I think what appeals to me most about MLS as opposed to European leagues has everything to do with the presence of the salary cap. Like other pro sports in North America, every team in the competition has the same upper limit on how much money they can spend on player salaries. This prevents teams from large markets like NY and LA from running away with things by getting all the big signings, leaving smaller market teams behind. If the salary cap weren’t present, then things would end up like they are in the EPL, with the same six-or-so clubs always around the top year after year after year (tbh if the MLS didn’t have a salary cap it probably would have dissolved by now, because salary caps also promote responsible spending and sustainability). If you’re a supporter of idk, Reading, you’re not expecting to contend for the EPL title in five years because that club doesn’t have the money. But if you’re a fan of Vancouver Whitecaps, sure your team isn’t doing great right now, but since every team in the league is on a level playing field when it comes to player wages, a few roster moves and smart contracts can make that club a contender in a few years.
In North America, leagues are created with the whole league’s success in mind, as opposed to the successes of individual clubs. It’s how clubs like Austin FC or LAFC, clubs that didn’t exist five years ago, can be contenders now.
Almost fought someone at the super market because they said Jason Zucker was a waste of cap space. Like sure he is injured but have you ever thought that maybe he’s iMPORTANT TO ME!??
The main sources of revenue for a professional sports team are broadcasting rights for television and ticket sales. The NHL gets a much smaller amount of revenue from its TV deal than the NFL, MLB or NBA and, therefore, has less money to pay its players.
The top-three revenue-generating teams in the NHL — the Leafs, Canadiens, and Rangers — brought in $922 million in 2022-23. Meanwhile, the bottom-three squads — the Coyotes, Senators, and Blue Jackets— raked in $396 million. For reference, the NBA’s top revenue generating franchise, the Golden State Warriors generated 765 million dollars last year. The Memphis Grizzlies, the NBA’s lowest revenue generating franchise, still brought in 258 million dollars.
The NBA and NHL maintained the same average team values from 2000-2002, As of 2020, average team values per NBA team are: $2.123 billion. As of 2019, $660 million per NHL team. Since 2005 via statista.com, the NBA has been ahead of the NHL in generating revenue.
Why?
According to businessinsider.com, the biggest factor driving the value of franchises in the NBA is that unlike the NHL, NBA franchises sell their own local television rights. the NBA receives $2.7 billion a year from ESPN and Turner. The NHL receives $625 million a year from ESPN and Turner and, $433m-ish per year from Rogers, but that's still less than half of what the NBA rakes in.
Can the NHL reach the growth of the other Major North American sports leagues?
Puckbunnies and trolls are ready so increase a salary cap then. Still not in time with mega cheques of basketball stars or American football because lack of bigger audience.
For as a lot of worship as billionaires appear to get around right here, and the runway they obtain to form our society to profit them an increasing number of, they’re a cranky bunch. There’s all the time more cash to be made, cash they’ll by no means know what to do with, there’s all the time another person to fuck over, and because it appears there’s all the time one other billionaire to…
three minutes of my fave parts from nico's latest podcast appearance. highlights include:
- 'were you more jealous of your wife looking at another man or lewis hamilton winning a race?'
- editors giving nico a pink wheel when he asks to edit in an f1 wheel. can never escape britneyfication 🥹
- nico finding out the host can't drive and immediately betting him to go karting where nico drives in reverse and he drives forwards to see whose faster
- 'believe in yourself' 🙄 I tried for 10 years and even then in the last race I didn't really believe. But the reassuring thing you can have great success even if you don't believe in yourself 😃 as long as you are so damn committed."

Cowboys Have Over $20M in Cap Space, Why Aren't They Spending It?
Cowboys Have Over $20M in Cap Space, Why Aren’t They Spending It?
A week ago the Cowboys received an additional $10 million to their salary cap space. Now with at least $20 million to spend, why is Dallas seemingly hoarding this money instead of improving the roster for 2022?
The Cowboys’ lack of aggression in free agency has been a frustration offseason storyline. It’s compounded by the fact that Dallas discarded useful veterans like WR Amari Cooper and OT…
