Do stars always create jets as they form? No one is sure. As a gas cloud gravitationally contracts, it forms a disk that can spin too fast to continue contracting into a protostar. Theorists hypothesize that this spin can be slowed by expelling jets. This speculation coincides with known Herbig-Haro (HH) objects, young stellar objects seen to emit jets. Pictured is Herbig-Haro (HH) 211, a young star in formation recently imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in infrared light and in great detail. Along with the two narrow beams of particles, red shock waves can be seen. The jets of HH 211 will likely change shape as they brighten and fade over the next 100,000 years, as research into the details of star formation continues.

Cushing gives a great late stage performance (my god but the man could throw himself into even the silliest and slightest role) #but alas this is also a flashback horror‚ a format i find particularly frustrating (your tension is necessarily reduced when you know at #the outset exactly who survives and who doesn't....). fun but not the classic I'd hoped for

Holograms capture ghosts of things in the spaces they leave behind – patterns of light they once reflected, recorded and illuminated from different angles. Comparing 'live' holograms produced by a changing object, like a vibrating plane’s wing or a speeding bullet, creates holographic interference – seen here as shock waves around a bullet in flight. These patterns reveal subtle changes, like how stress affects a surface. Holographic interferometry has a bright future in forensic science, architecture and engineering – perhaps spotting damaging vibrations in load-bearing beams. But it may also detect subtle changes in living tissues, comparing how they change from moment to moment, possibly revealing diagnostic patterns for circulatory disorders, or monitoring the stresses inside medical implants.
