Fate - Throwback Thursday Edition (Chapters 1-3)

I'm reformating Cruelty and Fairness of Fate (and its sequels) to archive at AO3, and thought I'd have some fun posting the chapters for throwback Thursdays. I've corrected a few typos and lines of dialogue, but the story is otherwise the same as when it originally went up in 2002.

It had been just over three weeks since Makoto and her friends had completed their latest school term.  They’d spent that night celebrating both their survival of it all and the temporary freedom they’d been granted.

Ami had begged off early, blaming her plane leaving at three the next morning as the cause.  As the blue-haired girl hugged her friends goodbye, Makoto began to feel an unpleasant pressure building in her chest. 

She felt it again two days later as they all stood at the bus station saying their goodbyes to Rei, Minako’s rather enthusiastic farewell drawing stares, a girlish giggle from Usagi, and mutters of “It’s just a phase” from Rei’s grandfather.

Too soon afterwards, Makoto found herself saying goodbye to both Minako and Usagi.  Usagi had been the last of the group to leave, and Makoto had stood there watching as her friend’s car pulled away just after dawn.  She had remained there for a time, even though the car was long gone from her sight.  The pressure and tightness in her chest was there again, stronger than it had been for a long time.

“You’re being stupid, Makoto,” she’d said to herself.  “They’re not leaving you.  In a few weeks, they’ll be back.  They’re all coming back.”

Since then, she’d done everything she could think of to occupy herself.  Makoto’s usually clean apartment was beyond spotless.  Every stray dish had been cleaned, every article of clothing washed and pressed.  Her kitchen looked like a bakery.  She had even finished all of her summer homework, though without Ami there to go over it with her, she couldn’t guarantee its accuracy.  All these chores, combined with her daily workout, had kept Makoto’s mind and body sufficiently occupied.

Then, three days ago, she received a postcard from Minako.  It was a kind and simple thing; just a note to say hi and let her know she hadn’t been forgotten.  Yet it had put Makoto in a slump that she couldn’t quite pull herself out of.

She needed to talk to someone or just see a familiar face...

Heavenly Pearl's Fic Review 2022 - Tell Me A Secret

"Tell Me A Secret" was the second story I wrote for Sailor Moon Rare Pair Week.

Summary: When Minako spends the night with Rei at Hikawa, secrets are revealed and confessions are made.

Thoughts: Confession time. I have to admit, part of the inspiration to write a Reinako fic for SMRPW was partly out of spite after hearing of some fellow authors getting terrible reviews on FF.net, telling them they were wrong to write Rei and Minako as a couple because Minako obviously likes men, and only men. *cue eyeroll* And, sure enough, I did get a review berating me for being "manga-toxic" (so PGSM just doesn't exist, huh?) and writing Reinako, but, ugh, whatever. I think they make a wonderful couple, and with seven comments and 60 kudos on AO3, I'm clearly not the only one who enjoys them together! (I'm pretty sure this was the fic that got the most comments of those I wrote this year? *checks* Yep!)

Anyway, I'm kinda proud of the dialogue in this fic. I got quite a few compliments about how natural and in-character it felt, which was nice to hear! I particularly love the part where Minako is listing a bunch of euphemisms for having sex (of course mangling some of them in her own endearing Minako-way) and Rei's like, "Got jiggy with it?" (ah, the 90s…) and wondering where Minako even picked up such a strange idiom. And like I mentioned in my lookback of "In The Closet", it was really important to me to make clear that Rei still considers herself as being on the asexual spectrum even though she has come to be romantically and sexually attracted to Minako because of their strong emotional bond.

just a warning, two of these have nsfw in them (In The Corner of Her Mind and Heartfelt Obligation) but are skippable, so if you’re like me and aren’t a fan of that then you can just skip the chapter!

In The Corner of Her Mind - this ones an oldie but i read it time and time again bc it breaks my heart in the BEST way possible especially since its set in the PGSM universe :'D if u want an amnesia reinako au fic, this one ticks all the boxes Point Not Taken - also a really old fic, but oh my god Victoria G's fics make me kick my feet and giggle and knowing they were a co-writer for the Carmilla web-series just makes so much sense bc i was obsessed with hollstein..... pls read their reinako fics they make me wanna throw up (affectionate) Through the Fire (Through Whatever, Come What May) - this one's not finished yet but the way the author writes the reinako dynamic is SO THEMMMM 🥰🥰 i adore when people write the reinako dynamic just right and this fic hits that spot for me red on my tongue (the red of your tongue) - i am so obsessed with fics that are abt present reinako finding out abt love affairs between silver millennium mars & venus which either cue their realization moment or push them to confess :3 this one has to be my fav out of all of YNK’s reinako fics, it made me tear up so bad at some parts like they are so Soulmates it makes me insane. pls read all of YNK's reinako fics after this i promise u wont regret it Heartfelt Obligation - ofc i had to link the mandatory princess/bodyguard au set in the silver millennium where they dislike each other at first but then slowly start catching feelings :33 it's incomplete but i love the silly banter and how they warm up to each other in this fic, its so cute 🥺 i like the burning sun (because i'm running with you) - small oneshot thats also so cute where they're just normal teens with crushes on each other,,, minako is so whipped for rei and rei is so stupid god bless

She's the tear in my heart, I'm on fire - the gay yearning in this one is so UNBELIEVEABLY off the charts it's so sweet and fills that slice of life highschool trope hole if u like that!! minako does get stoned in this one, not during the whole fic, but i figured i would warn anyways in case that makes anyone uncomfy Past Loves And Current Problems - ending this with this cute fic of minako finding out about greek mythology regarding mars and venus being lovers teehee ^_^ this fic also talks about ace's "curse" on venus from the codename sailor v manga AND I LOVE THAT i wish more fics talked abt that.... i have so so so many more i want to talk about and show everyone but i feel bad for this wall of text so i will leave that for a pt2/pt3 in the future mayb... i am filled with reinako brainrot and its never going away im so sorry u guys 💔

you may have been aaked this before but I was just wonderin', what was the first pair you ever shipped? was it toyomi?

It was not, actually! It was the first ship I did art for that got posted online, but not truly my first.

No, that would go to ReixUsagi (Sailor Moon) back when I was barely in middle school. I had seen our dub first and never thought about it before, but once I got my hands on the SMR movie, and show those moments of Mars actively caring for Moon...something clicked. Once I saw more of the original anime it just solidified. I hunted and saved pics, and I even doodled some stuff in my old notebooks! Tried sharing with my friends, but I had no idea that yuri wasn't really a thing you can share with friends (I knew not to share with my parents but I thought it was okay to share with my VERY HET friends lmao)

That pairing used to be way more prolific back in the day than now (with much more Reinako proof happening in other media over the years). It was because of the 90s anime being more accessible, and that anime did treat Mamoru dirty while hyping up these little ReiUsa scenes a lot. A common fic trope was that Mamoru was being abusive and Usagi would run to Rei because she trusted her (little did she know that it was because Rei loved her~ ooh~). But the series has gone away from the 90s mindset, so it ,too, fizzled away over time.

And something happened about a decade ago that made me go sour on the ship in general...so I just don't ship it anymore, either.

Tomo and Yomi, though? Always. They're always loved, even as I get into other things~

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 25 - Soulmate AU

The Soulmate Trope is the last of our posts for the month of February! This one is dedicated to  @sinjazz , whose idea it was to add it to the options in the Tophat. When I had mentioned that I was working on this, my husband’s reaction was “isn’t entire Sailor Moon premise all about those two being soulmates?!” - he is not wrong, but it is fun to explore concepts of marks, dreams, and other ways to figure out you are meant for each other 🙂

Finding Love: Chapter 66: My Moon Bunny - @wildriverinthesky

This one shot in the collection of stories is all about the mark. Only one half of the pair has it and it changes to being in colour from grayscale once you meet your soulmate. Mamoru has one of those and now knows that Usagi might just be his and now has the task of convincing her to believe him.

Finding Love: Chapter 30: Sexy Cop - @wildriverinthesky

Our second entry from @wildriverinthesky for this week! In this one, Usagi witnesses a horrific motorcycle crash on a way to a Halloween party, only to notice that the person in front of her is the one she has been dreaming of for most of her life.

Dr Chiba has been called in with many others to help victims of a crash, and while doing round with Ami gets entranced by one of the newly admitted patients (he does NOT break any doctor- patient rules, just so we are clear ;) )

Usagi and Mamoru both saw colours in their dreams, which is very unusual in this AU. One day they bump into each other at Crown, setting off a series of conversations and realizations. 

Haru no Kousekiinai Arimasu - Lina_Natsudori (Jennifer Ellison)

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo mask have a connection that lets the other understand what they might be feeling, something Sailor Venus and Sailor Mars are trying their best to nip at the bud. This multichapter is re-telling of the first arc but with a stronger leaning towards soulmates trope. 

Tokens of Affection: Chapter 10: 1st U_M anniversary: Soul Mates - Lina_Natsudori (Jennifer Ellison)

Our second entry from this author for this week - this one is a fun exchange between Usagi and Mamoru about their knowledge of mythology, with Usagi explaining origins of the term Soulmates to him in a more simplified terms than his textbook

The Space Between: Chapter 19: Destiny  - @uglygreenjacket

I think this one-shot in the collection has one of my favorite lines when it comes to Usagi and Mamoru - “It was a flirtation, you and me. You and Usagi are…" she trailed off, trying to find the right word, "...destiny." In this one shot, Rei and Mamoru discuss what their dating actually meant to both of them.

How long have you been creating works in fandom spaces? How long have you been active in the SM fandom?

I'm one of the OG crew from when the internet was young (lol). I wrote SM fanfiction as a teenager during the era of Alicia Blade, ASMR, etc., I had a short stint in as the writing mod in the SML LJ community, and have recently returned to writing fanfiction, mostly smut, after a long hiatus. I also write for Seven Deadly Sins when I'm not completely lost in SM.

What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)

I cannot draw to save my life or take a good picture, so I am solidly a writer only. I am super impressed by folx who can work in multiple mediums. Words are hard enough, so that's what I stick too :D

What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?

I love the joy & support the community has for each other as well as the diversity of ships and people in the fandom. For the characters, there are so many facets to play with and explore that I never feel like I'm done telling their stories. There are so many more situations to put these babies in!

Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?

I write more UsaMamo than any other pairing, but ReiNako are my grumpy x sunshine queens and I love them. I've also delved into writing KunZoi recently and love their dynamic as well. I'm very much ship and let ship, so I enjoy reading pretty much any ship, but I can only write a pairing/poly that I feel I have a good grasp on. Hence, usually UsaMamo, ReiNako, and sometimes KunZoi.

What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?

All the feels (lol). I have specific facets of their personalities or backgrounds that I love to explore. I love to mess with Mamoru the Orphan and how that shapes his decisions & personality (good and bad), and how he evolves with that background over time. I love happy-go-lucky Usagi who is just out in a world being herself, falling through life and living it to the fullest, but also has these big responsibilities and rises to every call.

Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?

I have multiple WIPs right now, but I tend to be very focused on one at a time (for better or worse). I don't like leaving things not done, so multiple WIPs starts to grate on me to just get it done.

Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?

I like one shots / smaller fics where I can hint at how we got here or how the future might look after, but the focus is one small moment between the characters. That said, I currently have two long fics I'm working on... because reasons. XD

Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?

I write fairly broadly between dark, smut, and some fluff. There's usually a comedic edge, so it's not 24/7 serious (I'm not that person if you noticed ;D ). My favorite tropes are forbidden love/romance and the banter of grumpy x sunshine. There are definite themes but they may not always come through. For Mamoru, I like to put him in situations he isn't prepared for and help him make bad decisions. I really enjoy playing with his connection to Earth / Elysion and his strong sense of loyalty/duty to Usagi, as well as his shitennou. For Usagi, I think her friends treat her too delicately and, even though she's a bit silly or not totally organized, she will show up for her friends or the world when it's in trouble. I like to play in that space where she is unexpectedly mature b/c Usagi is a quintessential example of a person who doesn't have her shit together, she's not perfect & that's okay, and she can save the world just as she is. MF QUEEN.

I bring these elements into my other pairings--they are pretty common dynamics. KunZoi and ReiNako are facets of grumpy x sunshine and love vs duty/honor. So, I do like to push the characters into uncomfortable territory and then see how they respond. Rei always raises to the bait. Kunzite will crumble... eventually (if mechanical bulls are involved).

Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?

I've done a little bit of everything in my tenure in the fandom, but I think I'd like to produce a few more chaptered works, but not excessively long (6 chaps vs 20). I seem to be strong in either the one shot category or long fic category, but not in between. So that's something I'd very much like to work on for my own sanity.

Fate (chapters 27 - Epilogue) - Throwback Thursday edition

The first stitch to repair a broken relationship, a practice session, and the conclusion... sort of.

The noise had no real directionality.  At least, to Rei it didn’t.  If it hadn’t been for the very distinctive ring tone, she would have been glad to be annoyed with the couple two rows ahead of them for leaving their cell phones on.  Instead, as the sound of Sailor V finishing off one of her enemies emanated from Minako’s sweater pocket, she sunk down in her seat and tried to pretend it wasn’t them.

“You know, you’re supposed to turn that off before the movie starts,” muttered Rei as Minako finally pulled the phone from her pocket.

Seemingly oblivious to the death stares they were getting from the group on their right, Minako whispered back, “I usually do.  Guess it’s a good thing I forgot to this time, huh?”  She hit the answer button on the phone, but before she could even say hello, Usagi’s panicked voice came roaring through.

“I know you’re on a date, and I’m sorry, but she’s in labor, and I can’t get a hold of Ami!” rambled out Usagi at a rapid fire pace.  “She’s in class, so Luna won’t let me use the communicators, but she won’t answer her phone, and Luna told me to call you instead since I couldn’t get her, and…  Help!”

They’d left their seats among the annoyed grumbles of the other moviegoers as soon as they heard Usagi’s voice.  They were halfway through the lobby when that last plea made Minako reflexively pull the phone from her ear to save her hearing.

“We’re closer to Ami than Mako-chan,” thought Rei out loud.  “Get her, then go to the apartment?”

Minako nodded, then said into the phone, “Try and stay calm, Usagi.  It won’t take us long to get there.  Can she wait long enough for us to pick up Ami first?”

Usagi started to answer, but was cut off by someone shouting something to her from across the apartment.  Minako couldn’t make out what was said, though she did think she heard the words ‘damn’ and ‘water’, but Usagi’s answer came through loud and clear.

“What do you mean it broke?” called back Usagi.  “Well then, fix it!”

Minako took a deep breath and looked at Rei.  “I think we’re going to need a plan B.”

2022 Fanfic In Review

Since I did the whole Fanfic Review thing, I'm just going to do one of those year-end questionnaires I usually fill out.

1. List of fics completed this year

2. Number of words written: 62,797 which is a bit disappointing since I had like a 100,000 more words last year, but, eh, if you include WIPs and the zine fic that hasn't been posted yet, the number would be bigger.

3. Your most popular fic: I'd say it might as well be a tie between "Welcome To The Family" (100 kudos) and "In The Closet" (99 kudos), but WTTM has six comments to ITC's three, so I guess "Welcome To The Family" is technically the most popular.

4. Your personal fav: "The Baby Question", if I have to choose.

5. Your fav scene: Probably the part in "The Baby Question" when Yuuri and Viktor have just decided to have a baby and are making out on the couch. I just love the little exchange they have where Yuuri reminds Viktor that he can't actually get him pregnant, and Viktor's like, "Don't ruin things with your science and logic!" I'm also rather fond of the dinner scene between Otabek, Yuri, and their toddler son, Lev, in "Never Too Old".

6. A fic or scene that challenged you: Oh, the first version of "Adding Some Spice" was definitely a challenge! I wrote it for the SM Quickies event, and 1,000 words is simply not enough to write an engaging threesome. I did get a chance to expand it later for Sailor Moon Smutember, though, which helped. Also, "A New Home" was the first time I wrote a fic in first person in at least a decade, so I was definitely out of practice!

7. A line of writing you’re proud of: Well, this is more a passage than a line, but this is the part I was talking about in Question #5.

One kiss, of course, inevitably turned into two, then three. By the fourth, Yuuri had fallen on his back against the seat cushions, Viktor's lips journeying down his neck while his warm hands found their way underneath Yuuri's sweatshirt.

"Vitya…what are…you…doing?" Yuuri asked in between increasingly feverish kisses. "I thought…you were…tired?"

"Got a…second wind." Breathing heavily, Viktor propped himself up and grinned mischievously as he looked down at Yuuri beneath him. "Besides, if we're going to have a baby, there's no better time than the present to start trying, right?"

Yuuri laughed. "Didn't we go over this earlier? You can't get me pregnant!"

"Yuuuuuri!" He collapsed on top of Yuuri, burying his face in Yuuri's sweatshirt. "Don't spoil the fun with your science and logic!"

8. A comment that touched you: All of them! (Well, except for the one that called me "manga-toxic" for writing Reinako, and a couple of other troll-y FF.net reviews.)

9. Something that inspired your writing: @soulfulweaver's beautiful Mamotoki fanart was the inspiration behind "Pinkie Promise".

11. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc): Definitely hosting Sailor Moon Rare Pair Week! It was more successful than I dreamed it would be.

12. Do you have any writing goals for next year?: I'd really like to at least start posting the pre-canon JJBek fic I've been working on for the past couple of years. Also, just write more in general, I guess?
