DanceHouse Premieres Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice and Reveals 2023/24 Season

As DanceHouse announces its 2023-2024 season including six exciting performance, it readies for the final presentation in its 15th Anniversary season. DanceHouse presents the exhilarating North American premiere of Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice, May 5 and 6, 2023 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite Of Spring, South Africa’s award-winning choreographer Masilo roots her powerful rendition in the rituals, rhythms, and sounds of Botswana. Together, the cast of ten dancers and four musicians interacts to explore the intricate symbiosis of community, sacrifice, and renewal in a riveting fusion of Tswana, the traditional dance of Botswana, and contemporary dance performed to a live original score.

It is a timely call to all of us.” Vancouver is the first North American stop in the highly acclaimed international tour of The Sacrifice. Following its DanceHouse performances, the production continues to Ottawa, Toronto, and the United States. Dada Masilo (South Africa), The Sacrifice, runs May 5 and 6, 2023 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamiliton. Tickets are available now online at dancehouse.ca Subscriptions for the DanceHouse 2023/24 Season are also now available. The season offers six productions as part of the 2023/24 subscription, plus one special add-on presentation in July. I’m battling some hardcore post con depression by admiring everything I got so I thought I’d show off my big loot! These are all from 3 different cons, Minicomi, Summerfest and Anirevo! I separated them all by where I got them and I put what con in the pic’s description so if you’re curious you can see!

I did put the ship commissions I got in their own post to show them off a bit more and the Tenkaede is off on it’s own because Iforgotitwhenitookthepic I made it myself at a booth at Minicomi! It was super fun!

And most of these are commissions because I mostly wanted V3 stuff plusimaddictedtobuyingcommissions but I did get a few prints. One of Chiaki because of course, the first Ouma pic was a print and it was the only one there so I snapped it up. And at Anirevo not only did I get a print of my baby Chihiro there was a V3 print!!!!! And it was Saiouma!!! Being in Ouma cosplay and seeing that was so amazing I’m really really happy I have it! The person running it was super nice and complimented my cosplay and we kept going back there with more V3 cosplayers haha.

The last special thing I wanted to point out was the Ouma sticker was free! The person who had them got them in the wrong size so they were just giving them out and they gave one to me!

I don’t have any regrets about any of my purchases~ Everything looks amazing and I’m overjoyed with it all!

Artist Spotlight: Yumo

🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨Hi everyone! We are here again to introduce another one of our talented artists for today’s Artist Spotlight - Yumo!

🎨Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hello, I’m Yumo! I’m a recently graduated illustrator who likes jellyfish and making cute things.

🎨What type of art style interests you the most?

I don’t know if I can pick just one type! I admire a wide range of art styles, but I think the ones that have had the biggest impact on my own work are probably mid-century children’s book illustrations as well as anime and manga — especially Ghibli films and Jellyfish Princess.

🎨What’s your favourite thing about your artwork?

The roundness maybe…? I definitely like playing around with the colours and shapes the best!

🎨Out of all the pieces you’ve created so far, which was the most challenging? Why?

I wouldn’t say any of the work that I make is way more challenging than the rest; each piece kind of forces me through the regular rigamarole of trying to navigate perspective, anatomy, and lighting. I generally enjoy making my personal artwork, so I don’t think I register the challenges as strongly...it’s sort of a no thoughts, head empty situation.

Illustrations for school, however, were definitely a big mental strain. I’m terribly indecisive, so I overthought everything I had to do for class. I think the most challenging piece this year was probably a bicycle-themed mural design for class, as I was not used to drawing bikes or working that cleanly.

🎨Could you tell us more about what types of art/merchandise we can expect from you this year?

I’ll have lots of animal and food-related items including stickers, postcard prints, greeting cards, original paper-cuts and watercolour paintings, as well as clay and shrinky dink pins. I may experiment with needle-felt pins and other accessories too, so please stay tuned!

For those that are familiar with me and seeing me around at conventions in the Vancouver, BC area I want you to know that I have moved away from the Vancouver area. So attending conventions has become more costly, and more tricky to attend. With that in mind I won’t be able to attend these 1 day cons all the time..which makes me very sad ;~; Now that I’ve told you all that, I have already paid for this table a long time ago, and I’m not gonna waste that Pre-Reg cost! I will be at table A5, I will have MLP stickers and magnets (if my printer works well haha), along with a few new prints and pins! I hope to see some familiar faces while I’m there!
