“The chorus hits. Diego throws his head back, putting as much rasp into his singing as possible and that’s it. I can’t let him suffer alone. This is *our song.*” - RIGHT WHERE I LEFT YOU, by Julian Winters
I have long been a fan of Julian Winters’ work and have been so undecided about which scene to tackle first of the MANY scenes he’s written that I adore. But when I picked up this book and got to this moment between Isaac Martin and his best “friend” Diego Santoyo, the decision was made. This book is so joyful and wholesome, and more people need to read it, not the least because more Afro-Latine boys deserve their HEA and Julian is actively out here writing that world into being.
PS: I make no apologies about putting MANU’s poster on the wall. Diego is a queer Puerto Rican and my headcanon says he’d dig Manu’s story. Look close for the other Easter Eggs! ;)

Reading update:
Tumblr media
YA graphic novel about werewolves. I was kind of meh on it. The artists switched off each chapter and I preferred the style of one of the a lot more.
Tumblr media
Military fake dating romance. I like Annabeth Albert a lot so I enjoyed this, though it’s not my favorite thing I’ve read of hers. I was rooting for the two dumbasses to just admit they love each other. My major problem with this one was that I didn’t feel the barrier to them being together was...a thing. Like, once they realized they both had feelings for each other, which they did basically immediately, there was no reason for them to not just...get together for real.
I have the sequel to this one in my TBR pile as well, but it focuses on a character I found extremely annoying in this one. Then again I also didn’t like the side characters in Conventionally Yours, but I ended up enjoying Out of Character more.
Tumblr media
I really wanted to like this one, and it was fine. But I didn’t love it? Maybe I just don’t really care for the rich businessman trope. Or the grumpy/sunshine trope? I also have the second book in this series in my TBR pile so we’ll see if I like that one better.
Tumblr media
I was also pretty meh on this. idk? I liked the main character but I didn’t really care about the love interest. And it kind of felt like they only got together because the MC got his heart broken by the guy he spent most of the book pining for.
Tumblr media
I loved this one! I love KJ Charles, and I seem to be a sucker for post WWI and post WWII mlm romances. Also I loved the fact that the love interest is shady and double-crossing but genuinely cares about the MC. *chef’s kiss* I had to order the other two in the series after I finished this one.
Tumblr media
It’s weird to read basically all queer books and then to read a book that...isn’t queer. I picked this one up because it’s sci-fi, set in Minnesota, and by a Minnesotan author. It was pretty good, and I think the first in a series? It’s about how a small town in the Boundary Waters experiences a huge boom because meteorites containing this crazy metal hit there. Features Superpowers From Space (Stan Lee is thanked in the acknowledgements), an idealistic woman cop, and military experimentation.
Tumblr media
Very good book that’s inspired by the HH Holmes murders during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair (The Devil in the White City is a nonfiction book about the subject, if you’re familiar with that). The story centers on a Jewish teen who more or less gets possessed by the spirit of the young man he loves, who is murdered by a serial killer who appears to be targeting young Jewish men. I love World’s Fair settings, and I haven’t read many books with a Jewish cast of characters, particularly not queer Jewish characters, so that was very cool. I recommend this one.
Tumblr media
This has been sitting in my TBR pile for like 5 years, and I finally read it. It was a WWII book? idk. I know people love it but it was a solid 3 stars for me. Easy read, though, so despite its length, I got through it fast.
And currently reading:
Tumblr media
Why have my last three reads had red covers? I didn’t do that on purpose. Anyway I’m almost halfway through this one and it’s good...but idk if I’ll continue with the series because I read a review that mentioned the endgame romance is a polyship, and I find polyships very squicky (no shade if you like them, they’re just not for me). The world is interesting and I like the main character, and the character who presumably will be his love interest down the line. I’ll have to see how I feel once I finish it.

If I had a coin for every Middle grade book about queer characters and birds that I absolutely adored I had two coins. Which is actually a lot considering these specific themes! Why do they exist? Why are they good? (Can I please get more?) First Every Bird a Prince, now The Language of Seabirds. ♥ It’s so tender and beautiful and even among the drama, because it’s Middle grade, you can always be sure things will turn out well in the end ... /3
I also tremendously enjoyed Milo and Marcos at the End of the World. The writing, the story, right up my alley. One of the things I liked was how it portrayed religion vs. atheism without making one sound worse than the other. Next was Out of the Blue. I'm not really into picking favourite characters, but I loved Crest so much. I lent the book to my friend to read at the airport while we were on a short trip and she was like "This character is kinda annoying". Obviously, she is wrong, because they are The Best.
Unlike (probably an unpopular opinion) Julian from Cemetery Boys. To my own disappointment I did not like the book as much as I would have wanted. Julian is just too intense for my taste. Also, two days? Two days? Is it even possible to have a burning "I love you forever" kind of romance after just two days? This might just be my aroace insides speaking but I so didn't get it. I mean, he was a ghost, so no real body, no pheromones or whatever, just appearance and questionable personality. I could not imagine. I also don't see why they could not just have been friends. You can risk your life for your friends as well, you know. (The culture, magic and Maritza were pretty good though.) But I guess, it's the same reason why the boys in Right Where I Left You could not just stay friends. Like, I get it, you want to show that it's possible and give hope to kids in minorities or difficult sitiations, buuuut (deep sigh). I just don't like sayings like "see, I told you it had to happen sooner or later" just because a friendship is closer or more physical than what you're used to. It makes it sound like friendship isn't enough. For many people it isn't, yeah, but as a concept itself, it is. There no inherent need to take it further. I feel like I'm starting to sound like Téa/Anzu from Yugi-Oh with her friendship speeches, but I can't help it. D:
(Is it weird to read romance books and then whine because there was romance? Maybe. But it’s not like there’s a Platonic Relationships category in the bookstore ... Also with the right books I like reading about it, even though every so often I find myself being puzzled about the simple question “But how does is work?!” The more intense the characters get about it, usually the less I understand. I don’t think I’ll ever find the answer but maybe I can pick up some pieces of the puzzle.)
The final book this month was The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza. I picked this up because I felt like revelling in my misery for a minute and previous SD Hutchinson end-of-the-world-books provided in that direction. Surprisingly Elena was much tougher than her male counterparts, which is a good thing really, because I loathe reading whiny heroines. It wasn't my favourite of the trio, but I appreciate its existence nonetheless. These books don't have an adventure or a big love story to tell, instead they just have ideas and thoughts all squished into a weird shape. And it's nice.
