Your local selkie tumblogger not the best at taking pretty photos but I had to show you all this new book called A Sweet Sting of Salt that I just got for my lesbian book hoard, because it's about a selkie! If you're familiar with the fisherman's wife story then you can guess what the selkie is dealing with. I'm so excited to read this!

October 16: the tide from the shore
three hundred years
wasn’t enough.
my long-term love,
my selkie-lover —
I’ll be waiting for you
in that body of water.

this is Koitsuma (which translates to “Koi Wife”), who is based on Selkies from Scottish folklore. If youre interested on the original legend, ive put it under the cut :)
this is @lilozzy’s character, btw ;)
In your typical Selkie folk-tale, a man steals a female selkie's skin and finds her naked on the sea shore. In seeing how beautiful she is he is compelled to make her his wife. When he has do so, she spends her time in captivity longing for the sea. Over the years, she bears several children by her human husband. But one day, when she re-discovers her skin she immediately returned to the sea abandoning the children she loves.
There are several different versions of the story. Some key differences are:
One of her children discovers/knows the whereabouts of her skin
It is revealed that she already had a first husband who was also a Selkie
In some children's versions of the story, the Selkie wife will revisit her family on land once a year, but-
In one version, the Selkie wife is never seen again in human form, but her children would witness a large seal approach them and "greet" them
