Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

mfw I realized abed genuinely thinks he’s never been messed with before troy messes with him in 1x05, even though anyone who can remotely relate to abed socially can confidently say that there’s No Way he’s never been messed with before, and he probably just never realized it was happening (because god knows that shit has happened to me and probably many of you before) and troy was the only one to ever clarify that he was just messing around, because while everyone before was doing it to get a cheap laugh, troy was doing it as a genuine attempt to show that he values their friendship, because in his experience that’s how friendships are forged and that is an acceptable way to bond with someone, but abed never had that experience, and their whole arc in that episode is a product of their vastly different grade school experiences and it makes for major miscommunications in how their friendship should be from here on out and and and and

I wish more people realized that ADHD avoidance/executive dysfunction/procrastination/etc. includes struggling to do things you want to do. For example, I've been wanting to open my laptop to play a video game for days now, but I have to bring my laptop with me for work every day so it's in my bag and I made a mess of my desk a few days ago and that extra sixty seconds of prep it would take to get the game going has prevented me from doing this thing that I really want to do. If it takes me a week to get myself to do something I enjoy, it's exponentially harder to get myself to do something that I don't want to do. But from an outside perspective, people don't get that the avoidance applies to everything. Their frame of reference for "I struggle to do 'x' unpleasant task" is that everyone hates to do 'x' unpleasant task, so what makes me with my ADHD any different?

I'm not necessarily blaming others for their lack of understanding, or trying to create excuses for myself, and tbh I'm really not sure if I'm making any sense at all. But just. It sucks that ADHD makes literally everything so damn difficult.
