I decided to take part in the Sandman Inktober event, but I will use the prompts to write a Haiku (mostly in terms of meter) every day. The idea is to add daily so I end up with a 31 (self-)reblog chain for the whole month.
So if this shows up in your feed again, scroll all the way down or check the reblogs 🙂
I would love to draw, but I feel I would put too much pressure on myself because it takes me a lot longer than writing (and I have hang-ups). But I will give you some older art with my first Haiku (two versions existed of this one, but the other was a bit gory/potentially triggering in more than one way, and I mostly painted over it)…

Dream weaves silent tales,
Endless stories, worlds untold,
But at night they speak.

well-slept ignorance, from 4/1/24
i've been reading the sandman comics, so this haiku was inspired by that, and also by a particularly good night of sleep i got.
i used artbreeder for the first time today to make this one. it's interesting playing with some new programs.

Calliope in Sandman is the Muse of Epic Poetry, right? Not the Muse of Haikus. We mostly see her in captivity but the few times we don't even in the comic I think we've got some evidence that this goddess likes to talk.
So now I'm imagining that Dream of the Endless has an even more specific type than we realized: not just gorgeous brunets with dark eyes (Nada, TV version Calliope & Hob, and Comic Alianora)
No, Dream's type is in fact gorgeous brunets with dark eyes who will also talk at him for hours about their special interest so he doesn't have to. All Dream has to do is sit back, relax, and listen to his love tell him stories all day.

So, I was captain for team villain this year, and I'm probably the youngest captain there ever was lmao. I tried my best and I hope I did ok.
But here's basically how my leadership went throughout fest
Tumblr media
Yeah...
Prompt table ramble
I also made a prompt table. The "art challenges" one and surprise surprise, it's difficult. But when I made it, each square had a goal in mind.
Black and White only: the goal was to strengthen your sense for light and shadow.
One continuous line: Strength sense for form, some what like a blind-contour
Draw in a different style: Forcing you to do art studies
Based on a painting: Also forcing you to do art studies
3 colours only: Value studies
10 minutes: speeeeeeeed
Use a different medium: break your habit of using the same thing over and over again
Yeah. I was lowkey worried that no one was gonna do this table.
Art stuff ramble
I have made so much this year. And I have thoroughly enjoyed making people cry with my art. I don't wanna explain anything lmaoooo (I'm so tired).
Closing remarks
As of writing this, I'm recovering from a cold. I'm very tired, constantly sleeping at some ungodly hour.
I feel like I've improved a lot in terms of art. i pushed myself in terms of quality, but I am really tired.
I need sleep. I have a flight to catch tonight.
Thank you to everyone who have participated 007 fest 2023.

I am also very happy for you to keep tagging me in any Sandman art you create regardless of whether it is for Sandtober2023 or not.
It's been wonderful running this challenge and I hope that it has in some way assisted with your creativity and inspiration to continue making art and fanworks for our lovely fandom!
I will continue to reblog any Sandman art I come across, and my askbox is always open for Sandman related questions (and now that Sandtober is over I have quite a few meta asks to get to answering already!)
I hope you have all enjoyed this challenge as much as I have. I do hope I continue to see your work on my dash in the coming months as well! I also hope you all had a very happy halloween :)

You can still have villains with various motives, well it be altruistic or selfish. I mean a good villain doesn’t mean they have to be a mustache twirling asshole who likes watching puppies being run over. But you also don’t have to be sympathetic to that motivation.
Magneto is a perfect example. As a man from Jewish faith, has seen evils that can be implemented just for being different. Because of that we understand where he’s coming from, but we also understand that he is also committing atrocities against humanity that can be argued, similar to what he has experienced.
Sandman’s motivation to save his daughter is still valid. We understand where he’s coming from, but he’s still somebody who’s willing to murder and steal in order to save his daughter. That’s what makes him a villain. His motivation but his reaction.
A villain is mainly a character whose opposition is different from the main character. Motivation can be different or same. It’s how they react to a situation.
I’m going to go off topic. The main thing I was trying to say is not that the MCU has bad villains. It’s the fact that in the scope of a shared universe and a continuous storyline for The heroes. The villains had become a plot point in which they only do their job in one movie and that’s it. And for the villains who haven’t died, once they return their evil villain obsession story has already been told. So the next step is to soften them into whatever character. Like seriously, in the last movie these characters try to rip the head off the Hero, now they’re writing haiku.
Here’s example from me, Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu what is a interesting villain. I would’ve liked to see him in future installments challenging Shang Chi into becoming a better hero. But he did his job in one movie. We’re never gonna get an amazing actor like Tony Leung back again in the MCU.
That’s the problem that they have. The MCU doesn’t have Bad villains. It’s that if you’re going to advertise a shared universe then I want to see more of those good villains be villains.

Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
(I've got a few~! Aside from polishing up some old Khadgar drabbles, I've got a novel I've written, a webcomic in the works, and working on a couple of different table top rpgs. The novel is fantasy/sci-fi. And I'm bad at summarizing things but nutshelled it's about a pantheon of dieties trying very hard to make a new universe and it's not going well. There's a healthy amount of meta humor. Currently I'm in the beta reader stage; but I've been sturggling to find beta readers so I may just jump right into getting an editor and going from there. (Editors are important! Don't let anyone convince you you can skip this step!) And then I'll work on getting it published. One of my favorite things, aside from the meta humor chaos, is that no one in the main cast is straight, and everyone in the main cast and a large swatch of the background characters are gender fluid, trans, non-binary or some flavor of such. Because honestly, if books can be 100% filled with cis gendered characters and be considered "normal" then my book that takes place in a completely different Universe can have 100% non-cisgendered characters in it. I'm sure this will piss off a particular group of people and I will bask in their anger. *CACKLES* If you've ever caught my art of Haiku, a blue fishy boi, he's the MC of that book, woot! Currently it's titled "Infinity's Ruin" but I'm not entirely sold on that name, but "End of Infinity" was already taken. BOO. The webcomic is a bit harder to describbeee.....but it's called "Boxes don't eat pomegranates". It deals with dream shenannigans because I'm a sucker for that stuff (And yet I still haven't read Sandman I'M A FRAUD) and it's tied into another story of mine called "I'm Dating the Grim Reaper" which is in a bit of a limbo because I can't decide what format to put THAT story in. The webcomic was just recently restarted after a long hiatus so it's a bit awkward at the moment, but the characters are going to be really fun and I like the overall meta story. Been in the works for a few years now so it's a labor of love! The TTRPG's are a bit more secret though; I've posted art for one of them already but due to the nature of things, I don't want to post too much about them just yet because there's a high risk of them being stolen as people have already commented on sniping the art I've done already for their own campaigns. arf.)

Sigil—Haiku by @writing-for-life for Sandtober 2023. Art by Felipe Echevarria
Another resurrection for Death Appreciation Week:
Three of the 31 Haikus I wrote were devoted to Death, namely Sigil, Wings and Comfort.
“Sigil” would somehow make a good inspiration for “Death Tarot” I guess?

Stairway to Heaven
About an illegal hike in Hawaii that the kids do anyway
--
A relentlessly unhappy baby bemoans the pain of a red-eye from Honolulu to Atlanta. Despite my best efforts (three jack and cokes, three Tylenol PMs), the baby’s wails trump Mr. Sandman. My body is jelly, and I would do well to be spread on toast, I think, as I feel the hydrogen ions in my blood render my body to wet cement with every movement. I should be sleeping!
Last night, my teenage cousin guided me to a summit whose leading journey was so continuously upward and life-threatening that it masked the spookiness of us going in the witching hour. Adrenaline and coffee filled, possessed by the want for Mother Earth (or Papa and Honua, the Hawaiian earth gods), to enliven my spirit with her humbling and majestic ways. I paid little attention to the maximized effort my body was making. I felt like jelly.
In 1942, a wooden ladder was spiked to a cliff on the island of O’ahu to enable the installation of antenna cables, which were later used by the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1950s. Upgraded from ladder to stairway, the trail hosted open traffic by many until the state deemed it too treacherous and shut closed it off in 1987. Sixteen years later, the state of Hawaii paid $875,000 to have them repaired and yet they remain restricted. The hike is officially named the Haiku Stairs, or the Stairway to Heaven. It is off-limits to the public and therefore desirable for its forbidden views as well as the unique challenge of climbing 3,922 steps.
Reckless but sober, we ambitiously started the journey around two in the morning. Perhaps a little too early, but rumor had it that the guard stationed himself around three. Cloaked by the dark, I followed my deer-like cousin through a bamboo forest and under a fence, sneaking like hungry raccoons but clumsily cracking nests of broken bamboo. Approaching the entrance to the path, we were startled by a sweaty, curious man meandering by the mouth, so we rather quickly grappled around the final obstructing fence and landed on the first stair.
Moonlight illuminated the ascending path and framing foliage in milky streaks, casting an ominous glow on the looming trail. The stairs crawled at a steady incline like an endless chrome centipede, flanked by a rail on either side and studded with grips. While the slopes were lush with bedded foliage, there was no branch or boulder to break a fall should either of us do so. As I hauled upward through the mist, thoughts of life’s impermanence and constant unpredictability swam along my brain. I was a recent college graduate living in New York, supporting myself with earnings from an industry I have little interest and continuously sideswiped by those I assume are more ambitious, lucky or talented than I.
Silently climbing the stairs, I pondered the concept of “making it” in the big apple, and the significance of it all fell off my shoulders like the sweat off my neck. Perhaps the Hawaiian gods were near, or maybe I was merely experiencing firsthand man versus nature philosophy. Either way, the physical effort combined with the quiet thrill of a prohibited nocturnal hike successfully revived my existential engine. Catching our breath on the second platform, my stoic and positive little cousin weighed the consequences of this exercise on her upcoming track meet. As casual as one choosing a good pineapple or better pineapple, she shrugged off notions of fatigue and glanced upward. We were making good time–it was just shy of 4–and judging the stunted forthcoming stairs, I thought we might have time for a nap at the top before dawn. Nodding to the above incline, I asked “Is that where it ends? Just up there?”
“No, laughed Christine. We have to go through the clouds!”
The force of roaring wind and the splattering rain held my breath outside of my body. We looked like struggling wet butterflies, our bright ponchos clinging to and blowing away from us like dampened and damaged wings.
As night remained ever present, cloaking the surroundings with her inky shroud, our arrival to the top was not rewarded with a panoramic view of southern O’ahu. Rather than linger and take photos, we cautiously peered inside the concrete hut that marked the peak. Layers of graffiti and grime covered the walls, but the musty air was ours alone. A plank of creaky plywood served as our sanctuary where we began the wait for sunrise.
Twenty minutes into the mini-vigil, the first to mark a steady stream of young adventurers stepped into the quarters. One toted a plastic bag filled with wrinkled, blackened hot dogs, and her companion, a bearded fellow, had a pack full of the necessary accoutrements for a sunrise stake-out: a lantern, some blankets, and potato chips. Following them was an exhilarated and garrulous group in complimentary University of Hawaii sweatshirts and on their tail, vagabonderie in the teenage male form. Shaggy-haired and shoeless, the wiry young men bring up the rear, sauntered around like one might in their kitchen before stepping out to surreptitiously smoke a bowl of marijuana. Inside, snacks were timidly passed around, and my cousin’s iPhone soon met a friendly UH student’s portable speakers to serenade all with reggae and island tunes.
On a time-limit (school started in two hours), we waved our newly formed and never-to-be-seen-again comrades goodbye and prematurely began our descent just at the cusp of dawn. When the sun finally raised its glowing head, the shroud of settled mist rose to the heavens and the bushy green life beneath stirred with the dawn. Sweet and pungent odors wafted through the morning breeze, as I discovered God’s cuckoo clock in the chorus of tropical birds.
There was no time to meander around or pause for the view.
Getting down was less like walking down a long flight of stairs and more like controlled falling: lifting, sliding, planting. I tested exactly how durable my gloves were as my arms stepped up to be the one barrier between my body and the slippery steep ground. As the bottom rose to focus, so did the guard. Avoiding a citation was the final worry, but as his blue hair came into focus, my anxiety disappeared. Any guard with a blue Mohawk had to have the Aloha spirit, right? Toddling on wobbly limbs, we awkwardly passed him with a guilty greeting. “Now you,” he alleged, looking at my red face, sweaty head, and mud-splattered body, “you look like you just went to Heaven.”

INTERVIEW/EXCERPT TAKEN FROM ONE PIECE MAGAZINE VOL. 2
Sandman has translated magazine vol.2 interview: Here is my summary for ONE PIECE Magazine volume 2 except for Ace novel and editors' short interview. - After becoming a mangaka, Oda noticed that his imagination ability of creating various stories is based on Rakugo, Japanese verbal entertainment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugo https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=落語 - Oda has been enjoying Rakugo ever since he was in elementary school. When Oda's friends in junior high school came to his house, he played a cassette tape of Rakugo to entertain them, but all of them got bored in 5 minutes. - Oda started listening to Rakugo since his parents enjoyed Rakugo via cassette tapes. On the other hand, his elder sister didn't get attracted to it. He even listened to Rakugo right before sleeping. Oda remembers he was an elementary school kid who fell into asleep thanks to middle-aged man's voice.lol - When Oda was around 12/13 years old, he was very glad that his parents kindly bought a ticket for Rakugo show in Kumamoto for his birthday present. - Oda meets Kosanji Yanagiya, one of the best Rakugo performer, once a year in Studio Ghibli. Toshio Suzuki, producer of Ghibli, invites Oda to his Rakugo event every year. - Oda believes he has never run out of ideas about ONE PIECE story because he knows a lot about classic Rakugo/film/Jidaigeki which survived the test of time. - Oda devoted himself to watching films in high school/college days. He watched 3 films per day. He got bored with current films soon and started focusing on classics. - Oda thinks perhaps the sound effect "Don!!" (ドン!!) in ONE PIECE is based on actors' overacting in classic Jidaigeki. Oda says he wants his audience to pay attention to the "Don!!" panel. - Oda considers a good sense of rhythm about words is important when creating sentences in ONE PIECE although he doesn't read many books. Oda sometimes keeps in mind that he should write sentences in 5-7-5 Japanese traditional poetic Haiku form. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku - The person Oda wants to meet most now is Quentin Tarantino. Oda also says that he has already met most of the people whom he wants to. - Oda at the age of 3-6 resolved to become a mangaka since he can make a living via drawing manga every day. - Oda thought he would easily become the best mangaka since he had been confident of his drawing technique, but he noticed that he needed to learn creating an interesting story when he was around 17 years old. - Oda was not convinced when his art teacher in junior high school didn't give the best grade to his good Toriyama-ish dragon drawing. Oda says he thought there was no difference between manga and art. - Before Oda became a professional mangaka, his editor often advised him to create well-defined manga characters. Some people even criticized that Luffy in "Romance Dawn" (prototype for ONE PIECE) didn't seem to move on its own. Oda says that himself didn't fully grasp the personality of Luffy at that time. - Oda remembers he was a rude person without knowing it before his debut as a professional mangaka. He talked to a legendary mkangaka (HIroshi Motomiya) too casually in a party, which made staffs upset. - Oda keeps in mind that he should make funny and casual comments in SBS. Oda in childhood had read mangaka talking about their hardships in creating manga in author's comments. He made up his mind that he wouldn't write such a comment since [he considers audience wouldn't understand it no matter how mangaka talks about their hardships in detail. - Bandai company plans to sell OP goods based on SBS drawings of gender-bent/childhood characters although Oda just wants to draw them just for fun. - Oda says he'd like to keep being "a friendly funny guy in neighborhood" for kids who feels free to answer their requests to make drawings in SBS. Oda also says his drawings are not something very valuable. He says he is not a kind of mangaka who considers himself, "Even one line drawn by me can make much money!" *************************** - Oda "Be sure to look forward to Wano country. I refrain from revealing when I draw it, though." - Oda "There are tons of new characters I want to draw in Wano arc. Characters in ONE PIECE fight mostly on land despite them being pirates. I'd like to draw some event scenes on the sea which reminds us that they are pirates. Maybe I'll change my mind, though (laugh)" - When Kuma was introduced for the first time in 2002, Oda told one of his assistants that Kuma would cause the separation of Straw Hats in the future. It came true in 2008. - The drawings of Amaru Enel are based on a elephant. - There are some supplements (vitamin, turmeric, ornithine and forskohlii) and Red Bull on Oda's desk... - Oda is getting excited and doesn't eat food near the deadline for submitting manuscripts. Oda says food would make him sleepy. On the other hand, his assistants are getting exhausted near the deadline. - 3 assistants have been working under Oda for more than 15 years. - Oda had nearly 30 options for Rebecca's name. (Shalom, Violet, Russian, Akiria, Girasole, Laura, Helianthus, Seneca, Juvenalis, Noir, Vineyard, Iris, Amazonia, Lambda, Isbell and Fabula etc..) The text says Shalom means peace in Hebrew and some other options mean sunflower in different languages. - There is an impressive line Oda didn't use in Enies Lobby arc. Luffy "Robin! Keep laughing! There's nothing to be afraid of! I'm with you!!" Robin sheds tears remembering Saul's words "Laugh when you are in hardships!! Dereshishishi"
And lastly, these two pieces of colorspreads are well fridgin done! Nami ngggrrhhhhh!!! Asdghjkh fk u Oda!!!! But it’s not like I won’t keep the pic tho, for academic purpose ofc ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

On the side note, the last piece should have Zoro and Robin in there #casuallywinkingtotheirshippers
