Fanfic authors, I have a question!

I've been thinking about how fanfic has become more mainstream in the last few years, and if that's affected how open us authors are about our fanfic hobby.

I wanted to try to do some short comics for the otgw au but couldnt come up with any Situations to put ben and diego in. so here they are not-talking about their trauma instead lmao

Worlds Apart probably holds the biggest place in my heart, just because I love the characters so much and the whole premise of that fic still speaks to me even after all this time.

Play Pretend might be the one I'm most proud of??? It is a fic I can re-read to this day and not nitpick. I think it stands well on its own, and it's my longest one-shot to this day.

Pick Yourself Up might not be my biggest fic, but I put a lot of thought and feeling into it, and I think it has some of my best writing because of it.

In Need of Assistance because I wasn't sure I could write something funny/witty and so it was just an experiment to see if I could. And then it turned out to just be a blast to write.

Time in a Bottle because I took a new set of characters and dove in, and it was so fun to explore the characters and their dynamics, as well as come up with new plotlines and timelines. I still have a lot planned out for that fic.

Imagine this...

Five is in Hotel Oblivion.

None of his siblings are with him. There's no immediate danger.

The hotel is empty and calm. In the middle of one of the halls is a grand piano. A gorgeous thing.

Five is relatively relaxed for the first time in a long time, but he feels kind of... lost.

He's alone and with no chance of escape or an immediate goal or threat in mind, he feels directionless. Kind of floating about with no purpose.

It's an eerie, yet haunting type of calm.

Five approaches the piano.

What piece should he play?

My vote: "Reverie" by Debussy.

I think it could work for the show and I think Five would feel good playing it.

I've already waxed poetic about how cathartic it can be to play pieces for yourself and some pieces I think Five could play given the mindset he was in post-s2.

"Reverie" isn't on that list because it isn't like those other pieces.

( Context: Debussy was an Impressionist composer when experimentation with music outside of standard chord progressions and strict musical forms was rising in popularity. Think like the composer version of Monet. Things are more blurred together. It's less of a musical journey and more of a musical exploration of pictures. )

"Reverie" isn't a piece that really goes anywhere. And it doesn't feel like it wants to go anywhere. It ends practically where it started and there's no real emotion behind it. It's delicate, it's beautiful but it is neither sad nor happy -- it simply... is.

It simply would exist, like Five in Hotel Oblivion. I don't think Five would be happy, but he isn't looking for happy after all. After 45 years of struggling constantly, I would imagine being in a place with no immediate danger would be a shock. I don't think he would be ready to be... sad. At least not for himself. Not at first.

I believe playing "Reverie" would be good for him. It's a good piece for when you're all in your feels but you don't know exactly what you're feeling (speaking from experience). It doesn't demand much from you, other than a delicate touch and to allow the notes to speak and breathe for themselves.

And I'm not sure how to phrase this but... playing a piece for yourself that is gentle and delicate feels like you are extending that kindness to yourself. You allow yourself to be gentle and to be delicate, acknowledging you are feeling some emotions but not having to do anything about them. They simply are.

(and if you're really feeling it, you play the piece again and again and just float gently on the notes.... and that's how you end up recording the piece a week and a half after you started learning it. #thefeels)

It's a kindness I want Five to extend to himself. And it's the most I can hope for if he does ends up in Hotel Oblivion.

Yes! I love responding to comments. I am so excited somebody liked my fic enough to tell me and I love giving vague answers to any speculation! I also like discussing headcanons and stuff too.

Hmmmmm 🤔 probably the MerMay drabbles Farewell and The Hunt.

Probably my Diego and Grace drabble Finders Keepers and also The tails of the Umbrella Aquarium

Uhhh I like to write fusion fics if they count? So I take a premise or idea from something else and make it work in the TUA universe. So the idea of chrono impairment from time travellers wife, or the curse of obedience from Ella Enchanted.

I've been lucky and received only support in the first year of writing. If somebody hasn't liked my fic, they've been polite and mature enough to just close my fic and move on.

I don't ship. But over the ten months spent writing time travellers life I've gone from "Dolores was a weird bit of storyline in canon" to "Dolores is the best platonic wife, pry her from my dead hands"

I have three right now and I hope to finish them all, eventually

What are your writing strengths?

I can do a decent angsty drabble when the mood strikes! I'm also pretty organised with note taking for ideas too.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I just can't write fluff, let alone humour. Hats off to those of you who can write feel good and happy stuff!

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Hmmm. It hasn't really come up for me except for the odd phrase for Klaus like Danke or Quelle surprise. I think if it's anything more than a word or phrase it's probably helpful to find someone who speaks the language to check it for you. A word or phrase I think you can believably get wrong as people confidently say things wrong in other languages thinking they are being clever all the time in RL.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

TUA and I'm still here a year later (12 months next week 🥳)

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Oof tricky one. They are favourites for different reasons. Quake because it was my first fic and I finished it and it got me started as a writer. Time travellers life is my current baby and first long fic and I've poured so much into it and I'm still going. So it's probably my absolute favourite, but I also really like Obedience Suite because it's a really different tone and it's cool to explore Vanyas POV.

I'm on a mountaineering documentary binge and like. I genuinely think going to climb these insane peaks with progressively wilder and more dangerous parameters to be special and first is So Stupid. did you ever watch fargo? it has similar story beats to true detective, at least, season one (it’s another anthology type series, crime focused) there’s a dude in there who i think you’d get a kick out out of… very much quietly intensely batshit insane and Off™️ but somehow presents himself as the sanest one in the room. he’s rust cohle, in a way, but murderer, not detective

Thanks for the rec! Watched S1 over the past week or so. Was good but it frustrated me. Billy Bob Thornton Serial Killer was the highlight, you were right! He was very fun. What a weirdo.

I don't know if it was that I grew up in an area with accents like theirs so I was like, hyper aware They Are Doing An Accent, or that it was based on Coen Brother's work, but a lot of the characters felt... rather like caricatures? I don't know, something about it had a wall between me and it, where I wasn't immersed so they felt like We Are Actors On A Set Delivering Lines Really Well rather than I was in the moment, if that makes any sense. Maybe it was the monologues, Flannigan series can have the same affect to me.

Still, was a really good cast. I needed Martin Freeman to get his comeuppence like three episodes sooner, my god that man could just wiggle out of everything (SPOILER he sent his wife to get shot???? what the fuck is wrong with him. I was screaming SPOILER OVER). I always like it when Colin Hanks pops up in things. Allison Tolman and Billy Bob Thornton fucking carried the whole thing, they were the only two I didn't really get the I Am Delivering Lines With Emotion And This Thick Minnesotan Accent feeling.

Writing was generally tight, too. Good full circle moments and Chekov's guns, pieces came together in satisfying ways. Was fun to be rooting for Molly to catch her killers and for Billy Bob to fucking get Martin Freeman. I think it could have been one episode shorter, or skipped the time jump, to give the police a modicum more competence, they were killing me.

Idk if I'll watch the other seasons, I did enjoy it overall. Might check out the newest one because I'm a slut for Jon Hamm.
