG dragons:
Chase is similar to Omi in that he very much wanted to (and eventually got to) control every element. He definitely tried his hand at both Guan and Dashi’s styles in hopes of gaining control over their elements with no success. Just like Omi though he definitely thought that water was the best element there was (and told others often that it was) so he never wanted to trade it away.
Dashi didn’t want any of this. He wanted to sleep. If he got to choose he would have no elemental abilities! Fate just really didn’t like this man and now. Here he is. ‘Grandmaster’ Dashi. Giving out feng shui advice to the masses…
Guan wasn’t too sure what element he wanted for himself, all he knew was he wanted an element that was impressive enough to make his family proud and give him increased status. Sadly no element would ever truly have been good enough for his family so Earth was…fine.
For the AU kids:
Keiko likes lighting and thinks she could have gotten worse (at least she didn’t get earth or air!) but she also thinks that maybe wood would have been pretty cool to get…but over all she is pretty happy with lighting and the light shows she gets to put on with it!
Jermaine thinks that metal would have been a better option for him. He just doesn’t know much about gardening or anything like that having grown up in New York surrounded by mostly concrete and metal. He just doesn’t feel all that connected to his element (yet).
Jack is really happy with his element. He thinks it’s the best one there is and he definitely got the best of the lot! Just look at all the cool things he can make that the other losers can’t! Robot army here he comes!! (Don’t worry it’s a robot army of good this time 🤣)
