2023

Three clarifications: 1) all my opinions are completely subjective and based entirely on my feelings, 2) I definitely left out a lot of what I wanted to write, and I will probably remember it after the New Year lol 3) The Sign wins all the best categories, BUT the series isn't over yet. I included it in my list anyway (I also included Twins)

Unfortunately, 2023 is me continuing the trend started in 2022, i.e. dropping the series, sometimes even just before the finale. There are about 35 series I dropped this year (!!!!!). Some of them I literally stopped watching the moment MLs appeared on the screen, like Dinosaur Love. Sorry but nope. Why is this happening? Perhaps because of the huge number of series. Before, I watched everything, even the worst productions, because I simply had no choice. Now there are so many new series, also so many great older series that I can come back to with pleasure, that I don't regret dropping something, that in the past I would have forced myself to watch until the end. Life is too short to waste it on mid series 🤷‍♀️

My list:

Perfect relationships: Our Dating Sim, Jun&Jun, The 8th Sense, Love in Translation, MickTop - My Universe, The Sign, Twins, Our Dining Table, Sing My Crush, um, Destiny Seeker 😄

Perfect relationships minus this one thing (usually an awkward kiss, sorry, this is very important to me): Unitentional Love Story, Laws of Attraction. WHY. These are not Sotus times, it's 2023, there are no excuses, learn to kiss, it's the easiest thing to DO

Many series disappointed me, but most of all, the one in which I had such great hopes: Chains Of Heart, come ON, this series had EVERYTHING to become one of the best series this year!!

Characters most harmed by the plot: Boston and Babe. I will also never forgive Between Us for what they did to the most awesome couple ever: WinTeam

Interesting series that pleasantly surprised me with how different and unique they are: Be My Favorite, Bake Me Please

Series that I have watched until the end, that are a complete waste of time and that I have bad memories of: Step by Step and La Puie

Characters that were just plain awful and that I would avoid in real life: first and foremost, of course, that EUN JI bitch and Tae Hyung (The Eighth Sense) also Sangin (Sing My Crush), practically everyone from Only Friends, Phat and Saengtai (La Pluie), Pat (SBS), Wen (Moonlight Chicken), Charlie. I'm not writing about terrible parents, there were a lot of them this year

The craziest series I've watched anyway: Till The World Ends 🥳

It's been a year of shows about workplace romance, but only a few managed to portray it in a good, even cute way without creepy power imbalance: Jun&Jun, ODS, Love in Translation, probably Cherry Magic (still airing)

New stars✨ that rocked my 💖: Daou (LiT), Babe (The Sign), Frame (Twins), Guide (IFYLIA, Bake Me Please) and Mark Pakin, my king 👑

My obsessions this year: Jae Won (The 8th Sense), Charn (LoA), Yang (Love in Translation), Im Han Tae (Sing My Crush), Sprite, THARN and Phaya. Overall, 2023 was full of characters who were a wonderful mix of pathetic and crazy in love and who made me feel like 🥺😍😭🥳. These were the men (and boys) mentioned above, but also Yoon Tae Joon (Unintentional Love Story), Cheng (Chains of Heart), Pisaeng (BMF), Tinn (My School President), Mick (My Universe). I love all of them 💖

Hot guys 🔥: ok, there were a lot of them this year, but definitely Chi Jun (Jun&Jun), Yang (LiT), Im Han Tae (SMC), Palm (NLMG), Songkhram (Destiny Seeker), Way and Alan (Pit Babe), Yoon Tae Joon (Unintentional Love Story), Mark Pakin in all his roles, obviously Tharn and Phaya ✨

Characters that I always look at with fondness, that I watched with real pleasure,, who brought only high-quality content and made this year better for me: Tharn, Phaya and their friends (YAI), Tinn, Charn and their friends (NAWIN and the girls), Mick (MU), main couples from SMC, Jun & Jun, ODC and LiT, Our Dining Table, Yoon Tae Joon (Unintentional Love Story), MR. TIWSON 👑, Peach, Sprite (every time I write the names Peach and Sprite I crave a fruity drink 🍹)

Hottest scenes 🔥: everything that is happening in the PhayaTharn universe so far, and

With so many series from Thailand, surprisingly few made a huge impression on me, the same in the case of characters or couples that I was obsessed with and which I would happily rewatch many times. I was even more surprised by Korea, which, with an incomparably smaller number of series, still created real gems, fantastic couples and interesting, liked characters. It was Korea that gave me probably the most interesting character this year: Jae Won. Although Thailand shot a Tharn-shaped arrow straight into my heart at the very end of the year 💘

It was a very good year, hope 2024 will be even better. What I wish for myself and all of you, my lovely jellyfish bolsters 😘😘😘😘😘

I wanted to thank everyone here for being so awesome this year, everyone who wrote great reviews and funny posts and notes, everyone who worked hard to gif the best scenes and who promoted the series fiercely. I watched many of my favorite series only thanks to your gifs. I love you all so much, you are the best! 🥰

Golden Wildfire Ch 9

Spoilers for GW up to Ch 9 below.

STORY

Edelgard makes no progress in the war. More news at 6.

Wow, 6 month time-skip. Part 1 finished. Didn't think we were getting another time-skip, but with Edelgard licking her wounds, it makes sense because no one tries to murder anyone when she stays in her own country.

"End of the Alliance" - sounds ominous.

Oh. It's now a Federation. Like Star Trek. But shady as fuck. Because Claude just crowned himself king so he could take more control. Weird how everyone just accepts this. It doesn't really fit the narrative that people don't trust Claude.

So . . . Edelgard's war actually made the Alliance less progressive 😅. Because now the Liecester is just a monarchy.

Claude didn't tell Shez, lamo. It really feels like these two aren't close at all. I feel like Shez is closest to Dimitri -> Edelgard -> Claude.

It would be nice if this was an Alliance focused part and not about Edelgard's nonsense anymore.

There's trouble in Alliance territory with areas that didn't want King Claude and they're rebelling. Honestly, don't blame them. Ohhh, they want to join Faerghus. They like King Dimitri better. Agreed.

This really is heading towards an Edelgard Claude team up, isn't it? With the people who don't want to bow to king Claude wanting to leave and join the Kingdom. Welp, at least it'll be different. And hey, Claude's funeral, not Dimitri's so what do I care? As long as it's interesting and different from VW.

Don't blame Claude for wanting to put down the unrest. Happy not everyone drank the Claude kool-aide. And don't blame anyone for wanting to leave the Alliance. It's kind of a no one is the bad guy here (except Edelgard), unlike with Dimitri with the Western Lords where they are definitely the bad guys.

I don't trust Claude farther than I can throw him though.

MAP/SIDE QUESTS

This "battle suggestions" is interesting, but it makes it seem like Shez is in charge of the whole army lol.

Can someone explain how the "merc whistle" works? It seems like you can take someone's special ability and give it Shez. But you could also equip it on someone else? So I could make someone else invulnerable like Lorenz if I gave it to him? But that person's "ability" goes away? Anyone have a list of what those abilities are exactly?

You can actually tell Claude you don't support his actions (or are unsure). Edelgard routes could never.

NPC says the minor lords now get no say in what happens.

Yep, here it goes. Claude's meeting with Edelgard to ally with her again. At least here Claude's calling out her shit on attacking them for no reason.

Edelgard is so two-faced, denying that her end goal is take over.

"We'll take tangible resources over insincere apologies any day." - Lamo, Claude, if you know she's a two-faced, insincere liar why on earth are you doing this?

I like this version of it better since at least Claude seems like he has two brain cells at least. In SB, he really came across like Edelgard's mindless bitch.

Now he's calling her out for creating her BS southern church lol. Holst called it an "obvious sham."

Arval said Edelgard wouldn't even acknowledge Shez's existence.

Shez is actually not supporting Claude's decisions in cannon.

See, this makes it WAY more interesting. SB/CF cram what you should think down your throat (SB less than CF, but still doing it), but GW is giving it more nuance.

I think I can say GW is by far my 2nd favorite right now.

Oh, another time limit one! I liked that in the paralogue.

Hurt having to fight the Kingdom again.

Judith also calls out Claude, saying he's talking about people's lives like they're just pieces on a chessboard.

Marianne and Ignatz are also upset.

"You let the Empire talk you into buying the whole store." - Judith

Claude claims he's using the Empire right back. I'd like to see how. Like, I think GW is a way more interesting take on this, but I'm honestly super confused why he thinks this is a good idea for the Alliance.

Lorenz also said he's throwing the Kingdom to the wolves for no reason.

Claude drags up ancient history as an excuse. Which is hysterical since recent history the Empire just killed Alliance people.

Seems like Claude just hates the church and that's why he's siding with Edelgard. Even though that leaves it really easy for her to take over and she said she would through non-military means later.

Claude is a complete dumbass here, but at least it's interesting.

Aww, Shez checked on Shamir, making sure she's ok fighting Catherine. This game really ships Shamir x Catherine and I'm here for it.

Shit. I missed Claude x Hilda's B Support. Did I miss something amazing? Does this mean I'll have to play GW again? Not sure I care enough. I like them both well enough and all, but I can really only see myself replaying AG. IDK, maybe one day.

Anyone else find it shady that Claude is killing any noble who doesn't want to follow his new system? I get it, but that's sus as hell. It's esp funny because the Empire is trying to smear Dimitri for taking out the Western lords (who all helped in a genocide), but their allies doing the same to not-evil people is fine.

CLAUDE & SHEZ B SUPPORT

This is going to be funny with how openly Shez isn't trusting Claude right now lol.

They're just talking about him being king and how Shez first suggested that the Alliance had a king.

Claude wants to open up to Shez because she doesn't have any strings attached.

Talking more about Shez's mystery mom who just died of illness. Then she got kicked out by everyone else. Wonder why?

SHEZ & HILDA B SUPPORT

Hilda still lecturing Shez on charging to the front lines, but thinks Shez is skilled enough to handle it.

Hilda compares it to Holst who also leads the charge, unlike most leaders who stay in the back.

Hilda doesn't think her brother is capable of dying because no one is good enough to kill him, and now thinks the same for Shez. No one told the poor woman about arrows.

Hilda now fights more up front but denies it.

Shez can tell Hilda her cheerleading annoys people, lamo.

Welp, that explains why she's ok with attacking innocent people and continuing war because rHeA bAd, because she's convinced herself the people she loves can't die. Ummm. Ok.

SHEZ & LORENZ A SUPPORT

I feel like Lorenz got flanderized a bit in this game. Like, there's not much to any of his supports so far but "I am noble, so I am better." I honestly don't care much about him, but he had more depth in Houses.

Shez expects Lorenz to complain more. But he's just her to brag about why he's grown stronger.

She can assume he did it to get the ladies lol.

But nope, of course not, it's because he's a noble and a noble is better than commoners than he needs to be stronger than her.

He wants Shez to get in trouble so he can rescue her. Ugh.

Shez says that Lorenz fulfilled his oath to get stronger bc Shez only does what she does bc she relies on allies.

That was really one-dimensional, and Lorenz was just unlikeable in it.

HOLST & BALTHUS A SUPPORT

Oh, Hilda's here. So they just squeezed her in his support with Holst to excuse giving her a support with Balthus.

Hilda is worried that Holst is acting weird and thinks Balthus might be behind it because they've been hanging out.

Hilda is convinced that Holst is uncurroptable because he only like things that are just. Balthus seems to hint otherwise.

Seems like Holst is DRUNK. Or just being cringy. Hilda's mad that Balthus set her up so Holst could listen in.

Hilda's embarrassed, understandably.

Holst calls Hilda his "hope." Yeah, I get why she's annoyed.

CLAUDE & LORENZ A SUPPORT

Lorenz points out that his family has always been friendly with the Empire, so this change is no big deal.

He accuses Claude of just copying his father.

He says House Gloucester should rule and not Claude, and says he will be the next king.

Claude accuses Lorenz of his ego being out of control.

Claude suggests letting the people of the Alliance pick the king. Lorenz thinks it's silly until he changes his mind.

Lorenz, rightly, points out that Claude's new position in precarious and its success or failure is on Claude.

Claude is a doo-doo bird though. He thinks that the Empire and King in Adrestia and Faerghus, respectively, are upheld because of "the Goddess's blessing" and not, you know, really complex stuff. Like, both Edelgard and Dimitri face getting thrown out in the two games over things that have NOTHING to do with religion.

That's weird, their support had a picture.

SHEZ & LYSITHEA B SUPPORT

Lysithea feels that their relationship is strained and wants to clear the air. Shez didn't even notice lol.

Shez is a pretty simple character, but I like it.

Oh, wow, Lysithea realized she acted like a brat and apologized. This self-awareness makes me like her a LOT better.

Aw, Shez is helping Lysithea feel mature and older. But then put her foot in her mouth when she referred to people under Lysithea's command as "real adults" lol. Lysithea struggled but kept her head!

Honestly, I like this a lot for Lysithea. Character flaws are great, but they're annoying as shit when they're not acknowledged properly (I still get flashbacks to her awful Ignatz support), but when they're used to show growth, that flaw is suddenly sooo much better.

SHEZ & LEONIE B SUPPORT

Leonie wants mercenary advice.

Lamo, Leonie thinks the bow isn't good enough to be a first-class mercenary. Homegirl's been watching too many movies and not reading enough military history. Mounted archers were unmatched.

So now they're just discussing over specialization vs versatilty.

It's kinda nice seeing Shez in a mentor role.

SHEZ & MARIANNE A SUPPORT

They go out to eat together. Marianne didn't eat her meat and Shez is concerned.

Marianne is now determined to believe she doesn't curse people around her.

Shez encouraged Marianne to just be herself, which Marianne wants but worries about her father.

Marianne accused Shez of talking without thinking and thought it was a good thing lol.

BALTHUS & LORENZ B SUPPORT

Lorenz absolved Balthus of his debts to House Gloucester.

Lorenz credits it to Balthus helping and saving Lorenz on the battlefield.

Lamo, I forgot that Balthus investigated Claude and claimed he found all kinds of dirty laundry.

Lorenz wants him to hold onto it so he can use it later to unseat Claude and take over the Alliance instead.

Balthus is upset Lorenz isn't a lady because he's impressed with him being a scoundrel lol.

MAIN BATTLE

Hahahaha lamo, the Knight of Serios are beating Edelgard's army, which has to be like 5x bigger.

Oh - led by Randolph, THAT explains it. Against Catherine? Pft. Catherine wouldn't even consider that a bout it's so one-sided.

Shez still doesn't understand what Claude's doing. I'm not the only one who thinks these two aren't even remotely close, right? I feel like Shez is way more invested in Edelgard and Dimitri, and like Claude's just some dude who hired her.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Claude legit just left Randolph to die, lamo.

I think we just killed Catherine :(

😂😂😂 Edelgard's forces got wiped out. Randolph is really the punching bag of Fodlan. They should've made it Dorothea or something if they wanted us to give a shit.

Yep, time for Claude to get chewed out. As if Randolph isn't foaming at the mouth to invade the Alliance in SB.

It's funny how offended everyone is. As if this didn't happen in real life all the time. I mean, they'd only be mad a noble died because you can make money taking them as hostage.

Is this evil!Claude, the route? Like because he was such a goody-goody in Houses? I still think it's funny it's always Randolph.

Deltarune Secret Boss Dump

hi so I realized I had a bunch of crazy silly guys, and again, I’m sorry for no ice-es chapter take but I have ice-es SBs so let’s begin!!

Canniballa, Flower King

So I made this one, a long time ago lol. She’s a cannibalistic chef cockroach thing, and who should be the rightful leader of the Four Flower Kingdom. I think someone else drew this design after a poll or something, if I find it I’ll show you all :) in the light world, she’s a dead bug Asgore stepped on and forgot to throw away.

2. Dewla Man, (Ice-Es)

Dewla Man is probably the 5th Ice-Es Secret Boss I’ve made. I might show the others some other time, I still like them. In the light world, he’s a Soda Mascot. If you don’t know who Dewla Man is an obvious parody of, it’s Pepsi man. PLEASE look him up. Anyways, he was a star, … in the light world. In the dark world, he’s a fired Mail guy in the CEOs Big Office (Yes, that’s what it’s called, the ICE-EO is the most boring main boss) who knows what he’s told out to be in Commercials, and hates that he can’t live up to that.

3. CRAZY DAN (Berdlys House)

CRAZY DAN is an old PC game turned grubby pay-to-win game, that Berdly wrote a whole 25 page essay about. He is referred to as the “smoke man” by locals of the Gamer world. (I don’t have a name-) and is slowly being turned into a parasitic monster.

4. Spilkin (Sans.)

he’s spoiled milk in the light world. He’s silent, and follows the main baddie of the sans chapter, the Mayor. He throws cereal in battle… that’s all I care to say right now.

Cavendish and The Little Prince

In Chapter 784 "Gear Four" Oda forestalls the reveal of Luffy's new form to emphasize he and Law as the "eye of the storm" to follow Doffy's defeat through the words of Cavendish "The Pirate Prince."

But given the implicitness of that conclusion; the scene more so exists as character building for Cavendish.

Sitting criss-cross amongst the chaos grants him a very understated character moment for Cavendish and the reader to just "be" and soak in the beauty and adventure of Dressrosa; a feeling the anime expertly captures.

Displaying concern and appreciation outside of self from a character who's core gag/drive is self-absorbenent; putting his own place on the seas into perspective.

But there's more too it.

Cavendish's archetype is that of the White Knight/Knight Errant in European lit/mythos; his epithets being a verbalization of that fact.

Dressrosa is One Piece's analogue for Spain-

Cavendish's name is English in etymology and his real world namesake "Thomas Cavendish" the privateer is partly known for his raids of Spanish ships.

He's the former prince of the Borgeoise Kingdom, hailing from Rommel where himself as Hakuba became known as their slicing winds (a Kamitachi; a Yokai in Japanese mythos) alluding to Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde and Jack The Ripper as you may know, both English refrences.

His former kingdoms name shares it's etymology with Mary Geoise in the French word Borgeosie and Cavendish's aesthetics/rapier are very Musketeer/French.

His weapon/attacks are all references to European mythos/lit/plays.

-Durandal a French blade of legend

-Round Table (King Arthur)

-Blue Bird

-Biken: Zan t-Exupéry

-Precious Metal Axe

The tontattas/fairies being another tie to literature and mythos.

Given that pastiche it's notable that Oda chose Cavendish to sit in a childlike manner and note one of the two most fantastical aspects of the arc in the "dwarves" (the other being the toys).

It taps into the feelings fantasy ferments in children and the inspirations behind Oda's writing, in a land where Doflamingo has cast a cruel veneer over the settings beauty.

A recent realization on my part is on the fourth attack listed above "Biken: Zant t-Exupéry" or

"Beautiful Sword: Stardust Prince."

The attack's name coming from French novel "The Little Prince-" and it's author; a childrens novel dealing with space, a loss of imagination in adulthood, love and loss and the human experience more broadly.

The titular character being the lonely, blonde "little prince" of an asteroid where he resides and tends to his love.

A thorny, vain, rose that "The Little Prince" knows not how to love properly until they've lost each other and he learns to see the uniqueness in those he values through their worth to one another vs outside validation/being a lone rose.

Cavendish is first seen with a red rose and his attacks often have rose petals swirling around him.

He's a blonde prince, exiled from his home with his animal companion Farul (The Little Prince tames/makes a companion of a fox on his journey).

From Oda's SBS we know that he also carried roses as a child and in a cover page we see him tending to a garden of roses with Farul, his vivre card lists roses as his favorite food, making it clear that Cavendish and roses is imagery Oda is intentionally/continuously associating him with.

Knowing this all; I propose that Cavendish's character is partly inspired by The Little Prince (the novel/character) in his design, own emotional makeup having aspects of various figures in the book, and the tapping into child-like wonder described above as the Little Prince's narrator is a man at risk of losing that imagination, as multiple adults seen through the stories pages already have.

Also:

-The stars on his pants are similar to the stars on the little princes coat which is also similar to Cavendish's coat

-They both use rapiers

It makes me wonder what Cavendish's childhood was like; if there was any lonliness, whether there's anything to be said abolut the potential of "taming" Hakuba and growing in self-love/past his obsession with uniquness.

Of course there's much more to his character than a single inspriation and differences to see between him and The Little Prince but I'll definitely keep the story in mind going forward.

Don't Steal The Beef! (For episodes 7 and 8 of King of Masked Singer, Jen goes on the show as a guest judge, shocked to see Taeil revealed and fangirls over Ailee. BTS are back on Weekly Idol. Jennie watches a video message that an idol made on the show as she looks forward to making another friend.)

Distressed (Jen briefly goes home to see her family but things go downhill when sasaengs decide to follow her and crash her sister’s big performance) Some angst but ends with Jungkook major fluff!

Payback (BTS film For You. Hobi and the Maknae Line prank Jen to piss her off by acting loud on purpose while she slept. Jennie gives them a taste of their own medicine by using pots and pans to wake them up. Jungkook is on edge as he anticipates Jen's move to prank him.) Remember Bad Girls Club? With Tanisha? I got inspiration from that for Jen's prank! Jungkook fluff!

Dope (BTS film and promote Dope. Jen supports Black Lives Matter and talks to Namjoon about his comment about Tae and J-Hope's "too black" skin color. Jen reveals a hidden talent and celeb crush during SBS PopAsia TV.) some angst but ends fluffy!

One Person Won't Ruin This (Jen figures out a way to meet with the NY VIP fans despite the Hi-touch being canceled due to threats to Rapmon. When hanging with Kevin, Jen forgets about her outing with Jungkook.) fluff but also angst in this one :(

I Think I Love Her (The members notice tension with Jennie and Jungkook. Jennie shuts down dating rumors from AllKpop. Jungkook vents to Jimin about his feelings for Jennie)

Rekindle (Jungkook finds the perfect way to ask Jennie for forgiveness as each member of BTS help out. Jen starts getting jealous for a change. JenKook finally get the members back for taking photos of them while sleeping on the plane.) One of my FAVS! Absolute CHEESE AND FLUFF with all members with MAJOR Jungkook fluff! :) I love this one soooo much! I always thought of this one as one of my best chapters. It's so cute. I love rereading it.

BTS Run Episodes 1,2 & 3 ( BTS compete to be the best man/woman and hang out at an amusement park.)

BTS GAYO Track 1 & 2 (The members go through a Girl Group dance quiz and attempt to answer the correct song by listening to lyrics)

Tension Escalator (BTS have an Undercover Mission in Japan. For the tension escalator, Jen watches with nervousness and assumes Jungkook won't do anything drastic but is instantly proved wrong.)

Fan Signs (BTS attend a fansign and Jennie deals with more discrimination as OT7 supporters skip and ignore her during the fan sign. Jennie meets and hangs with Sam Okyere) some angst but ends in fluff!

ISAC 2015 Chuseok Special (Jen shows off her studio and gets noticed by her celeb crush. Volleyball becomes a new competition for the ladies at ISAC as Jen finds it to be her calling while the guys dominate in running.) One of my favs!!

Running Man: The Golden Duo (Due to popular demand, Jennie is asked to guest star in a Couples themed Episode of Running Man, bringing Jungkook with her to go up against other groups of two.) MAJOR Jungkook fluff and things get suggestive at the end with some suggestive Jungkook content! One of my favs!

Which is my favorite Kdrama network?

When I'm bored I like to list and categorize things. Today I've decided to discover, statistically, which Korean drama network is my favorite based on shows I've watched.

Including both shows I've completed and shows I've dropped bc in this case, the shows I don't like are relevant.

The takeaways:

I should probably watch more KBS. On my to-watch list, that translates to Youth of May, the Bridal Mask, Hwarang, the Bloody Heart, and Orange Marmalade. So mostly historical dramas, which is a pity bc apparently I also like their thrillers.

Really, though, my to-watch list at this point has a ton of SBS and MBC on it for some reason, at least with shows that have already come out. According to my stats so far, my odds are pretty mixed on liking them or not.

Somehow, one feels, I will actually end up watching more TVN instead... but that has yet to materialize. (except the one kdrama I'm currently watching is a TVN drama. so.)

I just finished writing this ask and I’m so sorry it ended up so long. While I’d love to read more of your insight, please feel free not to post this if you think it takes up too much of your blog space. I don’t know where to edit it as one idea sort of flowed into another. Whether you post this and respond or not, I hope you have a good day/week.

I think part of what made Jensen's portrayal of Dean feel so real and compelling is that he truly liked, then loved, Jared since a good chunk of Dean's character is his love for Sam. That isn’t to say that Jensen didn’t bring his own unique flavor to Dean or play him very well in other aspects because he’s a popular character for a reason beyond Jensen's looks, but I think the fact that he and Jared were close helped. A lot. For the most part, I found the most emotional and compelling scenes by both Jared and Jensen to be the ones they shared with each other (not all, of course, but most). However, I feel a very slight disconnect between them in the latest seasons. They still have amazing chemistry, but it’s not the palpable level it was in earlier seasons, at least to me. I think Jared got tired and put up boundaries with Jensen, and Jensen got resentful (and bought into his own hype) and they started to pull apart. Jensen’s ego didn’t need him bring "crowned" king of Bacchus, or whatever that was around that time. It could just be hindsight (I’m not immune to bias, especially as I started the show only a few years ago, then the prequel happened) but I think it noticeable that "Sam and Dean" don’t feel quite the same, even though I still love them. Even in the gag reels, while they are still funny, maybe even more so than earlier seasons, don’t feel as "real."

Anyway, my point with the above is, Jensen prides himself on going off instinct, acting more off the cuff, and enjoying "playing." These are all good skills to have, but they can’t be the ONLY tools one utilizes. It worked well with a Jared because they had a high level of comfort and intimacy and friends and long-term co-stars. In his new roles, Jensen isn’t playing opposite people he knows well and loves (or the role doesn’t lend itself to that, like SB), and the lack of connection comes through in his performances, or he is hit and miss. If he relies too much of his feelings or just letting the scene go where it does, but hasn’t done the background work of getting into his character’s head (as you’ve noted many times) then his portrayal can quickly go off course or lack focus / consistency. I still tend to mostly find him interesting to watch because he often does have a special spark, but SB was not as intense as he could be and Beau has some love,y moments but is inconsistent. I guess all of this rambling was just to say, I agree with the points you and anons have been making about Jensen.

Selfishly, I’m glad Supernatural went on for a long time because I love it, but it could have probably been more focused or maintained better quality if it ended by Season 12 or 13 at the latest (not on those story lines per se, but those amount of years). The show going for over 15 years didn’t really do Jared or Jensen any favors in the growth department. Jared got to play more variety of characters, but the last time he was anyone other than regular Sam (although a Sam has changed considerably from where he started) was season 9, and Dean, even after the mark of Cain in Season 10 was still just Dean, just slightly more open to Talking and more angry. He was Michael for about 4 episodes and that wasn’t overly focused or well-developed because the show runners were too lazy to give Jensen the guidance he asked for. So, the show wasn’t giving them a ton of room to stretch or play with new versions of their characters for quite a few years. It was safe, but not really a place for craft development for years. Frankly, the show was lucky that Jared and Jensen seemed to care as much as they did at the time because their chemistry (even if I think it wasn’t as strong as in earlier years, at times) was the only thing that kept the lazy Supernatural ship afloat.

If you or others disagree about their chemistry, I’d love to hear it. Maybe it’s just bias on my part.

Sadly, Jensen seems to have relied on being comfortable too much. I think he both resented that Jared's character was mostly the focus of the arcs (While this is understandable, he signed on to be second on the call sheet, so get over it.), and yet also resented the fact that Jared wanted out. Meanwhile, AAs and hellers are shrieking from the mountaintops that Dean is the best, Sam is boring, and Jensen is carrying the show (🙄). So, Jensen gets wind of at least some of the fan histrionics and buys into the notion that he’s the one making this ship sail. Meanwhile, Jared gets a holding deal with CBS and they decided to end the show if he’s going to be around. Then, they kill Dean and Sam lives (until he dies as an old man), killing off Jensen's lofty dreams of carrying on the Dean show as he mourns his dead brother in a badass, womanizing, drunken stupor. He probably thought it would be a success since EVERYONE knows Dean is the favorite and Jensen is the golden boy. But what he, and the AAs and hellers failed to bank on was that Sam AND Dean, Jared AND Jensen were what made the show work and beloved. Jensen is mad that Jared bailed and he (Jensen) didn’t get to pick up the first-building torch, but he should have realized that the show had been steadily declining in content for years and if he had just moved on gracefully, maybe discussed going a movie or shorter season in a few years WITH Jared, he would be in a better position today. He bought into his own hype and let his resentment build until he lashed out in a selfish and hurtful move with the terrible joke of a prequel. He’s like a spouse who lets their little resentments build until they get so angry that they feel justified in cheating and betray their significant other for some trashy new person, who is crass and cheap, and ends up leaving them and stealing all their money. (I’m not a tinhat, by the way, this just felt like an apt comparison.). Thus, he’s now known as professional on set (from all accounts I’ve heard), but unprofessional and disloyal on the greater scale, lazy as an EP, and a bad friend, who attached his name to a brand grab that is little more than a joke and an insult to the original show, its fans and his friend. Not a good look.

All this being sad, I don’t think Jensen is doomed in his career or even his friendship with Jared. If he humbles himself, stops bragging about himself and the roles he may or may not have been considered for, and starts memorizing his lines again and doing character work, picks a brand and sticks to it, he has the raw talent to still do well. On the other hand, I have no clue where he and Jared are in their friendship off camera. All I know is they do spend some time together beyond at cons, through people getting vids and pics of them, and they do seem to enjoy each other’s company on stage, and still make each other laugh. I think they can patch things up if Jensen acknowledge (or has) that what he did was sh*tty, but how can a friendship ever fully recover from a betrayal that big? Even if they still care about each other, and Jared seems very loyal, it might be a case of forgive but don’t forget. Jensen should have held on to those values fans still praise him for (however erroneously) of humility, groundedness and work ethic. I hope he genuinely had those qualities at one time because if he did, I believe he can get back to them, if he learns from the last two years.

As for the chemistry, I do agree, it started to dim at a certain point and it truly seemed Jensen was just going through the motions with his character. It's not uncommon for actors to go through phases where they feel disconnected from their craft and no longer into it so perhaps that was the case with Jensen, he failed to stimulate himself by deep diving into his craft and at some point got bored by repeating the same choices over and over again (as you said he runs on instinct but it's very easy to get tired of yourself when you do that). "Jensen’s ego didn’t need him bring "crowned" king of Bacchus, or whatever that was around that time." Danneel arranged for that to happen because she wanted to call herself Queen of New Orleans, her interest in doing that was also earning a standing for her own family to benefit financially due to the increase in image. She basically pretended to do something for Jensen, when in reality the end goal was boosting her family all along. Just like the sad prequel, the Bacchus thing was Danneel's suggestion. Funny how all the things she suggests always end up benefiting her and her family way more than Jensen, isn't it? Exactly, fans will only focus on co-stars raving but all professionals will look at how he handled things, the comments he made about Jared, Alba as well as the name dropping, complaining about roles or even worse trying to lay claim on roles he could never even be up for due to type mismatch which shows he has no preparation branding wise. Also, the fact that is constantly buzzed and promoting alcohol even out of context. All those things tell potential buyers he is a production risk. They will first and foremost look at his performances and because he often lacks credibility to due histrionic mannerisms and expressions and also lacks the required inner work to take a performance to the next level, he won't really be competition with the colleagues he so often likes to create comparisons to. I agree, he's definitely not doomed, it will take a lot of pure intention, clear focus followed by massive action but he can redeem his image and his relationship with Jared as well. So if any of you have been on my Twitter, you may know that I have (a lot of) Google Drive folders holding different performances that I’ve subbed for B1A4, OMG, and ONF and this here is the Masterlist for them having the links to the folders and describing what they all contain.
