Wearing Time: Carpe Diem and the Artistry of Anti-Fashion (Pt. 1 / 2)

In today's article, I want to tell you something about what I consider the most important and influential artist collective in avant-garde fashion.

A collective whose artists, their labels, and their design language have impressed me so much that it has completely changed my perspective on how clothing is created, what its purpose really is, and the impact it can have.

/// Carpe Diem, an avant-garde designer collective, was founded in 1996 in Perugia, Italy, by Maurizio Altieri. There are conflicting reports on the founding year, with sources mentioning 1994, 1998, and 1999 (the latter mentioned by Maurizio Amadei of M.A+ in a podcast with Lucentement). The visionary minds, particularly Maurizio Altieri, initially specialized in leather design, working with materials such as horsehide, cowhide, and anaconda.

These materials underwent intricate hand treatments, including washing, distressing, crushing, and burial in the ground for months. Originally concentrating on shoes, the brand later expanded its offerings to include clothing.

In 2006, Carpe Diem disbanded due to its increasing mainstream popularity, paving the way for other brands to follow its innovative path. This marked the peak of Carpe Diem's fame, with celebrities like Brad Pitt seen wearing their leather shirts. The surge in investor interest eventually led to Maurizio Altieri abandoning the label.

In recent years, Carpe Diem has been acquired by a Japanese company, resulting in the reissue of some designs and the introduction of new ones. However, signs indicate that Altieri and his colleagues are no longer actively involved in the design process.

Carpe Diem's influence extends to avant-garde brands like Carol Christian Poell, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Layer-0, and others, incorporating designs such as twisted seams, dropped-crotch trousers, asymmetric plackets, and J-cut pants. The brand's collections, including L'Maltieri (knitwear), Sartoria (made-to-measure), and Linea (jackets, pants, and T-shirts), aimed to diversify offerings.

The Linea collection, utilizing a 3x3 modular system, features interchangeable and conceptually connected laser-cut jackets, cotton pants, and T-shirts.

Sartoria, a customized line derived from Linea, maintains the "arte povera" aesthetic with crumpled, washed, and treated leather. Custom items required visits to a Parisian garage for fitting and digital photography, and delivery took 60 days, utilizing leather buried in the deserts of Afghanistan.

The distinctive feature of hanging garments on meat hooks pays homage to the label's origins as a leather house. The Sartoria line has evolved into the fifth line named Anatomica, propably my favorite collection of Carpe Diem.

Now, let's introduce the creative minds behind Carpe Diem in detail: Maurizio Altieri Maurizio Altieri, the visionary founder of Carpe Diem, is a perfectionist who brings an academic background in business and law to the world of fashion. His professional journey began at Chrome Hearts, where he honed fundamental skills in craftsmanship and leather treatment. In 1996, Altieri departed from Chrome Hearts to establish Carpe Diem, driven by a philosophy to craft timeless, useful, and handmade pieces from the finest materials.

Altieri's unique approach materialized through the application of distinctive treatments and washes, setting his creations apart. Notably, Maurizio Altieri rejects traditional editorials and advertising, firmly believing that the craftsmanship and quality of his pieces should speak for themselves. This commitment to craftsmanship is vividly demonstrated through a series of collections known as the "Continues Collection," showcasing an enduring dedication to the art of craftsmanship and the creation of timeless fashion experiences. Post-Carpe Diem, Altieri embarked on various projects, including m_moriabc, active in the fashion world since 2012.

Beyond demonstrating Altieri's exceptional talent for creating memorable brand names, m_moriabc is renowned for its handmade footwear crafted through special Norwegian craftsmanship. Altieri's ambitious pursuit involves capturing the essence of time itself in his creations, symbolized by the names A, B, and C, each representing distinct lines that embody aspects of the past, present, and future.

Avantindietro, launched in 2009, stands out as another notable project, offering a minimalist response to Carpe Diem's initial collection. In a collaborative effort two years later, Altieri partnered with Alessio Zero, the Italian designer behind Layer-O, to produce a small offering of shoes made from leather buried years earlier, adding a fascinating narrative to the creations.

Altieri's current venture, the art project Vnapersona, further underscores his dedication to pushing artistic boundaries. Through these endeavors, Maurizio Altieri continues to leave an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, weaving together elements of time, craftsmanship, and innovation.

Maurizio Amadei Maurizio Amadei played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive identity of Carpe Diem's leather products, encompassing accessories and jackets. During his tenure as a designer at Carpe Diem, Amadei demonstrated a unique exploration of human anatomy, sculpting pieces to follow the lines of the body's muscles. This innovative approach not only left an indelible mark on his designs at Carpe Diem but continued to influence his subsequent work.

Following the conclusion of Carpe Diem in 2006, Maurizio Amadei founded M.A+ as a spiritual successor to the renowned "Continues Collection." The unmistakable parallels between the two collections are evident in Amadei's inaugural M.A+ collection, where a standout piece was a large shoulder bag crafted from a single seamless piece of leather—a hallmark reminiscent of Carpe Diem. The introduction of the cross motif in this collection became the emblem of Amadei's design ethos, defining sought-after pieces like the 925 Sterling Silver Cross Belt.

M.A+ seamlessly carried forward many of the distinctive design techniques for leather while integrating cozy cotton fabrics into seamless one-piece silhouettes. Amadei's deliberate use of blunt knives for cutting and processing garment hems serves as a nod to Altieri's design philosophy. The overarching objective was to envelop the wearer in a second skin—an uncomplicated construction that is seamless yet refined.

In the present day, M.A+ stands out with flawlessly crafted garments in an array of materials such as silk and satin, garnering significant attention for their luxurious functionality. The allure extends to the patterned garments within the M.A+ collection, complementing the outstanding leather and shoe products. Amadei's design DNA is deeply rooted in principles of simplicity and minimalism, with stitches employed only when necessary. This commitment to minimalism is further emphasized by the absence of tags conveying fabric or size information—a testament to Maurizio Amadei's sophistication and meticulous attention to detail in his designs.

Simone Cecchetto Simone Cecchetto, during his tenure at Carpe Diem, brought an exceptional perspective and creative flair to the realm of shoe and accessory design. Influenced by his background in body art, Cecchetto delved into the "Second Body" project of Sartoria or Anatomica at Carpe Diem, an exploration of the concept of leather as a second skin on the human body.

His visionary approach extended to innovative ideas such as integrating chips into leather jumpsuits, enabling the tracking of digital images and movements—a seamless fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern technological elements.

Despite Maurizio Amadei's primary responsibility for leather goods, Cecchetto collaborated directly with Altieri to optimize their products. Despite lacking formal training as a shoemaker, Cecchetto's deep passion for shaping leather led him to assume the role of footwear design at Carpe Diem, allowing him to preserve the brand's legacy in shoe design.

Following the closure of Carpe Diem, Cecchetto sought refuge at Rick Owens briefly, only to realize a misalignment with Owens' avant-garde aesthetic. This experience served as a catalyst for him to chart his own course, resulting in the establishment of his label, Augusta, later renamed A Diciannoveventitre and A1923. The name Augusta pays homage to his grandmother, embodying the brand's principles of simplicity inherited from her. A1923 revolves around the principle of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy seeking beauty in natural irregularities.

Cecchetto's unwavering dedication is evident in the meticulous sourcing and processing of leather, compensating for his lack of formal training with experimentation and craftsmanship. A1923 stands out with its niche offerings, featuring handmade leather shoes and bags for men. The collection includes distinctive elements such as boots with double zippers and sneaker-boot hybrids, adorned with worn-out laces and intense colors. This testament to Simone Cecchetto's ability to preserve creative integrity while forging his own path underscores his continued contribution to the creation of influential and unique designs.

SG Beast Wars: Apparently there's a block preventing a beast mode's natural instincts from interfering with bots' higher functions, but apparently being in beast mode for days can make them succumb to feral instincts. Then the canon Maximals deleted the block and "embraced their animal sides". (And in Beast Machines where they become actually techno-organic, they can live on purely organic material but doing so makes them feral)

Imagine how that would go for the Predacons, who are almost all predators (a t-rex, a velociraptor, a scorpion, a giant tarantula, a giant black widow, and scorpion. Well, there's also Wasp and Terrorsaur, idk how Inferno counts and idk what Rampage's species eats). Most likely the feral dinos and spiders would end up trying to kill and eat the other ones, and propably each other. At least Wasp and Inferno would certainly be on feral spider menu.

That'd be very traumatic.

Then imagine having to live presumably the rest of your life with those predator instincts in your head. And then going off the deep end and possibly trying to kill your friends again in Beast Machines.

And in the latter, having to eat animals or plants to survive could be a whole different kind of horror. Normal cybertronians only eat minerals, so at least some might consider eating a plant to be the same as killing and eating an animal, and since cybertronians normally don't/can't eat living things at least some bots could view it as deeply morally wrong (and not just gross).

You're right on that, and iicr Rampage is a crab so that places him firmly in omnivore territory (probably carnivore leaning considering his size makes eating say algae less of an option) and Wasp and Terrorsaur would also be carnivores, so they're not to be excluded in the traumatic experience listed above. And Inferno, as a fire ant, is also an omnivorous altmode, but you can make the argument he's especially impacted by his altmode coding sooo there's interesting things to be had there (I'm remembering baseline tigatron and his role in the episode?)

Yeahhhh the instincts will very probably definitely fuck with them from that point on

I'm not sure if it's a given in the manga that they know or if it's really an issue that will come up sooner or later. I hope for the latter because even platonically it feels like there's still a lot untold between those two, and that they still need to have some kind of 'big talk'. An Imagine!

You and Demon!Spinel enjoying eachother's company - as well as Cake! (Doesnt matter if you bought it from the local bakery, or if you've made it yourself, though there are bonus points for the latter!) The Cake turns out to be great, Spinel even saying that she really likes it! Though, she is curious on what kind of Cake it is, though - what kind of ingridients were used? You tell her its some Angelic Cake, made with Vanilla, Chocolate, Cream, Plenty of Love, and even Holy Water!

And it's in that moment when she finally realises why she was feeling this bubbling, boiling sensation in her belly while she ate the Cake, and it doesnt take too long until the effects to kick in proper, quickly bloating her up thanks to the "allergic" reacton with the Holy Water ...And yet, despite this development, she keeps on enjoying the Cake - It's very sweet and delicious, and she admittedly cant help herself thanks to her sweet-tooth - That, and she's a Demon; it's only fair that she indulges in at least a little bit of gluttony, no? See how much she can eat before she gets truly full?

After this first incident, the shenanigans might only continue from there, especially when you realise that Holy Water cannot be diluted - You spiking her drink with only a drop of the Holy Water, just to watch her puff up, or as one event went; You adding a drop of Holy Water to a Pool right before she goes for a swim, and watching in amusement as she swiftly balloons up thanks to being in contact with it

Yet, some time, she practically pulls you aside for a private moment for just the two of you - for a moment, you're confused on why she has a giant pitcher of water, before it instantly clicks in your mind; You know it's Holy Water, and by the smug look in her eyes, you know that she knows precisely what she's doing Just by drinking that entire pitcher dry, she already has an adorable potbelly, and with the effect already setting in, it's already begining to bubble, boil, and bloat bigger - and as it continues growing further, she presses her tum against you, let you feel all that bubbling from within it, both to let you see how soft she is, and how much softer she'll become in mere minutes time

Most likely you'd end up pinned down thanks to her giant belly, which is still steadily growing bigger yet, as she giggles both from the feeling of her bubbling tummy, and your flustered reaction - She might propably just keep you there like that for a while longer, seeing as you dont exactly mind?

Gonna copy&paste what I sent in the groupchat earlier bc I can't be fucked to retype it all out:

Y'all, I just got up to start my laundry before [name] (laundry lady), and her laundry is already in there. At 8:25 am on a Sunday. If she starts this early every Sunday, that means she uses the laundry machines until 5-7 pm EVERY WEEK.

That is SO MUCH LAUNDRY. She doesn't have any kids. Why does she have so much fucking laundry

Either that, or she started earlier on purpose because last week I got in before her, which she propably didn't like ("or get here earlier" so I did. And she's still mad about it). So she got in earlier so I couldn't start before her.

Which is like. A WILD amount of petty. Why do you need the laundry machines ALL DAY on a Sunday every single week when there are 7 units and only one set of machines?

She told me to get there earlier so I did. And now she's starting earlier so I can't anymore. Like. What the fuck.

any chance of an au where to stop a very propable succession crisis from taking place? sometime before his death azulon decides to tie some loose ends and makes it so that azula and lu ten are engaged to be married when azula grows old enough. nobody is happy with this, including azulon.

i'll understand if you think this isnt an au you would want to explore, but i really love your character explorations and was interested in your input. like, so many relationships would change, most notably with azula and ozai, i imagine. it could be so horribly in a handbasket in such interesting ways.

So this is not the first time I have been asked for this AU, surprisingly enough: [Link].

I think for this AU to work, Azulon has to notice his younger son and acknowledge not only his ambition, but his capability. He has to be just slightly more perceptive than his canon counterpart, but not so perceptive as to know and understand his son enough to know how he would react.

And I can see him reacting in two ways, depending on how he views the position of consort to the Firelord. If he views it as functionally identical to being the ruler, or close to it, he would see this as his daughter being put above him in the line of succession, and she would shift from his darling adoring daughter who idolizes him and is thus perfect, to a rival. Given who Ozai is as a human being, he would immediately turn on her and resent her as bitterly as he does his brother, his wife, and his son.

If on the other hand, he views the position of consort to the Firelord to be nowhere near the level of actual Firelord, I think he would be liable to take this as an insult to himself and his daughter. Why, Azula deserves to be Firelord herself someday, as his heir, firmly behind him, how dare his father want to give her to Lu Ten as a mere bride?

In the latter case, little would change, because Lu Ten would be dead long before any of this comes into play, whether or not Ozai had a hand in his death. None of this would persuade Ozai notnto kill his nephew, and the Earth Kingdom military certainly would not care. The main impact, as you point out, is in Ozai's relationship with his daughter, and in the latter scenario, that relationship would change little if at all.

Camping trip

Caregiver : Hyunjin

Little : Seungmin

The members were all excited today. They had a weekend to relax and they had chosen to go camping! Everyone was running everywhere in the dorm, looking for the last stuff needed for the trip. Making sure they didn't forget anything. Seungmin had woken up already into his little head space as he was so excited for their trip. He hadn't been able to rest and slip for a long time now since they were always practicing all day long. He was happy he could take the weekend to fully relax and be little. When the group had finally packed all their stuff, they were ready to leave for a well deserved break. Hopping into the car, they all buckled their seat belts and the vehicul started.

The ride to go there was kind of long, almost two hours and for little Seungmin, it was the most boring thing. He had tried to sleep like Hyunjin had told him to, but he was too excited and couldn't keep his eyes close for more than three minutes. Seungmin let out a loud sigh in annoyance and Hyunjin put his hand on his baby's head to calm him down, stroking his hair. To the little's delight, they finally made it to the camp. He happily giggled and started swinging his legs back and forth, waiting for his caregiver to get him out of the car as he had fell deeper into little space. Hyunjin cooed at his baby and took him up in his arms, trying to help the others with all the stuff at the same time. By the time they finished installing the tents, Seungmin had fallen asleep on Hyunjin's shoulder. The day was coming to an end already and tommorow they had a big day planned. They had all agreed on going hiking. There was four tents so they had to sleep in pairs and once everyone had settled into their respective one, Hyunjin watched his little softly breath, already deep into sleep. He smiled and closed his eyes, drifting off pretty quickly.

The morning sun woke up Seungmin the next day. He shuffled into his slipping bag, trying to block the light and possibly be able to sleep a bit more, but it was no use. He looked around and beside him, he saw a sleeping prince. He smiled at the thought and observed his boyfriend's features a little more. He didn't want to wake him up, but he felt himself already starting to get bored. He turned his head again and found his plushie not far away from him. Taking it, he played with it for some time, but the boredum came back quickly so he finally decided to wake his caregiver up. Slowly approaching the latter, Seungmin put a hand on his shoulder and started shaking him slightly.

"Dada"

He whispered.

"Dada, Minnie bowred"

Hyunjin shifted in his sleeping bag, but his eyes remained closed.

"Dada"

Seungmin tried again, louder. A hummed was heard from Hyunjin as he finally opened his eyes, looking at his baby.

"What is it angel?"

He asked soflty.

"I bored"

"Did you try going back to sleep baby? It looks pretty early and you need to be in great form for today"

Hyunjin tried, but only got a whine in response.

"Minnie triwed but can't"

Now almost fully awake, the caregiver lifted himself up into a sitting position.

"Does Minnie want to try sleeping in dada's arms?"

Seungmin immediately nodded and slipped himself into his dada's sleeping bag. They both layed down again, the little pressed onto Hyunjin's chest, the latter holding him tightly. Fortunately, the couple soon drifted back to sleep, but sadly only to be woken up about thirty minutes later. Once everyone was up, the eight boys then started to get ready for the day. They had packed sandwiches and water bottles and Hyunjin didn't forget to bring a first aid kit, just in case. Finally, they were ready to leave and everyone was excited and cheerful. Seungmin more than everyone because of his little state of mind. Jeongin was happy when Minnie was little because he felt like he had a younger brother and really liked to take care of him. Along with Jisung and Felix, the maknae made Seungmin laugh and jump around, making him even more frantic then he already was. Seeing the energetic youngers, Chan decided they could take a longer road than the one they first intended to take. They had originally picked a three miles road, but they changed for a five miles one. They thought it would be alright, as they'd packed enough supply and left the camp early. They would be back by the end of the afternoon, before dinner time.

About two hours of hiking had passed before the maknae line, and Minho joining them, started to whine about being hungry. As it was almost noon anyway, the group stopped at a nearby table, which were dispersed everywhere around the trails, and took out the sandwiches. Each member took one and they begun to eat happily. After lunch, they all regained energy and were ready to continu, everyone chasing and teasing baby Minnie. Unfortunately, running around on a ground full of roots and rocks wasn't the best place for Felix' clumsiness as he fell, his knees hitting the ground harshly. Every members ran to him and helped him sit so they could see if he was okay. His knees were bleeding, but it was nothing serious. Although, Hyunjin was happy he had thought of bringing the first aid kit. He took it out of his backpack and opened it up, revealing band-aids, coton balls, sanitizer and lots of other useful supplies. Seugmin, understood Felix had hurt himself, but was still trying to calm down from all the excitement he had just lived. He tried to get the members attention, but they were all by Lix' side, trying to calm him down, but Seungmin needed attention, he wanted someone to take care of him too. Who was better at that then his dada? He then made his way towards Hyunjin and slightly taped his shoulder, getting no evident reaction, as the older was busy dressing Felix' wounds.

"Dada"

The little tried again.

"Dada Minnie wanna pway"

He exclaimed, tapping Hyunjin's shoulder again, but the latter shrugged his hand off.

"I'm busy Seungmin go elsewhere"

Seungmin was disappointed, he wanted his dada to pay him some attention.

"But dada, wanna pway"

Hyunjin became irritated and without looking at his little :

"Seungmin, I said go away! I am busy!"

The members didn't even seem to notice the small argument, as they were drying Felix' tears, or holding his hands, or saying calming words to the Australian. Seungmin was hurt. He didn't feel like his dada cared about him anymore. He slowly backed away from the group, looking around him. Minnie gonna go back to the camp and pway wif plushie. He thought to himself, looking at the track they came from, already starting to make his way in that direction.

A good twenty minutes later, Felix wasn't crying anymore and his knees were gently wrapped in bandages. The group thought it was a better idea to get back to the camp since one of the member was hurt. Starting to walk back, Hyunjin remembered the way he had talked to Seungmin earlier and felt awful. He started to look for him in hope of apologizing but the little was no where in sight. Panic slowly rose inside of him and he stopped, looking around again. It catched the attention of the others and they started questioning Hyunjin on what he was doing.

"Where is Seungmin?"

He faintly asked in a shaky voice. The other six boys looked around, imitating the scared caregiver.

"Where is he?"

He repeated hopeless.

"Where is my baby?"

He questioned again, his voice cracking at the last words as worried tears filled his eyes. Chan approached him and patted his back reassuringly.

"Don't worry, we're going to find him, he's propably not that far"

The others agreed and made groups to go look for the little. The leader stayed with Hyunjin while the rest of the members parted ways. The dancer was still out of it, continuously looking at all the trees surrounding them.

"It's my fault, I didn't take care of him when he needed me. Chan-"

He broke down in tears, the oldest holding him up so he wouldn't fall on the ground.

"It's going to be okay, everybody's looking for him"

Chan reassured, holding Hyunjin in a tight hug. The only way not taken by the rest of the group was the way back to the camping site so once Hyunjin had calmed down a bit, the pair started to walk that way. They had planned that if by 5pm, they still hadn't found Seungmin, they would reunite and ask for professional help, it was currently 1pm. They all hoped it wouldn't get to that. Hopeless, Hyunjin pitifully walked the trail beside a supportive Chan.

~Time skip again

The two hours back to the camp were exhausting for Hyunjin, for Chan too in fact, but the leader didn't let it show as he tried to cheer his member up. Arriving there with no one in sight made Hyunjin want to break into another wave of tears but before he could, a small figure catched his eyes. A little Seungmin was sitting in front of their tent, a plushie in his arms, singing to himself. Chan's eyes widened while a smile grew on Hyunjin's face. He immediately ran towards Seungmin, not caring about his tired legs.

"Minnie!"

He screamed. The little looked up and his eyes shone at the sight in front of him.

"There you are, don't ever do this again baby"

Hyunjin said, holding his baby in a tight hug.

"But Minnie wanted to pway dada"

The caregiver hummed, hugging him closer.

"I know baby, I should've listened to you. Dada is sorry he yelled at Minnie"

"Ish okay dada, wanna pway now?"

Seungmin asked, resting his head on his boyfriend shoulder.

"Sure, anything for you angel"

Seungmin giggled. Chan, behind them, called the others, telling them they had found Seungmin at the camp. Once everyone was reunited, they used the rest of the day to play games with Minnie, not leaving him alone one second.

But Jack was travelling with Teague since he was born. 20-21 years of experience (in his 20s) are more than most of the older pirates had. It took him 20 years to escape from the cabin boy rank and become a deckhand. As far as i am concerned, deckhand isnt a good/high rank considering his talent and experience. When Jack was seven, Borya said that he is a prodigy. It took him less than five (!) years to become a first mate and after a few months he became a captain in the EITC! Doesnt that show that Teague was holding Jack back? In a controlling and kind of abusing (like "look how useless you are!") way? I dont get the vibes of "i want to treat you equally and dont spoil you because you are my son". The diffrence between EITC and Teague is huge. And we should consider that Jack was propably working harder at the Troubadour since he was terrified of Teague and he wanted to please him. In EITC he was just working for money. He didnt want to prove anything to anyone

I agree that this was not the right decision by any means and that Jack was both being held back and hurting because of it

I mean by “I’m trying not to spoil my son” is that was what Teague was trying to. Not what he did. He absolutely held Jack back and hurt him with this, but that was essentially his reasoning

And Jack, while absolutely is more skilled, doesn’t have more experience until he’s old enough to actually contribute. I am unsure when the switch between ”you live here” and “you have a job” happened, however.

Back to my point about Teague and his treatment

A real life, less severe example is when your teacher is also your parent. You get two ends of the spectrum. “I spoil and let my child get away with anything” or “I am extremely harsh compared to other students, giving you far less praise and a lot more criticism because I don’t want to favor you”

Teague is an example of the latter category.

Its a spectrum, and Teague is definitely on the extreme end

Parallels - 1x09 - 3x02

Wait, was that scene in 3x02 a callback to this one in the Different but Same episode?

1x09 - Daniel’s expression turns all bashful after Johnny says his whole family, including him, are fundamentally bad people. 3x02 - Johnny’s countenance drops all at once when Daniel implies Robby has too many/much of Johnny’s [bad] genes.

I highly doubt Daniel actually planned to get his revenge on Johnny, just to get it about two whole seasons after 1x09. Man’s smart but not an evilish scheming bitch. Unless... In 3x02, they are just getting out of a tiring fight and endorphins are still ruling the both of them. As a result, Daniel might just have snapped because he can’t contain his emotions and throwing hard words at Johnny has always been easier than complimenting the latter. Propably easier than letting go, as well. Here’s my brain fart take of the day, since my computer won’t let me connect to my office’s VPN for my extra shift.

I hold all of my relationships very highly (all kinds of them), but I think the latter two are a tiiiny bit higher than the platonic ones.

16. Do theoretical ethical debates have any value? Is it important people discuss ethical dilemmas, e.g. the trolley problem?

I always love discussing these kinds of topics with my family. I find them very interesting because you get to see different point of views, hear (and maybe understand) other people’s ways of thinking. But don’t take it too seriously.

18. Are you religious? Do you think your religion is ‘correct’?

No, I don’t consider myself a religious person. I was baptized Christian orthodox but I don’t agree with many things of the church or the religion itself 🤷🏻‍♀️

28. Would you want to live forever? How about for a billion years, a million, a millennium, a century?

I used to want that a lot when I was younger (due to my obsession with the twilight movies and fear of death), but now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t think I’d want that. Especially if my favorite people were not with me 😢

40. What makes a person ‘good’? Are you a ‘good person’?

In my opinion, some important qualities of a good person are: empathy, compassion,honesty,good manners,kindness,politeness,selflessness,generosity (and many more that I’m propably forgetting rn). I think I am a good person (people that know say that a lot about me too).

TF Surge: Shockwave has the same body type as in Knightverse though with a different head, and he was also born one-eyed which is a normal variation. He transforms into a single-barreled siege howitzer, originally the turret was on his back but after losing his forearm in the war he sticks the turret on the stump. He's nonbinary, but only uses he/him. Shockwave's from a rich Tarnian family, he had two parents and perhaps multiple siblings (rich bots can afford to raise multiple sparklings, poor people can't). His parents also had siblings, it was a pretty large family. I'm not sure what exactly should happen to produce Shockwave's specific brand of fucked up, but his parents expected him to become famous or powerful, pushed him to do nothing but study whatever they'd approved him to study, and generally didn't let him just be a child.

As a teen he met Megatron in the library, he was there for science books and Megatron for poetry. They befriended each other and eventually started dating secretly from Shockwave's family, who would've lost their shits if they learned their child was with a *gasp* poor person. For the first time in his life Shockwave sort of opened up, but Megatron wasn't much better at emotions and neither of them got any help.

During the war, Shockwave also rises in the Decepticon alliance's ranks and becomes their head scientist. When the Arc and the Nemesis dissappears and everybody thinks either Megatron, Optimus, and The Matrix is lost, or the crews abandoned them to die. Shockwave slowly becomes convinced of the latter, angry at Megatron for leaving him to starve, angry at himself for loving and opening up to Megatron only for this to happen. Desperate to save the planet and their species, and to find a way to create life without The Matrix. Most of his war crimes propably happen in this timeframe.

He invents spark-splicing and creates Shockblast and Sixshot who are seen as abominations because of their unnatural origin, Shockblast doubly so because instead of growing from living metal he was cold-constructed (a new, foreign concept in Surge) into a copy of Shockwave's body. This treatment and Shockwave's poor parenting are why they're fucked up (Shockwave isn't abusive, but he's emotionally stunted/consticipated, doesn't know what good parenting is, expects them to do something useful at a young age though they are living in post-apocalypse, and obviously prefers Sixshot).

During those decades the war on Cybertron fizzles out, most Autobots and Decepticons also thinking they've been abandoned to die and deserting, defecting, or otherwise turning to Shockwave in desperation. Not necessarily a good idea, because he's also desperate and we know how he is about ethics and morality. He knows what he's doing is evil and knows how he propably will be remembered, but he doesn't care because the ends justify the means and his reputation does not matter, especially when the entire species' future is at the stake. He tries to crush the reminaining tiny Autobot resistance, and if i have other Decepticon warlords (Straxus? Megaempress?) controlling parts of cybertron he fights them too.

Then contact with the lost ships is regained, and when the bots on Earth return to Cybertron they make a truce. Shockwave is expected to surrender. The Matrix still exists. Everything he did was pointless. If Megatron is alive, Shockwave is also still mad at him. Irrationally about the crash leaving him thinking Megatron had abandoned him, and more understandably about the war ending and all the war crimes he committed being revealed pointless.

He's angry. He still has bots loyal to him. He still controls the whole Cybertron, or a large chunk of it. The war is not over.

His design sounds interesting, I always liked his Knightverse design

Explanation for the gun arm makes sense

Being forced to mature too fast will indeed fuck you up, I'm suspecting considering his complicated relationship with emotions in most media and how you suggested he is autistic in Surge that Shockers possibly faced ableism and emotional abuse (also probably verbal. That's common as fuck.) from his parents. But hey that's just a theory based on what I'm observing here and my own research

Shockwave and Megatron sound like they have such an interesting dynamic, especially with how resentful it seems to turn on Shockwave's side after the ships vanished.

Make sense makes sense

So he's probably thinking he's not as bad as his parents, but he's still perpetuating the cycle in his own way because he never got help and has no frame of reference for what the hell a healthy parent/child dynamic is.

The frantic game Shockwave is playing here is fascinating, the road to hell is paved with good intentions no matter how much he tries to justify it.

Makes sense that there would be decepticon warlords that have a tense at best and outright violent dynamic with Shockwave and his leadership.

Oh he is having so many feelings over this. So many feelings.

The war is indeed not over, it has simply changed in a new direction.

[v] If you had to change the genre of your WIP, what would you change it to? I am temped to make it a standard heist, but also...werewolves.

[v] What’s your favorite writing POV? First person? Third person limited? One or multiple POV’s? Definately third person, limited or omniscient depends on 10 different factors, the number of fucks i give involved. And I've found I work better with multiple povs - although people with 5-6 povs? Gods. I don't know how they do it.

[v] Have you thought of a title for your WIP? How did you pick it? The Decay of a Star is very much not the final title, so no.

[v] How easy is it for you to come up with outfits for your OCs? Very, very difficult. So I just don't do it.

[v] Who is the oldest OC in your WIP? (Either in-universe or when you made them.) Flare/The Captain, who is at her roaring 120s

A lot of my online social sphere was caught talking about new Netflix exclusive show. If you read tittle of this post, you already know which show we are talking about but in case you haven’t caught up on the current discussion, Devilman Crybaby is modernized retelling of Go Nagai’s original 1972 manga which has served as an inspiration for a lot of more recent works like Neon Genesis Evangelion. The show is a story about Akira Fudo, who by the scheming of his childhood friend Ryo becomes the titular Devilman after a demon tries to posses his body. As a devilman he fights against other demons who try to take over the world by taking over people who seemingly revel in their primal urges revolving around sex, drugs and violence. This sounds pretty straight forward premise for a good old superhero show, but, as you propably can guess from the Eva connection, is much more complicated than that. If you are looking for something to watch and don’t mind dark stories, it is a solid watch with good production values and excellent soundtrack. However, I feel personally pretty conflicted after watching it. (Continued after the break, but if you have not seen the show and are interested so see it, I recommend you go watch it first. It is ten episodes long so it’ll take an afternoon).

Before we move on, I should point out that I saw this show only once, and I consider myself to be very casual anime fan. Thus I don’t claim to be a some sort of master thinker with all the knowledge who knows what everything means and all that. That in mind you propably shouldn’t take anything I say as a truth, just as opinions of a guy who spends too much time thinking this stuff and watching some youtube videos about it by guys with much better delivery.

Anyhow, to summarize the plot, basically after a half of a series full of monster of the week style setup Ryo reveals the existence of the demons to whole world. Since these demons can impersonate anyone perfectly, this leads to deepening paranoia in general public and officials, which reaches is full point when Roy reveals that basically anyone who feels alienated form the society some way may become a demon (which isn’t exactly true), using Akira as an example. Akira’s friend and love interest Miki tries to defend him on the internet, but this backfires and while Akira is away, a lynch mob comes and basically kills every single character of the main cast of in the very brutal way, including Miki who’se head is put on a head of a stick. Akira tries to hurry back to save Miki, but he is too late. He sees the mob dancing in very tribalistic manner around a bonfire with her head, which is the last straw on his already strained psyche, and he ends up killing the mob with fire.

Akira confronts Ryo who turns out to be actually Satan who’se subconcious plan all along was to free demons from their imprisonment, which was orchestrated by the God himself. Akira promises to kill Satan himself, and he meets up with other devilmen, whist demons are killing last of the humans. The massive battle ensues and during it everyone else except Satan and Akira dies. They lay on the desolate beach (that looks pretty End of Evaesque) and Satan is reminiscing about his and Akira’s past together whilst hinting he has always loved him. Satan realizes that Akira doesn’t speak only to find out he is dead, and first time in his life he feels sadness which he doesn’t seem to understand, all the while god is wiping earth clean again.

Saying that show is dark would be an understatement. From the get go it is filled with gratuitous sexual imagery and violence. Which given what show is about (or atleast my read on it) makes sense. In it’s core, Devilman Crybaby is about power, and humanity’s relationship to it. Basically, before humanity’s rise, demons roamed the world and basically hunted and dominated each other. When Satan arrived, he fell in love with these creatures, but god wiped them underground, and thus, humanity slowly became to power. But demons were completely gone, and time to time they popped up causing havoc, until they finally took over and destroyed humanity.

The demons are basically stand in for powerful individuals like kings or bankers, who are doing whatever they want with the power they have, as opposed normal powerless humans who only can really achieve anything with co-operation. But instead co-operation, the people are driven to fight each other whilst the demons are gaining more power. Mean while, the devilmen represent those who have the power but instead of their own gain, they are willing to use it for good of others. And it is story about these individuals that the show tells. A very cynical and pessimistic story, since devilmen are unable to stop demon plan, whilst being rejected by humans for being demons. This infighting between this groups and their conflicting desires and views ultimately lead destruction of everything, and those few who are left only realize what was lost too late.

And boy, does this feel topical given the political climate we currently live in. Despite originally being manga from 70’s, this story feels more relevant than ever. It is no wonder that this is the point in time we get a modernized remake of this story, with more modern storytelling techniques and style compared to the original. Which introduces some interesting results when looking this show as a whole. The thigh focus on the characterization really drives home the horror of the situation perfectly, but also makes the show downright painful to watch given that every single character goes couple Game of Thrones seasons worth of suffering before their horrible fates. And none of these people deserve what is happening to them, which is the point of the whole show.

That said, I am not really fan of the point since I also believe humanity can be better than what this show depicts it being. It may take significant work and effort from our part, but I think we can defeat these proverbial demons this show depicts us loosing to. I get the pessimistic cynicism was the intended tone of the makers of the show and this show captures it perfectly, but I am not the one who thinks cynicism is really productive in the end. So, I prefer look this show as a warning of what may happen if we don’t get our shit together.

I’ve spent a lot of words talking about symbolic meaning of the show, because I think that’s how it works best. Since without that layer this show ends up being about bunch of likable people suffering and dying horribly, and that just left me feel really sad and miserable, thinking all the interesting possibilities letting these characters live would have created. Without it’s meta textual layer, Crybaby would just be tragedy that lacks any point, since only surviving character, Ryo, basically gets shafted when it comes to characterization compared to rest of the cast.

So, I think it is easy to see why do I feel conflicted about this show. With all the production values it has, it either ends up being a message I don’t agree with or a hollow tragedy, with former only slightly more satisfying than the latter. I am glad I saw it, but I doubt I will remember it as a similar kind of fond appreciation like I do Eva, which target’s it’s pessimism to a target that truly deserves it’s contempt, rather than whole of the humanity. We as a species might be crappy, but not totally condemnable.
