Modern AU headcanon that I may or may not use in my modern AU series:
20s Raya still sleeps with a Build-A-Bear that her mother helped her make for her 5th birthday. After her mother dies, that bear is with her every night. When Raya meets Namaari, at first she's embarrassed. Namaari is way too cool for stuffed animals. But Raya just can't bear to part with her teddy.
Then Namaari stays the night for the first time, and Raya is stressed. What is she gonna do? Eventually she decides to just tell her. If Namaari mocks her, she'll probably just laugh it off, but she'll secretly be super disappointed and heartbroken.
But Namaari thinks it's the cutest thing, and when she learns why Raya sleeps with the teddy, she's very understanding. She shakes the teddy's worn out little paw and says "Sorry bud, but you're going to have to share her now. I'm sure we can come to an agreement."
And when she gives Raya a goodnight kiss that night, she kisses the teddy, too. And Raya instantly knows she's the one she's going to marry.
-
Then one day, they're out walking around the mall together and they pass a Build-A-Bear. Namaari catches Raya looking wistfully inside and asks if she wants to go in. Raya blushes and declines, but Namaari can see just how much she wants to and insists.
Cue impromptu date where they make teddies together and Namaari is 1000% into it, having had a strict childhood and not had a stuffed animal since she was eleven. Each girl gives the other bear's heart a kiss before its sewn in to the stuffing. They get them cute little T-shirts and name them, and that night Namaari's teddy sleeps right next to her pillow.
Raya makes a whole scene of new teddy meeting old teddy and they instantly become best friends. And the new teddy will NEVER replace the old teddy, but rather, add to Raya's collection of gifts from the most important women in her life.

Namaari headcanons pt.1
Since i'm taking a break from ao3 and i had this draft quite in my head lately, I've decided to use some of my spare time to write some hcs that i will definitely explore in the future during my college break:
There is this one peculiar orphanage/daycare in all of kumandra (built around a few months after the events of the movie), the only one that accepts and looks after children with mixed origins (half-spine,half-fang, etc..) as well as the mentally/physically disabled little ones. Sadly but as expected, they are often the target of supremacists groups and bigoted people who not only seek to chase the “dirty offspring” but to exterminate every single one of them for the sake of ”keeping the nations purified”. Namaari, being the ‘friend of all children’ we know she is, takes it as her duty to defend those kids as well as scare those binturis away, helping the settlement with the jade from her own pockets, providing toys, games, medication and other resources. She makes sure all kids have returned to their homes safe and sound. Just imagine this big softie running and playing with the little ones. (Tong goes with Namaari as well, they always try to win him with the tug of war).
I hold it in my heart that Namaari is secretly an aunt with at least one surviving big brother/sister and an adorable nephew.
Namaari’s father, the fallen chief of Fang, unfortunately passed away when Namaari was only 8 due to the pestilence that plagued Fang, wiping down one third of it’s population, including a big part of Namaari’s family members, relatives and other loved ones.
Noi and her ongis share a very sweet and strong friendship with Namaari, so strong Noi obeys and listens to either Tong or Namaari only, both are often seen playing catch with Noi easily fooling Namaari. Often times, she’s seen bouncing between Namaari’s head and Tong’s shoulders
Sisu takes Namaari to the hot springs of Heart as one of their favorite things to do together, as well as skydiving along with her brothers and sisters, which absolute makes Namaari’s day a lot better.
Namaari has a small room just around the corner of her own bedroom that is full of her most precious belongings, from the fang children’s drawings to the tapestries full of dragons and scrolls full of dragon myths and fables.
Tong has carved wooden figurines of his friends, though Namaari has at least 5 or 6 of her. Why so many you ask? Tong never gets her undercut right, he always forget that her undercut is on the right side, not on the left.
Let’s all agree that Namaari is the type of woman who looks like she spends most of her time in the Fang library and the training grounds.
Initial distrust now gone, Tong and Namaari are partners-in-arms, drinking-buddies (not really, Tong chugs lots of rice wine while Namaari sticks to a fine grape wine), close like family, she also becomes his son’s godmother under Tong and his wife’s request at some point.
When Tong finds out that Namaari lost her father for good, he slowly starts to act more fatherly and attentive towards her, at first she’s terrified and immediately scurries away due to years of having to hold the fate of Fang in her shoulders alongside her mother, but slowly accepts his paternal embrace.
Namaari learned the basics of sewing and woodcarving with Tong by the way.
If guilt and trust-issues weren’t as bad enough, Namaari suffers with abandonment-issues and a big amount of unresolved grief. Those barely visible ”wrinkles” under her eyes we’ve seen in the movie might have been caused by the countless nights without sleep, possibly filled with tears as well. Out of concern for her daughter’s well-being, Virana “orders” Namaari to visit the healer’s hut for therapy at least twice a week.
The reason Boun likes Namaari the most, which i also agree, is that she doesn’t treat him like a kid, but an equal.
When Boun returns to school in Tail, he starts to get harassed by older and larger classmates, at first the harassment was only verbal but it did took a small toll on his mental health and the bullying became so frequent it started to get physical.
Both Namaari and Boun started to practice various styles of martial arts and physical exercise, from grappling and striking to sword-fighting and advanced weapon techniques. To train his coordination and focus, Namaari also started teaching Boun archery.
Namaari and Boun also enjoy cooking and baking together, as well as singing and dancing while at it. Namaari gave Boun a secret recipe book of dishes and appetizers that was a gift from her maternal grandfather to her.
Raya and Namaari have grown close surprisingly fast, both apologizing for the bad things they’ve done to one another, eagerly and relieved to finally put the past behind them, which was something Raya wanted more than anything since the beginning.
Both girls go camping after diplomatic travels.
Raya is ALWAYS the one initiating physical touch with Namaari, even before they start dating.
When Raya and Namaari finally get together, Raya gets even more physically intimate with Namaari, such as kissing her shoulder blades, threading her fingers on Namaari’s scalp all the way to her undercut, nuzzling her neck in broad daylight. Raya is definitely the type to kiss Namaari out of nowhere and absolutely adores brushing their noses together every time she does it.
Everyone, specially Tong and Raya, playfully ruffle Namaari’s undercut, much to her annoyance.

Rayaari pregnancy headcanons for the soul:
Namaari was the one to bring up the idea of kids a couple years after they got married
She’s always known she wanted a kid or two
Raya was pretty apprehensive to the idea at first, mainly because she lacked a mother figure growing up and was worried she’d be a bad mom because of it
(Boun and Noi softened her up to the idea because she loves them more than she likes to admit)
After much reassurance, Raya was on board on the condition that they would only have one
Namaari was more than okay with that
So they started looking into adoption for obvious reasons but they’re a little sad they can’t have a child together that’s 100% theirs
Raya mentioned it to Sisu one day so then Sisu was like “oh don’t even stress we have magic for this very reason! We’ve helped plenty of same sex couples have bio kids before the Druun”
Raya brought it up to Namaari and she was all for it
They ultimately decided Raya would carry the pregnancy. A big reason is because of how much of a workaholic Namaari is
When Raya actually becomes pregnant Namaari is SO supportive but she is also SO protective. Like Raya simply does not leave Namaari’s sight
Raya winced one time because the baby kicked and Namaari sprinted her down to the emergency room
“MOVE BINTURIS MY WIFE IS IN PAIN” “can you maybe chill babe-“
Namaari is a worried wife
Raya also experienced INTENSE mood swings
She will go from laughing to crying to murderous to apologetic in the span of three minutes
Namaari is very good at soothing her
“Maari? I’m sorry for, ahem, threatening to shove you off a five story building” “Oh don’t worry about it, it’s like we were teens again. I enjoyed it very much”
Namaari telling Raya how beautiful she is 24/7
“Why are you staring at me, you freak?” “Because you’re the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen” “I’m the size of a planet” “I know what I said”
Raya gets very irritated when she can’t do things she typically would. Not being able to train slowly drives her insane
“I WANNA PUNCH SOMETHING! I WANNA SWING MY SWORDS” “Raya you are in your third trimester DONT SWING SWORDS”
The serlots become Raya’s bodyguards. She is the queen of the kitties
Tuk Tuk gets annoyed that other animals follow Raya around like cmon he was there first
During the actual birth Raya cusses Namaari out so hard
“I SWEAR TO GOD IF THIS BABY INHERITED YOUR BIG ASS HEAD I AM RUNNING AWAY TO JOIN THE CIRCUS” “Okay, that’s fair, I completely understand”
(Benja had a really hard time in the delivery room because it reminded him too much of when his wife was in labour but he stuck through it)
It was long and difficult, but they both ended up being okay
Everyone in the room was crying
Namaari was probably crying more than anyone tbh
“I just- I’m- I can’t” “There there, dep la. There there”
Raya held her first and then she started crying more too
“I was so worried that she was going be born with like 18 fingers and 23 toes. She’s actually really cute for a baby that was just born” “We do have superior genes”
They’re a happy family that love each other very much!

Rayaari headcanon, because they live rent-free in my brain:
Raya loves to touch Namaari's face when they kiss.
This has led to her accidentally knocking Namaari's earring off several times.
After being alone for so long, Raya is used to having conversations with herself. Sometimes Namaari will walk in on Raya having loud arguments with no-one. Over time, these conversations (and arguments) are between the two of them instead.
Namaari is actually the more ‘huggy’ of the two, although she would never admit it.
Raya is the one more likely to grab Namaari’s hand though, especially mid-conversation without even realizing. Namaari always notices, and clings on tightly.
Raya is shocked at how many people Namaari "knows" by name in Fang. But this is thanks to her duties as Princess; Namaari doesn't have any actual friends.
Namaari is usually the more reserved personality out of the two. But if you ask her a question on dragons, she gets into a nerdy rant where her eyes light up and her hands gesture wildly.
Raya likes to drag them off on questionable "adventures". Namaari likes to complain that they are too silly or dangerous, but when they actually go on said adventure, she is always right next to Raya.
They get into trouble often (Raya says it isn’t her fault; Namaari disagrees).
Namaari is definitely a cat lady. She hardly ever shirks her duty, but when she is desperate for some peace and quiet, she can probably be found napping on one of their fluffy backs.
The cats growl at anyone who tries to disturb her (except Raya).
Raya gets annoyed by her long hair during sparring, but doesn’t know how to deal with it. Eventually, Benja teaches Namaari how to do lovely braids in Raya's hair.

I’m running out of ways to title headcanons
Raya doesn't keep time very well and will constantly be late, where Namaari is hyper aware of time and is always early. The two of them balance out really well because Namaari will make sure Raya will be on time but raya helps alleviate Namaari’s anxiety so she doesnt show up 30 minutes early.
There was one time though that the two of the got carried away swimming and doing ..other things, and they were 15 minutes late to a dinner with both their parents. Namaari had a panic attack but tried not to show that she was having one.
She got tunnel vision and got onto her serlot and made them run as fast as they could, leaving Raya behind
When Raya showed up at the dinner five minutes later she was clearly not happy but saw how much of a wreck being late made Namaari
Meanwhile Namaari was apologizing profusely while trying to maintain some level of calm
Benja just looks at Raya and nods so she takes Namaari to her bedroom to calm down
Namaari barely takes any time before she says she’s ready to go back in but Raya forces her to just sit and breathe. Raya pulls her into a hug and runs her fingers through Namaari’s hair until she’s actually calm
Both Benja and Virana are super patient and don’t mind the wait. Virana rests her hand on Namaari’s shoulder when she sits down and tells her not to worry

Raya and Namaari really spent a lot of time in the film staring at each other. Every land they go to and each time they meet they just keep gazing at each other's eyes. Friends turned to enemies without romantic feelings for each other won’t do that.

Raya and Namaari are sapphics and they're in love

Okay new headcanon I came up with while drinking my morning coffee.
Raya has some serious issues with how she enters a body of water after her Ba threw her in to save her from the druun. She loves the water and can swim well but she despises being forced into it when it’s not on her terms and triggers PTSD whenever it happens.
Imagine one day the gang is all hanging out and chillin in Heart, and Raya’s sunbathing on the land while the group is playing in the water. They’re trying to get her to go in and she’s just not having it, wanting to stay dry. Sisu (or maybe the Ongi’s) somehow get her close enough to the edge that they push her in and everyone has a good laugh as she shrieks before she disappears below the surface but the laughter dies quickly as she comes up for air, truly panicking. She’s thrashing and flailing, treading water but not truly swimming to shore and so Tong tries to help her, but she just panics more at the touch of another person.
She eventually makes it to the shore and bolts away before anyone knows what happened. Namaari goes looking for her later and finds her still huddled in her wet clothes in the temple of the dragon gem. They sit together and after a while, Raya finally opens up to Namaari about what happened the night the druun returned, how she was swept away by the river, how she struggled just to keep her head above water, clutching close to the sword, the gem, and Tuk Tuk, how she spent the night cold and bone weary from swimming.
She finishes her tale exhausted, refusing to go back to the river afterwards but meeting her friends for dinner on Boun’s boat. The gang does try to apologize, which she of course accepts and they never try to make Raya get in the water again, only trying to splash or dunk her when she wants to be in the water

rayaari headcanons because i’m still thinking about them 💜
Namaari is one inch taller than Raya and she constantly lords it over her and calls Raya short
Because of the lack of abundance in Fang, Namaari cannot cook at all and relies on Raya for food
Raya tried teaching her to cook, but Namaari just wound up spilling boiling water and burning herself
Namaari attempts to adopt every child that she sees. Raya doesn't know what to do with them and tries to discuss politics
Namaari will sometimes just pick up Raya and bridal carry her around
Raya's gotten used to it at this point and she'll just like, read or eat
Raya is a lot more flirty than Namaari. She tends to say things just to fluster Namaari
It works. And Namaari hates it
Namaari is a lot more blunt with her emotions
She used to be repressed™️ and tried to hide her feelings for Raya, but she's done with that now
They still call each other dep'la, but now they mean it
They also still call each other binturi. Mostly ironically whenever one of them compliments the other and they don't know how to handle it. It's a running joke
you can send me requests here!

Ok so as someone who lost a family member, let me tell you like one of the biggest fears (at least for me) is that you’ll forget the little things about that person. So you make lists and you have to constantly remind yourself about the facts you can remember about them, and just, I can so imagine Raya, after months in the woods alone, not remembering something small, something like what her dad’s favorite book was.
She has a basic idea, two or three that she thinks it can be, but the uncertainty, the fact she she can’t just ask him and be sure, has her near catatonic. She can’t believe it, she feels like she’s forgetting him already, and she has to convince herself that he’s not really gone so it’s ok. She’s ok. She’ll get to ask him again just as soon as she finds Sisu and brings everyone back.
But after that, she keeps a journal. A small little inconspicuous book that she uses to keep track of all his favorite things that she can remember, his favorite jokes, little sayings, special moments she can remember them sharing together.
And after everyone is back and Raya’s back to living with her Ba in Heart, she still keeps it with her because it’s one of the most important things that she owns. It’s always in her pocket or in her bag, and one day she gets ambushed by baby Noi or something when they come to visit and she doesn’t notice it slipping out of her bag, but Benja does.
He doesn’t know what it is, but he figures she’ll want it back so he goes to pick it up for her. It landed open to a random page, and he really doesn’t mean to read it but his eyes glance over a small excerpt about a day that he kind of remembers and he pauses:
“Remember when he took you to Tinago falls he and helped teach you how to scale a waterfall and you both sat at the top and the water made a rainbow and you said that the rainbow made the day perfect, and then he said that it was perfect because he was spending it with you”
And after that he can’t stop reading.
“Remember when you both raided the kitchen for butter cookies and you got caught but he distracted the cook for you and you managed to slip away and then you both ate them together in the garden. Note: Have a garden picnic when you get him back”
“His favorite color is yellow, but not orangey-yellow like a sunset, the bright kind like the inside of a fresh lemon”
“His favorite animal is the sunbird because he likes how colorful it is”
But then he notices that the language changes.
“His favorite folktale was the Locust and the Ant because he liked that it was about hard work”
“His favorite instrument was the butting Bamboo violin. The Bamboo violin. I think. Because he liked that-”
“His favorite food was Bulalo.”
“He loved...”
“Remember when...”
“He once said...”
And it goes on and on like that for pages. Facts about himself that he didn’t even ever notice. Towards the end, the entries get shorter and the information inside is sometimes wrong. He’s almost at the last page when he sees Raya come sprinting back toward him, eyes frantically sweeping the ground as if she were looking for something, before her eyes meet his and she freezes.
By now, tears are streaming down his face and he’s having a hard time breathing and she slowly walks up to him and stands shyly, almost ashamedly, in front of him.
“I was-” she starts with a stutter, “I was afraid I’d forget”
And then he realizes, she thinks he’s upset because she needed a list to remember him. That he’s hurt because it made him feel like he wasn’t important enough to just remember.
She opens her mouth again, and knowing his daughter, it’s to apologize, but before she can speak, he wraps her in the tightest hug he can, arms shaking and tears still streaming down his face. He knows that there’s still so much that they need to work through together, so much they still need to talk about.
But for now. For now he just wants her to know that he’s here.

Rayaari family headcanons for funsies:
(Raya kept freaking out that Aulia would be some mutant half dragon baby because of the dragon magic and was super relieved when she ended up being a completely normal human)
Raya was so nervous about being a mom but her and Aulia became literal besties immediately
Aulia wrapped her whole hand around Raya’s finger when she was like five minutes old and Raya knew she would die for that baby
Namaari absolutely adored Aulia the second she knew about her
Namaari will be holding baby Aulia and then just start crying because of how happy she is
She is so excited to be a mom
AULIA’S FIRST WORD IS BINTURI
Aulia popped out the womb looking like Namaari and Raya was SO pissed
Raya punches Namaari every time someone says Aulia looks like her
Aulia snores just like Raya does and it brings Namaari so much joy (both Raya and Aulia claim they don’t snore)
Aulia has the most lethal puppy dog eyes in all of Kumandra
She got them from Raya. It’s really the only physical similarity people can see
Everyone hoped Benja had built up an immunity to the puppy eyes, but he is a weak man. Even Virana can’t say no to her grandbaby
The only person that is resistant is Raya
“Cmon Ma, pretty please?” “Oh put those eyes away. You’re very cute, I can’t lie, but I know those eyes. I invented those eyes” “Worth a shot”
Basically the only reason why Aulia hasn’t accomplished world domination is Raya
When Namaari is faced with the eyes she has to look away in order to not succumb to her child’s adorable face
If Raya and Aulia work together by using their puppy dog eyes at the same time it’s over for Namaari she has no choice but to give them whatever their heart’s desire
Aulia was a chaotic child that mellowed out in her teen years
That girl was on the MOVE
She wanted to do everything all the time at all hours of the day
Aulia inherited the dragon nerd gene
For a short period of time, if she owned something without a dragon on it it was shoved in a closet
Dragons ONLY
Aulia loves Sisu so much and Sisu was just so excited when Aulia was born
They’re the dream team
Benja and Virana would argue all the time over who gets to watch Aulia
“Uh, you got her yesterday, today is my turn” “Is one day truly enough time with this absolute angel?” “Guys please she is not a toy”
Aulia is the favorite of everyone
“Hey Ma! We’re here!” “Namaari, you’re blocking my baby, move it”
Aulia is unintentionally the sassiest child ever created
Raya has to walk away so that her child doesn’t see her laughing her ass off
Namaari loves telling Aulia stories
She even acts them out to entertain Aulia
They’re just some cutie pies living the good life

Rayaari headcanon - let's explore canon domestic fluff
(Inspired by a lovely anon)
After Raya and Namaari have obviously been dating for a while, Virana and Benja put their heads together and agree to a split schedule, where the girls can stagger their time between six months in Heart and six months in Fang, with the bonus of learning more about each others' culture.
At first, Namaari feels incredibly guilty about being away from her people for multiple weeks at a time. But then Raya says 'Well, when we're married, Heart will also be your people', which makes Namaari simultaneously panic because now she will have so many more people to protect, and also flush red, because Raya mentioned marriage so casually.
Namaari tends to be perpetually working whenever they are in Fang, and most of the time Raya is dragged along for the various Princess duties also. She finds half of them incredibly boring, but whenever Namaari asks if she'd rather go and do something else in the meantime, Raya always refuses and pretends it is Very Interesting Work. In reality, she just likes to spend time with Namaari, regardless of what they are doing.
In exchange, Raya demands they stop for lunch every day, so they can sit and talk with each other for a while without interruption. Namaari is banned from discussing anything to do with her duties during this time.
At the end of the day, when they can finally relax, Namaari sometimes sneaks a serlot kitten or two into her bedroom, and they spend the evening playing hide and seek with tiny balls of fluff.
Namaari's bedroom is devoid of any furniture besides her ridiculously large bed, and some plants. Raya likes to tease her about both the size of her bed, and lack of home decor. She is however vaguely impressed when Namaari leads her into a small side room where her actual clothes and, more importantly, her jewelry is kept.
At night, they share this extremely large bed, and despite having as much space as they could possibly want, they always end up curled together in the middle.
When they are staying in Heart, meanwhile, Raya is often the more stressed of the two. There are a lot of responsibilities now expected of her, and yet she feels she doesn't know how to be either a Princess or a leader. She was always more enthused about being a Guardian of the Gem when she was younger, rather than with her royal duties, and that hasn't changed in the interim years.
Sometimes, Namaari patiently coaches her through expected political tasks or endless paperwork. Other times, Benja clearly wants to teach his daughter certain cultural or leadership insights, and for this, Namaari spirits herself away for a few hours to give them privacy. Afterwards, Raya will often find her entertaining a group of children, or helping with the ongoing rebuilding.
Raya likes to go for walks in the evening when they are in Heart. They take strolls during dusk hours, finding different pathways that will lead them away from civilization to open fields and silence. They lie in the grass and gaze up at the sky as the first stars of the night begin to shine.
They spar more often in Heart - especially for Raya to let out her frustrations regarding her daily tasks. So at the end of the day, they often help each other massage out their tired muscles, or rub cream into bruised areas.
Regardless of which land they are in, they have a nighttime routine that follows a similar pattern.
Once they are both in bed, they sit and talk in the dark for a while, usually with Namaari running her fingers through Raya's hair to tease out any last knots left by Raya's haphazard combing technique.
Raya can have problems falling asleep, despite being the one to feel tired first, soothed by her hair being touched. She asks to hear Namaari's voice as she drops off to sleep, so Namaari will softly tell her a story about the dragons, allowing her words to reassure Raya that she is not alone.
Namaari doesn't have the same struggle as Raya in falling asleep, but she wakes often during the night, plagued by nightmares. When this happens, she shuffles backwards until their bodies touch, and then lifts Raya's arm and places it around her waist.
Raya hugs her closer without waking up, and tucks her nose against her shoulder blade. They remain in the same position until morning.
