Introducing The Skull Index - A public collaborative resource website. You might have seen the post @dread-doughnuts made a while back!
While there are various skull resource sites on the web usually dedicated to a certain museum collection or a few museum collections of skulls. This is the first public collaboration skull resource website led by a small team of 5 individuals.
Do you collect skulls? Enjoy collecting and sharing helpful data such as measurements to help compare against other specimens? Consider becoming a collaborator! We currently have over 400 confirmed species on the index, and many more to come!
We are also in touch with various museums and educational institutions across the world, and hope to add some rarer specimens and hopefully extinct vertebrates at the end of the year! Our hope is that this website will be helpful for anyone. From researchers to students and artists, or to people who are simply interested in bones and skulls and just want to look at neat photos or compare skulls against their own collection for identification help! Please note that the Skull Index is a work-in-progress website! Most pages for species have not been made yet, our team is working hard on editing photos, compiling the information, and adding new content every day.
Keep up to date with news, join the community hub of visitors, and collaborators, and network with people from the museum industry in our DISCORD SERVER (Please note our server is 18+ only due to privacy and safety).

European Moose
Absolutely massive, this skull weights just over 2.5kg. That is just 1% of what a smaller female weighs, 1% !
This skull is also 0.33% of skulls added to the #jakelog . This is the 300th skull added and marks the completion of Book 10!

A pair of Plum Headed Parakeets
These were a mated pair in life, unfortunately they passed within a few months of each other after eating a poisonous plant that had grown into their outdoor aviary planted by a neighbouring house. They have been reunited in death and will remain together eternally ❤️
All animals are sustainably and legally sourced, I am a fully licensed taxidermist in my country

Tw animal bones
EDIT: there were meant to be images, my draft didnt save properly
Cleaned up the deer skull i found as best i could! Figured out it's a female roe deer :3
I got super lucky with her and only need to clean dirt and moss off. I still need to figure out how im gonna fully clean the brain cavity but that's a problem for later
She had quite a bit of moss on her and even had a plant growing in her nose and a nettle in her eye cavity!
While she is missing the end of her nose and incisors and something's been chewing her left mandible (see left image) i still wouldn't trade her for the world
She's even got all of the parts that connect to her spine intact (see middle image)
I haven't whitened the bones because she is incredibly fragile in some places and i don't want to risk making the bones brittle (i haven't done anything like this before)

I know its a female roe deer because of the lack of antlers and the way her eye is shaped, as muntjac deer are the other native species but this skull lacks the hole under the eye that muntjacs have

UK transmasc friends! I’m writing a short story wherein a character has a brief conversation with a doctor at a GP where some HRT/transition related stuff is mentioned, and since I haven’t gotten that far yet, I’d love some advice/feedback on just getting the dialogue right, mostly around what kind of language is used and how the doctor speaks.
It’s a short scene in a story that’ll probably be about 3/3.5k when done. The scene itself is under 500 words. I have a hard deadline of Feb 29th—currently the rough draft will be finished tomorrow, and a clean draft done by the start of next week, though I’m happy for folks who’d just be able to look at the one scene to see it early.
The story itself is a light contemporary horror piece, featuring dental horror/dental anxiety. (it’s called HRTeeth, because I like to think I’m funny)

just had the day of my vulture dreams holy shit
tw for dead animal mention & stuff to do with dead animal bones/bodies
so basically i started by getting the bulk of the decomposed stuff off the back end of a rabbit i found, then took it to my territory to bury so the rest can rot off naturally and not be so stank
then once id done that i decided to explore my territory a bit cause i figured out how to reach a new area i hadn't before and found a roe deer skull with molars and both mandibles!!
its a female, no antlers and she'd been there a while judging by the complete decomposition she'd undergone, just had some moss and dirt on her. poor thing had a plant growing in her nose!
i got sooo lucky, albeit having to crawl through some brambles, and took her home to clean her up! I'll maybe upload some photos of my vulture display once im done organising :3
