28 September is the annual day of action in support of the right to safe abortion. It has been celebrated since 1990 in Latin America, and since 2011 around the world.
Why does International Safe Abortion Day matter?
Because unsafe abortion is the 3rd leading cause of maternal deaths, deaths that are entirely preventable.
In reaction to the United States Supreme Court's ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Mathilde Panot, French MP and President of the La France insoumise parliamentary group submitted a bill to the French National Assembly.
It aimed to codify the right to a safe abortion for women in the French Constitution. It passed on a 337–32 vote on 24 November 2023, starting the process of enshrining the right to abortion in the French Constitution.
In January 2024, the National Assembly voted in favor of the constitutional amendment 433-30. For the amendment to be officially added to the constitution, it then passed through the Senate in February 267-50.
On 4 March 2024, Parliament amended Article 34 in a 780 to 72 vote. This amendment made France, as of passage, the only nation to guarantee the right to an abortion.
The amendment describes abortion as a "guaranteed freedom".

A project I’m working on (between tiny amounts of sleep and my day and weekend jobs). please share.
Hi all. No clownery in this post. I’m trying to archive and host on a private domain as much safe-abortion-and-sexual-health information for as many people as possible. As https://twitter.com/mskellymhayes pointed out, information is the next thing to be banned in making family planning as inaccessible (and life-threatening) as possible.
I know books like The New Handbook https://www.amazon.com/New-Handbook-Post-Roe-America-Practical/dp/1644210584 are resources that can be out of people’s reach in terms of how much the fascists love book banning/destroying, so I am planning to PDF and host it ASAP so everyone can access it (it’s a bestseller atm I don’t think I’m harming the author in the same way Why Does He Do That has a widely available PDF). I’m going to try to save up to hire translators for the material on my website so there are as few language barriers as possible. Remember who is most hurt by these rulings.
For now, I just started @repealthesehands, and feel free to bookmark it and also send along any helpful information you may find. I’m opening submissions and asks.
I don’t know how bad surveillance will get in terms of ISPs reporting what family planning websites people view to the state, for example, but I’m assuming that’s already happening or will very soon. I know people use VPNs if they are enrolled at heavily religious universities or other repressive environments to access sexuality and sexual health information, but VPNs are not free. My website may have a fake donut shop menu as a front page or something. I’ll figure it out. We will figure it out. I love you and you deserve body autonomy. <3
