Boomlords weird adventure
Chapter 12 A very cold day(warning some of the chapters and concepts might be a bit dark)
Rainbow Dash was still playing with her new blades while Finn reached into his backpack and started wrapping pieces of discarded felt together to make her a makeshift sheath. With everyone settled in on Jake Twilight began to notice before anyone else the air is getting colder as the Green landscape started to disappear."it's getting kind of chilly out here."Twilight complained leaning into Finn and Boomlord who had both already put on comfortable cold clothes. Finn was wearing his classic tan sweater which he had pulled out around the same time the temperature started dropping and boom already was wearing a jacket however he had pulled two sets of gloves out of the satchel handing one over to Twilight."here I got you."Twilight quickly took the glove and put them on rubbing her shoulders.Boom noticed she was still pretty cold and not wanting her to suffer he started to unzip his jacket.Finn eyes widen as he saw Boom do this as he had never actually seen boom take his jacket off for someone. Truth is Boom didn't usually take it off regardless of temperature."here twi try to stay warm."placed the jacket over her which she quickly accepted putting it on. Gave her a nice view of his actual body. He was still on the skinnier side but with notable muscle and wore a dark black T-shirt with a skull on it."won't you get cold."she asked looking slightly concerned."don't worry about me I don't... I don't get affected by weather that much anymore one of the few benefits of my abilities."she gave a shy smile to him that would make Fluttershy proud. Boom then looked over to Dash with Twi focusing on keeping warm. Dash looks perfectly fine despite wearing a sleeveless top and jean shorts. Guess she's spent plenty of time in high altitudes so he doubt the cold would bother her much."you two should get a room."dash seem to be in a teasing mood which Finn proceeded to chuckle at as booms, and Twilights faces begin to redden.
2 the tall cone like ice mountains towered the landscape however Jake paid little attention to them as he could just walk right over them but upon reaching the tallest mountain he stopped getting down low before shrinking back to his smaller size."okay passengers this is where the jake rides stop." Everyone landed in the snow with the exception of rainbow Dash who was flying just above them."okay so we need to go in with a plan."fin spoke to the group."ever since the ice King turned back into Simon a lot of the snow golems who were here as security have gone banaynays so we're in for a fight when we head in."Twilight looked at him her brow narrowing in confusion."are snow golems dangerous."jake looked up at her."normally not but these guys have been weirdly aggressive like Rabid killer slushies."Twilight seem to understand as she nodded."so how do we subdue them?"the three boys looked at each other as they were unsure of how to tell her."you can't really subdue a crazed golem best you can do is destroy them."both the girls were taking abit back by this."well they're not alive right."it was clear that Twilight was getting nervous as she asked this."Golems are constructs given life so yes but you have to understand out here and in many worlds friendship isn't always going to be the answer. I know it might be hard for you and I'm not asking you to hurt anyone I can take care of that and I can also promise no one will be harmed who doesn't deserve it."there was a sudden look on twilights face as she looked into the blank expression boom was giving off clearly not trying to show emotion. Boom reached into his bag and pulled out what appeared to be a small curved weapon. Of course what he had actually pulled out was a desert eagle hand cannon. It's a type of gun for anyone who doesn't know."if it really bothers you, you can stay here but these golems need to be put down especially if they have gone rabid."Twilight looked away holding the jacket he lent her tightly."I think I'll wait outside if this is gonna be as violent as I think you're implying."she looked away from them but then snapped her gaze back at him seeing the brightness in his right gold eye it wasn't a look of anger or intent to harm it was a look of sympathy."that might be for the best Jake you stay with her me and Finn can handle these guys on our own rainbow you're free to come or go if you wish."rainbow dash pulled out her daggers from their sheathes not saying a word. Boom turned to the the mountain knowing what he was going to have to do."let's get this over with."
3 Booms groups perspective) As the group approached the entrance of the ice King's old home burst of cold air erupted from a large crack at the base of the mountain. Several deep growls could be heard from within and the chittering of ice dinging against other ice likely snow golems. Boom held his firearm tight because he stared into the dark blue abyss. It wasn't the first Time Boom had to kill something he had done it countless times before and countless different worlds but never before has he felt such a dread inside of him. It wasn't for the creatures inside in fact he was likely doing them a favor putting them out of their misery since without ice Kings magic whatever he was using to keep them stable is likely long gone. It was for the look that's Twilight had given him. Truth of the matter was he had rathered Twilight not see him as a monster he just hoped that this wouldn't ruin anything between the two of them.'she didn't seem too badly faced All things considered maybe we're still good as long as she doesn't have to witness me do it.' He found himself lost in his thoughts as the three of them descended into the caverns beneath the mountain. They walked for a while but it didn't take to long to reach the lower Chambers All things considered. It was then that they spotted the creatures within. At the top of the chamber two giant snow centipedes loomed over them they're legs were made of solid ice along with their pincers and several holes filled with coal made up their eyes. However they were clearly not normal snow creatures they're clear white snow bodies had darken to a sickly Gray and from between their pincers water dripped out like the foam from a rabbit animal. Finn pulled out a sword the one he had gotten from rattleballs as he prepared himself to defend Rambo dash on the other hand decided to take a more aggressive approach heading straight up at one of the centipedes slashing it on its side with her blades. The creature tried to retaliate by trying to contort and bend its body in order to bite her and it would have if not for the incredible speed of rainbow Dash who quickly dive bombed down to the ground in order to avoid the hit."don't get too aggressive Dash the centipedes are highly unpredictable in this state! There's no telling how their powers have mutated!"rainbow Dash simply rolled her eyes clearly not taking the Giant snowbug seriously. However as as if on cue the second snow centipede sent a barrage of icicles from its liquid maw at rainbow Dash barely found the time to move. Several of the icicles slice and cut up her sides as a bit of red blood dripped from her lower waist and shoulders. However was lucky enough to avoid taking any serious injuries by using her wings to propel her back into a wall. The injured centipede released from the ceiling falling down to the ground right over boom while the second one jump towards Finn. This time however it wasn't facing a newbie as Finn jumped right back at it and right over the icy Jaws onto its head. Finn then proceeded to strike his sword blue right into its head effortlessly shoving the sword through it and causing it to completely collapse into piles of snow as it's ice limbs rolled away. The injured centipede stared down boom roaring in his face before trying it clam its jaws on him. Boom was faster over ducking effortlessly underneath it right into its underbelly. Once he was directly under it he pointed the firearm up and pulled the trigger.*BANG*the middle section of the creature exploded leaving its bottom half in shambles and piles of snow. He then turned to the front of the creature now on its side unable to move. There were whimpers from the poor creature still trying its best to bite that boom."sorry about this."He said in a sorrowful tone. He razed his gun up to the creature's head closed his eyes and all that could be heard throughout the mountain and the kingdom around it was the sound of the firearm going off. Outside Twilight feel a shutter go down her spine as we heard the noise.

Chapter 2, The Neighbors
When I woke up, It was already the next day. The obnoxious sun glaring at me through the curtainless window. I groaned, sitting up, my back aching from sleeping on the floor. I looked, seeing Rambo pawing at the door, asking to be let out. I sat up, kicking my way out of the sleeping bag, opening the door for the massive dog, who shoved his way out the door.
“Jeff! Wake up darlin and help us with the boxes please!” I heard my mom holler from downstairs.
I smiled, hearing my mom’s voice first thing in the morning was the best. Even if it was her telling me to grab scratchy cardboard boxes and carry them back and forth.
“Coming mama!” I hollered back, running down the stairs so fast I nearly fell.
“Hey raggamuffin.” My mom chuckled, ruffling up my messy head of hair.
“Hey mama.” I smiled back, hugging her, my mom returning my embrace.
“Ok, now go help your daddy and your brother with the boxes. Your boxes have your name on it baby.” My mom told me, giving me a kiss on the head as she shooed me away.
I walked outside, taking a few good seconds to adjust to the bright sun. I couldn’t remember the last time I’ve ever been outside when it was so bright. It was probably a California thing, hell if I know.
I kept walking to the moving truck, walking up the ramp, seeing my dad pass by with boxes in his hands.
“Mornin’ champ.” He greeted as he passed.
I gave my dad a wave back, searching for the boxes with my name written on them. After digging a bit, I found one of them. I carried it into my room, doing the same with the rest of my boxes. Back and forth, up and down the stairs. I honestly couldn’t tell whether I was running suicides or moving. It kept me busy though.
I had scratches from the cardboard all over my forearms. My arms and back felt so strained from constantly crouching down to pick up stuff. The constant back and forth up the stairs also took a bit of my energy. But it wasn’t as bad as soccer and lacrosse. Those were honestly way worse with the constant running.
After I had set the last box down in my room, I heard my mom call me from downstairs.
“Jeff! Come down please we have some neighbors!” My mom yelled, to which I rushed down the stairs.
Once I was outside, we were met by a young woman and her son. She had a slim deer like face with freckles and big doe eyes. Her son was about five or six, he has scruffy brown hair with big hazel green doe eyes and freckles.
“Hey, I’m Barbara, and this is my son, Billy.” The tall slim lady smiled, her hand patting her young son’s shoulder.
“Hi Barbara, my name’s Margaret, this is my husband Peter, and these two boys right here are my sons, Jeff and Liu.” My mom spoke, a smile on her face, our father matching her smile as the three of them shook hands.
“Hi I’m Billy!” The little kid blurted out, shoving out his hand towards my twin and I.
“Hey Billy, I’m Jeff, this is my twin Liu.” I smiled, shaking his tiny hand, the kid’s jaw dropping.
‘Mommy! They’re twins!” He told his mom, pulling on the edge of her shirt.
‘Oh! Your boys really are so alike Margaret!” Barbara replied, my mom laughing.
“You should’ve seen Jeff when he had short hair, couldn’t tell one from the other.” Our mother chuckled.
The three adults talked for a while, discussing random stuff. The conversation drew on for so long I knew my mom had already made a new best friend. I remember when I had to literally sit in the candle aisle at Wal-mart for a whole hour because my mom couldn’t stop talking to a coworker of hers. I love my mom but she’s gonna be the death of me someday I swear.
“Nice meetin’ y’all, see y’all later!” Our mom waved, finally, alas, I didn’t have to listen to my mom ramble about my brother and I.
Once we were back inside, I saw our cat Chanel laying on the couch. I smiled, quickly scooping up the little kitty in my arms, he let out a surprised meow, but instantly started purring when he realized it was me. I scratched his ears as I held him on the couch. My parents were talking in the kitchen, while my brother was attempting to figure out how to get the TV plugged up and connected to cable.
“You know It’d be nice if you helped me instead of petting the cat dude.” Liu told me, shooting me a dirty look.
“Sorry but I’m not willing to get electrocuted.” I clapped back.
Liu rolled his eyes, “You’re not gonna get electrocuted you wuss-” just then, almost on clue, the outlet shocked. Liu making a weird yelp noise, holding his finger.
“See? I’m not finna play ding-dong-ditch with God’s door dumbass.” I told him, sticking out my tongue.
“Shut up Rapunzel-” He snapped, embarrassed.
I rolled my eyes, continuing to pet Chanel, who was almost half asleep. My mom returned, turning to help my brother configure cable wires. The TV eventually flicked on, Liu grabbing the remote, changing the channel to some random show. Probably some white trash rich people show, House wives of nobody fucking cares. I hated the shows, but they were also entertaining.
At some point, my mom had turned it to the news. The reporter talking about a grizzly murder that had happened the night before. The body of a convicted child abuser was found strung up and gutted in the woods. The body was mutilated in all sorts of ways. Apparently the murderers had also smacked him around like a pinata. That was gruesome. Like, being a human pinata sounded painful. It wouldn’t even be that exciting, I mean, you don't even get candy you just get teeth n’ stuff.
We had dinner, which was just door dash Steak Escape. I grabbed Chanel, taking the little siamese cat upstairs to my room, plopping the cat down on my bed. Quickly walking into my bathroom, taking a shower.
I sat, letting the skin boiling water rain down on me. I closed my eyes, leaning my head up, the shower water making my forehead numb. I heard static fuzz up in my ears, slowly getting louder and louder. Before I opened my eyes, it had completely stopped. I quickly washed my hair, making sure I got it all before I lathered myself up in body wash, watching the soap rinse down into the drain.
I noticed the water turning pinkish red, quickly putting the back of my hand up to my face. Only to see blood. Shit, I was having another nosebleed. I’d been having a lot lately, they’d bleed until I started to hear static again. I didn’t wanna tell my parents, they’d think I was lying. Who would believe something like that anyways? Like, ‘Oh hey mom I hear static and everytime I do my nose starts gushing blood.’ Like my mom would totally believe that. I stepped out, quickly pinching my nose as I leaned over the sink. The static became louder and louder. It hurt so bad, it was ringing in my ears like a siren. I moved my ears back, trying to drown it out by making the blood in my ears rumble. But it didn’t stop. That’s when I gagged, hacking and choking, before a slug of blood splattered into the sink. Yuck.
I let go of my no longer bleeding nose, My hands stained bright red from the blood as it began to dry up. I turned on the sink, running my hands up under the water. Quickly grabbing a towel to dry myself off. I looked at myself in the mirror. My skin pale and yellowish, I felt cold and clammy. The skin on my arms splotchy with red. I looked sick as a dog. The bags under my eyes a dark purple brown. I looked disgusting, like actually nasty. I thought showers were supposed to make you feel and look better. Clearly today’s shower decided to nerf me.
I walked out, Chanel meowing loudly as he waited outside the door. The needy bastard wanting to be given attention. I nudged him away, grabbing some basketball shorts and a random t-shirt, bouncing up onto my bed. Chanel jumping up. The small cat meowing as he walked on my stomach, shoving his forehead onto my hand as I pet him. Chanel cured up on my lap purring until I got tired of petting him and fell asleep. Tomorrow was gonna be one hell of a day.

Blu-ray Review: Mandy
Tumblr media
Panos Cosmatos made an auspicious debut with 2010's hypnotic Beyond the Black Rainbow. Even as the progeny of an established filmmaker - Panos is the son of George P. Cosmatos (Rambo: First Blood Part II, Tombstone) - his auteur approach was remarkably refined for a first effort. Eight long years later, Cosmatos returns with Mandy. It's less cold and Kubrickian than Black Rainbow; still gorgeous and colorful, yet more scrappy and dangerous to suit the emotional story. Mandy also embraces a more linear - but still phantasmagorical - plot structure.
Set in California's Shadow Mountains circa 1983, the film centers around Red Miller (Nicolas Cage, Face/Off) and his girlfriend, Mandy (Andrea Riseborough, Birdman). After the members of the hippie cult Children of the New Dawn attack Mandy as part of a ritual, Red embarks on a hunt for retribution. His path to vengeance is paved with blood, fire, a hand-forged battle axe, sadomasochistic biker demons, and a chainsaw duel. Oh, plus Cheddar Goblin.
Tumblr media
Cosmatos has the uncanny ability to wear his influences on his sleeve while forging something wholly original. The general plot calls to mind the likes of The Last House on the Left and Death Wish. The aforementioned chainsaw duel bears resemblance to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Phantasm II, while the demons summoned by the cult look like Hellraiser's Cenobites by way of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Red and Mandy live near Crystal Lake, a nod to Friday the 13th. The brief, animated interludes make reference to Heavy Metal. Yet Mandy is an entirely different beast.
Cage is often criticized for his eccentric performances, but history has demonstrated that the right filmmakers can reign him in and utilize his idiosyncrasies to great success. Cage is unironically good in Mandy, delivering a fearless performance that ranks among his best. Cosmatos utilizes the actor’s signature “Cage rage,” as he comes off as effectively animalistic. The director reportedly had Cage watch Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood to get into the right head space for the role.
Tumblr media
The rest of the cast also fits perfectly into place. With a face full of character, Riseborough's subdued performance allows her to do much of the acting through body language. Linus Roache (Batman Begins) plays the cult leader, Jeremiah; he's clearly modeled after Charles Manson, although more mysterious than charismatic. Bill Duke (Predator) has a small role as an old friend of Red's, divulging the cult's backstory in an engaging monologue. Richard Brake (who stole the show in 31) makes an all-too-brief appearance as a drug chemist.
Music plays a large role in the dark journey. Jeremiah, like Charles Manson, is a bitter, failed musician; he even forces Mandy - clad in a Black Sabbath T-shirt - to listen to one of his original songs after comparing himself to The Beatles. While the opening credits are set to King Crimson's haunting "Starless," the rest of the film employs an immersive soundtrack by Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, Sicario). The Icelandic composer tragically passed away earlier this year at only 48, but he left behind a fantastic swan song. The textured, synth-based score features guitar work by Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))).
Tumblr media
Although RLJE Films recently began dabbling in 4K Ultra HD releases, Mandy is curiously not one of them - but the Blu-ray still looks beautiful. I would have loved a deep-dive audio commentary from Cosmatos, but the filmmaker shares some insight in a 22-minute making-of documentary. Like the film, the documentary is a visual experience; it consists of audio interviews with cast and crew members set to concept art, behind-the-scenes stills, and footage. 14 minutes of deleted and extended scenes (including the uncut Cheddar Goblin commercial) are also included.
On paper, Mandy is a straightforward, pulpy revenge story, but it becomes something much more through Cosmatos' singular vision. He and director of photography Benjamin Loeb (King Cobra) craft colorful, hypnagogic visuals to match the nightmarish plot. But beyond the style is substance; a profound and allegorical tale. The high-octane latter half of Mandy’s two-hour runtime is earned through the character- and world-building that occurs throughout the slow-burning former portion.
Mandy will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 30 via RLJE Films.

A form of justice - Part 11 (1/2)
"What do you think is the most important quality an officer can have?"
Rebecca found herself staring at the face of Assistant Commissioner Locke. "What do you think is the most important quality an officer can have?" he repeated. She tried to respond but no words came to her mouth. "What do you think is the most important quality an officer can have?" the question was asked of her again. She could not move her hands or body - she was bound to a chair. "What do you think is the most important quality an officer can have?" The Assistant Commissioner was raising a gun. She pulled at her restraints.
"Rebecca" a distant voice said.
Locke aimed the gun at her. "What do you think is the most important quality an officer can have?" He started to pull the trigger.
"Rebecca!" the voice shouted, closer to her.
She opened her eyes, breathing heavily. It took her a few seconds to adjust. The room she was in was well-lit, with white walls. She was lying on a mattress with a blue duvet over her. She realised that she had been here before - it was Kate's spare room. Someone was squeezing her hand. She looked to her right to see Marcus smiling at her.
"Morning sunshine" he said to her.
"Marcus?" she asked. "What...what happened?" She felt groggy, like she had been drugged and as she tried to turn on her side to see Marcus clearer she felt a sharp pain in her shoulder that made her wince.
"Keep still" he said. "They got you in the shoulder. Might've fractured a bone but hopefully no damage to the nerve". He held up the fragment of a bullet. "Nasty little bugger, this. Sunita got it out" he explained as Rebecca looked puzzled at him.
Rebecca tried to process everything. She remembered firing at Mulvaney, his guards firing back, pain, and..."Kate!" she said urgently, "Where's Kate?"
"She's fine" Marcus calmed her as she got agitated, "she's been with you most of the night. I finally convinced her to go and get some coffee ten minutes ago".
Rebecca felt relieved. She was alive, and Kate was too. Her mind was piecing everything together. "And Mulvaney?" she asked, "did we get him?"
Marcus shook his head. "I don't think so. Kate had told us of your plan so me and Sunita were nearby. We got to you when we saw the fire but he'd gone by that point. Managed to get you away before the police arrived".
"There were some women - they were trafficked. Where are...? Where's Nadja?" She had so many questions.
"They're safe. We were tuned to the police radio. They found their way to a station and from what I understand they're being given shelter. Rebecca" he said, "I know you've got a lot of questions. There's a lot we need to talk about. But right now you need to rest". He kept holding her hand. "Put your head back down. I'll make you a drink".
Rebecca lay back as he said but thoughts kept racing through her head. She still felt weary and emotionally drained but took some deep breaths and closed her eyes. 'You got Nadja and the women to safety' she told herself, 'you're alive, Kate is too, that's a win'. She tried to hold on to the fact that even if everything else had gone wrong, those things had gone right. She remembered Locke, and standing over him and shooting him. She felt conflicted. She had shot a fellow officer but he was a traitor, likely feeding information to Mulvaney about their investigation. What would happen now? Her head hurt.
Marcus returned a few minutes later with some tea and helped Rebecca sit up in bed. She noticed she was wearing a large grey t-shirt. The tea warmed her and the fog in her head started to clear. The sun was streaming into the room from outside and she knew it was the start of a beautiful bank holiday weekend.
"How you feeling Rambo?" Kate appeared at the door of the room, wearing a t-shirt and jeans and carrying a coffee cup. Sunita was behind her. Before Rebecca could respond, her colleague marched into the room and hugged her.
"Kate, I..." Rebecca could not find the words to properly say anything. She clasped her tightly. Kate just hugged her back - no words were needed between them.
"How's the shoulder?" Kate asked her.
"It's fine" Rebecca told her. The pain was subsiding and as she moved more she was starting to feel the blood flow again. "Thank you Sunita" she said to the Asian woman still in the doorway.
"Me dad was always upset I wasn't a doctor" Sunita joked. "Don't worry about it love".
"I think we can now officially call you part of the crazy team too" Marcus added, "that was some hardcore crazy shit you two pulled". Rebecca chuckled. It felt good to smile and be amongst friends. "You even made the front page of the BBC website" Marcus told them and showed his phone. The headline on the page read "Fire at illegal party treated as suspicious". There was no mention of Locke.
Rebecca frowned and looked at Kate, who knew what she was thinking. "They've not released anything about Locke" she said. "I got a call from the DCI this morning. He wants me and Afidi at the scene later. Sounds like they called him pretty early this morning. The Commissioner will be going crazy about this".
"What can I do?" Rebecca asked.
"Nothing. Rest up" Kate told her. "I'll see what they've been able to dig up later this afternoon".
------
"What do they mean, a bloody heart attack?"
Rebecca's head was hurting again. Her and Marcus were sitting on Kate's sofa watching the news coverage of the fire in Stratford. The mysterious nature of it had garnered national attention but in recent minutes the BBC had announced the death of Assistant Commissioner Locke by a heart attack. Rebecca was incredulous. "He was Mulvaney's fucking informant, why won't they say that?"
"It's all politics Bec" Marcus told her, "pretty hard to turn round and say one of the top members of the force was at an illegal brothel. Met needs to try and keep itself intact". Rebecca disliked this but could see the logic behind it. "Don't worry" Marcus assured her, "there's some paper out there somewhere that'll link Mulvaney and Locke and when they find it, you'll have your proof. For now, it's just....it's just what it is".
Rebecca slumped back on the sofa and resolved in her mind to find the link between Mulvaney and Locke. There would be new evidence to uncover now, a new property to investigate, she would find something. She pondered what to do and continued watching the news until Kate and Sunita returned with a couple of pizzas. "How did it go?" Rebecca asked Kate, who had been at the crime scene all afternoon.
"I actually saw the DCI smile," she told her. "Probably the first time in a while that he's done that. He's putting it all together, the girls we rescued have told them about Mulvaney and what he was doing. He was spitting feathers about Locke, going on about how he trusted the two-faced bastard".
"What do they think happened?"
"Well now that's the interesting bit" Kate told her. "The current theory is Mulvaney's gang is splintering and turning into a couple of warring factions. It helps explain not just last night but also Pocock as well".
"But Nadja and the girls...?"
"She's just said they found the keys in the confusion and escaped. No mention of accomplices. They're at a shelter, all safe. Now come on, tuck in before these get cold". Kate and Sunita laid out the pizzas in front of the sofa whilst Marcus searched through Netflix for a film to watch with Kate and Sunita offering strong opinions on all the options he gave them until they settled on the Hong Kong film 'Infernal Affairs'.
They laughed and joked and ate and Rebecca felt safe. She huddled in between Marcus and Kate and relaxed until Kate's buzzer rang. Kate stood and went to the phone on the wall to answer it. "Oh bugger" she said after seeing who it was but unlocked the door to her apartment complex. "Bugger, bugger, bugger" she repeated to the group and paused the film before opening the door to her home and welcoming in George Digby-Wright. He wore a double-breasted pinstriped suit and carried a black briefcase.
"Good evening Katherine" he said as he entered. "Good evening Rebecca, good evening Mr. Beresford, good evening Ms. Patel" he said to the group on the sofa.
"Who the bloody hell are you?" asked Sunita, looking confused at George.
"George Digby-Wright, at your service" he answered, bowing his head slightly. "I have heard such wonderful things about you Ms. Patel, it is a pleasure to finally meet. I'm an old friend of Katherine's".
"George, what do you want?" Kate asked him, looking distinctly unimpressed at his intrusion.
"Ah yes, to business as always Katherine" he said. He wandered to the kitchen table and opened his briefcase. "I hear there was a rather unfortunate fire in Stratford last night at a party that was hosted by Mr. Mulvaney. My intelligence suggests the individuals who started the fire escaped" He gave a pointed look at Kate and then Rebecca, then pulled a file from his briefcase. "We had suspicions someone may be using some parties to exert undue influence on members of the establishment and we have been looking into certain members offshore bank dealings for a while. This would be those records of Assistant Commissioner Locke, who I understand tragically perished last night". He handed the file to Kate who opened it and started to study it. "You'll find the accounts linked to Mr. Mulvaney highlighted in yellow" George told her.
"George, this....this is incredible" she said. "This'll let us strangle his assets, force him from hiding". Kate looked astonished at the work. She handed it to Rebecca, who looked at it with Marcus and Sunita. George was right. Locke's dealings with Mulvaney were all catalogued and highlighted. The Mulvaney accounts had been transferring him money for the last year. It would prove he was involved in the conspiracy.
"Bloody hell" commented Marcus, "this is gold dust".
"I am glad you will find this useful," George said, shutting his briefcase.
"What do you want?" asked Kate suspiciously. George was not known for giving something for nothing.
"Well....how about a slice of pepperoni?" he replied and then laughed, "that was a very brave thing you did, Kate". He beamed at her and she hugged him tightly.
"Thanks George" she said.
"And now I will bid you adieu" he said, "the excitement of the previous day has left many senior government figures a little shaken. They must be duly corrected". He nodded to the group and left the apartment.
"That's amazing," Rebecca said after George had gone.
"I know" her partner replied, "he finally called me Kate".
------
"If you were Mulvaney, what would you do?"
Kate frowned and considered her response. "Well let's define the situation. You've woken up and found half your assets seized. Your main informant at the Met is dead, the hostage you had taken for the other one is gone and the paper trail we're uncovering is about to take a large chunk of your operations".
"Right, exactly" Rebecca said, "and let's not forget you're a sociopath with nothing to lose". Kate nodded and Rebecca could see her having the same conversation internally that she had had the previous day. They were sipping coffee together on Tuesday morning in the office. Rebecca's shoulder had healed mostly but she made sure to wear a long-sleeved top with a high neckline in the office and trousers to cover the bruises on her leg. Kate was wearing a blue shirt and jeans.
"I find some way to hit back" Kate said, "I reassert my authority, do something to remind the rest of London that I still own this fucking city".
Now it was Rebecca's turn to nod. "And so who do you target?"
"My most public enemy"
"And that is...?" Rebecca prompted her.
The realisation dawned on Kate. "Holy fuck"
"Exactly"
"When does their school term start?"
"Tomorrow"
Kate shook her head. "Bollocks". They had both concluded that Mulvaney would carry out his threat to target DCI Sullivan's daughter. The office had been a hub of activity in the previous couple of days, with Kate heading in on both the Sunday and the Bank Holiday Monday for some time. Sullivan and the team had been making calls since Kate presented them with the evidence of Mulvaney's offshore accounts that were paying Locke. The money trail had let them discover several businesses and interests they did not know about. Assets were being seized, properties raided and several of his associates had been arrested although none were giving up any information on Mulvaney's whereabouts. The DCI was currently out at an urgent meeting with the Met Commissioners to discuss Locke's betrayal and the progress on his case but Rebecca had noticed a new energy about him when she saw him that morning. Kate had told her that he had practically jumped for joy when she presented him the evidence and had believed her that she'd had it from a friend in the service in return for the valuable 'help' they had received from Patrick Hanlon. Rebecca could feel the excitement in the room - they were close, very close.
"We've got to protect her," she told Kate.
"Absolutely" her partner agreed, "you think he'd make a move tomorrow?"
"It's a new term, new teachers, a lot of new faces in the building" Rebecca reasoned, "what better time to slip one of your own men in undetected?"
"But how are we going to keep an eye on her all day?" Kate asked.
"Perhaps I can be of assistance?" a male voice said, and both Kate and Rebecca turned, startled, to see Detective Inspector Tim Warren standing behind them.
"Tim!" Rebecca exclaimed, delighted to see him again. He looked rested and clean in a freshly-pressed suit. He smiled at her.
"Good to have you back," Kate said warmly. She offered her hand for him to shake but instead he hugged her gently. Kate was surprised but embraced him back. "I thought you were enjoying some time off?" she asked him.
"I was" Tim said, "with my aunt and uncle in Northampton - Stefan is still there. However, I saw the news Saturday and spoke with the DCI yesterday. I told him the virus passed quicker than expected and I wanted to return and help you finish off the mongrel bastard we're chasing down. I presume the weekend was...?" He looked questioning at Rebecca and Kate.
"It was," Kate said.
"I heard a number of trafficked women were released from captivity"
Kate nodded and spoke quietly. "Bec is the one to thank for that".
Tim looked astonished. "And you're both OK? Unharmed?"
"Just don't hit me on the shoulder" Rebecca told him, "but yeah, we're good".
"Perhaps we should take a walk and catch up and I might see how I can give you both an out-of-office assignment when it might suit?" he asked.
"I thought you'd never ask, boss". Kate winked at him and they walked collectively out of the office.

Video Night in Kathmandu And Other Reports From the Not-So-Far East By Pico Iyer 376 pages. Alfred A. Knopf. $19.95.
Once upon a time, travel writers packed their bags and turned their backs on civilization, journeying like Evelyn Waugh ''to the Tropics and the Arctic, with the belief that barbarism was a dodo to be stalked with a pinch of salt.'' Far and wide they traveled, looking for sights that might jar them not with the shock of recognition but with the shock of the unknown, and less than half a century ago they were still able to discover what Waugh called ''the moon landscape'' - countries and peoples so foreign that they confirmed the traveler's own anomalous identity, places that attested to the prodigal variety of the world.
Today, of course, the world seems a much smaller place, its nations linked not only by a network of political and economic alliances but also by a shared nervous system of cultural axioms and phenomena, most of them American in origin. Just how has ''America's pop-cultural imperialism spread through the world's most ancient civilizations''? That was the question the journalist Pico Iyer asked himself as he set off in search of signs of American influence abroad. ''I wanted to see,'' he writes in ''Video Night in Kathmandu,'' ''what kind of resistance had been put up against the Coca-Colonizing forces and what kind of counter-strategies were planned. And I hoped to discover which Americas got through to the other side of the world, and which got lost in translation.''
As an American resident, a British subject and an Indian citizen, Mr. Iyer was already familiar with what he calls ''cross-cultural anomalies and the mixed feelings of exile,'' and in 1985 he headed for Asia, convinced that it represented ''the fiercest and most complex'' front in the cultural battle between East and West. He spent seven months crisscrossing that continent, searching for ''the brand-new kinds of exotica thrown up by our synthetic age,'' and his travels have yielded a meticulously observed and reported book - a magical mystery tour through the brave new world of Asia. He takes us to Burma, ''the dotty eccentric of Asia, the queer maiden aunt who lives alone and whom the maid has forgotten to visit,'' and to Hong Kong, ''the last treasure left in the oyster that was the Old Boys' world.'' He shows us the bars of Bangkok, where call girls wear numbers for their customers' convenience, and movie lots in Bombay, where the emphasis is on making everything ''bigger, broader, louder.''
In the course of his travels, Mr. Iyer repeatedly stumbles across the sort of cultural dislocations usually associated with world fairs. There are Mexican cafes and fern bars in Bali, health-food joints dispensing ''Reality Soup'' in Nepal. The theme song from ''Bonanza'' blares from speakers at a club in Manila, while ''Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy'' plays on the television in Rangoon. Other American imports seem even more incongruous. Within 10 days of its Beijing opening, he reports, the Rambo movie ''First Blood'' sold a million tickets. In India, five remakes of the movie have been put into production. In Thailand, 15-foot cutouts of the American vigilante tower over local theaters.
In some cases, the rush to imitate the West has comical results: a shiny new hotel in China, for instance, rises on a windy, isolated site, three hours from the nearest town; tourists are instructed to catch a bus at 5:30 in the afternoon to catch a plane the next morning. In other cases, the consequences are more sobering. In Bali, Mr. Iyer finds, tourists have turned the quiet fishing village of Kuta into a huge, gaudy singles' bar; and in Tibet, ''countercultural imperialists'' have built facsimile Greenwich Village pads, 1960's style.
As Mr. Iyer sees it, there's a distinct difference between the British legacy in the Far East and the American: ''If the American Empire had to do with currency, immediacy, annihilation of the past, its British counterpart had been founded on continuity, tradition, a reverence, and remembrance, of things past.'' ''India seemed to have gained, as a colony,'' he writes, ''a sense of ritual solemnity, a feeling for the language of Shakespeare, a polished civil service, a belief in democracy and a sonorous faith in upstanding legal or educational institutions.'' In contrast, he adds, ''the most conspicuous institutions that America had bequeathed to the Philippines seemed to be the disco, the variety show and the beauty pageant. Perhaps the ideas and ideals of America had proved too weighty to be shipped across the seas, or perhaps they were just too fragile.''
Some of Mr. Iyer's observations -unavoidably, perhaps - have a ring of familiarity: the disjunction between the Marcoses' lavish life style and the desperate poverty of the Philippines; or the love of conformity and order that exists in Japan. For the most part, however, ''Video Night in Kathmandu'' surprises as it informs. Pushing aside such easy formulations as ''the First World is corrupting the Third'' or the third world ''is hustling the First,'' Mr. Iyer shrewdly observes that ''often what we call corruption'' other countries are ''inclined to call progress or profit.''
''The Westerner is drawn to the tradition of the Easterner, and almost covets his knowledge of suffering,'' he writes, ''but what attracts the Easterner to the West is exactly the opposite - his future, and his freedom from all hardship. After a while, each starts to become more like the other, and somewhat less like the person the other seeks. The New Yorker disappoints the locals by turning into a barefoot ascetic dressed in bangles and beads, while the Nepali peasant frustrates his foreign supplicants by turning out to be a traveling salesman in Levi's and Madonna T-shirt. Soon, neither is quite the person he was, or the one the other wanted. The upshot is confusion.''

As iPhones get bigger Stallone Rambo last blood September 20 shirt . sneakers get chunkier, and earrings get wider, handbags are getting smaller. Stallone Rambo last blood September 20 Unisex Almost immediately, Jacquemus mini bags were spotted on the likes of Kendall Jenner in New York, after the Met Gala last year, and Rihanna, while on a trip to Barbados Stallone Rambo last blood September 20 shirt . One season later, virtually every model who walked Jacquemus’s F/W 2018 collection was carrying a mini bag in varying brightly coloured hues. This season, Simon Porte introduced the mini ‘Le Chiquito’ bag; an even smaller 2” long creation with the capacity to hold a pair of small earrings or, more cynically, a bag of drugs. These miniscule bags have even gone as far as becoming the identifier for the Jacquemus brand, and and are now one of the most sought after designer bags. While functionality clearly doesn’t define this trend, the high price tag and air of exclusivity do. From Chanel and BOYY, to Staud and By Far, we’ve now seen countless high-end takes on this style. By Far’s products tend to play with texture and colour, while BOYY and Staud produce pint size bags that explore geometric shapes. Chanel took the trend one step further by layering two mini bags, or ‘side packs’, on models in their Spring/Summer 2019 show. More recently, Chanel continued to play with size in their Resort 2020 show, where tiny bags were hanging from gold-chained belts on the waists of top models Of course, Simon Porte hardly invented the mini bag. If you cast your mind back to Fendi’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, Karl Lagerfeld was the first to introduce us to the modern mini bag phenomenon. His take was structured and embellished, accompanied by fluffy oversized key chains. However, women have also been carrying around mini bags long before Fendi’s 2015 collection. From the early to mid 1900s, women carried around small purses or ‘reticules’. These small purses were especially popular in the early 1900s, and were often carried by wealthy women because they were small, elegant and held very little. During this time, these small purses were a status symbol, and to a certain degree, this still rings true today. Members of the royal family, such as Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, often don’t carry a purse with them at all. One of my preferred methods How to kiss lady: we are sitting side by side, I'm feeling truly comfy and talking with other individuals as well as neck full of hickeys with her. I'm not looking her all the time, just chilling and feeling truly comfy, however I'm listening to her. So we consume a little, and she is talking, and I'm kind of paying attention to her and likewise acting so secure like I'm the owner of this location. If I am positive, this makes her likewise feel good. So for a minute while she is talking I'm looking away, and saying, "you know exactly what, I believe you are talking excessive" in a calm friendly tone of voice.

There is likewise a scene toward the ending involving one of the ladies saying she needs to go to the restroom, when the other women inform her to go in the bushes, she says to late, and raises her long t-shirt to reveal a damp area on her crotch. The lady then goes running after the other girls attempting to hug them and get her pee on them. The scene for me was just a little too visual, and honestly I would not want my daughter (if I had one) to be checking out such things, and how to give hickey it is all right to make fun of somebody who gets their first period.

Gun-Toting Zoo Owners in Showdown With PETA and the Feds Over Baby Tigers
One day in October, Randy Stearns walked out to a Florida campfire, dressed in a fringed leather top like a modern-day Davy Crockett. Hello, friends, Randy the Tiger Man, the animal trainer greeted the camera, which was set between a teepee and totem pole out in the woods near his familys Dade City zoo.
You cant believe a damn thing you see on the news, the 34-year-old declared in the filmed fireside chat posted on Facebook. Just look at me. Im the newest Charlie Sheen. Every time you go on, theres something on about us, the park
Then Stearns took aim at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)a constant topic in The Tiger Mans online videos. Kind of like Rambo, they drew first blood, Stearns said. We had to go out there, defend ourselves.
Just two months before, the wannabe Jack Hanna stood guard at the zoos gates with a holstered weapon, joining supporters flaunting neon PETA Kills T-shirts. They were protesting, and allegedly delaying, a court-ordered inspection of the private, unaccredited zoos collection of adult and baby tigers.
Stearns and his parents run Dade Citys Wild Things (DCWT), a 22-acre zoo about 44 miles northeast of Tampa. The attraction has more than 300 animals: jaguars, lions, bears, lemurs, macaques, porcupines, bearded dragons, and other reptiles.
But its known for baby tigers, deployed for photo-ops and swim sessions in the zoos chlorinated pool. In years past, the cubs appeared on Good Morning America and Fox & Friends for the seemingly adorable gimmick.
Yet behind the footage, theres allegedly a darker side to the tiger business, according to animal-welfare advocatesone that prematurely rips cubs away from their mothers and forces them into stressful encounters with humans for profit.
According to PETA, Dade Citys Wild Things is contributing to a captive tiger overpopulation crisis by continually breeding them for photo-ops and ticket sales. Once cubs grow too large for customer interactions, theyre left to languish for the rest of their days in cages, or sold off to other roadside attractions and collectors of exotic animals, PETA says.
The big cats are at the center of separate lawsuits brought by PETA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which respectively allege the zoo violated the Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act over its handling of the tigers.
The zoo also faces a state lawsuit for allegedly accepting donations while not registered as a nonprofit. Floridas Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services claims the zoo used hundreds of thousands in charity funds to foot the bills for Randy Stearns nuptials and the bankruptcy payments of his mother, Kathy.
Meanwhile, Randy Stearns is battling criminal charges in Missouri, where hes accused of exposing himself to five girls at a hotel in June 2016. Stearns, who was in town for a conference, allegedly exposed his genitals to one victim as she left an elevator and headed to her room, an indictment states.
Stearns followed the girl and flashed her through the zipper of his pants, the indictment states. A spokeswoman for the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorneys Office said Stearns pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include six counts of sexual misconduct involving a child less than 15 years of age.
His next court appearance is Jan. 2, records show. Stearns defense attorney declined to comment on the charges.
When reached by The Daily Beast, DCWT declined to comment on any of the three lawsuits targeting the zoo, or on Randy Stearns pending criminal charges. Our attorney has advised us to not talk about it, one staffer said over the phone. Emails left for Kathy Stearns and Randy Stearns were not returned. The familys attorney, William Cook, declined to comment.
Still, DCWT hasnt been shy in social-media posts. In one August Facebook video (titled Daily Update : Truth), Kenneth Stearns boasts about making PETA kills signs, which he vowed to post at other zoos and along the highways.
Them five terrorists that come in here, yeah, their pictures is gonna be on there, too well make em famous, said Stearns, apparently referring to a showdown between the zoo and PETA inspectors the week before.
Thats what they do to us, aint it? You know, they dont know this is a two-way street, yall. Everything they do to us, we gonna do to them, except we gonna do legal stuff, continues the 58-year-old Stearns.
Gods going to take care of us. He always does, always has and always will this time, he said. Dont mean its easy.
PETA requested, and a judge granted, a site inspection to observe the tigers and the zoos treatment of them, saying the visit by a team of experts was necessary and permissible because the animals behavior and physical condition are central to the claims at issue in this lawsuit.
But the animal park shipped off about two dozen tigers in the weeks before an inspection could be conducted.
When that court-ordered site visit came due in early August, the Stearns family and 20 supporters kept federal marshals at the zoo gates for 30 minutes, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Kenneth and Randy Stearns were armed, touching their holsters and posturing, following us every step of the way, Jenni James, counsel for the PETA Foundation, told the Times.
James told The Daily Beast that protesters blocked the driveway and heckled and hurled epithets at PETAs inspectors. Kenneth Stearns fumbled with his holster and leaned against one of the smallest tiger enclosures to block photographs, James said.
They know they aint got nothing. With no tigers, how they gonna prove tiger abuse? You know? There aint no abuse.
Kenneth Stearns, in a Facebook video
One supporter even mocked the empty cages, yelling, Get some shots of the tigers, guys. Oh, wait. Theres none here.
The zoo posted video from the inspection on YouTube, under the heading, Terrorist Group PETA violating a court order during an inspection #1. (In response to the title, James said, I dont know what laws they think we broke frankly.)
Days after the inspection, Kenneth Stearns told fans in a Facebook video, They know they aint got nothing. With no tigers, how they gonna prove tiger abuse? You know? There aint no abuse.
Cops accompanied PETA because Kathy Stearns stopped them from conducting a prior inspection on July 20. When the inspection team arrived, they found a crude homemade wooden sign at the front gate that said, Closed due to PETA terrorist death threat.
Indeed, seemingly to avoid the survey, Kathy Stearns and her hubby, Kenneth, shipped 19 tigers to Oklahoma in a livestock trailer without air conditioning, according to the PETA lawsuit. In affidavits, witnesses claimed the tigers, some of which were pregnant, didnt have food or water. Three baby tigers were born and died during the 18-hour, 1,200-mile journey, PETA says.
The Stearns clan transported their big catsquickly and without regard to the animals safetyin a bid to defy PETA and the federal judge who had scheduled an inspection of the tigers at the facility, PETA alleges.
When one white tiger arrived at The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma, it was so thirsty it began drinking out of a dirty puddle, a Facebook video showed. Joe Maldonado, president of the Wynnewood park and a Libertarian candidate for governor, posted Facebook Live videos of the tigers, the burial of the cubs, and staffers administering anesthesia by sticking poles through holes in the trailer.
In the footage, a Wynnewood staffer zoomed in on the dead tigers and said, Kathy, all I can say is, Im sorry dear, couldnt get to em on time. At another point in the video, the man says, Somebody had some problems, had to get rid of all their tigers.
Four other cats were sent to Endangered Animal Rescue Sanctuary (EARS) in Citra, Florida, about 84 miles north of Dade City.
The sanctuarys owner, Gail Bowen, said DCWT delivered two white tigers named Remington and Luna on July 13. Kenneth Stearns transported the animals in a fifth-wheel trailer, Bowen said in an affidavit in PETAs case.
Stearns told Bowen hed eventually collect the tigers and mentioned signing a contract, but no such document was provided, the affidavit says.
Two days later, Stearns appeared at EARS with a pair of orange tigers, Rory and Rajah, in the same vehicle. Behind them was another trailer with the 19 tigers, who were all without water and appeared very hot, Bowen said.
I was profusely sweating just standing in [the] shade because it was hot as blazes, Bowen said, adding that she hosed down the tigers and gave them water to drink. According to Bowen, Stearns crew was in a hurry and left after 20 minutes.
Bowen caught up with Kathy and Kenneth Stearns on Aug. 2. During the meeting, Kathy Stearns told Bowen that PETA had sued her, and that she moved the tigers because she wanted to get them out before an inspection occurred, according to the affidavit.
Kathy Stearns then allegedly informed Bowen that she wanted the white tigers back so she could breed them. She said that she was looking to get them back in about one year, Bowen said in the affidavit.I do not believe DCWT should breed tigers to simply exploit tiger cubs in public encounters, and I did not tell either Kathy or Kenny Stearns that I would agree to return the two white tigers to DCWT, Bowen concluded.
Meanwhile, Deborah Warrick, the founder of the nonprofit St. Augustine Wild Reserve, said an associate of Kathy Stearns contacted her to see if shed accept two 7-year-old brother tigers from the Dade City zoo. In an affidavit in PETAs case, Warrick said she spoke to Stearns on July 14 and asked how many cats needed a home. Stearns, according to Warrick, was evasive but said a lot. Warwick built a new enclosure for the brothers and awaited their arrival, only to discover theyd instead gone to EARS. She called Bowen, the owner of EARS and a personal friend.
Bowen cried and told Warrick that she was very disturbed by DCWTs decision to transport 19 tigers to Oklahoma in a cattle trailer, Warrick said.
According to the affidavit, Bowen said Kenneth Stearns was among the crew transporting the tigers, which were foaming at the mouth and urinating on each other in the trailer.
A 24th tiger, a baby named Shiva who grew too big for public swims, was sent to another Florida zoo called Hernando Primate, James said. William Cook, an attorney for Kathy Stearns, told PETA counsel in a July 19 email that Shiva has grown too large for swims and she has been placed since DCWT is done with her.
PETA has argued DCWT should be held in contempt for violating the court order for an inspection.
The tigers are the evidence in our lawsuit, and the evidence is gone, James said.
Fighting Tooth and Claw
In the 2012 Good Morning America segment, reporter Matt Gutman hopped into the water to take a dip with Tony the Tiger.
The 6-week-old cat hissed and paddled away from Gutman, then climbed on top of him, apparently in an attempt to escape. ABC anchor Amy Robach joked in a voiceover that Tony doesnt look like he wants to be in the pool, and Lara Spencer chimed in, That wasnt a happy growl.
Randy Stearns joined Gutman in the pool with an older, calmer 30-pound cat named Tarzan. In the backdrop, Tony was pushed back into the water after climbing to land.
Tony the Tiger was featured in another 2012 video by Barcroft TV, swimming alongside a 5-year-old girl wearing water wings. He has a pretty good temperament, he loves attention, hes been raised around people, Randy Stearns said in the video.
I would love having my own baby tiger to swim with, the girl said, in a clip thats spilling over with cuteness.
The family-friendly publicity is a far cry from the zoos current affairs, with the three ongoing lawsuits and the criminal case against Randy Stearns.
Last month, the 19 Dade City tigers secretly shipped to Oklahoma were placed at a 720-acre wildlife sanctuary outside Boulder, Colorado.
A federal judge approved an agreement between PETA and the Wynnewood zoo to send the cats to The Wild Animal Sanctuary, where about 84 tigers roam free after being rescued from roadside zoos or surrendered by their owners.
Americas captive tigers outnumber their wild, endangered counterparts. Experts estimate as many as 10,000 captive tigers are in the United States alone.
According to PETAs lawsuit, the wild tiger population is at an all-time low, with just 3,200 of the apex predators in the world today.
But big cat sanctuaries are bursting at the seams with tigers rescued from unaccredited zoos and private owners, the complaint states.
DCWT plays a large role in the captive-tiger overpopulation crisis as one of a relatively few exhibitors who are breeding cubs for public encounters and fueling the overpopulation problem, PETA said in court papers.
The zoo sells many of the tiger cubs it regularly breeds to other exhibitors for use in public encounters and to so-called backyard breeders, the complaint alleges, adding that Kathy Stearns has a waitlist for tiger cubs, and that the cats can go for $4,000 each.
PETA filed its federal lawsuit in October 2016, alleging that the cub swimming program at Dade Citys Wild Things violates the Endangered Species Act.
The suit came after a PETA probe in 2015 and 2016, when an eyewitness worked and volunteered at the zoo to document what the group claims is abusive handling of distressed and sickly animals.
Photograph and video footage reveal the zoos true stripes as a tiger cub breeding mill, PETA claims. One clip shows Ariel, a cub who couldnt hold her head straight and appeared to suffer from a spinal deformity or neurological disease. According to PETA, the tiger was forced to swim repeatedly and for a 10-minute stretch where she struggled to keep her head above the water. Other footage showed two cubs being taken from their mother hours after they were born. A dead newborn was left on the ground before eventually being bagged and tossed in the trash, PETA claims.
youtube
In response to the 2016 lawsuit, DCWT filed a counterclaim one month later, alleging fraud and tortious interference with business and contractual relationships over the undercover job.
PETAs lawsuit alleges that DCWTs practices violate federal law by distressing the tigers, causing them pain and discomfort, and risking illness and injury.
DCWT trainers often begin introducing the cubs for public play sessions when they are less than 4 weeks old, and the zoo utilized at least one cub when she was only 2 weeks old, the complaint states.
The zoo charges $39.99 for a 10-minute group encounter with baby tigers. During these sessions, as many as two dozen visitors are permitted to pet, play with, hold, or kiss the cubs.
Guests who prefer one-on-one sessions pay $299 per couple. The tiger swims are $300 per person or $1,000 for a family of four. According to the zoos website, the 30-minute encounters are in and out of the pool.
These encounters stop when the cubs are about 6 months old. To ensure a constant supply of cubs for use in its lucrative public encounters, [the zoo] breeds and purchases tiger cubs, the lawsuit states.
PETA has also accused DCWT of obtaining a one-week-old white tiger from an Oklahoma facility and leaving the mother behind. And the zoo separated at least three cubs from their mothers within days of birth in order to ship them to for-profit ventures, including an Ohio amusement park, court papers allege.
Prematurely separating the cubs from their mothers causes psychological and physical injuries, and stops them from engaging in species-typical behaviors, the lawsuit says. (In the wild, tiger cubs are not weaned until approximately six months old and remain with their mothers for nearly two years, PETA says.)
Cubs open their eyes for the first time six to 12 days after birth, and they have difficulty thermoregulating until they are several weeks old, the suit states. Mothers milk is crucial, because it has antibodies cubs immune systems lack; cubs dont make their own antibodies until theyre 8 weeks old.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums advises against hand-rearing tiger cubs, stating that it should only be done in emergencies, such as when parent-rearing is not possible due to maternal neglect or health reasons.
PETAs lawsuit says studies suggest that forcing animals to interact with audiencesas the Dade City zoos cubs do almost dailycauses them greater distress than if they were simply on display.
In July 2015, the USDA filed a lawsuit against the zoo over the same swim program, saying it violated the Animal Welfare Act.
In February of this year, a judge ruled that the swims violated regulations stating that young animals shall not be exposed to rough or excessive public handling or exhibited for periods of time which would be detrimental to their health or well-being.
The judge ordered the zoo to cease and desist the program, and leveled a $21,000 civil penalty and 60-day suspension of its exhibitors license. DCWT appealed this ruling, saying the swims are beneficial to both tigers and people. (A decision is pending.)
Kathy Stearns developed the swim program with veterinarians over several years as part of its tiger training program as a means to acclimate captive bred tigers to the presence of humans and to build a greater bond with the public in the animal world, zoo attorney William Cook wrote in court papers.
Stearns claims to limit the swims to three per day and says the cubs dont swim for more than a few minutes total. She said trainers check the tigers each morning, and that theyre checked again before swims, the appeal states.
You cant make it swim. I mean, its going to do what its going to do. Its never going to follow your pattern, Stearns testified at a hearing held in June 2016.
But the PETA lawsuit claims that, despite previous USDA citations, the zoo continued to prevent distressed cubs from leaving the swimming pool by dragging them on leashes, grabbing their tails, pulling them by the feet, and holding the skin of their necks.
DCWT often schedules back-to-back encounters, forcing the tiger cubs to interact with numerous people over the course of a day, the complaint alleges.
In a single day, zoo staff allegedly used the same tiger cub in at least two private encounters, two or more group encounters, and swim sessions with 17 guests, the lawsuit says.
During these encounters, the tigers often cry, growl, attempt to break free, and use body postures experts recognize as stress, court papers state.
PETA says witnesses saw staff restraining one desperate cub by pulling its leash and holding onto the base of its tail. The worker repeatedly pushed the cub down as it tried to climb on her to escape the pool, the complaint alleges.
In another session, an employee allegedly voiced concern that the same cub was getting too tired to play, but the tiger was kept in the pool and was panting audibly.
On a third occasion, Kathy Stearns tossed a flotation device into the water for a cub to play with, but the tiger swam away. When the animal escaped the pool, Kathy told a worker to just dump [the cubs] ass in the water, the lawsuit says.
PETA claims employees press the cubs to the ground by their sides or collars so guests can pet them during private and group encounters. Staff was also allegedly instructed to pinch their ears and noses to keep them in line.
They begin a lifetime of cruelty for these animals, PETA attorney Jenni James told The Daily Beast. Theyre taken days or hours after their birth, manhandled by humans, then put in a pool from which they cannot escape.
When they get too large, theyre discarded to cages. If theyre female, theyre forced into breeding for more tiger cubs, she said.
PETA has asked a federal judge to hold DCWT in contempt for shipping its tigers to Oklahoma, and has asked for a default judgment in its favor.
The Stearns family acts like theyre above the law, but its catching up to them, James said.
Money Trail
In October, the state of Florida also sued the Stearns, claiming they collected donations for their menagerie but instead used them for personal expenses including Randy Stearns wedding and Kathy Stearns bankruptcy.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says that Kathy and Kenneth Stearns registered Stearns Zoological Rescue and Rehab Center as a nonprofit in 2007. The firms registration expired in July 2016.
When Stearns Zoological attempted to register in February 2017, the agency asked for additional documents. The nonprofit withdrew its application one month later.
According to the lawsuit, Stearns Zoological was fined $500 for soliciting donations in September 2016 without being registered with the department. The company was also ordered to cease and desist from seeking contributions.
Despite the order, Stearns Zoological continued to seek cash through Dade Citys Wild Things, which was never registered as a charitable organization. (Stearns Zoological was tax exempt until May 2013, when the IRS revoked its status for failure to file a form 990 for three consecutive years, the lawsuit says.)
DCWT continued to solicit donations on its website, which falsely stated donations were tax-deductible, until at least March 2017.
We receive no state or federal funding. We survive strictly on the generosity of animal lovers like yourself who understand the importance of providing for these animals, the website said regarding its Endangered Species Conservation Fund.
Still, an analysis showed that $211,659 from the nonprofits coffers was transferred to an account for the familys peat business, from March 2016 to February 2017.
Kathy Stearns filed for personal bankruptcy in 2013 and was required to make monthly payments to a trustee. In February 2016, her bankruptcy case was dismissed for delinquency in payments. One month later, she filed a motion to reconsider the dismissal.
Days later, $17,500 was transferred to the turf business from DCWT, court papers allege. On the same day, a cashiers check was drawn from the peat company and made to the bankruptcy trustee. Soon after, a second cashiers check for $6,693 was made to the trustee from the same account.
Non-profit funds were intentionally transferred to the [turf account] so that they could be used to pay the delinquent personal bankruptcy payments of Kathryn Stearns, the state of Florida said in court papers.
In the meantime, Randy Stearns got hitched at Dade Citys Wild Things in March 2016. Nearly $10,000 of the nonprofits money went to the wedding, the lawsuit claims. The peat account listed a number of wedding expenses, including $3,229 total for catering, $1,544 for floral arrangements, and $1,492 for photography.
Despite Kathryn Stearns claims to the contrary, Defendants have held Stearns Zoological and DCWT out to the public as a not-for-profit entity and as a charity, the complaint states.
In a Sept. 12, 2017, video posted on DCWTs Facebook page, Kathy Stearns continued soliciting donations. She discussed the zoos financial problems and pleaded, I really need you guys to step it up a little bit. A dollar even helps please.
Its not the first time Kathy Stearns has faced trouble from Florida agencies.
In August 2011, she pled no contest to obtaining property or services using worthless checks. State law prohibits charities from allowing any of its officers or employees who plead guilty or no contest in the last 10 years to any crime involving fraud, theft, larceny, and the like to solicit contributions.
When Stearns Zoological filed an application for nonprofit registration with the state in December 2011, Kathy Stearns falsely stated no such plea existed, the lawsuit says.
The department became aware of the plea in May 2012. Three months later, the agency canceled Stearns Zoologicals registration and ordered the firm to cease and desist from collecting donations in the state of Florida.
In October 2012, the zoo filed a new application stating Kathy Stearns would not handle contributions. The request was eventually granted, after the nonprofit said Stearns would not have access to the funds.
Despite this, Kathy Stearns has continuously been involved in the solicitation of contributions and has had access to said funds, the complaint states.
Indeed, shes listed as an authorized signer on the nonprofits accounts, and shes the primary person for withdrawing funds, signing checks, or otherwise handling the donations, according to the lawsuit.
The department has asked a judge to order the Stearns to pay fines, and to permanently ban them from soliciting donations in Florida.
In court papers, the Stearns family denied their business account received their nonprofits funds. Soliciting contributions and depositing contributions into an account is not wrongful conduct, their lawyer wrote in court papers. The attorney declined to comment.
But the show has gone on at Dade Citys Wild Things. Kathy Stearns introduced her newest baby tiger, Noah, on Facebook last month, writing that he was available for encounters starting Nov. 28.
Noah was featured at Pasta with a Purpose, an event scheduled for Oct. 7 and that originally was billed as a benefit for DCWT with a silent auction and raffle. DCWT postponed the dinner, which was listed in the states lawsuit.
A Dec. 16 dinner for DCWT was $25 per ticket but didnt mention a charitable affair. Thank you for your patience on our reschedule date, DCWT wrote on its Facebook event page. We have been waiting for our newest arrival Noah to make sure he was available for the Pasta Dinner.
The next day, supporters posted photos of the event, including one of a woman bottle-feeding Noah in a little cage strewn with toys.
One attendee wrote, We had a great time and well see you at the next fundraiser! ....and I am quite sure before that, too!
