I went ahead and updated Frankie's reference! She now officially has three pokemon. Though, unlike with her first two partners, she wasn't the one who named the Klefki
Instead, Criminal got that nickname from her coworkers after an unnamed incident took place (we don't have to talk about it)
Despite being in the Explorers, Frankie does not battle and will get offended if people try to battle her! This is because her Magnemite and Togekiss are service pokemon who primarily help her with day to day tasks. There's more information about them here for anyone interested ^^
Overall, Frankie is a weak link when it comes to being a trainer, but she makes up for it by being an absolute menace in every other department. She is also not afraid of hand to hand combat, though she's notably not very good at it

Service Pokemon Headcanons
Recent asks got me thinking about service pokemon so I thought it would be fun to write down some ideas about how I think the system works overall
Similar to real life, in order for a pokemon to be considered a service pokemon it has to be trained and certified by the region the trainer lives in. The pokemon has to wear some kind of identification, usually in the form of a vest, and the trainer needs to keep a copy of the certification on hand in case the pokemon causes trouble or disrupts those around it. However, these can and typically are digital and any Rotom phone, poketch, pokedex, etc is equipped to pull it up at the press of a button
Pokemon are classified into categories based on size: A, B, C, and D. A is any pokemon that can be safely tucked under the arm or carried in a purse / bag, B is any pokemon that can fit in the lap of an average adult, C is anything the size of or smaller than a human, and D is everything larger than that. These classifications are mostly relevant for indoor venues and accommodations: you're unlikely to have a problem with a Class A-C pokemon, but Class D pokemon are pretty unlikely to be able to fit in doors or shopping aisles and have some trouble outside of their balls. There's been a lot of controversy in the pokemon world about whether service pokemon the size of people should be charged as an extra passenger, especially since they need their own seat (the answer, btw, as a resounding "no")
Generally speaking, the types preferred for service pokemon are normal, fighting, fairy, psychic, and electric. Normal types are good all rounders, fighting types are excellent for mobility assistance, electric types shine for those with service devices, psychic types can predict accidents and have the intelligence and dexterity for complicated tasks, and fairy types are great at emotional support. Other types CAN be service pokemon, but for practicality reasons they're not as common. The inherent talents of the species is also relevant
You can get your own pokemon trained as a service pokemon, and those who become disabled later in life will often do this because of their existing bond with their partner. Thus, there are plenty of unorthodox service pokemon out there

What's the deal with Amity square and it being so restrictive with what pokemon it allows? I have a service tangela for my anxiety and they turned me away at the gate even though she had visible service 'mon tags. Is there a reason they're so fussy about that?
from what i understand, amity square is a private establishment owned by a man named mr. backlot and not a feature provided by the city of hearthome. he is therefore allowed to make whatever stipulations about the pokemon allowed onto his property that he wants, regardless of how pointless those stipulations seem. i guess he has preferences for certain pokemon?
that being said, by sinnoh law certified assistance pokemon must be allowed into any establishment open to the public. provided that your tangela meets the requirements set in place by the MHLW, she is legally entitled to enter with you. i've heard of people with service pokemon in sinnoh being turned away from establishments because of a lack of understanding of the region's laws, so you might need to bring that up to the owner. if he persists, though, you can report the establishment to the ministry.

A long time ago I sketched an idea I had of how pokemon could act as service animals. I came across that sketch recently and wanted to revisit it, so here is a seeing eye espeon using its psychic abilities to show its trainer the surrounding area. I used to have a service dog so it means a lot to me to have some representation of service animals in pokemon, and Detective Pikachu did disabilities a disservice.

What if Lance has an Altaria that’s trained as a service Pokemon to calm people down and comfort them. You just sink into the soft fluff and are sung a soothing lullaby. Having a panic attack? It’s hug Altaria time. Altaria cuddles are the cure to depression.
Altaria is constantly snitching on Silver because she can sense when he’s feeling distressed and will stick to him like glue. And Silver has no idea why this Pokemon is nuzzling up to him. Or why Lance is asking him how he’s doing when he told him a million times that he’s fine
Lance doesn’t tell Silver about Altaria being a trained service Pokemon because he knows Silver would get defensive about it. He’d think of it was a sign of “weakness”. So Lance just says Altaria must really like Silver.
Until one day Clair accidentally spills the beans. With the tact of a sledge hammer. She sees Altaria sticking to his side all the time and is like “jeez kid how fucked up are you?” and Silver won’t let her leave until she explains lol. And Lance is like gdi Clair
Silver was secretly touched Altaria liked him so much. Until he found out the real reason why she stuck by him was because she could tell he was stressed tf out. And his feelings are hurt (but he’ll never admit it)
“I’m not upset about it” Silver says as Altaria is still trying to cuddle him despite him pushing her away. “It’s just her doing what Lance trained her to do, she doesn’t actually like me”
But Altaria actually does grow fond of Silver outside her “job”. He’s her baby chick. Eventually Silver will allow the Altaria cuddles, and even seek her out when he’s feeling anxious. Lance gets very emotional when he finds both of them snuggled up together and snoring on the couch and sends a million pictures to Clair and the Elite 4.

I am getting back into pokemon (and by extension getting my partners and our pet dragon boy into it as well) So we've been talking about who we would all be in the pokemon world :)
I think I'd train service pokemon, and my pokemon would help me teach! Sylveon helps teach emotional support, Kirlia is physical disability support (She also has future sight so she can predict any falls or bumps) and Arcanine teaches pokemon that need a mix of both! Absol is there to help predict when you might have an illness that needs IMMEDIATE attention, or it could get much, much worse!
Me and my friend have been talking all day about different pokemon and which ones would be good service pokemon, and it's been so fun!!! For example, how an Arcanine or Growlith could help my girlfriend by warming up here sore places, and also using her as a walking assist as a growlithe, or even a mount as an Arcanine, since she was sad that she felt like she wouldn't be able go on a pokemon adventure with her disability. I've just been having a blast with the concept, so if anyone wants to share ideas, please add in reblogs or comments!!!!

...Part of me would love to get an Absol as a service Pokemon. That kind of prediction to know when a loud noise or other kind of panic attack inducing thing would be insanely useful.
But at the same time, like. I already have two Pokemon to take care of now? I don't even know how to care for an Absol.

I will on occasion take some of our residents out to socialise. This has typically been great for their mental wellbeing, but I have made a new discovery that I will be placing in my notes. Don't go into the soup aisle.

They have been crying for a while now. I won't be telling them about Spaghetti-Os.

So... I'm looking into getting a service pokemon. Ideally for emotional support regarding trauma and dissociation, as well as physical support when in my human form. Is there anything I should look for in particular? Or any ideas on where to look?

Someone in a discord server I'm in shared a link of different drawings of service Pokemon; and honestly, if I was in the Pokemon world, I'd want one that was physically strong enough to carry me if I fell, passed out, or was having too much pain that day;
So I drew a Machoke with a service vest. I like the idea that I had this Machoke before shit hit the fan and he took it upon himself to help, so we made the vest together and he put the different patches on. The hat on top says 'Pokemon At Work', with the patch saying 'DO NOT DISTRACT'; He's blue skinned with his vest being tones of grey, with orange stripes for catching others attention.

Made some refs for Frankie's team! She doesn't battle with either of her pokemon, they are service pokemon.
Feebie, the Togekiss, was given to her as a Togepi while she was recovering from her amputation to help her mentally. Much like Emotional Support Animals, Feebie's primary job is to comfort Frankie and calm her down. Feebie can tell when Frankie is experiencing phantom limb pain to offer support. She will lay on top of her to ground her when she's panicking or anxious, much like a weighted blanket. I imagine Fairy types are common Emotional Support Aids in the pokemon world. Another option for Frankie would've been a Riolu/Lucario, but that evolution line has high energy requirements that Frankie wouldn't have been able to manage.
Michael mostly makes her life easier by retrieving items for her. It's helpful to have another set of "hands" while she's tinkering in her freetime or performing maintenance. She's had Michael since before she was old enough to be a trainer. The only indication it recognizes she lost an arm is the fact it will carry her prosthetic when she's not wearing it. Michael was registered as a service pokemon after Frankie's amputation not because its particularly helpful, but so that she can't be told to recall her pokemon when she travels.
I really enjoy thinking about the various ways pokemon can function as aids! I think the Rockruff line would be particularly helpful for fainting and chronic fatigue, as many service dogs today can smell when their owner is about to pass out, including for disorders like narcolepsy.
Sylveons would be particularly good emotional support and seeing-eye pokemon because they can guide their trainers with their ribbons. Though, I imagine all the Eeveelutions would be good emotional support aids. The friendship evolutions would be most common.

Love service Pokémon! I feel like Indeedee is practically made for it. They would be an excellent helper.
100% AGREED. loveeeee this idea, the more I thought about it the better it seemed. Headcanons below :)
Indeedee are probably the most popular service pokemon in Galar. You can bring an Indeedee anywhere with you because most people assume if you have one it's a service pokemon
They naturally want to serve others, so training is extremely easy. I like to think that in some places, you can actually do it yourself, which makes them the cheapest and most accessible service pokemon for a lot of people. Plus they're good at a lot of things from physical to mental assistance, so unless you have a specific service niche that requires something like an electric type or a very bulky fighting type, the likelihood is that an Indeedee is the most practical option for you
They're on the smaller side, bipedal, and can fit on the average person's lap, so they're considered in the ideal size bracket for service pokemon. Plus, they're very polite, so there is almost nowhere that has issues with accommodating their presence which makes things really easy
Normal type makes them safe in all environments, indoors and outdoors, and their psychic typing gives them the intelligence and foresight to be extremely flexible in any scenario without being overwhelmed
I mentioned this in the Galarian ponyta post, but I think psychic types' ability to predict things and understand their trainer's emotions is vital and allows pokemon like Indeedee to help nonverbal trainers or assist in a scenario with communication isn't feasible or possible
Because they have dainty lil paws and thumbs I think they're an ideal pokemon for those who need help more detail oriented tasks. Indeedee might not be suited for more intense mobility aiding, but they can open bottles, float things from high shelves, remind you to take your meds, etc. I think if you train one well enough you can teach it to write emails
All in all yeah agreed Indeedee is prolly one of the best service pokemon there is. Super adaptable to a wide variety of tasks, good at emotional and physical assistance, easy to train, and just plain cute. going to be thinking about this for days

Your siblings Furfrou is so patient. And also long suffering. What a character, I adore them!
that's because chouchou is a service pokemon! he's trained to help my sibling manage their bipolar disorder and keep them from getting into bad situations when their mood is disregulated. he's an extremely good boy.
here he is wearing his lab goggles for when he goes into work with them!

Hi! I have a service animal sylveon to help with my cPTSD and he's doing a great job with my emotions, flashbacks, calming me and even relieving psychosomatic pain!
However he isn't the best help with my low energy and nightmares. Are there any ghost or psychic types that could help with that? Bonus points for helping my partner with adhd :)
Please note that we have a Sprigatito and Vaporeon pets at home too. One is skittish and the other is very easy going.
Of course! There are plenty of Pokemkn that would help you, and fit in with your family.
1. Munna
Tumblr media
Munna is probably the best option here, since they eat dreams. There are a special breed of them that were bred to eat nightmares.
2. Espeon
Tumblr media
Espeon are very calm and mame great emotional support pokemon.
3.Drowzee
Tumblr media
They can eat any dreams, including nightmares, without getting sick. However, a lot of trainers find these mon creepy, and I understand if you don't like them
4. Golett
Tumblr media
Golurk as well, but those things are super big, and a Golett is easier to care for. Golett are very protective Pokemon, and will do a lot to help or comfort their trainers.
I hope these help! I know it's mostly psychic types, btu ghost types don't do that well for helping with PTSD. But if you can think of helpful ghost types, please tell me.
