It used to be so lovely yet so difficult when Max would say hello to or congratulate Charles in the paddock. Lovely because it was Max sparing Charles a moment of time to give him one of his crinkly-eyed smiles plus a few words with that delicious raspy voice of his. Difficult because he would also put a hand somewhere on Charles in the process - a firm grasp of Charles’ arm, a squeeze to the back of his neck, a clasp of the shoulder - and it took everything in Charles not to close his eyes and lean in to the touch or follow it when it retreated.

And times when Charles was top three in quali with Max? Or even better (worse?) sharing a podium? Those were the sweetest torture of all.
