Have you ever heard that The Beach Boys were one of the greatest, most influential bands of all time- either from critics or other famous musicians (like Paul McCartney) and you never really understood why because you thought they were just that corny surfing band? And even if you were curious, have you looked at their discography and saw that they released 30 albums over 50 years and felt dread not knowing where to start? Well...I’m here to try and help.

There’s definitely a lot of albums you do NOT need to listen to (they had a rough 80s & 90s) but, I’m choosing a variety of albums that illustrate best how- not only do they have an incredibly experimental discography and variety of sound that most people are unaware of- I’ve also chosen the albums (i feel) are the most essential and show how they’re deeply misunderstood as a band, and yes, how these albums have indeed influenced the development of psychedelic, prog, and even punk rock. So, Inspired by other templates on the web, here’s my own lil flowchart for classic rock or 60s & 70s music fans, or for those that are curious. Hopefully this helps!

Masters of the Air is raw.

That’s the only way I can describe it.

I am only one episode in and I had to stop because it is so unbelievably raw that it physically hurts. It figuratively and literally pulls at my heartstrings.

I’m not attached to the characters, heck I don’t even know any of their names yet, but I think I’m okay with that because much like other military movies, people die. And they don’t die nice. It freaking sucks because it just doesn’t feel fair. This show is amazing, beautiful production and killer historical accuracy, but it’s just not fair because

51% of bomber aircrews in WWII were killed in operations.

Only 24% survived the war unscathed.

They are the true definition of flyboys, these men in their flying machines. They are so young and so full of life that it hurts to watch just knowing what lies ahead of them.

But even though it hurts to watch, physically pains me to sit through every minute, I feel that I owe it to them. I need to watch this in remembrance of all those that served in those flying coffins and died as well as acknowledge what they went through to survive. I can suck it up and wrap myself in a blanket with my hood up, cowering on the floor leaning against the couch because if they can go up there knowing more than likely they’re not going home, I can watch a frickin tv show from my couch. If you can watch it, watch it.

Unnameable Truth (M) @thefiveboxingwizards | vacation, less than 5000 words, one-shot

I liked that this was a less sunny/happy/vacation-y story about repression and self-discovery. The summer's not happy and carefree for everyone. But there is hope at the end of this one.

Wasteland Baby (M) @checkdeezpucks | AU, one-shot

This surprised me! Despite the premise sounding a bit incongruous with Check Please, this was a great read. Mad Max Tater/Parse was a longshot for me but you proved me wrong, op. Would definitely not be mad if we got another chapter or two of this 👀

I keep thinking about this one, and Bitty/Jack's meet-cute and Bitty rollerblading. And quiches. And Tater being wingman!

I actually snorted out loud while reading this standing out on the sidewalk in a crowd of people while waiting for the streetcar. I have no shame. It's funny and cute, read it!

Shitty's backstory is important to me (!!!) and this was great. Discussion question: Is the origin of Shitty's porn-stache tied to the memory of a moustachioed ice cream vendor he idolizes from his youth? You tell me. It was hard to see tiny Shitty going through family problems but his au pair seems like the coolest!

I don't generally go for mermaid AUs but this was juuuust lovely! The frogs are wonderful here, and I really liked the setup and follow-through. And I'm not going to say any more than that Chowder makes a great appearance here :)

Making My Head Spin (E) @justlookfrightened | summer camp, zimbits, multi-chapter

Turns out I like fics where Bitty makes a go of it for the NHL! Loved seeing Jack and Bitty letting down their guard and risking being hurt in this one. Super sweet and a little spicy at the end :) Nothing better than that.

Heard The Mermaids Singing (M) @checkdeezpucks | rarepair, mermaids, one-shot

This was another work that wasn't sun-drenched and happy. I loved to see the gritty, almost gothic setting; loved to see some CP femmeslash. Loved to see the teeth and the texture here. Short and... piquant.

The Way Way North (T) by @mcbangle | zimbits, SHITTY KNIGHT!!, vacation, the beach, work that made me smile, frogs, multi-chapter

I keep thinking about this one. Listen, Shitty Knight is... essential. He is the GLUE that holds together CP Year One for me, okay? I know that this fic is primarily about Bitty and his parents' relationship, and his crush on Jack, and that is all done deftly and wonderfully. But Shitty is the standout for me here. (Also I now need to see the movie this is based on.)

Just a nice AU where Dex is ho-humming through his vacation until he chances upon the cute local bookshop owner (enter Nursey) who has fallen into a tidepool and needs a hand. What could be more adorable than that? I liked seeing some of Dex's family and backstory here. And I would live to see more 👀

This is super cute art and I loved the colour scheme. I can so imagine Bitty and Jack surfing together on vacation!

Okay, so, I was hit by a thought, really really hard, and like- so, the thing with Caleb and his parents. I know it's not the same as undoing it, but like-

He knows Two Clerics. Cad was only just barely short of gaining access to 9th lv spells, but he can gain a few lvs for a future fic, right?

There's got to be fics where Jester and Cad use True Resurrection to bring Caleb's parents back to life, right? Like maybe as a birthday or wedding gift? That has to exist, right? I can't find it from a cursory search, but... That exists, right? It has to.

The Order of the Stick is a D&D webcomic written & illustrated by Rich Burlew. The first strip ran in 2003, but it’s been good from the very first panel. In the 20 years since its start, it has developed each and every one of its main characters & villains into complex people that you want to root for.

okay professional recommendation over time for screaming!!!  there is romance!  character death!  family issues!  prophecies!  jokes that poke fun at D&D rules!  morally grey characters to cry about!  a backlog of over 1500 pages!
