Woodpigeon Wednesday! Overstimulated pigeon because I've been in a bit of an autism funk lately (although today's been much better.) Not much detail because I want more time to relax (and have more time to draw the silly guy)

Strutting in as our next bird; the Nicobar pigeon.
Tumblr media
The nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is a pretty good sized pigeon from India! The bird, while known for its fantastic, beaming rainbow iridescent feathers is also known for being the closest living relative of the dodo (yes, the dodo was a pigeon!) and also near threatened. It is also the only living member in its genus. Amazing!

Suspiciously shaped pigeons:
Tumblr media
[ID: Three white Brunner Pouters, a breed of fancy pigeon, with one hidden behind with only a leg visible, and another partly visible at the right edge.
They have huge, round crops (an expandable pouch at the throat, for storing food before it enters the stomach), and smooth slender bodies with featherless, vivid red lower legs and feet. They look simultaneously elegant and comical. END ID.]
Thank you to @sleebyshiba for the ID!!

February 1, 2024 - White-crowned Pigeon (Patagioenas leucocephala) These pigeons are found in much of the Caribbean, extreme southern Florida in the United States, and along parts of the Caribbean coasts of Mexico and Central America. They mostly eat fruit from trees and shrubs, as well as some insects, small snails, seeds, and flowers. Usually roosting and nesting in mangroves, they may fly over 30 miles in the mornings, often over water, to reach their foraging habitats. Breeding in colonies of as many as 500 pairs, they build messy platform nests from small twigs in trees. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks with crop milk. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due mostly to habitat degradation and hunting.

Mentioned in our introductory post, the Common Bronzewing!
Tumblr media
The common bronzewing, (Phaps chalcoptera) native to Australia, is a very interesting bird, with spectacular iridescence on the wings. Like all pigeons, they're round and build absolutely terrible nests. Interestingly, the females do not lose their iridescent wings in any way, with barely any differences in sexual dimorphism, really.
