Katsuki takes you home.

Part Two

You sat in the passenger seat of Katsuki's car in a daze. You hadn't expected to spend just a little over an hour at the party. But- after being left behind by Denki, your party spirit had vanished.

Even after all the flirting from Denki making you feel special, he had quickly left you alone to talk to other girls at the party. The hurt still stung- but at least you'd be home soon.

"Cut it out," Katsuki huffed, as he drove down the road.

"Hu?" You mumbled, confused, and taken out of your thoughts.

"I told you to forget him- so stop looking so damn pathetic," he replied.

"Well, geez I'm fucking sorry my pain is such an inconvenience to you. It's not that easy to get over you know," You replied harshly. It wasn't like you were moping around on purpose. The events just happened moments ago, and it would take a bit longer than a few minutes to extinguish the crush you'd had on Denki for months now. Especially, after all the attention he gave you that made it seem like he felt the same way.

"Yeah, it is- there isn't anything special about dunce face. There are a ton of run-of-the-mill heroes running around just like him," Katsuki said.

"What!? How could you say that about your friend? Kaminari is special! I don't think I've met anyone else that could make me laugh like he could," you said solemnly, reminiscing on memories with Denki.

"A damn TikToc video can make you laugh- so there. He's not that irreplaceable. You'll be fine," Katsuki said and pulled into a gas station.

"You need gas?" You asked, changing the subject.

"Nah," he said, parking outside the convenience store attached to the gas station.

"Then what did you stop for?"

"To get ya some fucking ice cream or something- isn't that the protocol for break ups or- whatever this is?"

You stared at Katsuki shocked. You hadn't expected a kind gesture from him.

"Don't look at me that way!" he said, flustered by the doe eyes you gave him. "Do you want some or not?!"

His raised voice gave you a startle, "I actually would prefer some Hot Cheetos," you answered.

"Those are unhealthy as shit but- I'll allow it since you're sad and... those are spicy so- I respect it," he said and got out of the car. "I'll be right back, just stay here and put your address in the navigation while I'm gone," he said, shutting his door and making his way inside.

You typed your address in and then watched through the window as Katsuki wandered around the brightly lit convince store picking out your chips and paying at the counter. As you watched, you couldn't help but notice how the bright lighting accentuated his features. He definitely wasn't ugly. Your phone buzzed bringing you out of your trance.

It was a message from Denki.

Hey! Where'd ya go cutie?

You stared at your phone, unsure of what to do. Did he miss you? Why was he messaging you now?

The car door opened, and before Katsuki could think to speak, you were at him with panicked words.

"Denki texted me! What do I do?!" You asked, waving your phone in his face.

Katsuki scrunched up his nose and swatted at your phone, "I don't give a damn what you do," he replied bluntly and threw the chips in your lap.

"Why would he text me though?! He was flirting with that other girl!" You said in dismay.

"Probably wasn't getting lucky with her- so now he's back to trying with you," Katsuki said without thinking how that answer would upset you.

Your mouth hung open, "Are you serious?" you questioned, eyes full of sorrow.

"Tch- if you look any more like a damsel in distress, I'm kicking you out of this car!" Katsuki said annoyed, as he started the car up and began to drive to your place.

Your phone began to ring, "Oh crap, he's calling me!" You said alarmed. "What do I do?!"

Katsuki just gave you an irritated look that said all you needed to know. He was fed up with the situation.

You answered and brought the phone up to your ear, "Hey..."

"Hey! I've been looking everywhere for you! Where did you run off to?" Denki's voice sang on the other line. It hurt to hear his voice so cheerful, you would have loved to hear that sentence if you didn't know what you knew now.

"I uh- I left," You mumbled back into the phone.

"Left!? No way- I would have taken you home cutie! Did Mina drop you off or something?" He asked innocently.

"Uh no- Bakugo is taking me home," you answered.

"What..." Denki said flatly- his demeanor completely changed. All the sweetness in his voice had run dry.

"Yeah- I uh... wasn't feeling good- and you know he was sober so- he's driving me home." You answered.

"Mhm," Denki grunted pointedly into the phone.

"I hope you have fun though- I'll talk to you later, ok!" You said nervously into the phone.

"Wait-!" Denki yelled, but you had already ended the call.

Katsuki chuckled, "How did he take that information?"

"I don't know... I don't think I've ever heard him sound like that before... he sounded mad," you replied.

"Hah- don't think too much of it, idiot is getting what he deserves. To be alone," Katsuki exclaimed.

A notification dinged and came up on the screen in Katsuki's car- his text messages were synced to the dash. You leaned over to see it was from Denki. Denki had texted Katsuki-

The hell you doing man?

Katuski's eyes grazed the message, then focused back on the road.

"He texted you," you said stating the obvious hoping Katsuki would say something.

"Course he did- he'll do it again too," He responded.

Just as Katsuki predicted, another message came in from Denki.

Bring her back dude. That's not fair I had dibs.

"Dibs?! What the fuck does that mean?!" You said, snapping your eyes to Katsuki- furry now bubbling in your stomach.

Katsuki just sighed in frustration, "Told you- to forget him. Didn't I?"

"Wait-... is that why you're taking me home?! You're just trying to get lucky too?!" You accused Katsuki.

"The fuck!? Of course not! I'm not some damn perv like spark plug! Accuse me of that again and I'll kick your ass out little shit," Katsuki barked.

You looked out the window feeling slightly embarrassed, "I'm sorry.... I just don't know what to think anymore."

"Look- Kaminari's been feeling really big-headed since graduating being a pro hero and what not- so... he's probably not going to be settling down anytime soon. Do you get it now? Or do I need to spell it out for you even more?" Katsuki asked, stealing a glance at you looking out the window.

You sniffed and failed at holding back tears. You got the message loud and clear now.

"Fuck... don't do that- don't cry about it," Katsuki said.

You wiped your tears on your sleeve bringing in another big sniff, "I'm not-," You lied. "But... what do I do now Bakugo?"

"The hell do you mean? Just live your life- you'll forget about him- and eat your damn Hot Cheetos-," Katsuki suggested, causing you to laugh.

"You're right these will solve everything," You giggled, shaking the chips.

A small smile crept on Katsuki's face at your laughter. "Look- he's going to keep getting drunk so- he will probably call you again. He'll try to find any excuse to come over. Don't let him- unless you want more heartbreak," Katsuki recommended, as he parked out in front of your place.

"Ok," you nodded in agreement. "Believe me I don't want to see him again after tonight," You said unbuckling your seat belt. "Thanks for the ride home- and the chips," you said, and got out of the car.

Katsuki grunted in acknowledgment and waved a hand at you before taking off. You let out a deep sigh and made your way into your place.

You threw off your uncomfortable shoes and plopped yourself down on the floor. What a shitty night, you thought- but as you stared at the Hot Cheetos a smile crept on your face. Then, just as Katsuki had speculated- Denki was calling again. You watched the screen on your phone light up with his face. Such a cute picture you had taken of him- Once your phone stopped ringing you called Katsuki.

"What the hell do you want now? Thought this nightmare was over," He complained into the phone, that was on speaker in his car.

"You're right- he's calling me again," You answered, as you spoke over the phone the other line buzzed. Denki was calling again.

"So don't answer," Katsuki said as if it was just that easy.

"Yeah...," You mumbled solemnly into the phone- and Katsuki didn't know why but his stomach turned at the sadness in your voice.

"Or-... if you really want to piss him off- I can turn around and answer it for you." Katsuki offered.

A smile beamed on your face- " Yeah... I think I'd like that," You answered and pulled the bag of Hot Cheetos over.

This started as a Denki x reader and kind of ended as a Katsuki x reader. Ops- I couldn’t control what came out of me when I sat down to type it haha- Thank you for reading hope you enjoyed the ride!

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?

making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)

We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.

All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.

Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):

Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):

Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.

Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:

Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...

Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 （1987） - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.

Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!

Modern setting shows:

My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu （潜伏）was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang （人间正道是沧桑）。 These were around '08 and '09.

Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 （2004） (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):

Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):

喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 （1986-1987） Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 （1984-2010） Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).

Taiwanese Dramas:

This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.

Note about CNY:

For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.

Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:

In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

Thoughts on fratricide in literature etc. ?

this ask has been sitting in my inbox for the past month and i havent been sure how to answer it bc its such a broad and foundational topic that one could write multiple books on but then yesterday i read phoenecian women by euripides and eteocles and polyneices are rly THEE archetypal fratricidal brothers in literature bc it's a two-way fratricide and i feel like most classic examples of fratricide (cain and abel being the most obvious) always have a clear perpetrator and victim (i mean i'd argue that polyneices is still the victim and eteocles the perpetrator, but it's less clear-cut here). medea and absyrtus is also a very prominent example, particularly in the sense that a sister killing a brother is considered especially shocking (and jason was rly an idiot for seeing that and still being like "oh well this doesn't affect me"). also i thought about this ask when rewatching kipo w my brother, bc i'd forgotten that [spoilers] emilia just killed her brother in cold blood like that, and that scene genuinely shocked me, especially from a show that continually stresses the humanity and fundamental good everyone is capable of. bone-chilling. anyway most fiction involves some sort of fratricide or patricide(/matricide) or filicide in one way or another. it's simply one of the most human stories.

Honestly loved and I sorta miss Bianca from Superboy.

Hmm... This might just be me, but I'm a little iffy about the memes on tumblr now centering on femininity. I get it's all in good fun. But I just see so much of the whole "babygirl" thing and calling men "wives" and joking about men having "pussies." I don't know, it's just throwing me off. Might be also because of the radfem rhetoric I see people casually reblog without even realizing it's radfem rhetoric. The whole shift has just been very strange.

So a concept for a story/FE-like game I had a while ago just came back into my mind while I was at the gym, and I daydreamt about it a little more and came up with a few ideas! finally, the gym is good for something

I mentioned the concept a while back, but it was basically about a typical fantasy world being invaded by an alien private company who colonizes planets to exploit their resources because it's always a good time to say fuck capitalism, and where fantasy and magic would be at odds with sci-fi and tech.

So, about the new ideas I had (as usual no names for now because I'm bad at those):

There would be two campaigns. However, they'd happen at the same time in the same canon, which means nothing like the modern games or even FE8. Something more like Echoes, but you play the stories separately. Maybe with the finale unlocked once you beat both.

The fantasy campaign would have as the protagonist a young scholar who knows a lot about magic and the more fantasy concept, and in general does a lot of research in their own. Their quest is to investigate and stop this unkown threat before they bleed the world dry.

Meanwhile, the protagonist of the sci-fi campaign is a young idealistic squire with a hobby for engineering who recently joined into the private military to pay the bills and because they genuinely believed the corporation to be a force of good. The story, obviously, proves them wrong by forcing them to confront just how harm they're actually doing to the worlds they "visit", as well as to realize just how exploited and abuse they employees truly are. So, their quest is one of quite literal unionization and internal rebellion.

You know that old saying that technology advanced enough is indistinguishable to magic? It would be more true than ever here, with Magic and Resistance in the Fantasy story having an equivalent in the Sci-Fi one, they're just literally named different. (And who knows, would be cool to reveal the technology is actually fueled by magic stole from the words they occupied) And, in general, with spells, weapons and classes having sci-fi counterparts, just like in Fates between Hoshido and Nohr.

And, in general, how these worlds are much more similar than one would assume at first glance, having a quite a few parallels. (A bad one is just how a CEO is pretty much just a king with a different name)

I'd hate to do a "technology bad" story though. It's lame and wrong. So I'd like to do instead to show how the two worlds could coexist together, in a world where technology isn't abused by greedy corporations for profit. Maybe pull an Echoes and have the story end with the company destroyed and have the fantasy world become a hybrid of both magic and technology.

What do you think? Maybe I'll come back to this one day in some shape or form!
