Today's episode covers the 1940s All American Girls Professional Baseball League, and the 2022 television series based on it, A League of Their Own.
Join us for a discussion featuring shoes deemed "excessively masculine-looking", perhaps too many women named Dottie, and more "close, life-long friends and roommates" than you can shake a stick at.

So qaf says that in order to get a really genuine Achilles and Patroclus relationship it would need to be adapted by a queer person and I agree with that but I also disagree with the idea that doing it non romantically would be queer baiting. Because I think there’s a lot of room to make something uncomfortable for straight people without it needing to be super ass gay. And honestly I think that’s what an adaptation needs. It needs to make straight people uncomfortable and to a degree I would like it to make allo gay people uncomfortable. it needs to make people ask “what is this?” And I think I would be happiest if Troy 2025 was written by an arospec person.

Listening to @queerasfact's episode about Elke Mackenzie, a trans woman who went to Antarctica in the 1940's.
Eli, the presenting host: "She was a lyconolgist."
Me: "WHAT?!? ARE YOU SAYING LYCON LIKE WEREWOLVES??"
Eli: "She was a botonist, specializing in lichens."
Me: "OH."
Eli: "Can I just say I am disappointed she didn't study werewolves?"
Me: "Same, Eli, same!"

Media rec: Queer as Fact
This is another note on sources and information! A lot of my cursory research comes from podcasts and archived material, the two types of media which are easily accessible at my workplace. My current podcast that I’ve been listening to is @queerasfact, as the literature reviews are extremely helpful and the podcast has a lot of basic information and further reading that I can do. It’s also very nuanced, and even when I’ve disagreed with the hosts, I’ve found their ideas to be reasonable and well thought out. I would highly recommend this podcast if you’re getting more into queer history but don’t know where to start.
While I don’t believe most people have such easy access to archives, podcasts are one of the most easily available forms of information on the internet, and this one is pretty trustworthy. Once I finish going through the backlog, I will most likely recommend another queer podcast.
Other ways to find easily accessed material are any university website, which will have at least some digitized content, worldcat, and jstor. Jstor is pretty pricy if you don’t have a university backing you up, but it is the best way I’ve found to do research.

Hope you don’t mind me asking but do you have a hiatus in terms of airing episodes? I notice that you normally do fortnightly episodes (from what I’ve noticed on the air dates), and sometimes the odd extra episode - anyway if you are on hiatus I hope you have a lovely break 🥰, if not all good - as I’ve said before your podcasts are a real treat
Thank you for your question!
Our current schedule involves doing one episode each, released twice a month for 4 episodes total, then taking a month off to recharge and research. This makes for 16 episodes per year, with our next episode intended to release on September 1st.
This has changed over time as our lives and schedules get busier and will in all likelihood change again at some point in the future! In the meantime, expect 4 episodes from Sep 1st to October 15th.

I'm so obsessed with how much information and developed insight these people share in a relatively small amount of time. I loved listening to this conversation about one of the shows I've fallen in love with

So.... In honor of the two month break, I redesigned the logo. I've always thought it was kinda bland. Otherwise, we should consider that this might be the beginning of the end. QAF has done alot for me personally, and for Queer history generally, but change comes for us all.
