Stars Burnout, Leafs Win 5-4
The Toronto Maple Leafs showcased their star power in a thrilling matchup against the Dallas Stars, securing a 4-3 victory Wednesday evening. Leafs scorers Nylander (x2), Tavares, Matthews, and Marner lit up the scoreboard.
Dallas struggled on the second half of a back-to-back. They came out strong and were in a tie game halfway through the third but ultimately ran out of gas allowing the Leafs to seize control and score 2 goals in mere moments to take a 5-3 lead. Despite a momentary worry during the 3-3 tie, the Leafs proved their resilience and dominance.
However, the game was not without controversy. Pontus Holmberg's soft penalty call sparked debate, compounded by former Leaf Mason Marchment's high and late hit on McCabe, leaving the latter bleeding and infuriated. McCabe's frustration was apparent for the remainder of the contest as he tried to engage with Marchment several times to no avail.
Despite challenges, the strong forechecking from Tavares compounded with extending his goal-scoring streak to three games led to a 49 xGF%. The second best on the team behind... wait THE FOURTH LINE?!? The breakdown of the Leafs' PK on Benn's goal was cringeworthy, but then we saw the Leafs absolutely own the stars PP later in the game, producing 4 high danger chances.
What a confusing team. One gimme bet anymore though, is that if the Leafs stars aren't going, it's going to be a tough night. Off to The CTC for the battle of Ontario

Team Matthews Takes All Star Tournament
NHL All-Star Weekend in Toronto was truly a success, showcasing the best talent in hockey, and bringing back the excitement to the events. The festivities kicked off Friday with the Skills Competition, where Connor McDavid displayed his lightning-fast skills to claim victory and pocket a cool $1 million. No surprise there, as McDavid's prowess on the ice continues to astound, although Nylander and Matthews had their names in the hat until the end of competition.
In Saturday’s thrilling 3-on-3 tournament, Team Matthews emerged triumphant winning in the finals 7-4 against team Mcdavid. Led by the dynamic play of both Alex DeBrincat, and Matthew Barzal the pair ran away with the show, each recording 6 points in 2 contests. In game one we saw McDavid's squad mount a stunning comeback from three goals down against team MacKinnon at 4v3 to even make it to the finals. The goalies were great, giving close to full effort, the score reflects more defensive play. Massive surprise to Matthews was hearing Nylander talk about back checking. You must know in that moment your odds ae good if willy is willing to play defense.
Hey, speaking of surprises, the Leafs won something. Meaningless, but they won. Not actually THE Leafs, but SOME Leafs. I'll take the wins where I can with this group. Overall, NHL All-Star Weekend displayed the incredible skill and excitement that hockey brings to fans worldwide. From McDavid's magic to Matthews' triumph, it was a weekend to remember in the world of hockey.

The Flood Gates Are Officially Open for NHL Trade Season
In the last 72 hours, we've seen two major deadline pieces moved, suggesting the action around the league is set to pick up. The first domino to fall was Elias Lindholm. Lindholm was shipped from Calgary off to Vancouver for a hefty return, that included 27-year-old scoring winger Andre Kuzmenko.
Now reports indicate 11-year NHL veteran Sean Monahan headed west once again landing in Winnipeg with the Jets. Monahan has recorded 13G, 22A, with 104 SOG this season while playing 2C for the Montreal Canadiens, who received a 1st round selection, and a conditional pick as compensation from the Jets.
Thats now 3 of the top 10 players from TSN’s Trade Bait board that have been moved, a full month before the NHL trade deadline.
It was just one year ago the Vancouver Canucks were involved in cracking open the egg that is trade season as well. They traded Bo Horvat to the New York islanders on Jan 30, 2023. That started what was a flurry of a trade deadline last year, that was rambunctiously active, and caused the actual deadline day to be a snooze. It was only 9 days after the Canucks completed their initial trade with the Islanders that Vladimir Tarasenko was traded from St. Louis to The Rangers, and within two weeks Toronto was involved in the action as well, acquiring Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari from St louis. I expect something similar from this year's trade season.
It's time to get excited, silly season has begun.

Big Hype For NHL All Star Game In Toronto
For the first time in a long time, I cannot stop thinking about the NHL all-star skills competition. For once, the NHL seems to have taken a second to touch grass. With the help of Connor Mcdavid, they've created what has become the most hyped skills comp, maybe, ever. Its possibly my depravation of best on best hockey, with no international play since 2016, which even then was kind of a joke of best on best. WE WANT OLYMPICS... But I digress. The best players in the NHL, no, ACTUALLY the best players in the NHL are going to be there. A Mind Blowing list. Matthews? Yep. Mcdavid? Obviously. MacKinnon? Duh. Kuch- I said what I said. Even Nylander finally earned his spotlight.
Only major name missing is Quinn Hughes. Of the 10 names already released I can't think of a more deserving group, though. There are also 3 more players to be added. 2 as a part of the NHL’s shtick and a replacement for an injured Jack Hughes. I do believe Mcdavid played a big hand in this group coming together, and with NHL CCO Steve Mayer saying “We want to find 12 guys who are going to be engaged, who are the most skilled players in our league, who are big personalities, who are going to go really hard to win the title,” looks to me like they hit the nail on the head. I anticipate a few more eyes on the show this year.

Why don't NHL teams spend more on their players?
The main sources of revenue for a professional sports team are broadcasting rights for television and ticket sales. The NHL gets a much smaller amount of revenue from its TV deal than the NFL, MLB or NBA and, therefore, has less money to pay its players.
The top-three revenue-generating teams in the NHL — the Leafs, Canadiens, and Rangers — brought in $922 million in 2022-23. Meanwhile, the bottom-three squads — the Coyotes, Senators, and Blue Jackets— raked in $396 million. For reference, the NBA’s top revenue generating franchise, the Golden State Warriors generated 765 million dollars last year. The Memphis Grizzlies, the NBA’s lowest revenue generating franchise, still brought in 258 million dollars.
The NBA and NHL maintained the same average team values from 2000-2002, As of 2020, average team values per NBA team are: $2.123 billion. As of 2019, $660 million per NHL team. Since 2005 via statista.com, the NBA has been ahead of the NHL in generating revenue.
Why?
According to businessinsider.com, the biggest factor driving the value of franchises in the NBA is that unlike the NHL, NBA franchises sell their own local television rights. the NBA receives $2.7 billion a year from ESPN and Turner. The NHL receives $625 million a year from ESPN and Turner and, $433m-ish per year from Rogers, but that's still less than half of what the NBA rakes in.
Can the NHL reach the growth of the other Major North American sports leagues?

Leafs Sweep the Jets in Home and Home Series
Two games in four nights and four points later, the Leafs arrive at the all-star break in good form. That’s eight days off for those not participating in the festivities this upcoming weekend in Toronto. The Leafs tend to do this; win games before stretches off – i.e., Sweden. They urge us to forget about recent struggles and questions surrounding the team's cohesion and even will. After this weekend, against one of the league's top teams, some of those questions should be put to rest.
Since December 1st, Connor Hellebuyck has led the NHL in save percentage (.941), and goals against average (1.74). Just last week, it took the mighty Bruins to break Winnipeg’s near record breaking streak of allowing 3 goals or less for 35 straight games. The Jets have been tops in the central during that time and are now only two points back of the Avalanche for first place, thanks to the Leafs.
It was a spectacular pair of games from Samsonov posting a .961 SV% , 1 GAA and a shutout over the two game series. Ryan Reaves scored an unlikely, but beautiful goal and Auston Matthews continued in his MVP form, scoring in both games, as Toronto soared past the Jets.  Some thought the Leafs couldn't win either one of these games, let alone both. Now, it's hard to argue the Toronto Maple Leafs can't bring it, when asked. They showed up. Whether they can consistently do this remains to be seen.

Should The Leafs Buyout Ryan Reaves?
Brad Treliving has made his mark on the Leafs since taking over as GM at the end of May 2023. He made a splash on free agency day, signing Reaves, Bertuzzi, Klingberg and Domi. Love or hate Dubas, you must admit he wouldn't have signed one of these guys, let alone all of them. Treliving has also brought in a lower tier of names who have undoubtedly made positive contributions to Leafs defense, bottom 6, and goaltending positions with names like Noah Gregor, Simon Benoit, William Lagesson and Martin Jones.
Reaves has played in just 21 contests for the buds and has 1 goal, while being a – 11. Reaves contract has the highest value (1.3m) and longest term (3 yrs) of the three that haven't been regulars. Add in that we learned about his “loose Knees” last week, to the fact that he can't be sent to the minors for cap relief, he’s easily the number one candidate for the worst-off season signing in Toronto.
If Toronto were to consider buying out reaves contract, they would save 900k in the next 2 seasons, the seasons Reaves is contracted for. The following 2 seasons there would be a 450k penalty to the Leafs for the buyout. By then, the salary cap will have gone up significantly and it may be the most obvious choice for fans, but in recently we have learned ownership is tightening up about unnecessary spending. I.E. Mike Babcock
What should the Leafs do?

Leafs In For A Bigger Test In Winnipeg
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets are completing their home and home series, this Saturday in Winnipeg. This series is the only time this season these two teams will meet, and the Jets will be hungry for the win, after an overtime loss in Toronto on Wednesday. Winnipeg dominated including out shooting Toronto 21-6 in the first half of Wednesdays tilt; although Toronto was able to even out the shot count after 5 consecutive powerplays.
Only the lines of Robertson, Tavares, Nylander (51.54 xGF%) and Robertson, Domi, Jarnkrok (61.34 xGF%) won their minutes on Wednesday wihile Toronto's top line of Matthews, Marner, and Knies had a dismal (42.98 xGF%) Winnipeg was without Mark Scheifele (still out) , Gabe Vilardi, back-up Laurent Brossoit in net and playing with 5 defenders after Morrisey went down in the first period.
Now, Toronto heads to Winnipeg for Hockey night in Canada, Winnipeg now with a healthier roster and their number one goaltender between the pipes. Toronto lacked possession stats against a depleted Jets squad in their previous match-up. Albeit coming away with an overtime win; the Leafs are going to have to find another gear to hang with the home team on Saturday.
Toronto has struggled of late going 5-4-1 in their last 10 games while allowing 29 GA
Winnipeg have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 allowing only 15 GA
Toronto is going to need to fire on all cylinders for any chance at a win.
