Descent into Avernus and Why You Should Read It.
Tumblr media
(Or, like, at least skim!)
Descent into Avernus is the D&D 5E module describing the events that took place just before the timeline of Baldur's Gate 3 picks up — including more information and context for the ordeals undergone by the tiefling refugees.
The module is described as "complimentary [sic.] to the story of Baldur's Gate III", and the studio itself made a point to note that they "worked with Adam Lee, one of the lead writers of Descent Into Avernus, when crafting the story of Baldur's Gate III."¹
The section I would most strongly recommend taking a look at concerns the city and citizens of Baldur's Gate itself, the "Baldur's Gate Gazetteer", spanning from pages 158 to 215.
Included here are things like:
A stat block and bio for Nine-Fingers Keene (although, sadly, nothing on just what she has going on with Jaheira–).
Further information on Dukes Ravengard and Stelmane.
A full map of the city, and subsequent sections giving details of each region.
A section on Ramazith's Tower, and its current master, Lorroakan.
Details on a variety of named and well-described businesses.
Further clarifying information on exactly what is going on with Wyll's new horns.
I'll work on making some individual posts in the coming days delving into these aspects and more, but if you'd rather not wait around for that for all your worldbuilding and storytelling needs, go forth with my blessing, and this handy guide² to an accessible copy:
[Keyword Search Terms: "Descent Into Avernus" + "Anyflip"]

¹ Christian Hoffer. "Dungeons & Dragons Clarifies Relationship Between Descent Into Avernus and Baldur's Gate III". June 2019. comicbook.com.
² I tried to include the link with the original attempt at this post, but the Tumblr tag index did not like that. I hope this alternative suffices.

the other thing i'm not ready to confidently assert but have been considering is just the idea that...
first, and this i am confident about, i think every person should genuinely sit down w themselves and ask, "am i happy with the gender i was assigned at birth? do i have a gender thing going on? do i want to do something about it?"
bc like. even with increased trans acceptance in some spaces, transness is assumed to be an outlier, when i think a lot of people would benefit from gender exploration even if they come out of it still identifying as cis. it's relatively low risk and high reward to open yourself up to the idea of Having Some Shit Going On.
in the same way, i'm starting to think everyone should have to have the "am i guys?" conversation, because i really think a lot of people will never find out otherwise, and their lives will always be a little worse for it. if you don't have guys, the act of asking won't kill you.
the caveat in both of these is that encouraging this questioning is a delicate task.
we don't need more people obsessive-compulsively attempting to categorize and pigeonhole their behavior rather than mindfully observing it. we don't need more people asserting they know others better than they know themselves. we don't need more uninformed people speaking the loudest about topics they're only just learning about. basically, we don't need more "egg cracking" discourse (god help me).
inspiring this kind of reflection would require a lot of thoughtful and effective communication and legwork, but i do think maybe it's something to strive for. idk. just musing.

Curious: what are your favorite type of fairy stories listed in the Aarne-Thompson enciclopedia classification?
First off, it's nice to meet you and thank you for asking! Secondly, I want to preface this: I'm not a student or a scholar of folklore as a genre, and my knowledge of ATU is limited to what I've managed to find online over the years. More often than not, it's either something I've found on JStor in college, something in a Maria Tatar book, or this website.
Still, I love seeing these stories and all their variations across times and places. Without further ado:
306: The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes: I love the mystery element of this story, and I'm forever intrigued by all the variations of the other world the women travel to, whether it's the palace of Indra, the court of Satan, or something else entirely. Many versions attribute their actions to some curse that must be broken to achieve a heterosexual happy ending, but it's in the in-between that this story really sings to me. And a not-quite-variant of it, "Kate Crackernuts", may just be my favorite fairy tale of all time; how often is the ugly (or at least, "less bonny") stepsister the hero of her own story?
310: The Maiden in the Tower: I'm a sucker for a magical chase, and Rapunzel's relatives absolutely provide. My favorites include "Snow-White-Fire-Red", "The Canary Prince", and "Louliyya, Daughter of Morgan".
311: Magic Flight: Stories of magical escapes from dire situations, like "Sweetheart Roland", "The White Dove", "The Fox Sister", and "The Tail of the Princess Elephant".
407: The Flower Girl: Plants who become women or vice versa, often coupled with an escape from an abusive romance. I love these stories purely for the folkloric weirdness factor: "A Riddling Tale" (shout-out to Erstwhile for introducing me to this one), "The Gold-Spinners", "The Girl in the Bay Tree", and "Pretty Maid Ibronka".
451: Brothers as Birds: This one's purely on my love for the Grimms' "Six Swans" and "Seven Ravens". I love a resilient heroine who draws her strength from her family. I admittedly haven't read many others, but these two mean so much to me they get a place here entirely on the strength of these two.
510B: All-Kinds-Of-Fur: The story of a woman's escape from her incestuous father who then gets a Cinderella ending. I admire the heroine's courage in face of an all too real type of monster. Grimms' is a favorite, as is "Florinda" (which could also qualify as 514), "Princess in a Leather Burqa", "The She-Bear", and "Nya-Nya Bulembu".
514: The Shift of Sex: I first came across this story when I stumbled on Psyche Z. Ready's terrific thesis some years ago and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. All of these variations from all over the world -- I find it cathartic to know that we've been asking these questions about gender and sexuality forever, and a happy ending is an imaginative possibility.
709: Fairest of Them All: This I owe squarely to Maria Tatar's anthology from a few years ago. Unfortunately, this also means that there are several I can't find online, including "Kohava the Wonder Child" (a rare Jewish heroine in a genre infamous for how it absorbs anti-Semitism) and "King Peacock" (one of the few African American fairy tales I know, also included in Tatar's collaboration with Henry Louis Gates). I love "Princess Aubergine", "Little Toute-Belle", and especially "Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree" - my little bi self was elated to stumble across a princess who lives happily ever after with her kind and gentle limbo husband and her cunning and resourceful wife.
Even as a hobbyist, I love folklore and fairy tales. I love these little glimpses into other cultures, and I love the way these story structures act as magnets for so many nuances of people's lives across history. Still, I hope this answers your question, gives a glimpse into my experience with fairy tales as a genre, or (at the very least) gives you some new and interesting stories to read!

The appropriate attire, down to the details (Patreon)
#Doodles#Original#Solitaire#Still thinking along these lines lol#I was hit with the Excellent idea of turning the kind of unstructured single-finger gloves that I sometimes put on ♦ and ♣ into a full set#One finger apiece! Although it is maybe a bit funny-reverse looking with how I normally arrange them lol#If you just look at their right palms or left from the back it's in reverse! Whoops! Lol it's meant to be more by priority of the finger#Index is most commonly used etc. etc. and so on lol#I think each of them getting their own general design (Adel and Noirceur the most similar since they're inverses also hehe) is nice :)#And Stellat's looking like a ring to represent jewelry ♪ It's nice!#Also shows a bit of a difference in their hand sizes and....quality?? I don't know what word it would be lol#Like Adel's vs. Noirceur's again - ♥'s hands are large but generally unmarred - a few callouses and probably a scar or two#Noirceur's are also large but a bit more lean and his knuckles and the pads of his fingers are deeply calloused#And the outsides of his knuckles are usually rough#Both because he can't afford for them to be as pretty - he doesn't have as many resources to spend on attendants to keep them soft#Nakamura's are slender and soft and Stellat's are probably the softest of all of them haha ♪#He has some meat to his fingers and they're kept well-hydrated and clean so he's the prettiest hand model#He also has the smallest hands tho so it exaggerates how chubby they look haha#Of all the kings he'd definitely be the one to wear nail polish lol#Fun ♪

As the world's most random note about tagging, because I think of this every time I tag a post with an updated tag, I... "update" my tags
Meaning that over time as my moods and blog topics and interests and dialect and mutuals and inspirations all change, I'll go from using one standard tag to a another for that same exact content.
And I don't know if anyone else really does that or if it's a weird me thing?
When I first had a humor tag i called it "snort laugh" to convey, literal or just in tone, "this post surprised me into a half scoff laugh or making a snerk sound". It was inspired by a mutual's "ugly laughter" tag because i didn't want to steal that perfect tag whole cloth. But almost a decade later they're still using that tag and I've cycled through "snort laugh" and "laugh rule" and variants on "lmao" and "humour" and some i can't even remember. Right now I'm intermittently tagging "I loled". None of these have ever really fit well enough to stick around and I still think "snort laugh" every time i try a new one, even if i never liked that tag much either.
Some of my index tags are static and unchanging and some I still use, even if I used to tag every other post with them and now use that tag once a year maybe (social awareness comes to mind). Some I've always had 2 or 3 versions of, either because I like one but keep another for indexing or blacklisters (doggo and dogs) or simply because I can't recall what I use (was it world building or worldbuilding? Bat fam or bat family?) and end up converging as i decide on when and then diverging again when i change my mind... again. Many overlap a lot (positivity, daily dose of positivity, faith in humanity, love, human beings), while all actually being distinct enough i keep them all.
But with over a decade now of this account it seems it'd be a strange little nightmare to plumb, the work of a historian or linguist to go through the changing tides of tags and indexing, and I have to wonder what conclusions or insights they would be able to glean if they did, and what it might say about me.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
Google is so powerful that it "hides" other search systems from us. We just don't know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

UKGBC Releases new energy guidelines to aid in the race to net-zero
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has unveiled new energy guidance aimed at empowering stakeholders with the knowledge needed to make informed choices regarding energy procurement. A top objective for the UK is to achieve a carbon-neutral electricity system by 2035, aligning with net-zero emissions targets. This transition to a decarbonised grid hinges on a shift in energy sources for the built environment in the UK.
In an effort to encourage building owners to adapt to the availability of renewable electricity on the grid, the UKGBC is advocating for increased flexibility in operations. Buildings account for over 60% of the UK’s electricity demand, the built environment sector therefore plays a pivotal role in the pursuit of net-zero emissions.
The Drastic need for greater collaboration
The energy guidance underscores the urgency of collaboration between customers and energy suppliers. It emphasises the necessity for suppliers to furnish clearer, higher-quality information about their products, empowering customers to make well-informed choices regarding their electricity sources.
Additionally, the UKGBC stresses the significance of market evolution in incentivising building owners to operate their assets flexibly, reducing emissions while bolstering a grid reliant on wind and solar power.
This guidance equips stakeholders with the necessary tools for navigating electricity procurement effectively, ensuring that their practices actively contribute to decarbonisation efforts in the energy supply sector.
Yetunde Abdul, Head of Climate Action at UKGBC, emphasised, “Decarbonizing the electricity system is a top priority for achieving Net Zero. Critical to enabling this is understanding the active role our buildings and the way we procure energy must play. However, distinguishing the high-quality products that are supporting the energy system’s transition from the other ‘green’ offerings in the market is currently challenging.”
While tailored for individuals involved in corporate energy procurement for businesses or commercial buildings, the guidance is also valuable to those involved in the planning, construction, or operation of buildings. This includes energy systems designers, renewable energy providers, and energy brokers or suppliers.
Despite major advancements in efforts toward reducing consumption and emissions in the construction sector, the industry-standard still lags behind what is needed to achieve reductions in line with Paris Agreement targets. Many organisations suffer from a lack of access to expert information and sustainable adjustments and a lack of industry guidance to follow.
Guidelines such as these from industry leading organisations are essential to generating the impetus to make greater contributions to sustainability and in an effective manner. The future should see more specific and standardised guidance coming from industry leaders across all sectors as we approach 2030 and its environmental objectives.
