Another pigeon, but domesticated and stunning, the archangel pigeon!
Tumblr media
The archangel pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is a breed of domesticated pigeon in the "fancy" category, and one of the ones that are actually morally okay. Their plumage is striking: Black wings with green iridescence, and brown plumage pretty much everywhere else, with signature iridescence on the crop/neck which is pink colored! (However, it may vary. This is just the most popular variant, we believe) All domesticated pigeons, and fancy breeds for that matter all come from the very not domesticated bird, the rock dove, and eventually, the domesticated pigeons from older times became feral pigeons.

Its 2024!!! Happy new year, or happy new year's eve depending on where in the world you are.
And a great time to begin a new art challenge. I have a list of extinct birds for january, starting (ofc) with the passenger pigeon. These are such a great representative species for extinct birds imo - they used to be one of the most numerous birds on Earth, numbering in the billions, yet they vanished within a century. So gorgeous too!
As a communally roosting bird, their sheer numbers used to snap even large branches and they often piled on top of each other to roost. And then. Poof. None left.

[ID: an illustration of a tan and peach colored mourning dove perched on a branch, facing to the right. The background is speckled light blue. End.]
Coo-WOOoo-oo-oo-oo! These are one of my favorite birds to talk back to bc I can do a pretty decent mourning dove impression. :-) They make those mournful calls by keeping their beaks closed and puffing their throats out. They also have a special “wing whistle” noise made in flight by the movements of their wings, which helps alert their flock mates to potential danger when they take off.

Strutting in as our next bird; the Nicobar pigeon.
Tumblr media
The nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is a pretty good sized pigeon from India! The bird, while known for its fantastic, beaming rainbow iridescent feathers is also known for being the closest living relative of the dodo (yes, the dodo was a pigeon!) and also near threatened. It is also the only living member in its genus. Amazing!

Day 14 of January extinct birds - the Mauritius blue pigeon
I think the blue pigeons are one of those groups that shows how the diversity and weirdness of pigeons isn't appreciated enough! In French, they're called 'pigeon hollandais' due to their colours resembling the Dutch flag. This blue pigeon lived on the island of Mauritius along with the dodo and more than a hundred species of now extinct plants and animals.
