obviously different people say different things and you can support something existing while still complaining about things not being to your taste as long as you don't comment it on actual creationssss

but sometimes it does get mentally chaotic seeing posts saying you should be allowed to write whatever you want and bad art is okay etc etc and then i scroll down a little more to see people having incredibly high expectations for things that people make for fun and for free in fandom spaces and it's like...

i think there is a gap between seeing our tumblr peers tm as people and creatives having fun, but ourselves as consumers expecting perfect content. you are demanding perfection from those same people you claim to want to support.

Being Their Friend

Type: Headcanons

A/N: Hi. These are just for fun; don't get up in arms if they aren't perfect (they can't be anyway, considering how far into the show we are). Requests aren't open (EDIT: they are open now). Spoilers obviously. Includes only the main six because I honestly don't know enough about Caine yet.

Pomni

Being her friend entails a multitude of existential crises. Everyone's trying to find their own way to cope, but expect to be helping her through many a panic attack. She's a hot mess most of the time, and doesn't really know what to do.

As seen in the trailer, she still gets scared of getting hurt, much unlike people like Ragatha who know they can't be harmed by knives or whatever else Caine throws at them. It'd be your job to help calm her down during these situations and help her adjust to not being hurt.

Other than that, I imagine once Pomni gets (semi) used to living in the digital circus you'd spend a lot of time looking for the exit. She definitely wants to get out of there before she becomes abstracted--something she knows is possible with her mental state. She also just wants to get her and everyone else out of there. Even that jackass Jax.

Pomni would take a lot of comfort in the things that connect her to the real world like food. If she offers you some food, you know you're really friends with her. If she had access to drawing/painting equipment or whatnot, I reckon she'd try to draw herself in her real form (if she could remember). She's like to see what you look like, and would compliment you on your appearance.

Ragatha

Ragatha's been in the digital circus for a while, and is much more comfortable with it than some of her other friends (or so she likes to pretend). She's fine with getting hit with knives as seen in her introduction short and likely wouldn't be scared of dying by anything else. As she said, her only fear is centipedes.

Still, it'll be your job to get them out of her room for her. Everyone knows what an arsehole Jax can be, and she sure as hell isn't risking walking into her room to find tens of thousands of them. If you don't do it, she's staying in your room for an indefinite amount of time.

Actually, I think Ragatha would like to have sleepovers anyway. It'd keep her impending thoughts at bay. Even if she doesn't require sleep, it's fun and reminds her of home. Like I said in Pomni's section, I think she'd enjoy drawing or painting. Or any creative visual art really, but especially drawing and painting for the purpose of making pictures of what you look like outside of the digital world.

Though be warned, the sight of her may send her off on a spiral of homesickness. Since Ragatha serves as a kind of rock of stability (as best as her overly optimistic self can), seeing her collapse may cause the others to collapse, too. Except maybe Jax, but it'll be up to you to try and get everyone back together before abstraction happens.

Jax

First of all, I don't know if this is possible. Not only are we so little into the show to really know, but Gooseworx also said he's going to have some really bad scenes. So, I suppose you won the lottery in doing this...Maybe. It really depends on how you look at it.

Because first of all, he's still a massive dick. He's just rude to everyone, so expect nothing different. He'll still be a jerk to you, "prank" you, or really, just straight up bully you. Honestly, half the time you can't even tell this guy is supposed to like you. He doesn't even really say sorry unless it's sarcastic.

The only way you can tell he likes you as a friend is when he gets all up in arms about you being annoyed at him. At first, at least, he's confused as to why you can't just let it go. Over time, though, he gets more in tune with his emotions and starts to mellow out a little.

However, it does come with the perk of having someone who will beat the ever-loving life out of whoever hurt you. Okay, well, not that far--he's got to keep his reputation as someone who doesn't care about other people, so he'll at most just be a bit of a bigger pain in their side. But it's still there.

Things you'd do together include terrorising the other members (or, he tries to get you in on it, anyway), sneaking into people's rooms to snoop around, and all-in-all just being a bit of a pain. But you also do other things; he seems like he's not one for visual arts or theatre, but maybe he could play an instrument and may--very heavy on the "may"--teach you some stuff. Otherwise, I don't think he's an arts guy. He'd enjoy video games, though, if they had those! And going to the digital carnival for thrills along with just exploring the grounds.

Kinger

Kinger would be an interesting friend. I have two routes for this guy based on a theory I saw. Route one follows him actually being on the brink of insanity/abstraction. In this route, you have to make sure he's alright. Just be gentle with him and check up on him every now and then. But don't be in his face all the time. Everyone needs a bit of personal space.

You can still hang out with Kinger, obviously. You can still talk about things you'd normally talk about, whatever that may be. Just don't bring up the abstracted queen (who I shall be calling Queener). It'll bring up some...Bad memories.

Anyways, my second route is this: based on a theory, Kinger is actually one of the more stable ones in the group, and is just pretending to be on the brink of losing it. Basically, if I remember right, he's pretending in order to get out of the activities/shenanigans of the group.

But no matter what his reason for doing it is, he's smart as hell. Having tricked everyone, it'd take a keen eye to figure it out. If you do, he'd be impressed. Once he trusts you enough, the two of you will discuss the other circus members and how to outsmart them secretly. You'll also just hang out, gossip...He feels like a guy who'd be into drama, with his whole being the actual king thing. You two would do some impromptu skits and whatnot to pass the time.

Gangle

Oh, Gangle. What would you do with Gangle? Well, you'd certainly have to be gentle with her. She's a very fragile soul--and also fragile physically--and needs some care. Help her repair her mask, or better yet, stop Jax from breaking it in the first place. In fact, just stop him from doing any mean stuff to her in the first place.

Other than that, Gangle is someone who'd actually enjoy drawing as a hobby and not just a memories thing. She draws anime, and would make you and her anime personas with cool abilities and features like wings and shit. I imagine her art style is very early-mid 2000s anime, with the really big eyes and whatnot.

Anyways, I reckon she'd also write. Mostly fanfiction when she wasn't stuck in the digital world, but since there's no fandoms to write about now she'd start branching out into her own original stories. But don't get me wrong; if anyone was going to write about their friends and fellow members it'd be her. She just hides it somewhere other than her room. Gangle would like to write stories about your sonas going on adventures and saving the world.

Eventually, these stories probably get found by Jax or someone else (but probably Jax). He'd laugh his arse off at them and would run to tell everyone about it. Unless you can absolutely beat the shit out of him, prepare to do some explaining and also comforting for her.

Zooble

Zooble does not give much of a shit about the others. They wouldn't let them die (at least I think so), but they're in no way buddy-buddy with them. In order to be friends with them, you'd have to meet their strict criteria. So, good job on that!

Being friends with them would either involve lots of gossip because they want to talk shit about people and complain, or it'd have no gossip because they honestly couldn't care less about the others. I can't tell. But if you do gossip, I imagine they know a lot about the other members. You'd be filled in on everything they know, too. They've been dying for someone to tell this too.

Zooble's also very particular about their looks, as seen in their introductory short. They have many stored limbs and whatnot to swap around for their mood. Don't mess with their body by switching around their antennae-like things or ripping off their body parts like Jax. They will retaliate.

Going off of this, though, I imagine they're pretty strong. I mean, they choked Jax like that. So, if anyone (him) comes around to piss you off, you best bet they'll be on their way to beat his arse. Though, it probably ends in a tug-of-war with one of their arms.

Hugs vs Pain

Hi everyone!

I went to the dentist today and i'm hurt as hell, so here is a story about it with Ona 🤣

TW : Dentist.

“Ona, Princesa, I don’t want to go. Please don’t make me go, I’ll do anything I swear!”

“Baby stop” Ona laughs, rolling her eyes.

She gets out of the car and if you really considered the idea of running away from her and the building you’re facing, your girlfriend doesn’t let you the time to do it. She opens the door of her car and wait patiently that you get out too. Which you did while grumbling.

“Ona, please” you beg.

“No Babe. You literally had fever last week because of that, so you will go in this dental office to get those wisdom teeth removed.”

Under her beautiful smile and her brown doe eyes, Ona is really stubborn. She took an appointment for you when you always find an excuse not to do it and came with you today to be sure that you will be here. Both of you know that if she wasn’t with you, you wouldn’t be here.

Ona takes your hand and drag you with her. The receptionist hides a smile of amusement when she sees both of you. You are clinging to Ona’s hand like if life depends of it.

You almost jump when the dentist come to take you to her office and it’s at that time that Ona realizes that you’re not playing with her or exaggerate things. She knows that you are scared of dentist, you never hide this point to her. The look of horror that you throw her makes her feel bad, before remembering how much you were suffering last week when you admit that your teeth were hurting. Your pain lasts some days before you eventually talked about it to your girlfriend.

When she strokes your forehead, she realize that you had fever too.

“Can I come with you?” Ona asks your dentist softly.

After looking at you, the dentist nods and Ona jumps on her feet to follow you. On the chair, you close your eyes, not wanting to see anything that he will do to you. You are concentrated on Ona’s hand in yours, your girlfriend stroking lovingly your fingers.

The appointment last almost one hour and you almost faint a thousand times. You are feeling strange when you get up from the chair, your legs shaking. You let Ona drags you once again, following her to the desk of the receptionist and then to her car.

“Are you alright?” Ona asks before starting her car.

You grumble for any answer, your mouth still asleep and hurting too. You hate that feeling. Ona stops at the pharmacy near her building to buy some painkiller and antibiotic before you can finally find the comfort of her bed. You realize quickly that the lying position is awful for your pain though.

Ona quickly arranges the bed with her multitude of cushions, so that you can be comfortable sitting, before handing you a glass of water and a painkiller.

“Take this mi Amor” she says.

You sigh but take it anyway. The cold water makes you shiver, and not in a great way, but you hope that it will help you to feel better soon. After you swallow it, Ona takes you against her to cuddle and you let yourself go against her. You feel dizzy and close your eyes. You don’t need more than five minutes before falling asleep.

When you wake up after, you frown realizing that your girlfriend isn’t with you anymore. The place where she was is still hot, meaning that she’s not gone for too long, but she’s still not here. You sit on the bed and start to get up from the bed to look for her when Ona comes back in the room.

“Where are you going?” she asks.

“You weren’t here when I woke up” you pout.

Pushing you softly back against the cushion, Ona puts a trail next to you on the bed. You frown while looking at it, seeing a yogurt and a bowl soup. Nothing you really like, but it seems like Ona made the soup herself and you feel your heart fluttered at the idea.

“The dentist said nothing too hot or too cold, so I made a soup but it isn’t really hot. And the yogurt is out of the fridge for several minutes now.”

“Thank you, Oni.” you say with a grateful smile.

“You’re welcome” Ona smiles, sitting next to you again.

You struggle to eat properly to be honest, your mouth is always strange, and you are scared of hurting yourself a little more. Ona proposed to feed you, but you declined, thinking that this situation is already embarrassing enough for you.

When you are finish, Ona takes the trail to put it on her nightstand and takes you again in her arms. She kisses your hair before looking at you.

“Can I kiss you?”

“Very softly” you answer, just unable to refuse her a kiss.

Ona nods and is very careful not to touch your face when she puts her lips against yours.

Your still remember the first time Ona kissed you. It was after taking you home after a game. You already went to two dates before, and she never kissed you at that point. That day, when she walked you to your door, she doesn’t go for the usual kiss on your cheek, but she kissed you right on the lips.

You were so shocked that you didn’t react at first, making Ona believing that she totally misread the situation. She wasn’t, and you had to kiss her yourself to make her stop her repeated apologies in a Catalan way too fast for you.

“I’m sorry that you are in so much pain” Ona mumble against your skin when she kisses your forehead. “If I could, I would take it so you wouldn’t be hurt.”

“I’ll be ok with more cuddle” you mumble, taking one more painkiller with some water.

Like every other time it makes you feel sleepy again and you literally wrap yourself around Ona. You smile when you hear her giggles, hiding your face in the hollow of her neck.

“I love you so much.” you whisper, half asleep.

“I love you even more.”

You hum, not able to answer something else as the sleep takes you away. Ona holds you tenderly against her, gently stroking your back under your t-shirt with her fingertips. She holds you the time you are asleep and is still holding you protectively against her when you wake up.

“Here she is” Ona smiles when you stir, putting her phone on the mattress.

“Hola” you mumble, stroking her neck with your nose.

She shivers slightly and you smile when you realize it.

“Did you sleep well?”

“I always sleep well when I’m in your arms.”

“Painkiller make you all soft?” Ona laughs.

“Don’t make fun of me. I’m hurt” you pout.

Ona laughs again and you can’t do anything but smile. While doing it, you realize that the pain is less strong than before and that’s something to emphasize. Maybe tonight you will be able to eat something other than soup.

You stay like this for several minutes, enjoying Ona’s tender caresses on your body. You kiss her jaw several times, tracing her freckles with your lips.

“Thank you for taking so good care of me” you whisper.

“Always, mi Amor.”

You could get him the silliest thing and he'll be so happy. You'll have his stretchy arms wrapped around you and multiple kisses on your face while he's yelling 'thank you' multiple times within an instant.

Zoro:

Quality time.

He's not much of a touchy guy and he's not the greatest with words.

But he actively seeks you out on the Sunny. He just wants to be by you<3

He's not great at words, so just being by you is enough for him

He will make you take naps with him<3

He likes to sit by you when he's cleaning his swords.

Please just chill with him while he trains. He likes being in your presence.

This goes both ways low-key. He knows that you love him so he doesn't need to be reminded. And as mentioned earlier, he's not really a touchy feely guy.

There was too much noise for MC to hear anything other than her own breath. The music was so loud people downtown were probably awake because of it and she wouldn’t be surprised if the screams of those celebrating the festivities were as loud too. MC couldn’t even understand the conversations around her anymore, all of them blended into one massive yell topped with a sprinkle of the jovial sounds of the attractions.

On the good side, however, the churro she was eating was ridiculously delicious. Covered in sugar and cinnamon, the only thing missing was a cup of hot chocolate, but MC guessed that would’ve been a little complicated to enjoy during a night out at the fair.

Beel would’ve found a way to do so, no doubt, but he wasn’t the one walking on heels on a gravel road.

Her dear boyfriend was munching on a churro as well, although he had eaten an entire dozen just minutes before and he had another one ready to go. One hand full of food and the other one holding MC’s in a firm yet gentle grasp.

Just like his Father intended.

But much to MC’s disappointment, the sweetness of the churro didn’t distract her from the excruciating pain her feet were suffering; because as comfortable as the heels were at the beginning of their date, they had been walking for some very long hours, going from one corner of the fair to another while stopping at every food stall available.

She was sure her pinky toes were bleeding and the more she walked, the more she empathized with Achilles. There was no way her heels would heal in less than a day; just the thought of cleaning the wounds was sending chills down her spine.

To her surprise, Beel stopped walking to look at her while his thumb drew circles on her skin. The corners of his mouth were full of sugar and she had to stop herself from reaching up to clean them for him.

“Is everything okay, MC?”

She sighed with a sad frown.

“No, not really. My feet are killing me”

“Your feet?”

He immediately looked down and stared at the heels with a scowl, like he had a personal problem with them. The sight would’ve been a little more frightening if he wasn’t gulping down churros like his life depended on it.

“Do you mind if we sit down for a bit?”

“Uh? Why would I mind?”

Beel looked at her in pure confusion and surprise. Once he finally had his other hand free, he turned around and pointed at his back, not caring when people gasped at the sight of one of the Avatars kneeling on the ground.

“What are you doing?”

He shrugged and pointed again.

“You said your feet hurt”

MC felt a smile creeping across her face, cheeks warming up at his genuineness. She didn’t waste any time doing as he asked, first hugging his neck and then letting her legs rest on either side of his waist.

“Where now?” she asked while he stood up and took her heels off, holding them both in one hand.

“You choose”

The multitude slowly went back to ignoring them again and MC looked around to check if there was any place they hadn’t visited yet, but she didn’t find anything. The whole atmosphere suddenly tired her.

“Why don’t we go to a park or something?”

Beel turned his face to hear her better, faintly blushing when her lips touched the shell of his ear.

“Just you and me going for a stroll… How does it sound?”

“Sounds perfect to me, MC”

He leaned back to kiss her lips and walked towards the main entrance of the fair, her heels still in hand. MC let herself relax against his body, setting aside his neck collar to kiss the freckles on his shoulder before resting her head.

Unbeknownst to her, his smile grew bigger.

• in my perception between them, their relationship could go either way - I love the interpretation of them seeing one another as brothers, I love the interpretation of them being lovers, I think either one fits them and it's precious and depending on the Shuggy flavor of the day. It's never both at the same time though. One or the other.

• Buggy has always been terrifyingly flexible. It was waved off when he was very little, but it was only around the time Crocus joined the crew that he noticed Buggy was much more flexible than most kids his age. Turns out baby blue has hypermobility syndrome. The Roger pirates helped him learn wrapping techniques to help stabilize his wrists and knees and hips, his biggest problem areas, but after the Devil Fruit Fiasco, he can and will just drop a limb. Floating is so much easier on bad pain days.

• Buggy still wraps and braces his body when he can, but he also hides most of them beneath his clothes. Few have seen him freely in braces. Cabaji and Mohji are the most familiar with that. Ritchie takes his role thereof as a living, furry weighted heating pad.

• Cross Guild happens, and it goes fairly similar to Canon, but Buggy quite literally within that three week time frame got the entirety of his loan back AND the interest and was like "hey so like. Did you still want this or-?"

• the mercenaries at Karai Bari are all very progressive. Buggy is a lax ruler, by most standards, but he puts his foot down firmly regarding bigotry, racism, sexism, etc.

• Buggy is not actually human, but he doesn't know that. He was orphaned at a VERY early age, was adopted by Roger pretty young, and he doesn't really remember much pre-piracy. He does know his genetics are a little weird, #ThanksCrocus, but not much beyond that. This may be Important later on if anyone wants some silly little concepts

• once took off a limb and forgot where he left it. Has genuinely devoted microchipping his limbs.

Yeah lol. But I do appreciate that I've had two different people point out the plain/plane thing! Like sincerely—I'm always worried that my ADHD and I are missing a TON of typos and that everyone is too polite to point them out, but I want folks to point them out so I can fix them! This specific one happened to not be a typo, but the fact that y'all have pointed it out means you'd probably point out other typos too, which I'm always grateful for.

Star the shape as in ⭐️ the five-pointed one? They probably have a word for it, but since they can't see it from the top, the visual effect of the shape wouldn't have the same significance to them.

The word probably means something different depending on if they consider a star "five points like a pentagon, but with lines connecting each point to an opposite point instead of a neighboring point," or "ten points like a decagon, but half the points go in instead of out":

(they wouldn't be able to accurately draw the shape on a paper like we can, since their papers look like a line; but, to be fair, WE can't accurately draw a cube, since our papers look like a flat surface. And yet somehow we can make drawings we understand to be cubes so I'm sure they can make drawings they understand to be stars.)

If they're going by definition one, whatever word would translate into English as "star [as in the shape]" probably has a definition to them like "simple spirolateral pentagon." If they're going by definition two, it would probably translate like "isotoxal concave decagon." After all there's nothing innately celestial about a pointy five-pointed shape, it's just a geometric figure.

They also had a word for "stars" as in the celestial body: even though they couldn't see the third dimension, theoretical physicists measuring the effect of light on their world recognized the possibility that light emanated from a specific point outside of the visible world, in another dimension; and also the possibility that there were a multitude of diffuse weaker light sources that contributed minutely to the light they experienced.

They came up with words for "the primary singular source of most light" and "the multitudinous weak sources of the rest of light" that would be translated into English as "sun" and "stars," but in their own language they were considered terms for abstract unproven concepts. Like the way we use "graviton" and "dark matter" to describe thing physicists think might exist but haven't observed or proven.

Their words for "star [as in the shape]" and "star [as in the weak light source]" are completely unrelated. Bill did correctly figure out that the things he saw in the third dimension were the sun and the (light) stars, but he didn't associate the (shape) star with the celestial bodies.

Bill thinks it's kind of cute that humans named simple spirolateral pentagons after the distant light sources they see at night, even though the celestial stars don't look anything like that—either from the humans' perspective OR in actual fact. But he doubts they're gonna rename spheres "stars" now that their astronomy has advanced enough to know how stars really look. Still, the symbol they've named "star" is sorta romantic—gives the sense of something radiating out from a central point, like light from a star—kinda like how their "heart" symbol doesn't look like the organ but does look like two halves squishing together to form one whole. Visually poetic. Humans are good at that sort of stuff.

I'm so happy you liked the resident evil 8 Au! I totally agree that Miranda's new favorite is Mirabel (mostly because she has no obvious mutation and also partially because she's one of the few lords that isn't completely sterile I'm pretty sure most of them are Mirabel doesn't care but Miranda thinks it means she was a more perfect almost vessel and she is a physical embodiment of how far she's come) and I was thinking the same thing about her ability around moths and butterflies I was also thinking that she would be able to make her own silk kinda like a moth/butterfly and she can use the strands to cut like knives or simply make clothes depending on what she wants to do with it. I think the idea of the wings being dragonfly wings is amazing! I am imagining her true mutated form is very insectoid-like and she tries to keep it hidden from her family as much as possible. I agree that Miranda sprung it on her with her family showing up at random but I was thinking instead of Mirabel being the one to infect them it was Miranda or Miranda told her to do it because I feel like Mirabel thinks that she's cursed and is a monster for being what she is. I think their gifts go wonky like sometimes they work sometimes they don't think because it's protecting them from mutating. I think the relationship with Donna is spot on I don't think Monroe would try to manipulate Mirabel I feel like karl would do that a little more. I think also that Alcina at one point was fostering Mirabel when she was younger (only while her house was being built) so she saw her as another daughter until Miranda took her away which makes me think that she would be a little jealous of Julieta/entire family. 100% agree that in her mind her little portion of the village was like a miniature encanto and she treated it as such making hers the most prosperous and the most healthy area I imagine that she has a orphanage kind of near her house that she runs and keeps employed and stocked on things I imagined to try and keep loneliness at bay before her family showed up that she had maids she obviously has no extreme punishments for simple mistakes and allows them to frequently visit home and see their families and actually pays them well she of course is also forced to do experiments somewhere in the house like the other Lords and I think she has a basement specifically meant for that and she blocks the rest of her family from going to it. Speaking of the encanto I imagine that Miranda actually did a mass kidnapping to try and bolster the numbers in the village and to try and clean up a little bit of the bloodlines in the village. With the Ethan situation I think she would obviously try and petition for him to go to her house in the beginning but Miranda obviously does not allow it and she tries to help him as much as she can from the shadows until he gets to her house from there it went exactly how you put it.

Miranda forcing or honestly infecting the family herself would make sense. I imagine she tried to use the Madrigals as experiments, especially Antonio. And I wouldn't be surprised that of the villagers taken, Miranda just took a bunch of villagers to experiment on. Any that miraculously survived probably got dumped back into Mirabel's village. Which I'm glad you agree she thinks of as a Little Encanto <333 Mirabel HATES doing experiments, and especially after Julieta comes, does her best to heal the survivors and send them on their way. Her final form being insect like is so cool 👁👁 I can't draw monster to save my life, but I can attempt ❗❗ again, just a mixture of a multitude of bugs. No eyeballs. Idk what it is with Resident Evil and eyeballs, they freak me out EVERYTIME without fail. I think she rarely uses it; it's a lot small than the others forms, but still pretty decently sized. She definitely hides that side from her family, heck she probably hides it from herself 🥸

Also silly idea. Miranda did probably make Casita just. Collapse, I mean it's a house and it's MIRANDA. I imagine all of the Madrigals have some kind of injury from the event, and if they did, they tried to argue with Mother Miranda (despite Mirabel's protests) and learned the hard way that she doesn't tolerate stuff like that and "punushes" them. She doesn't kill them, because she know that would break little Mirabel's heart, so she keeps them alive, but essentially silwnces the Madrigals.

Lady D being jealous is so real 😭 yeah, she's got her own daughters, but there's something different about Mirabel. Maybe it's because she so small and cute, maybe ut's vecayse she got to actually play some role in actually raising her, I mean her three daughters were technically adults, and Mirabel was only a kid. I think the Dimitrescu sisters and Mirabel do get along to some degree, considering they're both somewhat bug related. But only so close 😀

Mirabel genuinely trying to care for her part of the village is sweet <33 she really does try and give these people the lives she knows they'll never truly have. She visits the orphanage several times a week. And despite how gloomy and decrepit the village it, Mirabel's just a little bit brighter. And Mirabel DEFINITELY tried to take Ethan. But Karl just had a bit more sway than her, and Miranda knows of Mirabel's habits of "letting people go". Mirabel knew better than to argue, so after she was reprimanded by Miranda, she piped down. Lady D hated Karl a little but more after that. Imagine how surprised Ethan is when he gets to her part of the village, and she just so easily gicws up the heart flask of Rose 😭 and Mirabel HELPS HIM. He trusts her more than the Duke probably 🗿 Maybe when Mirabel can't directly help him, she sends out her family members to deliver "packages" (typically it's just something to help heal or some spare ammo she had swiped from Karl).

These two books are wonderful companions that I highly recommend.

Wonderdog is the history of dog science, covering Darwin, Morgan, Pavlov, Skinner, Scott & Fuller, Miklósi, Hare, Bradshaw, Horowitz, Wynne and Berns (among others). It tracks the path of our understanding of what dogs are, how they work and where they fit.

The Secret History of Kindness follows another path. Starting with Skinner, it tracks the history of positive reinforcement training through the Brelands, Bailey, Pryor, Donaldson and ending up at Sidman. It's a different kind of read, but it spends a lot of time thinking out loud about how to understand dogs, how to treat them kindly, and what we need to change to do so.

One thing that really struck me when reading Holbrook Pierson's book was her stubbornness when it comes to love. I see this theme very commonly among dog trainers, their aversion to using the word love and their hesitation to apply it to dog behaviour. I share their skepticism, as we all know my thoughts about dog buttons, particularly their use of such an abstract term. And I used to harbour sharper thoughts about the topic, but I've since softened. What does it matter either way? I love my dogs, and the behaviour they show to me may as well be love. I'm not afraid of it, of its authenticity, of its depth, of anything.

While Howard comes at the topic of love from a similarly scientific perspective, he comes to the conclusion that it may as well be love. Wynne, the author of Dog is Love (currently reading), fully argues the point. There is a lot of evidence to support the idea: brain hormones, separation distress, heartbeat, MRI scans and ethological observation.

This is enough for these men, why isn't is enough for Holbrook Pierson? My guess is the gender thing. Knapp covered this in her exquisite book Pack of Two. Women get judged more for showing love to animals. Their feelings are routinely diminished, their behaviour ridiculed. I can't help but feel that Holbrook Pierson is holding back, not allowing herself to fully accept the idea of a dog's love. She wrote, "...being successful as a positive-reinforcement trainer depends on leaving the lovely messiness, the hopes and expectations, the merged emotions, the story line of love, out of the matter entirely." I simply don't agree. I contain multitudes, and so do my dogs.

These two books have been some of the best I've read in my ongoing self-education around dogs. They are excellent histories of dog science: thoughtful, nuanced and very enriching.

Zhan Zhuang: Standing Meditation

The body of the average modern human being has become a dysregulated, disconnected mess of weakness, tightness, tension, chronic pain, and numbness.

In a word, imbalanced.

Some of that may be an inescapable aspect of our mortal form, such as a chronic disease or permanent injury, which then must be accepted and accommodated. But in many other instances, this poor state of the body is a result of our own misuse and neglect.

How often do you simply stand? Not leaning one way or the other, not shifting your weight from foot to foot, not contorting your posture around a mobile phone or heavy bag.

A multitude of people work office jobs or are students of rigorous academics and they will spend many hours sitting. During the first year of the pandemic, when most people were staying at home, I found myself sitting or lounging all the time.

It was during the pandemic that I first began to practice Zhan Zhuang, Standing Like a Tree.

As I have begun standing for very long surgeries, I have made an effort to return to this practice daily. It has made an immense difference.

Zhan Zhuang

The premise of this standing practice is simple.

You stand. You breathe. And that's it.

There are some finer points to the posture, which should be integrated as one acclimates to the practice.

One can imagine how this develops a sense of being both grounded and centered. And it needn't be a long session. I have been doing 5-10 minutes with amazing results.

Beneath this deceptively simple practice, a profound shift unfolds over time. The body re-organizes itself in relation to the axis of gravity and in doing so it also pulls the body into a naturally harmonious alignment.

Standing Meditation

So you may ask yourself: does this count as meditation?

My answer would be: it depends. It can be!

I would categorize this practice as somatic meditation. This means that if you are engaging your conscious attention with the physical sensation of the body as a whole and breathing silently with it, then it is a meditation practice.

If you are doing this while watching TV or something, it is still good for the body but I would not call it meditation.

Qi

Lastly, standing practice is also a beneficial method for discovering, gathering, and aligning qi.

Qi is something I have been exploring these days as part of my foray into somatic spirituality. I have yet to alight on a plain English translation that I really like. Qi has been called many different things previously: vital force, spirit, or simply energy. It seems to be very similar to the yogic concept of prana. Both are vital forces that relate to organic systems.

I am thinking "vital energy" may be a sufficient term, as it is distinct from even more subtle forms of energy spoken of within various occult/spiritual paradigms.

Regardless, I will be writing more about qi and somatic spirituality in the future. That said, standing meditation is a good fundamental practice with a number of benefits. Give it a try!

My nephew is agitated, he just read an article that said people in the old kingdom believed only Pharaohs (through their connection to Osiris) had the ability to be reborn in the afterlife, and it wasn't until later that normal people thought they could also enter the afterlife, kicking off the burial and death preparations business.

I honestly can't think of a good source to give him that say anything about this one way or another- Any ideas? (thank you, stay well)

Uhhh that's a little complicated and I think there's been some wires crossed. There'd be no source I know of that I could give him, mostly because without knowing his age/level of understanding, most of the sources I have would probably be too high level or the wrong sort of information. There's a knowledge difference between a 7 year old and a 16 year old, and giving a source is sort of reliant on that. There's also not a single source I can provide on the topic, since the information is spread out over numerous books/articles and most of these would be out of a lay person's knowledge level. Here's a list of sources on Old Kingdom tombs and burial practices to get the gist of what I mean. Depending on his age, and level of understanding, some of those may be appropriate.

In the Old Kingdom, burial practices for the King and for the people were entirely different. The King dies, is reborn like Osiris to live among the gods and rises as Horus to the solar barque to join Ra to sail across the sky and fight Apep in the Duat every night. This is told through the funerary texts known as the Pyramid Texts, and basically reinforces the the idea of 'King as Sun God on Earth' and 'the King is Osiris in death' that was how the Pharaoh was perceived by the people at this point. The Pyramid Texts are where we get some of the earliest mentions of the Osiris myth, and it really does belong solely to the king at this point. As things developed in later periods, many of the texts that were reserved for the Pharaoh upon his death filtered down into regular use by everyone else and became known as the Coffin Texts. By the time we reach the New Kingdom, the remnants of the Pyramid Texts are being used in the tombs of Nobles and we have things like the Book of the Dead.

However, during the Old Kingdom the king really is the only one who can be born again like Osiris. This is because Osiris himself is the embodiment of a dead and renewed king who lives on among the gods. In life, the King is the embodiment of Horus, and in death he is the embodiment of Osiris. He contains multitudes, and there's a lot of mythology I'd have to go through to explain how it all connects unfortunately but the Osiris myth (Osiris' death and rebirth and Horus' ascension to the throne) and the Destruction of Mankind (Ra's kingship and ascension to the solar barque upon 'death') play key roles. Abydos is Osiris' cult centre, and where a major temple to him was erected. This is also where the earliest Egyptian kings are buried due to their wish to be close to Osiris and be restored as Osiris was. It really was only for the King until the start of the Middle Kingdom when Egypt had gone through the First Intermediate Period full of infighting and fracture, that the rebirth as an Osiris in the afterlife became the purview of everyone else.

For the rest of the general population in the Old Kingdom, Nobles and Peasants alike, there was the preservation of the body to be exist in the afterlife, and receive offerings from the living to maintain that afterlife. People are mummified and buried with burial goods as they have been since the Pre-Dynastic period, though the accessibility of the afterlife seems to change from the Pre-Dynastic (high status got the afterlife) to the Old Kingdom (everyone gets the afterlife in some form or another). This is where we get the stone False Door being introduced into tombs, so that the Ba of the deceased could come back and receive the offerings. However, these are for noble tombs only, and most Egyptians are buried with a few grave goods in a hole in the ground. They've got an afterlife, but it's not the same afterlife as the king.

I guess the best thing I can tell you to do is to look up the Pyramid Texts, the Osiris myth, and Abydos (wiki is fine for all of these), which should give him an idea of how it functioned for the King. For burial practices of everyone else, there's not a huge amount of information available that's suitable for a lay audience. You can look up False Doors here. Lastly, the only thing I can say is that Egypt as a civilisation was around for millennia and what is true for one period might not hold true for another period. We generalise Ancient Egyptian beliefs a lot because there's a) so much of it that it's hard to explain all the changes to a lay audience, b) it lasts for such a long time that it's easier to say 'they just did this' as a starting point, and then as you dig deeper you find out that it varies a lot from king to king, period to period, and place to place.

I hugely think it depends on how you want to imagine the situation. When I am trying to piece him together in a situation that does not cause him to be provoked the way he was in Ray Route, I look at V Route as my staple example of what to expect. He's wild, hard to lock down, but one thing is for certain, he's curious about you and he will learn what makes you tick, one way or another.

He doesn't have a reason to lash out at you in that situation, and he wouldn't have a reason to do so in the assistant route. Ray wasn't put in the basement for turning against Mint Eye, and therefore, he didn't wake up there with the instinctual reaction to attack and defend. In a situation where you're the assistant, you're not going to encounter his attitude the same way.

You're an interesting plaything, you are Ray's little dress up doll. You could be a nuisance, you could get in his way, or you could benefit him. There's really no wrong way to imagine it. More than anything, I can see him wanting to pick you apart. A plaything he wants to figure out more than anything else. What makes you tick? What makes you squirm? Can he get something out of being close to you like Ray? Or, are you terrified by him? Would you prefer Ray?

He wants to know what makes you important and why the hell Ray would kidnap you in the first place. What makes you so special? Why would Ray do all of this for you? What's the benefit in putting their safety at risk just to be with you? Is it worth all the trouble? Are you worth the trouble? Can you do anything that will help them take over the RFA or did Ray just intends to keep you at his side?

What's the end goal?

Hell, what's the main goal?

It's not as if he's going to corner you like prey. There is no purpose in doing that because he is not in a situation where he needs to blame you for everything bad that's happened to him and Ray.

You could be a nuisance to him if you get in the way of his work that needs to be done, but I don't think he's going to treat you with the animosity that you see in other situations. Even in those situations, while he's not in the right, most of his actions can be understood as him doing everything he can within his power to make things right, but the only way for him to do that is to be cruel and it defeats the purpose.

Him locking you away in your room being, in part, him knowing that he is the lesser of all evils compared to the other believers. His choice to deny you food, while 100% wrong, does have some basis in being from the fact that he and Ray have been poisoned with food plenty of times, more times than he can count, actually. Him trying to belittle you in front of Rika is another ploy, too. He knows Rika already made up her mind on you, but it doesn't stop him from trying.

His reaction to when that inevitably happens in an assistant situation may look similar, but how he responds will be different.

The circumstantial evidence as to what he will do in a different situation is hard to pin down, but if you take what you have seen him do in other situations, we can kind of wager a few guesses as to what will happen when things go wrong.

But if you're asking me what he'll do before something goes wrong and it seems to be going in his and Ray's favor, that's hard to say. It depends on what kind of person you are, how you respond to what happened to you, and a multitude of other factors.

The MC in the Prologue’s Bad Ending resigns themself to staying with Ray because… “He’s sad… but I’m certain he won’t hurt me.” They stay with him because they know he's lonely, they empathize with that, and all they want to do is to provide him with… kindness.

I have always imagined that this MC is down on their luck and doesn't have a lot of good in their life and despite everything, Ray is one of the first people that’s shown them kindness in a long time, and they decide to stick with him. Even if what he did was wrong and they can acknowledge that, they understand that he's not the true evil in this situation, and even though he should be held accountable for what he's done, seeing what he's living through makes them understand that the situation is far more complex than it appears at first glance.

Suit Saeran is a wild card.

I can narrow down what he'll do sometimes and other times I'm not sure what he would do. I hope this fills in some of the blanks for you at the very least.

OHHHH this is such a good question okay okay okay. let's see.

what do i look for? primarily, kon having an actual character voice. that's the lowest bar to clear (and yet already takes out... a good chunk of the fics ive seen in the kon character tag 😭😭). he needs to be silly, geeky, deeply kind, earnest, etc. not every fic featuring him will necessarily get into the way he's also existentially lonely and has a Lot of sadness and self-esteem issues (esp after rex leech's roller coaster incident. this has been on my mind today. ough. his self-image never recovered after that one!) but by GOD does he have his issues, so if its a fic going into emotions i want it to do right by his. will def admit thats smth im incredibly picky about.

as for stuff i want him doing? honestly i am here for so much!! i want soft simple character studies. i want action showcasing how fucking powerful ttk can be, especially with a dose of creativity to its use. i want wacky yj space adventures. i want good good whump and hurt/comfort. i want him getting swept off his feet. you could sell me on almost any plot if it's well-written.

re: characteristics... i don't really split them up quite like that, i think! he's a well-rounded character, and that includes both strengths and flaws. ideally, a good fic will include both of these and represent them fairly (like, he's not perfect by any means, and he can do stupid things and struggle with personal issues, but on the other hand very few things tick me off more than portrayals where he's just completely incompetent and dumb as a rock, lmao).

BUT REGARDING MY OWN WRITING. ohhohoohoohooho three things i ALWAYS have to include? a) geek-ass loser (affectionate). i think it is SO endearing and also very humanizing as a quality that he's a trekkie/wendy fan/star wars nerd/etc. b) mixed-race metaphors. they may not be overt depending on the piece but the "child of two worlds that doesn't quite fit into either" thing is Deeply intentional. and c) HES A JUGGERNAUT!!!! i firmly believe adult fully realized kon (a kryptonian, with full kryptonian powers, WITH TTK) is a force of fucking nature. i like this so much and i specifically also always like it when he is at any given moment about 0.4 seconds from freaking the fuck out about how it's Too much strength.

to me, kon is a character made of some very delicious contradictions. he's so painfully human and yet grapples hard with his own personhood and humanity. he's a kryptonian and an alien but he's a child of earth. he's terrified of his own power. he wants nothing more than to protect everyone he loves (and everyone he doesn't love, too). he's always ready to crack a joke or make a silly reference, but he is deeply sad and spent so much of his early life suicidal. he contains multitudes. (and this isn't even getting into my hcs on his gender/sexuality crisis! ksjdhf)

i feel like a gripe i often find myself having when looking for kon fics is that he often gets slotted into the role of "emotional support boyfriend with no personality or role of his own" though, which i guess is why "does he have a distinct character voice?" is my first litmus test for whether i'd want to keep reading or not.

a good kon fic will embrace all his contradictions, i think. (a good fic for any character, really, should show them as well-rounded and three-dimensional.) and i for one love his Problems and Issues, bc man, it's a very fun space to play in! <3
