I finished Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom trilogy*, and I enjoyed books 2&3: Lireal and Abhorsen, I did! But Sabriel cut to the bone, and even two books later it was all I could think about. (TO ME!) It was the best by a massive margin.
*I know there are more!!
Lireal and Abhorsen tell this grand and exciting story of identity, depression, fear, saving the world, and I loved that, but Sabriel was a coming of age story about parental death. Sabriel said that death is something to be managed, respected, but never mastered. It said that even if you can put your fist around death, it’s going to take from you and it’s going to be permanent - because what comes back is never what you lost.
It was so painful to watch Sabriel’s quest to save her father fail, because that’s what happens, your parents die, and you can’t go with them - not right now, anyway. Death waits for you, and you can even look in on it sometimes, but you can’t stay, and if you try to you’ll freeze, or drown. You just live, and mourn, and remember, and find new people to hold onto. You grow into your father’s old coat, you adopt his cat, and you take care of his house because he took care of you, and he loved you.

Note
Okay but Sabriel...so good
RIGHT?! And the original trilogy holds up pretty well!
You're telling me this girl my age has spooky death related powers/responsibilities and as her coming of age has to go save her dad from the coolest version of 'layers of hell' anyone has ever introduced to me? And she gets a cat who is a barely contained Eldritch being that may or may not want to kill her? And she gets to revive a hot statue into a man that decides he loves her so much it makes him look stupid? SIGN ME UP!!!
"I love you, I hope you don't mind." Permanently changed my brain chemistry.
I was fundamentally altered by Mogget and Disreputable Dog (Kibeth my beloved!!)
Dream cosplay has always been Sabriel.
Do you have favorite parts of the book(s)?

Ten Books to Know Me:
@chubsthehamster put out a "participate if you want to" call, and I fucking love books, so why not! 1. Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke - Read this first in high school and it rewired my brain. Dense, intricate, a November day of a book, it is about the inequities of class, race, gender, and also about the dry stone wall down the lane and its intimacy with the ivy that's grown over it for the last century. There are magicians and academic confrontations.
2. Food in England, by Dorothy Hartley - Read this a year out of undergrad. This is the book that convinced me that I could actually do something worthwhile with my interest in history. It was also fundamental in kicking a few chunks out of my ivory tower, but that's probably a personal take-away rather than anything essential to the book. Learn a few hundred small practicalities that may or may not be applicable to modern life; you decide.
3. Sabriel, by Garth Nix - The first book that spoke to baby's latent goth tendencies. The worldbuilding still lives in the back of my head. Made me interested in WWI history. Read it in middle school, I think? It was such a breath of fresh air, and I admired the protagonist and her self-discipline and self-reliance so much. Probably the first book that made me really worry whether the characters would survive until the end, and boy howdy was that formative. Zombies, quests to save fathers, learning that the legacy you thought was a burden is actually your calling.
4. Ombria in Shadow, by Patricia A. McKillip - Read in undergrad, I think? I reread it a couple times a year. It's a go-to story for when I need something comforting and decadent. I love the gauzy quality of the worldbuilding, the understated approach to very real-world dangers. A royal bastard, a former royal mistress, and a sorceress' apprentice race to protect a child king and save the and the living soul of a city.
5. The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman, et al. - This story got me through my late teens and early twenties. Exactly the right flavor of tragedy to grab my brain and shake it like a maraca; fundamentally changed how I look at stories and narratives. Person-shaped cosmic mechanism denies personhood, falls face first into the hole he's been digging for himself for a billion years, hitting every consequence on the way down, and finds a morsel of peace at the end.
6. Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (聊齋誌異), by Pu Songling (蒲松齡) - I read this first while doing research for a fanfic and came away hungry for every bit of "classic" Chinese literature in English translation I could find. I've always had a fondness for supernatural anecdotes (The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries, by WB Yeats, etc), but this is on the list because it was the initial experience in an ongoing foray into classic and modern East and Southeast Asian literature.
7. Underland, by Robert Macfarlane - Read this a couple years ago. Everything you ever and never wanted to know about caves and being under the earth. The texture of Macfarlane's prose is unlike anything else, and he spends 500 pages leading you in and out of the dark.
8. Night Watch, by Terry Pratchett - This is my compromise instead of just listing every Terry Pratchett book. I read this when I was 12, and I mean it in earnest when I say it shaped how I think to this day. Pratchett's work is a load-bearing beam in my brain. Another grey book, but also lilac.
9. A People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn - Okay look, LOOK, I know what you're thinking, but I read this when I was a teenager living in an extremely conservative pocket of a very liberal state. It made me think, which I was good at avoiding because school came easy to me and I usually didn't have to engage my brain at all to have the right answers. I wish with all my heart that I could write to the teacher who assigned it, because it was the very first time anyone had ever made me read history outside a history textbook. I resented that man so much at the time, but I owe him my current career.
10. Stiff, by Mary Roach - Read this as a teen and finally got answers about death I hadn't gotten in a lifetime of religious education. I think I actually snuck it into Mass, because I have a distinct memory of cramming it between the cushion and arm of a pew. Sparked an interest in death and human remains that lead me closer to where I am today.
Please consider yourself tagged if you'd like to participate! And tag me back so I can add more books to my tbr list, please! <3

Let Me Care About You
Rating: Teen (mild gore, cussing) Word count: 2188 Content warnings: Canon-typical references to violence and injury Summary: Sam was badly injured on a hunt, and Gabriel is worried about him, though he doesn't want to show it for fear of being too vulnerable and pushing Sam away. Sam doesn't mind the attention. AO3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/44140506
Gabriel stared at the rickety old bed Sam was laid out on in the infirmary, eyebrows furrowed, an uncomfortable feeling in his chest that he couldn’t quite figure out.
It felt… Restricting, his feet wanted to move, but he didn’t; he would rather not get any closer than he had to, because Sam was just… No, no, no, absolutely not; Sam Winchester was, well, Sam Winchester, which meant he was off-limits.
But why, he asked himself, just because he was supposed to be Lucifer’s vessel? Well, Lucifer was dead now, so it wasn’t like he had any use for a corporeal body, and the thought of Sam being in that role made Gabriel’s skin crawl. He loved his brother dearly, but he would wish him upon absolutely no one except maybe Asmodeus; he would be getting popcorn for watching an interaction between those two. (As long as he was as far away from them as possible, of course.)
His hands gripped the railing near the stairs hard enough for his vessel’s knuckles to pale and whiten entirely; the metal creaked under the force of his celestial strength and discomfort.
Gabriel just wanted to sit with him.
Would that be so bad?
Of course, it would be because if he allowed himself to latch himself to Sam, to stand next to him all the time like he wanted, to hold him, to… Well, he would be royally fucked. Sam wouldn’t want him, Sam would call him weird, he would avoid Gabriel like the plague, and then their relationship would be ruined like every other good thing the archangel ever had in his life.
It just wasn’t worth it, he decided, and let go of the railing to retreat out of the infirmary quietly.
“Gabriel?”
Don’t turn back. Don’t even look at him. Pretend you didn’t hear him.
“Hey, wait.”
Fuck.
Gabriel slowly turned on his heel, putting on his best show business face. “Good morning, Samshine! Feeling any better?”
Sam blinked, seeming to be very slowly registering that question. “I don’t know. I got knocked out pretty fast before the rest of it. My leg burns like hell, but I guess it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever felt.”
“I hate to break it to you, but Dean administered a pretty heavy dose of morphine. I don’t think you want to see your leg right now.”
“Oh. I guess that’s why my head is fuzzy. Is it really that bad?”
“Yes, Sam, it’s that bad; that hellhound basically put you in a blender. You’re lucky it doesn’t have to be amputated, you know.”
“...Wait,” Sam muttered, and Gabriel could feel his wings bristle. He really hoped Sam didn’t remember that- “That hellhound… Gabriel, my leg was gone.” -Dammit.
“Yes, and now it’s back; stranger things have happened.”
“Did someone reattach it?” Sam asked, sounding almost… Scared.
“Uh… Yep, that would have been me.” Gabriel replied, unable to look directly at the hunter. “...Didn’t have enough grace to fully fix it, but… Hey, a gory leg is better than no leg at all.”
“Gabriel, you don’t have to talk to me from all the way over there, you know.”
“I’m fine where I am.”
“C’mere.”
“...Okay, princess.” Gabriel retorted, but did as he was asked, making his way down the steps, stopping about two feet from the bed.
Sam looked like shit. He was pale, his eyes were partially unfocused, his hair was a mess, and the bags under his eyes were far deeper and more pronounced than usual. It made Gabriel feel guilty that he couldn’t fully heal the hunter; he felt weak, like he had failed the man who had saved him.
How could he ever repay Sam for his hospitality after being rescued from hell like this? With no grace, and an inability to properly sort through his own feelings, he deserved far better than Gabriel-
His thoughts were interrupted by a quiet “thank you, Gabriel.” It broke him.
Tears stung the archangel’s eyes, threatening to fall against his will and humiliate him.
Even in his semi-delirious state, Sam could tell Gabriel was about to cry. “Gabe? Hey, what’s wrong?”
Gabriel took in a deep breath, letting it out with a shaking voice. “...I thought you were going to die.”
It hit Sam at that moment that Gabriel had been afraid, and he still was, over a measly human like him. “You…” Slowly, Sam extended his hand out to the angel. “Come sit down.”
“Where?”
“On the bed.”
It wasn’t like he never lied, but he would be a liar if he said he didn’t just want to wrap Sam up in his arms and hold him like he was the most precious thing in the world because, to Gabriel, he was.
So he sat down, since it would be as close as he was going to get. Still, he was only perched on the end, one leg still on the ground, the other balanced by his heel on the metal frame, up  against his chest. He was 50/50 on whether he should get back up or stay, and it showed.
“Talk to me, Gabe.” Sam requested, focusing on his friend as much as he could with how exhausted he was.
“Talk to you? What do you want me to say? I’m not going to say what I just told you a second time; it’s embarrassing, you know.”
“I’m the only person here. You don’t have to hide that sort of thing from me.”
“Of course, I have to hide it from you!” Gabriel snapped, refusing to meet Sam’s tired eyes. “I respect you too much to be throwing my stupid emotions at your feet for you to pick up!”
“You’re not ‘throwing your emotions at my feet,’ Gabriel, I’m asking for them.”
He paused, not having expected that response. “...Then you’re missing a pretty vital organ in your skull.”
“Are you calling me stupid?” Sam asked, laughing softly.
“No! Yes… Maybe. Not stupid like intellectually, but stupid like… Stubborn. You already patched me up after… After Asmodeus, and I haven’t even paid you back yet, I don’t want to give you more crap. I don’t want to keep owing you.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“You’re such a liar!”
“I don’t want anything from you, Gabe. I want you to be comfortable, I want you to feel safe here, you have no obligations except, I dunno, not breaking stuff.”
“Already screwed that one up several times,” Gabriel muttered.
“So you’re the one who broke the mug?”
“Maybe… But I’ll replace it. I should go replace it. I’m gonna go replace it now.” He said hurriedly, placing his other leg down to leave.
Then he felt something around his wrist, a hand, Sam’s hand. It was warm and strong; they were still those same hands that cut the wire from his mouth, that carried him back to his room those nights, that pulled his stubborn ass out of Apocalypse World. They were strong and calloused but still gentle, and it made him freeze in his tracks.
“It’s just a mug,” Sam assured. “It was cheap and ceramic, and we’ve had it for years. It already had a crack in it. Please, Gabriel, stop trying to run from me; I care about you.”
There was a long period of silence, the archangel fixated on looking anywhere but the hunter, until his other hand came up to gently guide his face back to him.
Gabriel let him do so, though if it had been anyone else, they would be dead. Tears were streaming down his face; he just couldn’t get them to stop. He hated it.
“That night when I said I needed you, I meant it. I still do; I wasn’t just saying that to get you out of your trance.”
“Maybe you need me, but you don’t want me, Sam. I’m too much.”
Sam’s hands moved from Gabriel’s cheek and wrist to his back, pulling him into a hug. “I know ‘too much’ when I see it, and it’s not you. If it were, I wouldn’t have been taking care of you after you escaped.”
Gabriel let out a sob against the hunter’s chest, slowly allowing himself to return the embrace. “You’re making it so hard not to get attached to you, you know,” He all but whimpered. There was so much pain in his voice.
“Just take it easy, man; not everything has to be such a fight. Let me care about you.”
For once in his life, Gabriel couldn’t think of what to say, so he just stayed quiet and listened to Sam’s heartbeat. A heartbeat he was so damn grateful he could still hear.
Neither of them let go of the other, taking comfort in the warmth and the silence around them.
After a while, Sam felt heavier, and his grip loosened, leading Gabriel to deduce he had fallen asleep.
As careful as possible so as not to wake him, he laid the hunter back down and pulled up the blanket.
Hesitantly, he brushed a few loose strands of hair from Sam’s face, a barely-there smile on his lips. Even when he was injured and exhausted, he was absolutely gorgeous; there was just no denying that.
Sam then mumbled something incoherent before tugging Gabriel down by the collar of his jacket and wrapping his arm around him.
“What did you say?” Gabriel chuckled.
“I said lay down…”
That was it. He was smitten, and there was no going back now.
-
Over the course of the next few days, Gabriel continued to visit Sam, getting more and more accustomed to expressing himself freely around him until, eventually, he was the one asking for cuddles.
Right now, he was tucked into Sam’s side, watching the hunter quietly with sparkling eyes, pupils dilated.
“What are you looking at?”
“You.”
“Why?”
Gabriel blinked, trying to come up with an answer that wouldn’t reveal how he was feeling. “...Because…. You… Um… You have something on your face.”
Sam frowned, patting his skin to try and figure out what the archangel was referring to. “I do? Where?”
“...It’s gone now! You got it!” Gabriel said hurriedly, averting his gaze so as not to incriminate himself.
Sam wasn’t buying it. “There wasn’t anything on my face. What were you looking at?”
“...You…” The archangel muttered, not loud enough for even himself to hear correctly, and Sam made a face.
“I can’t hear you.”
“...You! I was looking at you.” He huffed, still avoiding looking at the hunter but now hiding his face against the flannel of his companion’s shirt.
Sam’s face prickled with rosy heat; Gabriel was looking at him, just because? “For what?”
“What, I can’t look at you now?” Came the angel’s stubborn retort.
“You’re allowed to look at me. I’m just curious.”
Instead of responding, Gabriel just reached up and started messing with Sam’s hair, refusing to elaborate as to what he was doing no matter how many times he was asked. The hunter eventually just accepted it and closed his eyes, not minding the feeling of the angel’s hands in his hair. It was nice.
Gabriel worked tirelessly, fingers twisting around strands and looping sections around each other, even starting over a few times. He was hyperfocused, and ended up sitting several different ways, first in Sam’s arms, then behind him, then next to him, then on his lap, then back behind him again.
The clock ticked away, and the hunter found himself dozing off now and again, though Gabriel moving around and pulling on his hair would wake him.
After what felt like an eternity, he spoke. “Done!”
Sam reached up to feel his hair, curious about it. “What did you do to it?”
“Viking braids. Shield Maiden braids, to be specific.”
Sam grabbed his phone from the table next to the bed and opened the camera, immediately smiling when he saw just what Gabriel had done with his hair.
It had been braided in sections, two smaller braids on each side stretching all the way back, with a larger braid on top and some hair left to flow freely underneath. “No one’s ever done my hair before… This is really cool, actually. Where did you learn to do this?”
“Hello, I was a Norse god for centuries? It wasn’t just for fun, and I picked up lots of traditions along the way to blend in better.”
Sam looked up at him, smiling, and Gabriel rested his chin on Sam’s head. “What?”
“What else do you know?”
“About Norse culture? Everything. I know things that aren’t even in any books. I know songs, hairstyles, recipes, building techniques, magic, people, slang; you name it.”
“...Do you miss Norway?”
“Of course I do… It was my home, but I can’t go back now; I killed Loki, and I’m sure all of his other family members and more hardcore worshippers are gonna be after me.”
Sam reached up, brushing Gabriel’s hair out of his face, and the archangel leaned into the touch like a cat. “Maybe you can teach me about it all someday.”
“I can do that.”

Now Jason just has to try to make sure it doesn't make him completely lose it.

Everyone knows when you go back in time, you shouldn't step on an ant, just in case you accidentally kill your own grandparent or something. But what happens when you go back in time and, uh, accidentally interrupt the one event that apparently made the Grumpiest Alpha in Town into a ball of mindless manpain?
Well, if Marty McFly can do it, so can Stiles Stilinski. All he has to do is get Derek and Paige to fall in love before he gets pulled back to his own time. And before he makes anything worse. That's easy as pie, right? Right?

Twenty Books Challenge
Hypothetically, you are only able to keep 20 of your books. Only one book per author/series. So what books are you keeping? Credit due to @the-forest-library (I have been thinking about this list for like a week straight)
Guardians of the West by David and Leigh Eddings - any of the Belgariad/Mallorean series frankly. I read these series I don't know how many times as teen. Yes, they are a problematic. Yes they are trope-y as hell but I love them.
Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold - inching just barely above Miles in Love or Mountains of Mourning.
Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - This is a book that always makes me cry.
Whale Talk by Chris Cutcher - A swim team comprised of various kids with disabilities and are deeply flawed but are also attempting to do good things? I wish this was on every book list for teens.
All Systems Red (Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells - I mean all murderbot series is great. Funny story, I told my mom to read this book eons ago and she only read it after a librarian recommended it.
Return of the King by JRR Tolkien - though technically LotR is one book and I don't have single copies of this anymore. But the scouring of the shire just hits me in different places when I read it.
A Child's Anthology of Poetry edited by Elizabeth Hauge Sword and Victoria Flournoy McCarthy - My textbook of poetry when I was young.
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr - Another a book that makes me absolutely sob.
The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce - I love the Wild Magic Series the most of all Pierce's series. And yes, I recognize the problematic relationship. But also, talking badger.
Sabriel by Garth Nix - I'm sorry the far superior goth necromancer with bells.
First Truth by Dawn Cook - If had I pick one of the truth series. I have an unnatural fondness of a book series that combines magic with Punnett Squares.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Narrowly above Midsummer Night's Dream. But the tomorrow speech is an absolute banger.
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot - Any of the Herriot books. I read these almost to pieces.
Double Whammy by Carl Hiassen - It was this or Squeeze Me. But Skink really deserves to saved.
House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski - Post Modern Horror.
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein - More Poetry of my childhood.
Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson - specifically The Possibility of Evil.
Daredevil vol 6 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee - Graphic Novels count and I will fight you. This has one of the first individual issues I picked up.
Sandman vol. 8: World's End by Neil Gaiman, Micha Allred - Sandman holds a near and dear place in my heart. It was a close call between this and American Gods or Preludes and Nocturnes. But I will have echoes of Crements in my head.
Hawkeye vol. 4: Rio Bravo by Matt Fraction, David Aja - Pizza Dog! Also any of the volumes are fantastic and visually gorgeous.
I did take the prompt literally, but here are five more books I either always buy on kindle/can only get as an ebook. I would pay an extraordinary amount of money for these in print.
Toad Words and other stories by T Kingfisher - I was following her when she was still writing fantasy!
I Reap You Not by Catelyn Winona - Second Person done right.
True Porn Clerk Stories by Ali Davis - This causes me to giggle, rage, and cry.
The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan - Brothers Sinister series is the standard I compare all Regency Novels to.
Night Shift by Stephen King - Specifically Quitter's Inc. But frankly any collection of Stephen King is gold.
Tagging @thatoldstandby, @msfehrwight, @raventycho, @timemachineyeah, @theneptuneviolin and anyone else. And of course you can include pictures too.

I just finished reading the first two books in the Inkheart trilogy and really enjoyed it. But why did I enjoy Inkheart so much after I've been saying all year that I'm really over YA (inkheart isn't even YA its middle school reading?) novels? Let's explore.
I think the first thing is that the main characters vary in age. Its not a 'children saving the world' situation like Percy Jackson and we don't just have children as our POV. We have two teens as main characters, then mostly adults, and a few older people. It feels like we have a story that is compelling enough for adults but is told for children.
The next is that there is non of that crappy 2020s humour (maybe started 2010s?) that I keep seeing in books. I don't know how to articulate that silly, is it MCU?, type of humour where no negative feelings really feel? Serious moment that just feel cheapened by zingy one lines? That type of dialogue that feels like it's all Twitter banter? It's the kind of humour that's in every TikTok romance book you get you know? Does anyone else feel this?
I think that's why I also enjoyed Sabriel as well. They both predate this phenomenon.
Please tell me you know what I'm on about?

Read on AO3 here.
SAM WINCHESTER AWOKE to the feeling of what felt like every part of his body aching, especially his head and his ass. The first one wasn't a surprise - his and Dean's once-traditional pilgrimage to Vegas was a memory that surfaced through the throbbing in his skull without issue - but the second gave him pause since his memory cut out around the second tequila shot and he didn't remember meeting anyone he might've been keen to sleep with, much less a man. A man who was still in bed with him if the warmth against his side was any indication.
Please don't be Dean, Sam halfway prayed as he very carefully turned his head and tried to pry one eye open. He didn't think it would be since outside of one or two minor acts for a hunt here and there nothing like that had ever actually cropped up between them that Sam knew of, but then apparently there were teenaged girls on the internet writing stories based off their lives where they did so it wasn't like the possibility was completely null. Fortunately, when he got his eye open enough to peer over at his companion he was afforded an unobstructed view of a very well-sculpted, hairless, freckleless chest with absolutely no anti-possession tattoo. Not Dean, then. That didn't rule out it being someone he knew or even someone dangerous, but when he forced himself to focus through the pounding in his head he couldn't sense the sulfur skitter against his awareness that would have pinged a demon. He did get the strangest impression of petrichor and candyfloss and woodsmoke which felt vaguely familiar but not human familiar.
Angel, probably, Sam thought as he finally placed the petrichor association, and let his eye slip closed again. While his encounters with angels had been nearly as fraught up to that point as his encounters with demons, this angel had clearly only been interested in stabbing him with his less lethal sword if the ache in his ass was anything to go by. He might still smite Sam when he woke up, which raised other questions since angels didn't sleep, but for now Sam just couldn't be bothered to worry about it.
His bed partner, on the other hand, was predictably not as unconcerned by their predicament. Even with his head pounding and his face buried in a pillow, Sam knew the moment the angel woke, the bed rocking slightly as a startled and pained voice whisper-shouted, "What the literal Hell?!"
"Keep it down," Sam groaned into the pillow, then immediately wished he hadn't as his own voice set his head to pounding even worse. "Or smite me. Be kinder than the hangover."
There was a moment of silence and stillness as his companion registered his presence and his words. At length, the angel said slowly and, thankfully, more softly, "So you know I'm an angel."
"Mmhm," Sam hummed as quietly as he could. "Dunno which one... Don't remember meeting you las' night, but you're not trying to kill me...."
"Meet a lot of angels who try to kill you, do you?" the angel snarked. "Can't imagine why-- wait." Sam felt the bed shift and then there was a warm hand touching his bare shoulder, only to jerk back as if the angel had been burned. "Sam Winchester?!"
"Shhhh!" Sam hissed, dragging the pillow from under his face to cover his head. "Either heal me, smite me, or keep the volume down!"
"I can't heal a hangover," the angel snapped back with a slightly hysterical edge to his voice. "Otherwise I'd heal my own, and I don't think I should be making a habit of smiting my husband!"
....What.
Cautiously, Sam curled his left hand and felt around the base of his fingers with his thumb. Sure enough, there was a metal band around the base of his ring finger with a grooved texture hinting at engraving of some kind. Huh. So. He was drunk-married in Vegas to an as yet unknown angel in a male vessel and his sore ass apparently meant they'd had a very enthusiastic wedding night that he couldn't remember.
"Then lie back down or something," he managed to mumble into the mattress. "Had enough hangovers to know getting worked up won't help with the headache."
"What will, oh wise and venerable one?" came the quietly sarcastic rejoinder.
"Quiet," Sam repeated. The memory of the time Castiel had drunk a liquor store prodded at him through the pain, so he added, "Or drink some water to rehydrate your vessel. It'll help with the dry mouth, too."
Another lengthy silence, followed by a snap that was nearly as loud as a gunshot in the quiet room, and then the muffled sound of someone drinking water. After several seconds, during which Sam worked on breathing slowly and deeply to try and meditate his way through the pain in his head, the angel said in a more subdued voice, "You want any?"
Sam considered that question for a moment, then decided that yeah, drinking some water now could only help with the hangover. He carefully pulled the pillow off his head and propped himself up on one elbow, keeping his eyes shut tight against the light as he held out a hand. Cool glass pressed to his palm and he curled his fingers around it, briefly brushing against his new spouse's hand before the angel released the glass to him and he took a long, slow, careful sip.
"You are way too calm and trusting for this situation," the angel observed, sounding rather nonplussed.
"If you're not gonna smite me, you're probably not gonna poison me either," Sam pointed out with what he felt was perfectly sound reasoning for this hour and level of sobriety. He took another long, slow drink of water, then passed the glass back to his companion. "I might not remember who you are right now, and I did notice you haven't just told me--" Which, now that he thought about it, probably meant that the angel was worried that he would be upset to learn just who he had ended up with last night, which should probably be cause for concern but he just couldn't muster the energy to care. "--but the list of angels I would even consider sleeping with is very, very short, even without getting drunk-married first. And getting worked up won't help the hangover, so I'm deferring any freaking out until the sun's not so loud."
Another long silence, during which Sam opted to ease himself back down face first into the pillow, and then a very soft snort of amusement. "Touché, kiddo. That offer to lie back down still good?"
"Sure," Sam mumbled, rolling a little onto his side and lifting up one arm. "C'mere."
This time the weighted silence was more incredulous than assessing or thoughtful, but it only took a couple of seconds for the bed to shift and a warm body slotted into place against his chest under his upraised arm. He let the arm settle around his spouse, hand splayed over the middle of his bare back, and sighed softly as he felt some of the pain and tension begin to unknot from his muscles. It took a few more moments before the angel in his arms also relaxed, his vessel going loose and pliant as he settled against Sam's side and chest with his head tucked into Sam's neck.
"S'nice," the angel mumbled, his breath ghosting over Sam's bare chest as he spoke. "Gonna suck when you hate me again...."
"Not gonna happen," Sam mumbled back, ducking his head to brush a kiss across the top of the angel's head. "Prob'ly won't even be angry. Would'a gotten that part outta the way before we got married."
This time the pause felt more tentative, and Sam felt a slender-fingered hand cautiously slide up his chest to rest over his heart. "Don't go promising not to be angry," the angel cautioned. "We seem to have gotten very married, like 'bonded in the eyes of my Father, not even death do us part' married, no divorce or annulment optional."
Sam's head hurt too much to really think about all the implications of that just yet, but one thing did stand out to him. "And does that kind of bonding take if either person doesn't wholly mean it?"
"No, of course not," the angel answered promptly, then stilled. "Oh."
"Still think I'm gonna hate you?" Sam murmured, stroking the center of the angel's back with his thumb and feeling his spouse shiver minutely against him.
"Maybe," the angel muttered petulantly, putting the lie to his own words by curling closer against Sam's side. "Your brother certainly will."
"I'll protect you," Sam promised, kissing the angel's hair again. "'Sides, Dean has long since lost the right to try and dictate my relationships, no matter what he thinks."
Not that he expected Dean to be all that surprised by this newest and most permanent relationship. The already very short list of angels had just gotten a hell of a lot shorter, and he knew this wasn't Castiel since his long-time friend would have had no compunctions about identifying himself if he had ended up in an unfamiliar vessel that wasn't Jimmy Novak. He breathed in deeply, catching again that mingled scent of candyfloss and woodsmoke entwined with petrichor, and smiled.
"I'm glad you're alive," he murmured almost inaudibly into the soft hair against his lips. "Since I don't know if I said so last night. Prob'ly did, but it's worth saying again when I know you'll remember me saying it." He tapped one finger against the middle of his Archangel husband's back and added, "But if you ever fake your death again, you better damn well take me with you this time."
"Yes, dear," Gabriel snarked back, then sighed. "Now shut up and let that quiet you mentioned heal our hangovers, will ya?"
Sam's only response was to pull Gabriel closer and let himself relax back down away from the throbbing in his skull towards sleep. Gabriel was alive, in his arms, and married to him, which meant that his long-buried feelings for the renegade Archangel were not so unrequited as he had always believed nor as futile to hold onto as he had feared. Whatever else that meant, in general and for them specifically, could wait until later.
And maybe when he woke up they could try reenacting their wedding night.

queer (fantasy) recommendations
queer
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe ➡️ memoir told in graphic novel form, the author’s journey to identifying as non-binary and asexual. as a genderqueer asexual person, this book really resonated with me
I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston ➡️ YA novel about a girl who gets kissed by her rival at prom, who then disappears. it sucked me in and i read it in two days
Loveless by Alice Oseman ➡️ college girl discovers that she’s aroace as sapphic chaos explodes in the background. again, the aroace rep is really good
The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta ➡️ verse story about a mixed race, queer teen who finds a community in doing drag at his university. the coming out poem in the back made me cry when someone sent it to me without context
queer fantasy
Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir ➡️ lesbian necromancers in space, or: girl with a sword gets dragged into a set of bizarre challenges with her nemesis to become one of the saints to necromantic god. this gave me tsoa-level emotional damage but for different (and similar) reasons
Harrow The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir ➡️ the sequel to Gideon. even more batshit insane (/pos) than the first book, basically answering the question of “what happens if you have a really repressed, depressed lesbian and she has to work with some weird old people”. continued the standard set by Gideon and made me emotional
Cosmoknights by Hannah Templer ➡️ graphic novel about space gays who want to take down the patriarchy. I’ve only read the first volume (the second one is being released chapter by chapter online and I haven’t been vibing with that style lately) but it is GOOD
honorable mentions
Sabriel by Garth Nix ➡️ high fantasy about a girl going into the dangerous, magical Old Kingdom to saved her father from the realm of Death. some seriously inventive, well-written worldbuilding and definitely my favorite depiction of death/necromancy. remarkably progressive gender-wise considering it came out 25 years ago
Circe by Madeline Miller ➡️ story of Circe’s life. crosses paths with multiple big greek mythology figures and there are several tsoa references. MM seems to have taken more creative liberty with this one and some of it I’m not a fan of but overall a good book
i will probably have more to add to the queer fantasy section of this once I’ve read more of my tbr. please please read circe if you read and loved tsoa
if anyone has other recs feel free to share them!
