She had never seen someone so pretty.
Standing in the corner of the store looking at comic books stood a girl Max assumed was right around her age.
Her beautiful hair was glittering in the light of the sun and her skin was clear as day, she wore the most basic clothes but Max still thought she looked stunning in them.
Taking her by surprise was how Lucas then walked over to her, calling out and starting a casual conversation she couldn't hear.
After a while of the redhead walking around without a goal trying to not glance over at you and Lucas every couple of seconds, she was extremely confused, were you his girlfriend? Friend? It was weird that he'd never told the rest of the party about the girl. Seeing that she looked so important to him.
But just as the redhead looked over again, she met eyes with the girl, who then smiled at her. The boy next to her noticing this finally called his friend over.
Shy she walked over trying to act like she didn't care.
"I'm Max, nice to meet you"
She said shaking your hand, feeling the warmth of it and feeling slightly flustered at the intense stare from the other girl.
"Hi I'm y/n!"

My thoughts on Max in s4 (and Billy)
I don’t know if other people with childhood trauma can relate to that, but :
When I watched Stranger things season 4, I was kinda like : “c’mon, Max, Billy was a bad person ! How can you feel bad for him when he was a piece of shit ?”. But at the same time, I understood it so much, and I know that this is why I didn’t want her to feel that way. All that guilt.
Her, being so depressed, was showing what it is to live after something so traumatic happened (I mean that we don’t really see the others dealing with that side of PTSD as much)
Okay so, my abuser(s) are not dead, i even still live partially with some of them. Like, I know the wrong they did, that they hurt me and others but it’s so difficult, especially when they are family, to not feel bad when they're hurting. You hate them but at the same time, you know they are like that because they were also hurt.
Episode 4 made me cry like hell. I wanted her to live, to be with people who actually care about her, and not be stuck with the memories of her abuser. Billy made her feel guilty when he was alive (because he needed to watch after her and because they moved to Hawkins) and still made her feel that way when he died. His power over her didn’t die with him. Her memories of him even twisted a bit, because of his sacrifice, she kinda thought : “oh, but he wasn’t that bad”.
HE WAS.
Billy apologist are wrong, I’m sorry, but I can’t. It’s just a disrespect to Max’s character and all people who were abused. I think Billy is an interesting character, I’m not like saying people can’t like him at all (you can like “villains”, that’s not wrong. You just have to acknowledge the wrong they did at some point (I know that's an entirely different discussion, but yeah))
It’s a difficult topic, I’m coming from a place where I empathize way too much with Max and his other victims to forgive Billy even if he was abused. You can’t say that what he did wasn't that a big of a deal : he was a bully, a racist, and a misogynist.
Maybe, if he had some of a redemption arc, my point of view could’ve changed a bit (his sacrifice doesn't count). Like with Steve, who had kinda like 2 seasons of character development in a good way. Even if he did things that were wrong, he acknowledged what he did and grew (I don’t remember everything of the show, so potentially fan fictions helped me love him much more lmao).
But I don’t forget what he did.
And what’s for the end of volume 2, when I watched it the first time, I kinda wanted Max to die OKAY WAIT HERE ME OUT, HERE ME OUT !
Because, it WAS so CRUEL to do that. She finally wanted to live, and killing her would’ve been HORRIBLE. It would’ve shown that the good guy’s don’t always win, and it echos with Robin’s line where she says that she doesn’t think they are going to make it this time. (yeah, I love a good angst to tear my heart apart. I was crying, throwing up when Max begged to stay alive).
I’m like happy she’s alive now, she is one of my favorite characters and I would literally die for her. They HAVE to let her stay alive now, they can’t do the “is she going to die or not ?” 3 times.
So I want to see what they are going to do with her character, now that we know that she wants to live. I hope she doesn’t stay in a coma most of the season, and that she isn’t going to be miraculously fine after waking up. It’s not my place to say if it would be okay for her to be a disabled character because Sadie Sink isn’t disabled, so I’m not going further with that. I just hope they aren’t going to rush the rest of her character arc.
And I want her to be happy with her new family, because we love a good found family.

For anyone who wanted the times of london review (spoilers obvs and avoid if avoiding reviews)
It’s spring break 1986 and the cute kids from the American science fiction show have almost grown up — zits, chest hair and all. But then so have its fans, allowing creators, the Duffer brothers to ramp up the scares in this brilliantly dark fourth series — conceived in 2019 but delayed thanks to Covid.
If the first seasons of Stranger Things nodded to ET the Extra-Terrestrial and Stand by Me, this one (which comes in two “volumes”, with staggered releases) genuflects to A Nightmare on Elm Street. If we were in any doubt, they have even cast Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Krueger.
The gang of teenagers has splintered — and there are some new faces. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) has grown her hair and is the butt of Mean Girls-style bullying in California, where she is living with Joyce (Winona Ryder), Will (Noah Schnapp) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton). They are joined in the sunshine by new dude Argyle (Eduardo Franco), a pizza delivery driver who provides them with wheels, a Musical Youth soundtrack on his car stereo and this series’ only weakness — his irritating stoner schtick.
Back in Hawkins the rest of the original gang are no longer a unit. Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), still the court jester, and Mike (Finn Wolfhard, channelling Joey Ramone) have started at high school and are members of the Hellfire Club, a home for nerds, led by newbie Eddie (Joseph Quinn — excellent). Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin, sporting a natty flattop) has fallen in with a bunch of jocks, Nancy (Natalia Dyer) is a student journalist, Robin (Maya Hawke) and Steve (Joe Keery) are working in a video shop. Max (Sadie Sink), traumatised by her brother Billy’s death, is withdrawn and living in a trailer park.
It’s not long before the peril kicks in. Spoiler alert! Former Hawkins cop Hopper (David Harbour), presumed dead, remerges in a vicious Soviet prison, from which Joyce and the Russophile Murray (Brett Gelman) attempt to spring him. Eleven, who still assumes her proxy pop Hopper dead, is doubting her own moral centre — and who she trusts.
Meanwhile, in Hawkins a schoolgirl starts having visions involving a grandfather clock and dies in bizarre circumstances, thanks to a humanoid monster called Vecna. But the town’s finger points to Eddie, this show’s Boo Radley. When Max begins to have dreams (Sink is superb) the kids realise the Upside Down is still imposing on their town, with Vecna making a beeline for the most vulnerable.
This leads our detective duo, Nancy and Robin, to a mental hospital to speak to Victor Creel (Englund), the only man who has ever survived an attack by Vecna. A Kate Bush song becomes an unlikely antidote to evil in a finale to volume one that had me in pieces.
Fans of the early series have nothing to worry about: Stranger Things still balances sweetness, laughs and horror like no other show — even if the scares have got jumpier.

[ad_1] As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work. "Stranger Things" season four delivers a new wave of supernatural mayhem, questionable haircuts, and, of course, fashion inspiration. With the latest episodes partially set in the fictional town of Lenora Hills, CA, there's a noticeable shift in the cast's wardrobe to channel the laidback California aesthetic of the '80s. Think: patterned button downs, graphic tees, and pastel colorways galore. As it turns out, not every outfit worn on screen was culled from a vintage store; some were made specifically for the show in partnership with Quiksilver, and fans can shop the exact pieces online right now. The Netflix show's costume designer, Amy Parris, worked with Quiksilver over the span of three years to create a collection of clothes inspired by '80s surf culture, digging into the brand's archives to revive designs from the time period. These re-created styles pop up on main characters and extras throughout season four, and include Nancy Wheeler's (Natalia Dyer) denim jacket, Max Mayfield's (Sadie Sink) blue and yellow zip-up, and much of Argyle's (Eduardo Franco) wardrobe. Parris and Quiksilver also produced additional apparel and accessories, so fans can rep Surfer Boy Pizza, the Hellfire Club, Lenora Hills, and the Upside Down. "Quiksilver was an integral part of California fashion in the 1980s," Parris told Gear Patrol. "['Stranger Things'] is so true to the period that it only made sense to infuse Quiksilver archive pieces through the show this season. Together, Quiksilver and I worked meticulously to make sure the fit, fabric, and feel of each garment was both true to the period and akin to the characters' closets." The "Stranger Things" x Quiksilver collaboration includes T-shirts, shorts, jackets, sunglasses, hats, bags, and even swimsuits, with prices ranging from $25 to $160. Stranger Things Returns Bigger and Darker Than Ever Before
[A/N]: I’m currently enrolled in a Magazine Writing class at university, in which we write magazine-style feature essays. For one of my assignments, we got to do a review essay on a media of our choice. I, of course, went with the second season of Stranger Things!
My professor wound up really loving it, she’s even going to use it to teach future classes! Some of you guys said you were curious to read it, so here it is! Small disclaimer: I kind of spill the tea on just a few things that I didn’t like about the season, so please don’t hate me for my opinions!
After the first season of Stranger Things skyrocketed into the pop-culture stratosphere last summer, the bar for the second installment was set dauntingly high. The creators of the infamous Netflix original series, twin brothers Ross and Matt Duffer, were no longer unknown underdogs with minimal experience under their belts, but rather household names credited with creating one of Netflix’s most popular television series to date.
Stranger Things 2 was released on October 27, 2017. The installment was largely promoted as a cinematic sequel, despite the season’s nine-episode composition. This would prove to be risky. “Netflix was like, ‘Don’t do that, because sequels are known to be bad,’” Matt Duffer said to Entertainment Weekly, recounting what had happened upon pitching the second season. “I was like, ‘Yes, but what about T2 and Aliens and Toy Story 2 and Godfather II?’ We want people to argue about what season is better. I want the debate. I want the Toy Story debate!”
So, now that the second season has been released, one looming question remains: Could Stranger Things 2 possibly live up to the first season?
Yes.
When we return to Hawkins, Indiana, the fictional town where Things is set, we’re reunited with all the characters we came to love in the previous installment. Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb Mclaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) are now 13 years-old and back to doing what they love: geeking out over video games. Joyce (Winona Ryder), Will’s mother, has a new love interest in her life. Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Mike’s older sister, is still mourning the loss of her best friend from the previous season, while also dealing with the ongoing love triangle between Steve (Joe Keery), the once hard-hearted jock turned softie, and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Will’s older brother and the quiet, ever-dedicated introvert. Police Chief Hopper (David Harbour) is back to dealing with the dull crimes of Hawkins residents, notably two farmers arguing over who poisoned the other’s pumpkin patch.
But, in typical Stranger Things fashion, nothing is as it seems. Will, having been rescued from The Upside Down (a dark, mirrored dimension of our world) in the last season, is still struggling with the trauma of his experience. The newly re-staffed Hawkins Laboratory is still shrouded with secrets. And who could forget about Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), the adorable, bad-ass, telekinetic 13-year-old who seemingly disappeared in last season’s finale?
To quote Matt Duffer, “It’s cliché to say bigger and darker,” but the second season of Stranger Things is exactly that, though it does take its time building up to it. While last season dropped viewers right into the action, this season is much more of a slow build. The first few episodes feel more like character studies than a sci-fi thriller, but it works. The Duffers have created a sandbox full of diverse and lovable characters, and now they get to play in it. There are several scenes that, while adding little to the overarching plot, are entertaining in and of themselves, as they just show the characters being themselves, like Mike and Lucas arguing over who gets to be Venkman (à la Ghostbusters) for Halloween, Steve providing Dustin with hair styling advice, Joyce struggling to play back a VHS-C tape, or Eleven breathlessly captivated by the soap operas she watches on TV.
While the last season kept characters’ plotlines grouped into three main categories (the kids, the teens, and the adults), season two blurs these borders. Relationships seamlessly broaden outside their natural boundaries as new character dynamics are explored. In particular, the bonds that form between Steve and Dustin, as well as Hopper and Eleven, are heart-warming and ingenious combinations. Both pairings provide not only humorous fun, but emotional weight, and the acting chemistry between the respective performers is undeniable.
However, the new season is definitely not all fun and games. As the episodes go on, the plot slowly builds upon itself, taking small moments and extrapolating them. Events that seem mundane, such as Will feeling chilly or Dustin finding a slug-like creature in his trash can, turn out to have monstrous consequences (no pun intended).
Nowhere is this phenomenon best executed than through Schnapps’ performance as Will Byers. In season one, Will hardly had any screen time, but in the new installment, he’s the primary driver behind all the main action. His performance starts off with a subdued Will, an average kid who feels isolated by his peers. When he tells his older brother, Jonathan, that he’s sick of feeling like “a freak,” because of how carefully he’s treated, his voice aches with the painstaking frustration of any child who just wants to live a normal life. But by the final episodes, in grating contrast, Schnapp’s performance explodes into a frenzied, darkened terror. As the darkness from the Upside Down overwhelms Will, Schnapp writhes in convulsive fits, screams in complete and utter agony, and at times (perhaps most horrifically) is completely, emotionlessly, and hauntingly still.
Despite being only 13 years old, Schnapp completely excels in Stranger Things 2, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his powerful performance makes him one of the youngest Emmy-award winners to date. His performance, along with the continually solid delivery from the rest of the cast, makes the show.
While the season may start slow, the payoff is completely worth the wait; it all cumulates in an electrifying, heart-pounding final two episodes that are some of the best hours of television I’ve ever seen.
However, this new season is not without its faults. The story falters when it dares to step outside of Hawkins. Two new characters are introduced: young tomboy Max (Sadie Sink) and her Jack-Nicholson-esque older brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery), but both feel largely one-dimensional. While not unlikable, Max doesn’t add much to the overall arc of the story, and largely serves as a plot device to create tension between Dustin and Lucas. Her brother Billy, while terrifying, often feels like he’s just there to bide time for the show and add a little drama on the side. There’s definitely potential to be explored with both characters, but this season leaves them thoroughly underdeveloped.
The biggest step outside of Hawkins takes place in episode 7, one of the most polarizing episodes in the whole series. The Lost Sister spends the entirety of its runtime taking Eleven out of Hawkins and into Chicago, where she meets up with a rag-tag gang of criminals who have darker intentions lurking beneath the surface. The Duffer Brothers insist that this episode was necessary, stating that “Eleven’s journey kind of fell apart, like the ending didn’t work, without it.” Even though the episode does give Eleven the opportunity to grow and strengthen as an individual, it’s unfortunately filled with unlikeable characters, feels painfully long and repetitive, and is the only episode of the series that I might consider skipping upon re-watch.
The Duffer Brothers reportedly want a four-season run for the series, but in order to do this, they’ll have to master the balance of expanding Hawkins while also staying true to the heart of the show. Season 2 shows hints of this, but it’s still a work-in-progress. Nevertheless, the new season is deeply satisfying and a true love-letter to its fans. I had the pleasure of watching it surrounded by friends and family, and throughout the entirety of its nine-hour-runtime, we were cheering, pleading, screaming, laughing, crying, and having the time of our lives, something that I believe is a welcome and much-needed relief.
Even though the original season of Stranger Things aired only a year ago, the world, particularly the United States, has arguably changed since its July 2016 release. Trump was elected into office. Three major hurricanes tore apart regions like Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. We’ve seen over 17 terrorist-related attacks, including the worst mass shooting to date.
As tension seeps deeper into our world, the darkness can often feel suffocating. This is similarly mirrored in Stranger Things 2. The first season was bright with childlike ingenuity. Even when attempting a feat so immensely impossible as saving their best friend, Will, from another dimension, the characters found strength through relying on each other and relating their problems to familiar entities, like Dungeons and Dragons.
In contrast, despite all the monsters, superpowers, and multiple dimensions, the second season is weighted with the gravity of reality. The boys have to learn that not every problem can be solved like a board game. As Mike states when discussing how the boys should protect Will, “This isn’t D&D. This is real life.”
The second season is much darker, and not just in a figurative sense. The lighting often shadows scenes in blacks, reds, and yellows — colors that traditionally represent deceit, hazard, aggression, danger, and fear.
The violence is more graphic as well. Instead of a lone Demogorgon monster creeping out of The Upside Down and capturing a single victim, there are hoards that feast upon their prey with bloodied vigor. No character is safe as even the lives of the children are continually put on the line.
Times have changed. The stakes have changed.
But despite all this, it would be thoroughly inaccurate to write Stranger Things off as a depressing, nihilist series. For with every gruesome horror, there are pulsating moments of hope and light that continue to carry the show just as strongly as they did in season one. One of the most heart-wrenching and warming moments takes place in the penultimate episode, The Mind Flayer, in which Joyce, Mike, and Jonathan attempt to reach the remaining ounce of Will that hasn’t been swallowed up by the demonic force possessing him. Though tears stream down their faces and their voices are laden with sorrow, they powerfully recount their happiest memories spent with him: Mike meeting Will on the first day of preschool, Jonathan building a fort with Will after their father walked out on them, and Joyce’s proud recollection of Will’s 8th birthday, in which he drew a spaceship for her with his new box of 120 crayons. Will stares back at them, shaking, a single, intense light illuminating his wide-eyed face.
The moment stands out as one of the best written, directed, and acted scenes in the whole season, and reminds not only the show’s characters, but we as viewers, to never give up. Even when it seems that all we love has been lost, there is light, there is strength, and there is hope.

CHUCK (2017)
Starring Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, Naomi Watts, Ron Perlman, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Rapaport, Morgan Spector, Pooch Hall, Wass Stevens, Megan Sikora, Melo Ludwig, Sadie Sink, Jason Jones, Catherine Corcoran, Ivan Martin, Angela Marie Roy, William Hill and John Brodeur.
Screenplay by Jeff Feuerzeig and Jerry Stahl.
Directed by Philippe Falardeau.
Distributed by IFC Films. 98 minutes. Rated R.
It makes a certain amount of sense that Chuck – a film based upon the hard-knock life of 70s New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner – would open with a chyron quoting a line from a fictional movie character.
It is because that quote was from Rocky Balboa, the classic boxing film role which was loosely based upon Wepner’s life. Sylvester Stallone, an unknown struggling actor and boxing fan, wrote the screenplay for Rocky in a rush after Wepner’s brief brush with fame – going 15 rounds with heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.
The character had many differences from Wepner as well. Wepner was a ranked heavyweight, though not the top-ranked one, so it was not a total stretch that he would get the fight. Rocky was a ham-and-egger who never had even sparred with a ranked opponent, so the idea of fighting the champ was a total fantasy. Rocky was an introverted, single Philadelphian, while Wepner was an outgoing, married father from New Jersey.
However, several of the traits from Wepner’s story were used in Rocky. Like Rocky, Wepner was a brutish boxer, not very lithe, but he could take a hit and he had a hard punch. He was a lesser-known white fighter who was chosen as something of a gimmick when the champ’s original opponent was not able to fight. Wepner had done some time as a collector for a local loan shark – though Wepner was no longer doing that when the fight came up. He became a local working-class hero, a beloved underdog. And his opponent did not take him at all seriously until he finally realized that this guy was really there to fight.
It was a terrific story, and Rocky became a film classic, winning the Best Picture Oscar in 1977.
Ironically, after Rocky became such a huge hit, Ali’s manager Don King went to the well again, this time picking a mostly unknown Uruguayan boxer named Alfredo Evangelista to offer their own Rocky story. Ali, who was already on the downslope on his career, danced around and allowed the challenger to stay on his feet all 15 rounds, but it was no real contest. That gimmick and the fight have pretty much been forgotten.
And honestly, other than by hardcore fight fans, the Ali-Wepner fight is only slightly more well-remembered. Therefore, it does make an intriguing movie idea – a man who never quite made anything of himself, but still was able to bask in the glow of proximity to fame.
It’s a fascinating story, but strangely, in a way, that was a story that had already been told, in Rocky. The fight itself was just part of Chuck’s story, in fact the big fight is over less than 40 minutes into the film. More of the film is about the man’s fall from grace after his almost-brush with fame.
As far as the film reveals, Wepner never had another major bout in his career after his inspirational Ali fight. In fact, the only two other fights Chuck investigates at all were novelty gigs, exhibition fights with wrestler Andre The Giant and Viktor, the bear from the Clint Eastwood film Paint Your Wagon.
Instead, Wepner was seduced by his minor fame – first because of the bout, later because of the movie. Suddenly everyone wanted to know him, he was the most popular guy in any bar. Wepner gave in to his womanizing tendencies, lost his wife and daughter, drank way too much, got involved in drugs and watched his life spin further and further out of control.
Sadly, it is far from a surprising story, but Chuck tells it with heart, verve, and proficiency. The film is leavened by strong performances – particularly by Liev Schreiber as the very flawed, but essentially good-hearted galoot who gets more caught up in his dreams than his reality.
Because it appears that Wepner was always much more interested in where he wanted to be than where he was. Seeing himself in the movies – even before Rocky was made – he never stopped to look at his reality. (Ironically, for a film that revolves its plot around Rocky – and it was probably just a matter of licensing – but Chuck shows significantly more clips of Anthony Quinn’s classic film Requiem for a Heavyweight, which was apparently Wepner’s favorite, than it does of Rocky.)
In the long run, I’m not sure the Wepner’s life story warranted a big-screen treatment, as it has gotten here. However, I’m glad Chuck was made. A smart, funny, era-specific (love that 70s soundtrack!) cautionary tale about brushes with sudden fame, the story is even more trenchant in today’s fame-obsessed environment than it was when the story took place.
More importantly, it tells a tale of real, imperfect people, losing their way sometimes but always trying to find their way back. Chuck will never be a hugely beloved film – like… say… Rocky – but I have a feeling it will get a small-but-passionate following.
Chuck Wepner’s life was far from being picture-perfect, but in its own way it was pretty fascinating.

Lucy the Disc Jockey
S3;E26 ~ April 12, 1965
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
Lucy wins a mystery sound contest on the radio, winning $25 and the chance to be disc jockey for a day. Naturally, things don't go smoothly when she takes over the studio.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Pat Harrington (Gordon Felson) is probably best remembered as Schneider on the 1975 sitcom “One Day at a Time.” Between 1959 and 1960 he played the recurring role of Pat Hannigan in “Make Room for Daddy” also shot at Desilu. He died on January 6, 2016 at age 86.
His nickname is “Fair Felson”.
Tumblr media
Variations on the title of this episode include “Lucy and the Disc Jockey” and “Lucy is a Disc Jockey.”
This episode was not intended to be the season finale, “Lucy the Stockholder” (S3;E25) was. It was shot in late 1964 and was supposed to air on March 15, 1965 but it kept getting pre-empted so it ended up being the season three finale.
Tumblr media
This episode employs dozens of sound effects, many more than a usual “Lucy Show” episode.  Sound Engineer Eldon E. Campbell and Glen Glen Sound Company deserve credit for their creativity.
Tumblr media
From September 1964 to August 1965 (from shoot date to air date) Lucille Ball had her own daily radio show “Let’s Talk To Lucy” on CBS Radio. Although she did not play music, she talked to celebrities as herself, not in character, about a variety of subjects.
Tumblr media
Viv stayed up watching “The Late Late Show” on TV. They were airing the James Cagney movie where he push the grapefruit into his girlfriend's face. Viv is referring to The Public Enemy (1931). The film featured Sam McDaniel (Hattie's brother) who was the first African American face on “I Love Lucy” in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5).
Tumblr media
After playing the mystery sound, Felson announces the return to “the swing sounds of Jan Garber.” Jan Garber (1894-1977) was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and became a bandleader known for ‘sweet’ and ‘swing’ jazz.  His nickname was “The Idol of the Air Lanes.”
Tumblr media
There couldn’t be a show about radio without Lucy’s trusty red transistor radio.  It turns up in every season of “The Lucy Show” - even when Lucy moves to California.
Tumblr media
Listening to the hourglass (egg timer) a sleepy Viv makes a joke about hearing Lawrence of Arabia calling for help. Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 epic historical film based on the life of  T.E. Lawrence and taking place mostly in the desert. It won seven Oscars including Best Picture.
Tumblr media
Lucy once again has trouble with the kitchen sink garbage disposal unit just as she did in “Lucy, the Coin Collector” (S3;E13, right). Before Lucy turns it on to hear what sound it makes, Viv asks her if the plumber fixed it. These two episodes would have been aired closer together had “Lucy the Disc Jockey” not been pre-empted so often.
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney says that the 'Name the Sound' contest is the silliest thing since Mrs. Hush. The Mrs. Hush contest was a feature of “Truth or Consequences” radio show in 1947. The quiz show had already sponsored a Mr. Hush contest, where listeners had to identify the voice of a person of note from whispered clues. After more than two and a half months of guessing, Mrs. Hush turned out to be Clara Bow. The winner received a new car, private plane, home appliances, a mink coat, diamond ring and other assorted prizes totaling $23,000 in value.
Tumblr media
When Mr. Mooney hears the cacophony of Lucy and Viv trying out different sounds on various household objects, he calls it a “Housewives Hootenanny.” “Hootenanny” was a television variety show featuring folk music acts that aired on ABC from 1963 to 1964. Lucy's daughter Chris mentioned the show in “Chris Goes Steady” (S2;E16) aired in January 1964.
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney compares the noise in Mrs. Carmichael's kitchen to a Spike Jones rehearsal. Lindley Armstrong ‘Spike’ Jones (1911–65) was an American musician and bandleader specializing in satirical arrangements of popular songs and classical music. Songs receiving the Jones treatment were punctuated with gunshots, whistles, cowbells and outlandish and comedic vocals. Jones was born four months after Lucille Ball and died two weeks after this episode finally aired.
Tumblr media
Angry that Mr. Mooney has also entered (and won) the contest after he said it was silly, Lucy calls him a “banking Benedict Arnold.”  Benedict Arnold (1741-1801) was an American soldier in the revolutionary war who defected to fight for the British. His name has become synonymous with a traitor ever since.
Lucy asks why Mrs. Mooney wasn’t the one defrosting the fridge. Mr. Mooney replies that she was out chopping wood, contributing to the series’ verbal depiction of Mrs. (Irma) Mooney as a sturdy woman.
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney deems any voice contest between him and Lucy like comparing Walter Cronkite to Donald Duck. Walter Cronkite (1916-2009) was the voice and face of CBS News for nearly fifty years. He reported on some of the most dramatic events of the 20th century, such as the Kennedy Assassination, the Vietnam War, and the space program. He was considered to be “the most trusted man in America.”  Donald Duck is one of Walt Disney's most enduring cartoon creations. He first appeared in 1934 and his squawking raspy voice was provided by Clarence Nash.
For the contest, Mr. Mooney is prepared to recite the Gettysburg Address, Hamlet's Soliloquy, and  Edgar Allen Poe's “The Raven.” Lucy is prepared to recite Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Little Bo Peep, and Tubby the Tuba.
Tumblr media
Instead, Mr. Felson asks them to do traditional tongue-twisters. They first are asked to say “Big Black Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers” and then (after Mr. Mooney loses to Lucy and threatens to examine the radio station's mortgage) “Red Leather Yellow Leather,” each three times, fast and clear. Lucy wins again and receives applause from the studio audience for her performance.
The call letters of the radio station are WLDJ representing the first letter of each word in the episode's title: “Lucy the Disc Jockey.”
Tumblr media
WLDJ is a one-man radio station with one sponsor: Spangle Soda Pop. Gordon Felson says he hasn't had a day off in nine years. Although the name Spangle Soda Pop is fictional, there was a chew-able candy in England names Spangles.
Tumblr media
This is one of the rare episodes in which a character actually speaks the title of the episode in the dialogue!
While reading a sports report on the air, Lucy announces that Maury Thompson is at bat. Maury was the camera coordinator for this episode as well as on “I Love Lucy.” In “Drafted” (ILL S1;E11) Ricky receives a letter from the War Department signed by Maurice A. Thompson.
Tumblr media
When Lucy tries to see the title of the song on the spinning turntable and gets dizzy, she says “No wonder. It's a Dean Martin album.” This is a joke about Martin's drinking. She also made a joke about Dean Martin and his proclivity for alcohol in “Lucy the Stockbroker” (S3;E25). A year later, Lucy Carmichael dates Dean Martin.  His stuntman is named Eddie Feldman, which sounds similar to Eddie Felson, the radio host played by Pat Harrington.
Lucy gets a phone request to play a song dedication to: Hilda and Babs and Jan and Ella and Molly and Dotty and Roselle and Mimi (like Eisenhower) and Mildred and Doris and Nora and Emma and Maryann and Evelyn and Sadie and Emma (a redhead) and SueEllen (one name) and Gertrude and Estelle and Joan and Connie and Sylvia.
Tumblr media
The man wants her to play “You're the One for Me.” The song was sung by Freddie Rose in 1927, so it is no surprise Lucy can’t find the record. Instead, she plays “Bing Crosby Sings Stephen Foster.” The Crosby album was released in 1946.  For the ‘record’ (no pun intended), President Johnson's wife was named Mamie, not Mimi.
When Lucy puts the needle down on the record, a voice sounding very much like Crosby’s sings to the tune of “Camptown Races”:
“Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum Stephen Foster.”
And then suddenly stops!
Tumblr media
With the studio covered in the white foam from the fire extinguisher, Lucy sings a bit of “White Christmas” as the episode (and season three) fade out. "White Christmas" is a 1942 Irving Berlin song. The Bing Crosby version is the best-selling single of all time. In 1965 The Supremes recorded it for their Christmas album.
Tumblr media
SIGNING OFF!
This is the last episode featuring Vivian Vance as a regular co-star. She will return for guest-star appearances in 3 future episodes.
This is the last new episode to be broadcast by CBS in black and white. When season four begins, viewers will finally see Lucy's hair in color!
This is the last time Lucy and Mr. Mooney will live in Danfield, NY. The pair relocate to California at the start of season four.
Some insiders say that Vivian Vance had decided to leave the show unless she got more creative control. Ball's advisers tell her Vance wanted a partnership, which wasn't true. It was decided not to meet Vivian's demands, and Vance leaves the series. Lucille felt hurt and betrayed. This is a decision Ball regrets for the rest of her life. Without Vivian, Lucille toys with the idea of ending the series. Vivian wanted to have the stories revolve more around her if she was going to keep commuting to the set from Connecticut. She was exhausted and her marriage to John Dodds was deteriorating because he was bisexual and seeing other men when she wasn't around. Vivian also felt that Lucille let her down.
Tumblr media
The closing scene for this episode (Lucy crying amid the radio station destruction) was featured in the season four kaleidoscope opening credit sequence.
Tumblr media
“The Lucy Show” was replaced for the summer (June-September) by “Vacation Playhouse,” an anthology series of unsold TV pilots.
Callbacks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo was on the radio twice, both times on a quiz show hosted by Freddy Fillmore (Frank Nelson): “The Quiz Show” (ILL S1;E5) and “Lucy Gets Ricky on the Radio” (ILL S1;E32).
Tumblr media
Both of those episodes featured an illuminated “ON THE AIR” sign, just like “Lucy the Disc Jockey.”
Tumblr media
When Lucy flips an unlabeled switch on the console, it turns on a fan that blows away all her note cards.  In “Redecorating the Mertzes Apartment” (ILL S3;E8) a fan mistakenly activated blows feathers from the recently disemboweled armchair all over the room, ruining all their hard work.
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Ice Box Inconsistency! For this episode, Lucy's modern refrigerator has been replaced by an older model in order to facilitate the stunt of pulling the guts out of it. The refrigerator has also moved locations to make the gag physically possible.
Tumblr media
Sitcom Logic Alert!  Why would there be a switch for a free-standing oscillating fan on the console of a radio station control board?
Laugh Track! When the shelf of records comes crashing to the floor, Gary Morton’s loud guffaw can be heard on the soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Hoser!  Instead of plain water, the fire hose emits soapy suds, likely to imitate the foam that comes from a hand-held extinguisher. A fire hose would only produce plain water, not foam.
Name Game!  When taking a song request, a caller gives a long list of women’s names. Repeating them as she jots them down, Lucy says the name “Emma” twice and adds “That the same Emma you mentioned?  Oh, a redhead.”  This may be a scripted line, but it sounds very much like an ad lib by Ball to cover herself after repeating the name.
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Disc Jockey” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5

The first season, released in July 2016, stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cara Buono and Matthew Modine, with Noah Schnapp and Joe Keery in recurring roles. For the second season, Schnapp and Keery were promoted to series regulars, along with the additions of Sadie Sink, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin and Paul Reiser. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a girl with psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy's friends in their own search. The second season, titled Stranger Things 2, is set a year after the first, and deals with attempts of the characters to return to normal and consequences that linger from the first season. The Duffer Brothers developed the series as a mix of investigative drama alongside supernatural elements with childlike sensibilities, establishing its time frame in the 1980s and creating a homage to pop culture of that decade. Several themes and directorial aspects were inspired and aesthetically informed by the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King, among others, including several films, anime and video games. The first season was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. It received critical acclaim for its characterization, pacing, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, directing, writing, and homages to 1980s genre films. The series has received several industry nominations and awards, including winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2016, and receiving eighteen nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. On August 31, 2016, Netflix renewed the series for a second season of nine episodes, which was released on October 27, 2017. In December 2017, Netflix ordered a third season, which will consist of eight episodes. The Duffer Brothers have said that Stranger Things is likely to end after its fourth or fifth season. The first season begins in November 1983, when Will Byers is abducted by a creature from the Upside Down. His mother, Joyce, and the town's police chief, Jim Hopper, search for Will. At the same time, a young psychokinetic girl called Eleven escapes from the laboratory and assists Will's friends, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, in their own efforts to find Will. New Post has been published on Millie Bobby Brown Fan #MillieBobbyBrown #StrangerThings
New Post has been published on http://millie-bobby-brown.com/press-stranger-things-ep-shawn-levy-were-super-excited-for-season-3-cast-looks-back-on-season-2/
Press: ‘Stranger Things’ EP Shawn Levy: “We’re Super Excited” For Season 3; Cast Looks Back On Season 2
While plotlines for Season 3 of the Netflix show are largely under wraps for now, Stranger Things EP Shawn Levy said at PaleyFest on Sunday, “We are going back to work next month, and we’re super excited.” Judging by the legions of screaming fans in the audience, he’s not alone in that feeling.
The show, created by sibling team Matt and Ross Duffer, follows the supernatural adventures of a group of kids in 80s-era fictional small town Hawkins, and has been an enormous hit with audiences and critics alike. But rather than feed the Season 3 hysteria and reveal any spoilers, Levy and the show’s cast used the panel discussion to recall some favorite moments of Season 2, with Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the telekinetically-gifted Eleven, leading the charge.
“Season 1 was obviously very different,” she said, “because I had no clue who Eleven was, and I was just being introduced to the weirdest character on Earth.” But by the second season, she’d found her feet. “I kind of had that freedom of saying, ‘I don’t think Eleven would do that,’” she said, adding that the set had to have “double security” the second time around.
Levy recalled the strangeness of returning for Season 2, after finding themselves besieged by attention. “I remember us kind of huddling up and saying, ‘OK, so the world knows about us now. We’re just going to hunker down and trust the brothers,’ and it became a willful tuning out of all that noise.”
Something that came through in the discussion was the family-level affection the cast has for each other. David Harbour, whose role of Jim Hopper meant sharing a lot of one-on-one scenes with Brown, said he’d seen a new side of himself through getting to know her – an experience he called “a gift”.
“I don’t have a child,” he said, “so I don’t know what that’s like, and all my experiences of love have been romantic, or my parents, or my dog, so this was an unlocking of me as a human being; of a love that was human, but was pure in a way where you’d take a bullet for someone.”
“To be honest it was very challenging and we went through so many different emotions,” Brown pointed out. “We get angry at each other. We’re like father and daughter…those scenes were so raw and real.”
Those genuine friendships among the cast are, Levy said, a big reason for the show’s success. “We chose actors who are just authentic humans,” he said, “and it immediately resulted in the chemistry you see on screen. I think that’s why so many people connected to the show.”
Season 2 newcomer Sadie Sink found her confident, skateboarding character Max Mayfield really resonated with fans. “I had this one girl who was kind of falling into that world of, ‘I need to wear make-up, I need these clothes,’” she said. “Then she saw Max and thought, ‘Oh Max is confident and she doesn’t need to be someone who isn’t her, she can just be confident in her own skin.’ That was the most rewarding part for me.”
While Sean Astin claimed his Season 2 high point was, “I got to kiss Winona Ryder,” he added that he’d been satisfied with his character Bob’s death. “There was a moment in the first episode where I went to the Duffers and I said, ‘Please, when you kill me in the next episode or whenever, please let this guy do something heroic.’” Fortunately, Bob was allowed to save the day before meeting his end. “Bob got to know Basic,” Astin said, “and thwarted the enemy with a rudimentary knowledge of 1983 computers.”
It also emerged that 80s authenticity is a very serious business on set. The audience screamed in delight when Brown said, “They give us underwear. What are they called?”
“Tightey whities,” her cast mate Caleb McLaughlin chimed in.
But of course, educating the younger generation on the magic of 80s nostalgia extended well beyond wardrobe, Levy explained. “The Duffer brothers made basically a fake trailer of Stranger Things from movies that exist. That became required viewing for the kids.”
Brown said of first watching this 80s montage, “I was so weirded out when I watched it. I was like, ‘What is this?’ I was so confused. There was a shark and a ghost.” Brown said it included parts of Stand By Me – a fact that brought a smile to PaleyFest moderator and Stand By Me child star Wil Wheaton’s face. – Source

'Stranger Things' gets Comic-Con excited with freaky new trailer
One of the more anticipated panels at Comic-Con Saturday was for "Stranger Things," and it did not disappoint. As fitting with the show, just before things were to begin, lights flickered in Hall H and a letter covered wall began bulging letting us know it was time. It began with a recap video of Season 1, and then moderator Patton Oswalt came on promising footage that had never been seen before. The creators of "Stranger Things" premiered a trailer for the show's second season at Comic-Con on Saturday that was so new, even the cast hadn't seen it. The Duffer Bros. were joined by director Shawn Levy and stars Millie Bobby Brown, Matthew Modine and the crew of young actors who play a group of friends searching for their buddy who mysteriously disappears. Matt and Ross Duffer, along with Executive Producer Shawn Levy talked about the inspiration behind the show. “What would be the ultimate movie? Spielberg directing a beefy Stephen King book with a John Carpenter soundtrack,” Matt Duffer said. When Shawn Levy was first presented with the Stranger Things script, he could tell it was something great. “I knew that this combination of an 80’s backdrop, genre and character authenticity was going to be something special,” he shared. They continued by discussing the look and feel of the show, including the font choice for the opening titles and the synthesized sound heard on the series. The trailer shows that Will Byers, who went missing in the first season, continues to be haunted by the experience. "Will shows more bravery and you'll definitely learn how the Upside Down affected Will and you'll get more into his story line," said Noah Schnapp, the 12-year-old actor who plays Will. The Upside Down is an alternate dimension where Will spent time during his disappearance. It's similar to the characters' everyday world in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, except more creepy, rendered in grayscale and inhabited by a multi-limbed monster. Three new cast members were introduced who are joining the second season of the show: Paul Reiser portrays a government official, 15-year-old Sadie Sink plays a character named Max who joins the group of young boys, and Dacre Montgomery takes on a character he described as "a human antagonist." "I hope I can be scary enough," the actor said. Thirteen-year-old Brown, who plays the scene-stealing Eleven, shared how challenging it is to play a character who speaks so little. "It was difficult because obviously I had very few lines and I had to express everything with my face," the actress said. "But it gets easier when you feel more comfortable with your character... It's hard to keep a straight face with, you know, teen boys because they play pranks and they tell a lot of jokes when I'm doing an emotional scene." The camaraderie among the cast was clear as they watched the trailer for the new season. They craned their necks to see the giant screen from their position on the dais, then hugged afterward. The sci-fi series is set to return to Netflix on Oct. 31. Highlights from the Stranger Things Comic-Con panel:
Noah Schnapp says that Will will show more bravery in Season 2, and “you’ll learn how the Upside Down affected Will.” Beyond that, though, he was limited as to what he could say, because spoilers.
Finn Wolfhard doesn’t think Mike realizes that he’s smarter than the rest of the kids. “I think he’s oblivious to everything,” he said.
Here’s a secret: Caleb McLaughlin wasn’t always a master of a slingshot. The young actor held it wrong in the beginning, so he had to teach himself how to do it right, with the help of the Duffers to learn how to do it right.
It takes time for Millie Bobby Brown to get in the zone of crying, but it gets easier. What might not be so easy is the influence from her young co-stars “It’s hard to keep a straight face with teen boys because they play pranks and they tell a lot of jokes when I’m doing an emotional scene.”
The actors playing new Season 2 characters then came out – Billy, Max’s older stepbrother as played by Dacre Montgomery; Max aka “Mad Max” as played by Sadie Sink; and Dr. Owens who will be played by Paul Reiser.
David Harbour asked the audience if they’re ready for a trailer. You can imagine the response. You can see the trailer here. The reaction to the trailer seemed to echo the reaction to Season 1, with fans particularly being responsive to 1980’s references and the first sighting of Eleven in the reel.
“Dropping a little bit of spice is an honor. It’s been a lot of fun,” Dacre Montgomery says about what he’ll add to the show.
“I come in from the government to clean Brenner’s mess, and certain things happen,” Paul Reiser said of his character.
Newcomer Sadie Sink already knew her costars Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo, as they worked on Broadway together. Her character “Mad Max” moves to town with question.
A surprise guest started the Q&A with a question for the cast, asking if Barb would be in Stranger Things Season 2. The question came from Shannon Purser, the actress who played Barb, who was able to go to the podium on stage to ask the question to her former co-stars. Alas, it’s not happening. “But it would be Justice for Barb,” David Harbour said. “Barb will be avenged.”
