Anyway since I made the blog I figure I should tell you about MY turtle iteration.

It’s a little hard to explain bc it doesn’t have a theme like gumys superhero one but! I’ll do my best. (I call it the baroque verse)

They end up meeting Bishop, who in this au is not only a cyborg but a woman (#feminism) with a mysterious past. Bishop offers to help them overthrow earth, on the condition they promise to give her a share of land. But in truth, she’s actually manipulating them for her own insane means and will probably kill them once she has what she needs. What does she need? It’s a secret (I haven’t figured it out yet she is the newest character I’ve made)

So, she builds them a vast robot army. And this is where Splinter and Sherdder come in. (In this one, shredder is splinters DAD!!)

Basically, there was a war between the hamatos and their rival clan, the Foot, in Japan. The hamatos win, ofc but this feud ends up killing sakis wife. (splinters mother). So, saki leaves the hamato clan to his pupil and him and splinter run off to America. However, they end up getting caught up in all the Kraang business, and realize that they kinda don’t want the world to end, actually, so they start their own sort of father-son rebellion against the aliens. Yay, bonding! (They actually have a very healthy relationship)

One night, they hear that the Kraang are planning to experiment more with biological soldiers, and bishop has crafted a special serum (mutagen, what else). Splinter and his father mosey on over to hq to check it out and lo and behold! They’re experimenting on innocent baby turtles! Splinter and Saki that they have to save those baby turtles from what is sure to be their demise (god forbid women do anything) and decide to launch an ambush right then and there. A lot of shit happens. Mutagen vat explodes. Walls crumble and the building comes down. Splinter (a freshly mutated Ryukyu spiny rat) snatches the turtles (who somehow fell into a mutagen puddle that had a live electrical wire in it and lived?? We’ll get to that later) and Saki and Bishop disappear.

Splinter declares his father dead and drags the babies to the sewers to raise them as his own, because what else is he supposed to do? Turns out, surprise, each of the babies have unique super powers. Terrible twos? More like “asleep on your feet fur singed off depressed as hell what did I do to deserve this at least my oldest is somewhat behaved oh wait he’s deaf how am I supposed to accommodate him I don’t know fucking sign language and I can’t look it up I’m a rat I don’t have a goddamn cellphone Jesus Christ Leonardo stop electrocuting your brother” twos!!! hahah am I right!

Fast forward 15 years. The turtles birth order (oldest to youngest) goes Donnie, Leo, Mikey, Raph. Donnie is a spotted pond turtle, Leo is a River cooter, Mikey is a gulf coast box turtle, and Raph is an albino wood turtle. As stated before, Donnie is deaf and uses a modified mix of ASL (finger spelling) and BSL (for everything else) around his brothers, and AAC around his father and certain other people who don’t know his special Frankenstein sign language. All the turtles powers in order of birth order are Foresight (which, for extra angst points, give Donnie seizures if they’re super major visions!) Electricity powers, fire powers, and density manipulation.

Oh btw, remember how Saki was declared dead? HES ALIVE. He’s just been brainwashed by the Kraang for the last 15 years and now his only goal is to kill splinter and his turtle children! Also, in the first few years of his captivity, he was so depressed and lonely that Bishop made him a robot daughter and fitted her with ai for him to talk to and spar with. That robot is Karai, and she eventually gains sentience.

That’s it for now I think. Wasn’t expecting it to get that long lol. Oops

Might as well post this more comprehensible summary of everybody’s origins in my iteration(this was technically an infodump I made at a mutual, but it works)

I suppose I’ll start with the Kraang. I’m this one there’s only like. 4 of them. How Rare Island Bunnies Do a Parasitic Plant’s Bidding

The world’s only wild black-furred rabbit has a very important job — distributing seeds for a parasitic plant.

On the Amami Islands of Japan, wonder blooms from a nibble and some droppings.

In February 2020, an amateur naturalist named Yohei Tashiro was walking through the evergreen forests of the islands, situated about halfway between mainland Japan and Taiwan. On the ground, nestled against the roots of a tree, he noticed a cluster of strange, red globes — like strawberries crossed with red cap mushrooms. Even more interesting: Something clearly had been going to town on the ruby-red growths, the fruits of a weird little plant called Balanophora yuwanensis.

A plant oddity, B. yuwanensis does not perform photosynthesis, but rather leaches its energy from the roots of other plants. Technically, it’s a parasite.

While scientists had long figured that B. yuwanensis relied on the wind to spread its seeds, dense plants growing beneath the tree canopy cut down on how much air can blow through the forest. In addition, the plant’s seeds are tightly packed, dry and rather unappealing aside from their vibrant color.

“Yes, I tried it,” said Kenji Suetsugu, an ecologist at Kobe University in Japan, “but it was not sweet and not tasty.”

Birds have been known to eat the fruits, but only sparingly, leaving the scientists to wonder: Could the parasitic plant get around by advertising its seeds to an ancient, endangered and equally weird mammal instead?

Enter the nocturnal Pentalagus furnessi, or Amami rabbit, the world’s only dark-furred wild bunny. In a study published this week in the journal Ecology, Dr. Suetsugu and Hiromu Hashiwaki, a co-author also of Kobe University, posit an evolutionary bargain between Amami rabbits and B. yuwanensis. The root-sucking plants give food in exchange for seed dispersal services — something that has never been documented between a mammal and a parasitic plant.

The five-pound Amami rabbits are sometimes called “living fossils” because their ancestors have died out on mainland China. But on two small, volcanic islands known as Oshima Island and Tokunoshima Island, about 5,000 of the short-eared bunnies soldier on. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers the species endangered, a result of a combined habitat about 130 square miles, and the ever-present threat of annihilation by nonnative predators on the islands, including mongooses, cats and dogs as well as logging operations by humans.

Amami rabbits hold cultural significance to the people who live on these islands and they are a flagship species for conservation and tourism. But not a lot is known about them, Dr. Suetsugu said.

Acting on a hunch that it was the rabbits gnawing the fruits to their nubs, the scientists trained three infrared camera traps on B. yuwanensis fruit bundles in January 2021. By March, they had an answer.

During the day, pale thrushes and Ryukyu robins visited the bright red fruits, but the birds tended to consume only a little bit of fruit at a time. Invasive rats also infrequently dined on the fruits. But when night fell, the Amami rabbits feasted, sometimes gobbling up a whole, golf-ball-sized globe in a single sitting. Combining the frequency of visits and the amount of fruit consumed, the scientists concluded that the rabbits were the main creatures feeding on the parasitic plants.

To further investigate their hypothesis, the scientists then set out to find Amami rabbit feces in the wild. Examining five pellets — the small sample size a result of the rarity of the species — they confirmed that each one contained at least one viable B. yuwanensis seed. Using a combination of the wild rabbit droppings and Amami rabbits housed at the Kagoshima Hirakawa Zoo, the scientists found that nearly 55 percent of the B. yuwanensis seeds to pass through the animals’ digestive tracts were still viable. Compared with similar studies of the European rabbit, which show an average of just 5 percent viability with 19 other plant species, it would seem the Amami rabbits have greater success planting new seeds.

Most importantly, it’s possible that these bunnies are much more effective parasitic-plant seed dispersers than birds, because of their natural behavior of digging burrows at the base of large trees, where B. yuwanensis requires a host plant’s roots to survive. In other words, the rabbits’ dropping patterns are less random, in the evolutionary eyes of the parasites.

While Amami rabbits and Balanophora plants may not be household names, the study reveals yet another complex relationship that has evolved through the ages, said Dr. Suetsugu. It also hints at the greater toll incurred when we drive species to extinction.

He added: “The loss of the Amami rabbit could also have a ripple effect on the entire ecosystem.”

All the more reason to study the Amamis before they’re gone.

Hi, I think tumblr ate my ask? I'd love to know if you could talk more about snakes native to Korea and Japan, or even East Asia in general!

Hello hello - I certainly can! East Asia has a very wide diversity of snake species, but you'll mostly find vipers and colubrids, especially in and around Japan. Japan has a lot of snakes (47 species) and there are also quite a few in Korea (16 species), so I'll talk about the ones I think are most interesting!

A few Japanese (and neighboring islands) snakes:

Japanese odd-toothed snakes (genus Lycodon) are found throughout Japan! These funky little snakes are so named because they have these huge teeth, used for hunting amphibians and reptiles and holding onto slippery prey. They're one of the few Japanese snakes who can eat venomous pit vipers!

Iwasaki's snail-eaters are found mostly in the Ryukyu islands and are just adorable. They're specialized to eat snails and have asymmetrical jaws to help them work snails out of their shells! This adaptation means they're not great at eating anything but snails.

Japanese forest rat snakes live all across Japan in wooded areas, and they are amazing to look at! They're synonymous with reptile life in Japanese forests.

The hime habu is a pit viper native to Okinawa, and it's the biggest snake on the Japanese archipelago, reaching a maximum of 9 feet long, though it's usually closer to 6.

One of my personal favorites, the Japanese odd-scaled snake! These little snakes are beautiful to look at. Members of the Xernodermidae family (relatives to dragonsnakes), they're thought to be primitive relatives to colubrids, and they have an odd scale pattern that makes them look incredibly unique.

A few neat snakes from the Korean peninsula:

The most beautiful ratsnake in the world, the aptly-named beauty rat snake! These fellows are found throughout east Asia, but in the Korean peninsula they're only found in North Korea. Beauty rat snakes are one of my personal dream snakes.

Mamushi (vipers in the genus Gloydius) are the venomous snakes in both the Japanese archepelago and the Korean peninsula. They're highly venomous (though fortunately rarely lethal without treatment) and found throughout the Korean peninsula (and throughout Japan and neighboring islands).

Red-necked keelbacks are notable for being one of the only known snakes that's both venomous and poisonous! They're rear-fanged venomous (and, unusually for colubrids, their venom is medically significant) but their diet of poisonous amphibians is also thought to make them poisonous to eat!

Red-banded wolfsnakes are common throughout Korea, and aside from being beautiful, they're known for a habit of rolling into a ball when threatened.

Dabi x Shigaraki One-Shot

Warnings: So ooc, bugs, slight gore if you squint really hard, swearing, rOmAnCe, fEeLs, omg cliché

Shigaraki strolled into the League of Villains’ bar, wiping the blood off his hands with a discarded, musty towel. His gaze swept over those present in the room, hidden by the obstructing hand on his face. Toga was sitting at one end of the bar with Spinner, giggling obnoxiously at his dramatic hero imitations. Twice perched on a barstool at the opposite end of the bar, staring sullenly into the distance while puffing leisurely on a cigarette. Meanwhile, Kurogiri stood behind the counter, polishing glasses in a dutiful, restless manner, while Dabi lounged on an old moth eaten couch. Across from him, Compress made a move on the chessboard the two shared.

All of them eyed Shigaraki as he stepped further into the room, clearing his throat to get their attention. The effect was immediate. Toga and Spinner fell silent, Twice came out of his trance, and Dabi’s posture straightened slightly.

“News, Tomura?” Mr. Compress questioned. Shigaraki’s head turned in his general direction and gave an almost imperceptible nod.

“Different factions of the yakuza are still at war, competing for control now that they’ve removed Overhaul. One of the factions was delivering me a shipment of illegal drugs…I was expecting to use it to create more of those quirk destroying bullets, but it was intercepted by Ryukyu, Selkie and a few U.A. brats,” he reported in a bitter tone. He clearly wasn’t happy about how events had transpired.

“And all that blood on your hands, you slip and fall into Kool-Aid, boss?” Dabi snickered. Shigaraki turned to him and flexed his fingers, the unspoken threat apparent.

“How would you like to find out?” Tomura intoned quietly. Dabi scoffed, unfazed by the hostility.

“Well, you know, if you weren’t an insufferable dick and gave us straight answers…” he shrugged maladroitly. An unsteady and tense silence had fallen over the room, and everyone present was waiting to spring into action, should the need arise. Kurogiri inched closer, recalling the volatility present in the two’s previous encounters. Shigaraki and Dabi were continuing to stare at each other, Tomura’s demeanor calm and collected, Dabi’s wary yet relaxed. As they eyed each other quietly, Dabi realized Shigaraki was balancing all his weight on one leg and holding-no, more like nursing- his right arm. His gloves were absent. Tomura detected his examination and shot Dabi a nasty glare as their eyes met, daring him to say something. Kurogiri observed this interaction and decided it was time to step in, before things went any further.

“Tomura, where did all the blood come from?” he inquired, making sure to keep his tone level and to keep from sounding interrogating so as not to anger Tomura further. Shigaraki tore his gaze away from Dabi, muttering a response.

“One of the yakuza factions at war with the one I employed recognized me. Overhaul followers…one had a paralyzing quirk,” he seethed. It had hurt his pride immensely to have been surprised so easily, pinned so effortlessly, paralyzing quirk or no, and having that scarred idiot examining him only pissed him off worse. Kurogiri’s mist blew slightly, a draft from the open door causing him to dissipate and then reform as he spoke again.

“I see,” he soothed, “why don’t you go lie down, I’ll prepare you some food.”

Tomura nodded, looking rather beaten. He began to shuffle off to his room, Spinner and Twice both averting their gaze out of respect to their boss. Dabi sat thoughtfully on the couch, sweeping a hand through his hair as he rendered Compress checkmate.

A few hours later, Dabi was sauntering to his room in the evening, but as he passed Tomura’s room he heard muffled cursing. He turned around and rapped the door. The sounds quieted, and Tomura muttered gruffly for him to enter. Dabi obeyed, leaning against the doorframe.

“You okay in here?” he interrogated, already knowing the answer. Tomura was in bad shape. His food sat untouched, his laptop shut on the desk, no online gaming visible. He was sprawled on his bed, sweatshirt hood up, panting slightly.

“I’m fine,” he snapped, his face obscured by his hair in the dark of the room.

“Cut the bullshit handyman, what’s got you sitting on tacks?” Dabi shot back. Tomura huffed.

“Why the fuck would you care? Get out,” he barked. Dabi scoffed.

“No wonder no one wants to be around you. You’re so kind,” he murmured sarcastically, turning to leave. He was halfway to the door when Tomura spoke again.

“The attack….there were three people. One paralyzed me, another rendering me mute, I’m assuming those were their quirks…”

Dabi raised an eyebrow. “The third?” he questioned.

“The third…didn’t move until the other two started leaving…as they walked away, he threw something at me….I flinched, so I didn’t see what it was but I felt it hit me…like…worms eating into my brain. I didn’t think anything of it, because there were no unusual effects but now I…”

He trailed off, glancing at his food before quickly turning his gaze elsewhere once more. “When I try to eat the food is all…full of maggots, and mold. When I try to patch up my injuries from the encounter, all I see is…blood. So much blood…gushing, squirting, blood. Bugs. Lots of…”

He shuddered. “In the mirror…my nails turn to beetles and crawl away…my eyebrows, spiders…worms for-for lips. My gloves…they’re rats…”

His voice broke slightly, and he stopped speaking. Dabi sighed, observing him quietly. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that Shigaraki was trembling, his knees pulled up to his chest. He was scared. The kind of fear that you know is irrational, but it’s bone-chilling anyway. He knew that fear, he felt it roll through his body, consuming his thoughts every time he heard his father’s footsteps near his bedroom door when he was a small child. Something inside him tugged at his consciousness, telling him to comfort the man in front of him. He gave into it, strolling over to Shigaraki and perching hesitantly next to him on the corner of the bed. He clenched his fist, opening it to reveal a small, flickering blue flame.

“Focus on it,” he suggested quietly, softly nudging Shigaraki with his shoulder. Shigaraki turned his head, hyper fixating on the fire, anxious for his mind to be anywhere but on the events of the day and their effects. After a while, he sighed softly.

“Thank you, Dabi,” he murmured, looking up at the raven-haired male. His shivering had eased, and he felt slightly calmer. Dabi noticed the hand wasn’t on his face, as usual, and was surprised by how red Shigaraki’s eyes were. He’d been crying, for a long while. Dabi nodded.

“Anything for you, boss man,” he replied truthfully. He may act abrasive towards Shigaraki, but there was a fondness for him, somewhere deep inside. Shigaraki had accepted him, however slowly, and had given him a place to stay, a family, somewhere he belonged. Maybe that platonic feeling of respect and devotion had turned into something else…something more serious. Seized by a sudden inexplicable urge, he tucked a small portion of Shigaraki’s hair behind his ear. The smaller male turned to him, a soft vulnerable in his eyes that Dabi had never seen before. It made Shigaraki seem…almost fragile. Dabi slid his thumb over a scar on the man’s cheek, frowning slightly. Two imperfect beings, two scarred, broken creatures, adapted to the circumstances of the cruelty they were subject to…so perfect. Almost poetic, how they were frozen together in anarchy, yet the world kept spinning on its axis around them. And they were safe. Safe from it all, because, all though unspoken, now, they had each other.

He never thought Shigaraki would be so soft, so fragile, so carefully built. He wanted to accept Shigaraki as a part of him, to take him in, take his bones, his flesh, his mind and make the two of them one. To protect him through anything and everything, always. He’d break himself to keep Shigaraki intact, he’d never let the world touch him again. When his thought process broke, he looked up, only to find Shigaraki’s face mere inches from his own. The blue haired male exhaled slightly through his lips and Dabi could feel it on his own. Unconsciously, his tongue darted out to wet them.

“Why are you such an ass to me?” Shigaraki questioned bluntly. The flame in Dabi’s palm flickered once, twice, and blew itself out.

“I’m…afraid of what I feel.” The hand that had been holding the flame came to rest on his upper thigh.

“What do you feel?” Shigaraki asked, a note of gentle yet earnest curiosity in his voice. Dabi licked his lips once more, swallowing heavily. Shigaraki seemed much too close…

“Tell me,” he whispered when Dabi failed to answer. Dabi hesitated, visibly struggling before leaning in to capture Tomura’s lips in a gentle, tender kiss. Shigaraki gasped softly, but didn’t pull away, instead lifting his hand to hold the back of Dabi’s neck, pulling him closer. Finally. Finally, they both thought. Shigaraki’s hand came up to brush the stubble on Dabi’s jaw gently, and they were no longer aware of the passage of time. The stars whirled, the sun rose and set, a million years passed, and it made no difference. Their souls merged, never to be torn apart. They pulled away as one, exhaled as one. Their gazes caught each other, holding each other in a silent embrace, one that said everything…and nothing. They never left that place, that space of eternal bliss, where for once, everything was right.

Hero names I would change and want your thoughts on: Induplicate for Neito, Mega Empress for Itsuka, Poltergeist for Reiko, Sasquatch for Jurota, Twofold for Nirengeki, Longlin for Hiryu, Airhead for Kosei, Shroom for Kinoko, Satyr for Pony, Silver Strife for Tetsutetsu, Growthspurt for Yui, Overgrowth for Ibara (or mayhe Eden), Punchline for Emi, Lab Rat for Nezu, Oracle for Mirai, K-9 for Ryo, Cool Ghost for Mirio (Lemillion sounds so banal), Energizer for Nejire, and Foodsimile for Tamaki.

Been trying to think of better hero names. For Enji, maybe Hellflame? For Ryukyu, maybe Dragoon. For Shinji, I think Root Lord. Gran could be Master Jet. For Tsunagu, i thought of Denim. For Danjuro, I think Sir Rebound. Shishido could be Lionizer. Selkie should go by Sea Lion. Kurogiri could be Shroud Cloud. Spinner could be Ninja Lizard. Kai could be Matter Master. For Mustard, maybe Gasmaster or Toxin. And for Nana, Float Girl is all I got.

Thought of some (possibly) better hero names, so here goes. For Yo, Shakedown. For Dabi, Froze-Inferno (like frozen and inferno). For Himiko, Carmilla (like the vampire). For Tomura, Oblivion. For Mirko, Luna Rabbit. For Camie, Mirage. And for Tsu, Frogger.

Quirk uograde ideas for Natsuo, Fuyumi, and Dabi: Dabi being able to use black ice, but overuse gives him frostbite. Fuyumi using a mix of ice and fire, similar to a comet. And Natsuo using healing flames (like cauterizing wounds) and healing frost (like ice packs). Hero names would be Froze-Inferno (yes, I'm the same guy as earlier), Comet, and maybe Celsius for Natsuo.

What would Mei's hero name be? I thought of Mechanica, but that sounds kinda basic.

No, I don't like any of these or the last names you suggested. These honestly seem like the knockoff names you find on legally distinct toys. Some of them are okay, but most are either generic, aren't any better then the original, or just clunky. Hero names are supposed to represent the hero in some way. They need to be distinct, marketable, and tie back into the character. The most stand examples are the names of Mirio and Enji. Lemillion, a representation of Mirio's desire save as many people as he can, is banal and should be replaced with "Cool Ghost". Endeavor, a reminder of his impossible task to ever match All Might that is a key point in his character, should just be replaced with his Quirk name.
