These two insisted that it's not actually freezing cold outside, but Jon and I are battling horrible colds, so we watched them from inside. Had to pop out about 7 times for various reasons, mostly to retrieve balls kicked too high! 😂 But I'm very grateful that our garden is safe enough that we can watch them from indoors, and not have to be right next to them. I couldn't face writing about this at the time, so this is about a couple of days ago. We had a rough evening. Normal kid stuff. Wobblies about seemingly trivial things, that meant a lot to them. Or didn't, but they were tired and everything felt harder to cope with. We've all had colds lately, and sleep has been rubbish all-round. We had tears and screaming about lots and lots of different things. Wanting a bath, not wanting to have a bath, not wanting to get out of the bath, bath water was too hot, too cold, not bubbly enough, not deep enough, too deep... That kind of afternoon. I can handle the tears pretty well, but the screaming really affects me. My inner cavewoman's fight-or-flight urges are set off, but I can't do what my body wants to. I can't run away from my screaming child, or fight them. I was completely dysregulated, struggling to calm myself enough to help the children to calm down. I did my best, and they seemed a lot calmer, but I still felt shaky, so when my husband finished work, I took a bit of time to be alone and just calm down listening to music and writing a bit of my next book. When I came back downstairs 20 minutes later, my children gave me hugs and these pictures they had made for me. Zoe said "I made you this to cheer you up," and Jake told me "I drew you a heart to make you feel better, because hearts mean I love you."
