Starkid is one of the absolute best arguments for supprting independent art. The fact that the shows you're invested in can't get canceled by Big Daddy Streaming, the quality is always amazing, the love of the cast and crew doesn't get squeezed out by surprise budget reductions, the fact that since crowd funding provides almost all costs up front (plus the presence of voluntary digital ticket/in person tickets for additional funding), the fan base can access the full material for whatever cost they can contribute (even if you can give nothing monetarily, you will still get a professionally shot version of the material eventually, without surprise fees or password crackdowns, AND with captions/completely accesible regardless of location). The same goes for Tin Can Bros, Shipwrecked, and all the other associated theater and web series companies loosely connected to Starkid. Like, I cannot believe the amazing content provided to us at the same level as Broadway or streaming services with billion dollars at hand, with almost none of the catches that come with others. Like, I cannot believe that we get all of this right at our hands.

for people who haven’t read the shadow and bone/ six of crows books, but have seen the show:
- inej ghafa is a survivor of childhood sex trafficking. she has ptsd and reacts in a panic attack at even walking past the menagerie
- kaz’s trauma isn’t just pekka rollins being responsible for jordie’s death, and waking up on the barge. he had to swim to shore, age nine and barely alive, using jordie’s body as a float
- the darkling has done far worse things than are shown on screen. he is not a ‘lost man’ and alina is not his ‘balance’
- alina was seventeen upon the darkling being nsfw/ romantic with her
- matthias helvar did not lead drüskelle, that was jarl brum- matthias is only just barely an adult himself
- the crows are not their own separate gang, they are part of the dregs, who per haskell leads and kaz takes over from haskell after haskell sold out his lieutenant (kaz) to pekka rollins
- zoya, genya, and alina have personalities outside of either being traumatised or hating each other
- alina never wanted any of the power and fame and idolatry, and in the end of the books is stripped of it all. she is very happy about this
- jesper is a gambling addict and somebody who watched the death of his mother

“I actually had a moment too in that garden.Yeah, I... I saw a Datura Meloxia. They are, like, extremely rare! And, you know, when I saw it... all I wanted in the world was just to tell you about it.”

Wylan Van Eck at the sight of rare butterflies: Wow. look at these incredible and unique rare creatures. I’m going to spout copious amounts of facts about them whilst I think about how lucky I am to be witnessing this right now.
Wylan Van Eck about five minutes later: eat the pissing butterflies you fuckers or die

No I’m ok, it’s just the way that Jesper is probably one of the first men that Inej has felt safe with since the menagerie and Inej is one of the only people who loves Jesper fully and unconditionally regardless of his faults and now they have to leave each other for separate goals that got me for a second there

I want to know people’s overall feelings on this one
Tumblr media
It’s pretty clear this is who people were talking about when criticizing the awful asian representation on the show and i am feeling quite ignorant for not seeing it because i really loved this character
I do get the huge problem on making shu han the stand in for ALL asian cultures, it really doesn’t matter if it is on the book, that’s no excuse to not fix things that already got a lot of rightful criticism , they should have stuck with one country to avoid that problematic interchangeable asian cultures trope
But her as a character i think i am missing something, maybe an offensive trope i am not familiar with. Because she is not a mook to be defeated to make other characters look cool, she actually kicks their ass and walks off very dignified and she is not a generic cold warrior woman or at least i didn’t see her like that, the few minutes she appeared onscreen gave a lot and how can i not mention how much she loves her old husband? So beautiful
I really would like to know what makes her an offensive stereotype , i have done research before, i know about the dragon lady trope, the lotus blossom trope, but she fits neither.
I know is no one’s work to educate about this subjects but if someone wants to rant about it this is your shot.

so we all know about “who the hell is jordie?” “someone i trusted. someone i couldn’t afford to lose”, right, but what we forget is the significance of kaz calling jesper ‘jordie’. it’s not just that jesper is a brother to him- jordie was kaz’s protector. jordie was the 13 year old that protected kaz and who kaz protected, the goofy one who made him smile and bought him hot chocolate at night. he felt safe around him. he trusted jordie with his life. in calling jesper ‘jordie’, kaz shows that subconsciously, he trusts jesper to protect him, that he could turn to him should he need it. and every time he yells at jesper, the gambler who couldn’t stay out of the red, for losing another bet, getting in debt again, all he can see is that same thirteen-year-old boy, swindled out of everything he owned and left for dead on the street. with every word he yells at jesper, he silently urges him to stay alive. with every bet jesper makes, all kaz can think is “i can’t lose a brother. not again.”
