Can we live happily even when we know we will die soon? Do we lose our humanity when we struggle with illness on a daily basis? How can we live with someone whose days are numbered? These are probably questions that many of you have already asked yourselves, and which I Want to Eat Your Pancreas answers. When the death knell hangs over the life of a loved one, our whole life is turned upside down and the smallest detail has its importance, and its consequences. And yet, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas shows us how the imminence of death is not synonymous with the end of life, quite the contrary. It can be a new beginning for some, a renewal that transforms and makes life worth living. This is what Haruki will experience with Sakura, who has a fatal disease that is gradually destroying her pancreas.

The introverted young boy, naturally distrustful of others, meets his classmate by chance at the hospital. He discovers her terrible secret and learns that she has less than a year to live. Following his reserved and distant nature, he tries to scare her away by behaving coldly, but the lively and good-humoured girl refuses to give up. After all, Haruki is now the only one, apart from his family, who knows her secret! From there, they develop a beautiful friendship as they go on many excursions to help Sakura achieve the things she wants to do in life before she dies. Haruki finds himself drawn in by the dynamism of the young girl who doesn't let him rest for a moment and forces him to enjoy life as much as possible.

A joy of living that deeply touches the boy who is always aware of his friend's state of health, but whose delicacy allows him not to burden his friend with the fatality of his fate. Discovering each other with gentle affection, the two friends form a very strong friendship whose limits they will constantly question without ever running away from the subject. In this situation that threatens to collapse at any moment, they quickly realize how much they bring to each other, and will evolve, one to blossom and learn happiness alongside others, the other to fight against the disease until the last moment while remaining herself, a young girl full of life and who loves spending time with her friends.

A beautiful story of youth and friendship, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is actually more about life than about death. Discovering the joy of life and learning to live it to the fullest, tasting the pleasures it offers, and learning to overcome the death of a loved one while keeping only the positive, is the real message of this anime. A very touching story of a dying woman who teaches a lonely high school student to live, despite the pain and the illness, to keep only the good side of things while constantly experimenting with new ones, which will do you a world of good! Sometimes the beauty of life can only be discovered when we cross the most difficult paths it imposes on us.

Don't let the subject of the anime hold you back, because its beauty will move you. If the question of mourning is obviously addressed, at no time is the message carried by this anime heavy or burdensome, and it is with a light heart that you will leave after having watched this superb anime!

i put off reading i want to eat your pancreas just for the second volume to be one of the handful of books to make me cry. was when Haruki goes to Sakura's house after missing the funeral. and her mom's like 'you're him.' and she hands him Sakura's journal. and the fact that it wasn't even the cancer that killed her, and him having a gut feeling something was wrong. like bruh, how dare you pull a twist like that.

and granted i should've garnered from the cover art that it wasn't gonna be the body horror i was expecting it to be but still.

DISCLAIMER: I just deepl and google translated my way through this because I wanted to know what’s going on, so there are definitely mistakes but I believe I managed the general gist of the story. Quiero comerme tu páncreas

Cuando escuchas que vas a ver una película que se llama ‘Quiero comerme tu páncreas’ uno de inmediato podría pensar que se trata de un título algo extraño, pero créanme que es solo en apariencia, y si algo sabemos es que no se debe juzgar a un libro por su portada.

En este caso, el libro es la historia de Sakura Yamauchi, una joven que sabe que, a causa de una enfermedad, cuenta con muy poco tiempo de vida. Pero ella decide vivir feliz, vivir al máximo lo poco que le queda con la gente que ella ha escogido para hacerlo, en este caso, el muchacho protagonista que recuerda como conoció a esta joven y que es el único que sabe de la situación real de ella. La película es un viaje sumamente emocional, pero, también tiene sus respiros cómicos, y hace que te intereses en los personajes que están intentando lidiar (cada uno a su manera) con algo que saben que va a terminar. Sakura y el otro protagonista (no diré el nombre porque no se dice por una razón en específico, son prácticamente polos opuestos, ella es apasionada, dulce, intensa, creativa y habla con todos, mientras que él es callado, a tal punto que no se esfuerza por hablar con nadie y solo lee libros, porque dice que son más apasionantes que las personas. Uno podría pensar en un estereotipo, pero de hecho, explican de manera muy interesante el porqué él es así, porque en muchos momentos me sentía identificada con él en su experiencia en el colegio. La película visualmente es hermosa, acompañado con una música que crea una atmósfera muy hermosa e íntima, y unos escenarios maravillosos, como imágenes de los típicos arboles de cerezo que aparecen tanto en series y películas de anime.

Volviendo a lo que es la idea principal de la película, esta es una hermosa historia de un paso más en la vida, la amistad, el primer amor, la decisión de vivir la vida intensamente aún sabiendo que tienes el tiempo en contra, las enseñanzas que obtenemos de otras personas que forman parte de nuestras vidas y que, de alguna manera, y que, a causa de esas personas somos lo que somos ahora.

Eso es una verdad que sabemos, pero, cuando lo ves en pantalla relatado de una manera tan delicada, dulce, no puedes más que emocionarte hasta las lagrimas, porque, a veces podemos olvidarlo, pero, hace bien recordarlo, hace bien saberlo.

Tú, quien lees esto, yo, todos somos quienes somos gracias a las personas que forman parte de nuestro pequeño universo, todos ellos, los conocimos más que por la vida, fueron nuestras propias opciones, y, ¿acaso nuestro mundo no es mucho mejor por eso?

Review: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

I remember how the "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" anime and manga were trending when I was in high school because the movie just came out (2018.). There were so many positive reviews, but the most memorable comments were about how sad the story was. So much so that a lot of people cried their eyes out during the film. Still, I never got a chance to read it or watch it until a few weeks ago, when my boyfriend bought the manga.

First and foremost, "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" is about a teenage girl, Sakura Yamauchi, who is suffering from a severe pancreatic disease. One day, a highly introverted boy from her class accidentally finds out about her illness, so she takes her chance and decides to befriend him. Since he is the only other person besides her family who knows she's sick, she finds his company comforting. While they are seemingly polar opposites - she is a bubbly extrovert and he is a reserved loner, their relationship still manages to slowly develop over time.

Sakura is a very bright and energetic girl who doesn't stray away from social situations. Her personality might be a little bothersome and unrealistic at first, but her radiant attitude quickly becomes charming and lovable. Because she is so cheerful, she makes the reader forget how sick she really is. Her happiness sometimes gets cut off with a gut-wrenching panel which draws light to her poor health and unavoidable death, reminding the reader that she is just a scared little girl.

The author plays a lot with concealing the main character's name, making the other characters call him by the title of how they view him. For an example, depressing-kun. Depending on which character addresses him, the titles can get rude, mean or insulting. Even Sakura doesn't call him by his real name, even though he tells it to her at the beginning of the story. This play with names and titles is truly an ingenious tool which the author uses to set up the main character's development and personality, as well as the change he goes through as the story progresses.

While the story is often described as a bittersweet romance (even on the back of the book), I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as such. The relationship between Sakura and the boy often drifts between platonic and romantic feelings because of the intense, sincere love they experience for one another. Neither one of them knows how to process such strong emotions, but they know their bond is anything but ordinary. Even their classmates become convinced they have started dating and only refuse to admit it.

But as the story progresses, both of them realize they don't have to appease to the societal pressure to be together. Their closeness originated because they needed a friend, not because they were romantically interested in one another. And while Sakura does sometimes tease the boy and seems to be truly attracted to him, her actions are often guided by the fear she might miss out on the joys of a normal teenage life, not because she truly wants to be with him.

Moreover, the author often points out that life is about experiencing it with other people and finding your place in the community. A person cannot survive on their own, but they also do not have to appease to every single need from society. Romantic love is only secondary to the primal human need of just being seen, held and heard. This is what Sakura and the boy both learn from each other and why their relationship works.

Therefore, I consider "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" as an ode to friendship, one which sprouted between two completely different people and which developed because they both needed each other.

The storytelling is incredible and perfectly rounded. The ending is foreshadowed, so it is not entirely unpredictable, but still shocking because of the plot-twist. The feeling of emptiness when Sakura dies is portrayed so well. Her personality had always been so loud and suddenly the panels seem so quiet after she's gone. The last few chapters are extremely emotional, to say the least. Both the author and the illustrator perfectly conveyed the feelings of all the characters, so it is not difficult to get entirely engulfed in them.

"I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" could definitely be considered a classic according to its popularity, influence and overall delivery. It offers stunning visuals, beautiful storytelling, cute characters and a satisfying, but somber ending. I absolutely recommend it, even to people who might usually not be into manga or anime.
