The Minke leather sandals by Shelly Shen are designed to seamlessly transition from work to evening engagements. They feature a stylish curved stacked heel and crossover straps for a blend of elegance and comfort. Crafted with a leather upper, lining, and sock atop a manmade sole, these sandals offer durability alongside their chic design. The heel height is set at a comfortable, making them a practical choice for those looking for both style and comfort.
First off, it is absolutely hilarious that you matched up Shen Jiu & Mike Shelly aka the 2 guys that got bodysnatched in one way or another. Secondly, this is propaganda for Shen Jiu because he really IS incredibly tragic. Mike, while very tragic himself, is at least acknowledged by the cast as a separate person and, in a way, mourned. Shen Jiu never gets that. Only 2 people ever know he was a separate person, and quite frankly neither of them liked him much. Shang Qinghua was more scared of him than anything else while he was alive, and Shen Yuan is LITERALLY the person who snatched his body, and does not give a shit beyond being annoyed at SQH for not giving him the complete backstory to Shen Jiu in the "og" novel. And thing is, a ton of bad stuff would have happened if he DIDN'T get snatched! how would it feel to know that all of your family and friends would be safe and happy and all you had to do was just... not be you anymore. Nearly everything that went wrong in your timeline was so fucking avoidable that this guy managed to avoid the "rocks fall, everybody dies" part of it while acting on only half the information he actually needs. Mike is a tragedy because his fate was ultimately unavoidable, manipulated by the hands of others. Shen Jiu is a tragedy because his fate could have been avoided SO. EASILY.
After posting a little book recommendation a few weeks ago, I received a few comments about some more recs. And seeing as I am currently reading book 70 for the year, I thought it could be fun. So this is what this post is. These are all contemporary romances (I'm not a historical fiction fan) and will be either new adult or adult romance. Sorry, but I’m too old for young adult these days as teenagers piss me off.
These will be placed into categories of my favourite tropes.
Enemies to Lovers:
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. This has to be hands down the best enemies to lovers story I have ever read. This is about Lucy and Josh, both assistants at a publishing company. She’s happy, he’s grumpy. They are colleagues and enemies, they fight all the time. But the sexual tension is off the charts. The best slow burn book I’ve ever read and definitely worth the wait. (plus this is going to be a movie with Lucy Hale and Robbie Amell, perfect right?)
Vicious by LJ Shen. Baron (Vicious) Spencer is an asshole. He’s a rich, spoilt brat with one love. Emilia Leblanc. He wanted her when they were teenagers, but she was with his best friend. He is a bully, mean and a horrible person to her and forces her to leave the state when he doesn’t get what he wants. Years later, he needs her help. She begins to work for him and discovers the act he puts on to hide his true scars. This book is sexy and dark. Not a cute fluffy story. But a good read (just don’t take it too seriously)
Into The Wild by KA Tucker. A big-city girl from Toronto goes to Alaska to visit her sick dad she hasn’t seen in over 25 years. Calla runs into cocky bush pilot Jonah. He hates her spoilt brat personality, she can't stand his cocky attitude. Hate turns to like, and eventually. Love. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. This story is sad, funny, sweet and romantic. And has the best banter ever. (plus there is a sequel) Eeek.
Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuisten. What happens when the prince of England and the first son of the USA have a secret gay love affair? This book, I love! They hate each other, then they become friends then they become lovers. The end. Perfect book. Just perfect.
Hate They Neighbour by S.M Soto. Sexy bad boy jerk Roman gets a new neighbour with sweet Olivia. She wants to be his friend, he is nothing but mean to her. She is recovering from a broken heart, he is trying to keep his family together. This is HOT HOT HOT! This has one of the sexist scenes I’ve ever read in a while including a lollipop. Trust me, this is soo good.
Friends to Lovers
Beard Science by Penny Reid. Jennifer is sick of being under her parent's thumb so she in lists the town’s evil genius, Cletus to help her and find her husband. I love this book, Jennifer is sweet. Cletus is not. He is brash and no-nonsense but I love him. Their love story is so sweet and turns from friends to lovers in such a sweet way it will have you awwing in no time.
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren. This is another fav. While I love a bad boy, sometimes the good guys do finish first. This is a friend to lovers story. Quirky Hazel and newly single Josh decided to set each other up on dates. When they are a series of disasters one after the other, and a drunken night later. They end up in bed together and discover love was in front of them the whole time. This is a cute and heartwarming story. You can never go wrong with a book by Christina Lauren.
Strangers to Lovers
Beard in Mind by Penny Reid. OMG! You can not get me to shut up about Penny Reid and her Winston series. It is the best series I have ever read. Every book is perfect. But this one here is my favourite of the series. This is a story about kind-hearted Beau Winston. He meets new mechanic at his garage Shelly Sullivan. She is bold, brash and has no filter. While Beau is used to women being charmed by his smile and good looks. Shelly is different. This book deals with some sensitive issues so if you get trigged by self-harm and real conversations about mental health. Stay clear. But this book is so good. Beau is the best book boyfriend ever. And I love him. (shoutout to Truth of Beard. Duane is Beau’s twin and his love story is so good)
Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren. I know, I’ve got another Christina Lauren book on the list, but I just love them. And this book is one of their best! Mia and her friends go to Vegas after college. They get drunk, meet some handsome men and oopps, they get married. Mia wakes up married to sexy Frenchman Ansel. He invites her to Paris for the summer. And she accepts. After a horrible start, they begin to learn more about each other and fall for each other in the city of love. This book is so hot, and while Ansel may be the sweetest he has a dirty mouth and a few secrets in his closet. (This is part of a series involving Mia and her 2 other friends that also got married in Vegas. They are worth a read, but this one is my favourite)
Second Chance Romance
You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle. I wasn't sure where to put this one because it is a second chance romance and enemies to lovers. Anyway, this story is about Naomi and Nicholas. They are engaged but hate each other. Naomi wants to call off the engagement, the bad news is she can’t afford to fit the bill. So she tries to get Nicholas to end it instead. They are mean and horrible to each other, but as they spend more time together they soon begin to realise what they loved in the first place. When I first started this book I was in the belief that this couple should not be together. But by the end, all I wanted was them to be happy together. I loved this book, not as hot as the others. But worth a read.
Workplace Romance
Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. What a surprise, another Penny Reid Book on my list. This is the first book in the Knitting in the City series (which I am currently reading right now and am on book 3) This is the story of Janie. In one day she is fired, finds out her boyfriend cheated on her and is kicked out of her apartment. That same day she meets Quinn Sullivan. He escorts her out of the building only to run into her again a few weeks later and save her from being drugged at a club. He gets her new job and turns out to be the millionaire boss. This is a lovely story. Janie has to be the most quirky heroine I’ve ever read. And I love her. (There is also a sequel called Neanderthal marries human which is also good.)
This is just a shortlist of my favs, if you like this or want more recs. Let me know, this was so much fun.
yknow. i have a firm rule about my misgendering my muses, but uh. not everyone’s about pages are done so there’s no way to know their pronouns. so! here’s a short list
How did we not see this coming???? Everything we know of Max, her one true nemesis, her weakness when she is home with her sisters, the one who never gives up on annoying her, pursuing her, and that she just can’t back away from, the feral cat in their neighbourhood. Which means, it was only poetic justice, when at 7% into our rip-roaring, loud out loud, action packed tale, she states “That’s my kitty cat. You can’t shoot my kitty cat.”it all made sense
Max doesn’t like cats, never has, and Zé is no exception "And this was why Max hated cats! Tricky, evil, fur-licking cats!" but he wiggles into her conscious and she is inexplicably drawn to him. And what a cat he is, between his antics, "Then, with his gaze still on Dutch, Zé slowly reached over and, with a flick of his wrist, knocked Dutch’s soda out of his hand." And Max’s one-liners “It’s quickly turning into a teddy bear picnic. I thought I’d go out and pick up some liquor.” And the story in general “&#@k!” the last human male exploded. “More badgers!”", I was laughing so hard in places, I had to stop and catch my breath
The attraction is there too, but finding time and place is isn’t easy, as Charlie clearly states to Max, “@#%k the cat on your own time. Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!”, there is always something that needs to be done. When they finally get time on their own, they are explosive together, well matched, physically and emotionally, and Max’s cat has her pegged 😊
There were some emotional moments as well. Settling of some matters with their extended family, and Max coming to the realization that she has a heart and feelings. “Family is family.” That’s what Carlie had taught Max. But it was Charlie who’d taught Max that family only mattered “if they are in it with you. To the end. Do or die.”. Max won my heart, Zé won my heart, and Charlie, Berg, Stevie, Shen, and Kyle, yes Kyle is still around, burrowed deeper into it
And fear not fellow Honey Badger lovers, I don’t think this will be the end….
Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas. Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring. But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.
I am so torn about this book. I love Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken and all of her books. I also really liked this overall story. Unfortunately I did not like the core love story at all. Out of all of her books this is my least liked.
I’ll start with the good. I really liked that we got to see more of the Mackilligan family. They are nuts but entertaining. I also liked that we got to see more of the sisters “abilities”. Max’s glandular defense and giant shifted Stevie were amazing. I also have the feeling that Charlie can shift, and that she is the flip side to Stevie. Because she is the oldest and caretaker her not shifting is psychological. That unlike Stevie when she is panicked or worried her default is to remain human, where she feels most in control. That her need to remain in control because she is constantly on defense is what keeps her from shifting. I wonder if therapy or this new science project of Stevie’s will allow us to see what she turns into.
I also like the way Stevie’s mental illness was handled. It’s an issue, but treated like an illness. No different than if Stevie had a bad diabetic episode or asthma attack. When things go left the reaction is to get her, her meds and into a safe space. I also liked that so many other characters talked about their meds or therapy and it was all discussed as perfectly normal and uneventful.
I enjoyed the new science of hybrid’s arc, and can’t wait to see where that goes. I also liked that the twin cousins were discussed but not the focus of the book. I liked that they are out there plotting but there are other concerns. Finally I loved all the appearances from beloved characters and that so much time was spent with others. There were tons of scenes that the main characters didn’t even appear in and it worked.
So what makes me dislike this book? As I said the love story. This is the first book where the leads were a couple because the leads were supposed to be a couple. There was nothing that happened between these two characters that made them falling in love believable to me. First their age difference. Although their specific ages were never said, it was repeatedly stated by several characters independent of each other that Shen is a lot older than Stevie. So I am guessing that means 10-15 years difference. Although Stevie has spent a lot of time around older people because she is a genius she was sheltered. Nothing about her felt mature. She is the baby of her family and not only is she treated as such but she behaves as such. Shen is not immature so I didn’t see where they meet.
Stevie is a genius. Not just in one field either. She can basically master anything. Shen is totally normal and not in the least intellectual. Stevie switches careers on a whim and is always at the top of whatever her chosen field is. Shen is a bodyguard with no career ambition and all. In fact he had no ambition other than finding a new bamboo stalk to replace the one he finished. Stevie is high strung, Shen is beyond mellow. Stevie’s family is a chaotic, abusive, mess. Shen’s family is tight knit, loving, and grounded. I know there is the saying opposites attract, but in those cases there is something the couple bonds over. Something even small or random that they have in common. These two had nothing. Not even a TV show. A bit later on it was sort of inferred that their commonality was sex. But that was a reach to me. Every shifter female I have read in this series likes it rough and often. There was nothing about Shen’s need for “wild panda sex” that was so out of the norm compared to other shifter couples. He could’ve had sex with any other female character we’ve come across and had the same sexual chemistry.
There wasn’t even an event or conversation between the characters that inspired love. Stevie liked Shen because she likes Pandas. Everyone told Shen he liked Stevie, so he did. Even their love confessions were lame. These two just felt phoned in. As I said there were plenty of scenes where neither character appeared, and it worked because their interactions weren’t interesting.
All that being said I would not recommend skipping this book because there were a lot of events and interactions that were not only fun but important to the series overall. However feel free to skip over the Stevie/Shen couple scenes because they basically have no bearing on the story. I am anxiously awaiting the next book, and I hope Max gets a way better deal in the love department.

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke (GoodReads) (BookDepository)
Practice. Very little writing. Though it relaxes me it is murder to get started. The temptation is to turn on the TV and see the latest about the virus.
Trump has declared this a day of prayer. The evangelical right have fallen for him in a scary way. They have their reasons. And despite whatever has happened the right is beginning to talk about our president's strong leadership (!) in a crisis.
Beautiful day. Ideal for a walk and some shopping (look at all of those empty shelves!)... Few people out. Very little traffic. Music (Handel) blasts from the unoccupied Geffen Hall. Lincoln Center banner adverts flapping in the breeze. None the events they show are actually going to be seen. Even the much touted Shen Yun company will not go on. (I still don't quite get their connection with Falun Gong.) Those poor kids, stranded here and, I'm guessing, housed somewhere in the city six to a room.
Note: It was less than a week ago that I ran into John D, fellow Tennessean, who had a newish show at one of the Lincoln Center theaters. It is a musical about famous people in L A and their experiences on L S D. Whether or not this show will be able to reopen after the virus break remains to be seen. Of course this show, called "Flying Over Sunset," features an Aldous Huxley character. I am trying to imagine a singing and dancing Aldous Huxley.
Note: Back in college we were all reading Huxley's slender book about his L S D experience, "The Doors of Perception." The band took its name from this book. There is much more to the Huxley in Hollywood story, even a book (I can't find my copy) bearing that title. Huxley made cruel fun of California in "After Many a Summer Dies the Swan." California exacted its revenge. Huxley's house burned down... Much more to this story... At a sort of audition when a project about Mr. Magoo was pitched (Mr. Magoo as Don Quixote [!]) Huxley (with his terrible eyesight) made a bad impression by tripping over a coffee table.
Note: Another celeb who is featured in the same musical is (L S D user) Cary Grant. One cannot help thinking of the Shelly Winters. When he picked her up for a date, Ms Winters says he thought she heard her mother say, "Don't be careful."
Evening: Joe debates Bernie. Both are nice guys but neither of them can tap into the tremendous anger of the right, those who feel disenfranchised by the system.
Note: I haven't (really) slept in over a week. Anxieties...
Second in The Honey Badger Chronicles paranormal romance series set in New York City, a spin-off from the Magnus/Pride universe, and revolving around those crazy honey badgers and their family and friends. The couple focus is on Dr Stevie MacKilligan and Shen Li.

Jesslyn Tannady is a Developer Advocate at Facebook. She creates educational content about Facebook’s technologies so that anyone outside of Facebook can use them. In a past life, she worked on video games and augmented reality navigation tools for astronauts for NASA. When she’s not thinking about virtual reality technology, she’s probably illustrating or voice acting. You can find her on Twitter at @jtannady.
In our conversation, we talk about Jesslyn’s past life in Augmented and Virtual Reality (ARVR), tech communities and democratisation, and reflecting on attending women’s educational institutions.
