personal opinion on the fic: This fic is different. First of all, there's not much romance in it, just a hint of SangCheng at the end. Not surprising since Jiang Cheng spends most of this fic as a dog. So it's NHS-centric, too. It's very heartwrenching, but also sweet and hopeful (and I'm not even a dog-person).

However I do think the anger directed at JC towards the end is a little unfair; he genuinly didn't realize. There's a hot little drunk make-out scene in the middle, that doesn't go too far (so the teen rating is still correct, in my opinion).

personal opinion on the fic: I really like the idea of the loss of a Golden Core being changed into not having cybernetic implants. I love the description of the AR technological world contrasted with the "old-fashioned" real worldness of JCs bar - it makes me wish I could actually see this (as film, animation, whatever). Plus it's always nice to have some uncle/nephew interaction and Nie Zonghui included. Yay for family. The mature rating is for the violence that the whole gang theme includes; I'm really bad with gore and violence and such but it hardly bothers me, so I'm sure most others will be fine.

JC and NHS slowly dance around each other, getting closer, and then again further away. I kind of wished the NSFW part was a little expanded, then again it also fits like this.

He does have his expertise and he's growing into his role. They both have their obvious traumas and weaknesses, too. I do love how clever NHS is in this, it's a joy to watch how he manipulates and no ones notices.

personal opinion on the fic: This is one of those fics where clearly the author pours in much knowledge about their interest. There's reference pics for yoga poses and all (it's pretty advanced yoga, though, so don't try this at home). NHS tries his hardest with flirting, but he is up against JCs insecurities. They dance around each other for a bit, but it's so sweet. It's seperated very conveniently into short chapters.

He's so noble that it'd be easy to condemn NHS for what he is doing, if it wasn't obvious that NHS is not unaffected. I so love the idea of the Crisis Blanket! Everyone should have one. This fic is not completed and has slow updates, but it's not abandoned.

personal opinion on the fic: Completely self-indulgent, but I love how everyone starts worrying about NHS. He even gets those infamous hugs from JC - since CQL this is something I'm jealous of. I love how the juniors crush on NHS, it's so cute and also hilarious. The time everyone spends together in Qinghe at the festival and in Lotus Pier, is so sweet to read with its family feels and budding love... Not everything goes smooth, though, there's a little more realistic approach to healing.

personal opinion on the fic: Everyone is mentioned in this fic, seriously, everyone, including Zonghui; there's kittens and even Wang Yizhou's thigh tattoo gets a mention, too. Personally I think that JC (often very relatable) and NHS (who stays mysterious throughout) feel a little OOC, though it may only be the vastly different setting. I do love the setting. I don't know a thing about the area in which this is set nor the surfing community, but it has a certain atmosphere I really like coming back to. (Somebody do a mood board?) The relationship between the siblings is really well done. When I first read this, my mother had a knee surgery, so a lot in this sounds familiar, especially how a lot of things that are normal to others are out of the question, and how overdoing it on good days can easily lead to bad days.

The problem is that WWX didn't inform JC of his plan - and it goes how you might expect it to; or even worse. But since the worst damage seems to already been done, JC decides "why not" and the deal is on until WWXs wedding.

personal opinion on the fic: The "JC is a martial arts instructor" content you didn't know you needed. NHS is so thirsting over JC in this, and he's taking us all on that trip with him. The growing casual intimacy between them is so lovely to read (I'm a little jealous, really). I was a little worried about the addition of an OC to the family, but it works. The big "oh!" moment is so cheesy, so tropey - and so, so good. There are a couple of flaws. Sometimes it tries too desperately to be woke, like there's some secret plan to squeeze in a whole modern sex ed curriculum, to the point that it feels like in school books when the authors try to put some kind of story around a math problem (in this case the other way around) but it ends up being awkward. The demisexuality of JC is really well done; some other parts not that much, in my opinion. The more obvious problem is of course the current status. I'm not surprised, it had this vibe the last couple of chapters... But if you don't mind the uncertain future, do read. Or you could always stop after chapter 42.

rules: give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.

(For simplicity's sake, I am choosing to only count completed fics... of which I have 95 in the MDZS/Untamed fandom, wtf?!)

1 - Most Hits - Think Outside the Shell - Yep, I am completely unsurprised that my first Nie Sect Murder Tortoise fic is #1. It seems to have scratched an itch many people had :D For those who haven't heart of/read it, it's a simple gen fic where, during the Wen indoctrination camp's trip to fight the tortoise of slaughter, NHS tames the xuanwu because apparently he already has one at home ;) This began my fun cracky series and will forever hold a special place in my heart.

2 - 2nd Most Kudos - When Fate Opens a Window, Let Us Fly Through It - I check my stats semi-regularly so technically this doesn't surprise me because of that, but it *does* surprise me how well-liked this fic was! It's NieLan, the first of my "Lan Ribbon Marriage" series. The plot? NMJ & LXC are teenagers and in love with each other but too married to their duties to do anything about it. They wake up in the middle of the night to find LXC's ribbon wrapped around both their wrists, and when LQR enters, NMJ finds out this is the first step of the Lan sect's marriage rites! The secret is that NHS & LWJ teamed up to tie them to each other and have them found out by LQR. It's cute and fun, and was a blast to write - and the series is complete with WangXian and SangHui follow-ups :D

3 - 3rd Most Comments - This category is the reason I chose to only include completed fics, because works in progress tend to get a lot of comments in general with people wanting to encourage the author to continue the story. So the answer is therefore... He's No Bully, He's My Friend - I adore this story and it's special to me, a modern day AU where NHS is homeless and comes across a pit bull that he befriends, and the dog turns out to be a cursed JC (It's SangCheng, but the shipping is minimal at the end after JC becomes human again, so if you prefer gen fic, you might enjoy this one). But this story in particular has a reason that it got so many comments - because the wonderful @takonxmz asked to podfic the story, and many people found their way to it through their recording (which is amazing and I totally recommend if you have an hour or so!!! There is art too!!!).

4 - 4th Most Bookmarks - I'm going to choose the list in my stats because those numbers include both public and private bookmarks (we can see how many there are, we just can't see who bookmarked the private ones) - Think Outside the Shell - My only surprise is that this one wasn't higher on the list! But a SangCheng, a SangYao, and (*checks eyesight*) a WangXian fic all came out ahead of it.

5 - 5th Most Words - I'd Rather Share With You - This is the WangSang fic I wrote for the 2 Cakes fest last year! NHS' first year at Gusu and a storm hits, damaging several homes of Lan disciples, who are all assigned visiting disciples' quarters to share - and LWJ is assigned to room with NHS. It's sweet and they're young and soft (and also petty, and definitely don't get along at first) and, yeah, it's a fun fic. (It's a good thing this tag came out now - later this month, I will have a 50k fic coming out that will skew all the stats lol)

Bonus - Fewest Words - Technically, my 3 lowest word counts aren't fics at all - they're the AO3 entries I did to show off my fanart for the RBB fest this year. So the lowest word count of an actual fic is... The Perfect Spiritual Pet - This is just a cute little gen fic where the One Braincell Trio create an array to find NHS the perfect spiritual pet in the hopes of getting NMJ off his case. They don't know what the animal is, but it's cute, lazy, and perfect for NHS (it's a 3-toed sloth).

Art for this fic started with a watercolor landscape of Lotus Pier and a small Jiang Cheng painted in gouache.

And when fwolfing picked who Jiang Cheng was exchanging messages with, I painted the other side, featuring Wei Wuxian at the Qinghe Nie tombs (read the fic to find out why he's there!!!)

Discussions about Wei Wuxian's latest message talisman inventions with fwolfing was a highlight for me, and this scene made me laugh so hard I choked on my tea. So of course I had to illustrate it. It's done in watercolor, gouache, and paper cutouts.

I keep thinking about nhs alive in 1920s NY speaking in some 1920s slang and I can't help but uhhhh picture him talking in a 1920s NY accent but is he FROM ny?!!!! 😂 a NY accent keeps popping up every time I read his lines out loud, and I'm not sure if that's weird, so I wanted to ask for some feedback!!!!

for jiangzaix3 I am finished recording the first two chapters and 2/3rds finished with the last chapter. I just have to edit in music! the accompanying Playlist is amazing! I also wanted to ask if you had any other additional songs or Playlist for the other three fics or if I should just pull from the one? Hello, my dear! 💜💜💜 I'm so excited to hear your podfics--prior to getting into MDZS, the only person I'd ever heard read my own work was me, so between you and the person recording "this humble fox" I'm practically basking in the exciting novelty of it.

Anyway, that's not a strange question at all, it's a very good one! No, despite his tendency to hang out in fashionable areas of New York City when he was alive, Huaisang is not from New York, he's actually from New Hampshire. The Nies emigrated to the USA significantly before any of the other cultivation clans and initially settled down in the White Mountains, where they made quite a lot of money as trappers. They eventually opened up the butcher shop rather further south in the actual populated areas, and Huaisang attended a private school, so I think the most appropriate accent for him would be what's called a Mid-Atlantic. If you're unfamiliar, look up clips from Bringing Up Baby on YouTube--Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are the shining examples of the early 20th century Mid-Atlantic accent, which was a very mannered, deliberate way of speaking. (The house Mingjue had built for him, the one into which Jiang Cheng eventually moves, is in Georgia, because Huaisang hates to be cold and loves to garden and placing him in Georgia meant the Jiangs could maybe keep an eye on him.)

The Yus, meanwhile, settled right outside Boston, in Newton, and Yu Ziyuan did her level best to instill her children with the value of speaking "properly," so Jiang Cheng speaks with...about half of a modern upper-class Boston accent, which shades into a more classic Southern when he relaxes, since he did grow up in Georgia. (The Southern accent gets noticeably more prominent when he's talking to/arguing with Wei Wuxian, who was born in Kentucky and spent the first seven or so years of his life learning to speak from Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze--Cangse had a thick accent, it was one of the things Yu Ziyuan disliked about her and her son after her.

As for music, the other three fics don't have specific playlists--"Jiangzai x3" was fully written in a sort of mad hallucinatory dash, and the playlist sprang up as part of that--but I do have general WangXian and XiYao playlists, if you'd like to look through those for inspiration, and of course all of the chapter titles for "Gimme Shelter" are themselves song titles. Unfortunately, I have sorely neglected Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang as far as playlists go, and I do need to remedy that. In the meantime, if it helps at all, Huaisang listened to a lot of jazz when he was alive--think Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, any luminary of the Harlem Renaissance who was recording before 1927--and loved to go out dancing. I'm honestly not sure what sort of music Jiang Cheng listens to, or if he habitually listens to much at all.

I’ve recently read “The Price of a Home” (and associated series) and “Hold You Like a Victory” and I was hoping you would know of any more fics that play with the concept of WWX being a whipping boy. This seems like something that easily fits into the canon Jiang family dynamic and there’s just so much potential for fleshing out this AU. I’m dying for more content with this premise. 14. I’m in the Mood For: Any fics where WWX submits to the Lans for cleansing in exchange for safety for the Wens. I read Decay by ante bunny and loved the premise, but wanted more focus on the consequences of the cleansing.

I love the theory that resentful energy can’t heal but can hold things in stasis, and thus WWX is literally being held together with resentful energy. Because otherwise how did he survive getting stabbed and dropped at great height and starving all without a golden core.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I do! I absolutely don’t judge authors who don’t, but for me it’s a way of staying present with my readers. It also gives me chances to tease, to hint at things, to reassure or answer the occasional question etc.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Considering some of the grimmer prompt fics I’ve put up, that’s hard to say - maybe one of the Xue Yang ones, Play or Haunt perhaps? I prefer nice endings most of the time but the short fics have been a fun opportunity to let things get a little nasty.

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Nope - I don’t personally see the appeal.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I was at one point harassed by someone delusional enough to think that their “love” of Jiang Cheng was a good reason to go through every single fic I’ve posted and leave nasty comments on them because I mostly write SangCheng. They called Nie Huaisang ugly and also implied a few times that I only wrote him as a self-insert so I could vicariously “be with” Jiang Cheng (weird how people project their own issues onto others, isn’t it?) - and while I won’t deny I’ve given Huaisang a few of my own hobbies and such, if I was going to write self-insert fic it wouldn’t be with Jiang Cheng. No offense to him but he’s not even my type!

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yes, to the point that to look at my ao3 works posted you probably wouldn’t believe me if I said I’d never thought I would! What kind as in involved parties/genders? Mostly M/M (or I guess M/M/M) but M/F at times and one of these days I *will* get around to writing an F/F couple.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

If so, I don’t know about it!

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Somebody did begin translating Not Mad About It into Russian, but I’m not sure if they plan to continue. If podfic counts there’s also one that has been recorded of one of my prompt fics, Stick The Landing.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I’ve collaborated a bit with my friend @megalodont - most notably perhaps with the Jianghulloween Trick or Treat chapters for WBKB, though we have some other stuff we haven’t finished/posted yet. I tend to feel very particular and possessive about what I write, though, so I can’t imagine doing that with a lot of people - we would need to be completely on the same page about what we’re writing, and to have complementary writing style/ability, too.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

How convenient for me that I’ve never really gotten into shipping/fandom stuff for any other property! I guess as I said above I’m a SangCheng main, but QingJue is a strong contender too!

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Well, I’m fiercely determined to finish everything I’ve begun posting, but there are a few oneshot WIPs I have in my files that sink lower and lower in priority every day. Probably the SongXueXiao response to Fighting Mr 2nd including a scene that I felt was extremely, uncomfortably noncon but that didn’t treat it as such (obviously the mature response to that frustration was to write a fic where that happened but it WAS noncon, right? That’s - that’s what you do about that, right?).

What are your writing strengths?

I like to think I can set a scene - describing settings is something I really enjoy doing, and I think I’m pretty alright at it. Judging by my inbox I’m also good at making characters (and readers) cry.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Remembering what the eff I wrote? My memory for sure, though, is a problem - if I didn’t write myself notes, I don’t remember it. Also, brevity. I can’t be succinct to save my life.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think that it has a place, for example if the POV character is being deliberately left out or their lack of understanding what is said is meaningful (though I’d be more likely to just say that people are speaking and the character doesn’t understand, rather than give the reader actual text that they would then just go put through google translate anyway). What wass my point? Right, it probably has a place, but that place isn’t in my fics - especially since I don’t actually speak other languages. (I’m not including occasional non-English words here, since that feels like a different issue especially when writing in a fandom that’s not originally English-language, which gets you into issues of translation and words/terms that don’t HAVE specific equivalents etc etc)

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Lord of the Rings. And hey, SangCheng troll, that one WAS self-insert fic because I had *such* a crush on Eomer, Third Marshal of the Riddermark/King of Rohan.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I always hate this question - how can one choose their favourite?! I think I give a different answer every time. Let’s see, today my favourite is Autonomous because it has such good lighting.
