Funny how To Kill a Kingdom and books by Alexandra Christo are like my third biggest interest but I never get to talk about it. Probably cause it's the most dead out of all my fandoms but like sad.
Lira will forever be amazing. Time to reread her book and feel all them emotions again.

OK, I just finished Princess of Souls by Alexandra Christo and god was it worth the months of waiting!! the story follows a similar formula to "to kill a Kingdom" but also has some unexpected twists.
though I am curious, it's in the same universe as to kill a Kingdom but I'm not completely sure it happens in a later date. because we do get honorable mentions of snowy mountains and princes of gold and sirens, but their all too vague
but anyway, another wonderful book

Title: Princess of Souls
Author: Alexandra Christo
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2022
Genres: fiction, fantasy, retelling, romance
Blurb: For sixteen years, Selestra Somniatis has been trapped in a castle on the Floating Mountain, preparing to take her mother’s place as King Seryth’s right hand. Tied by blood to steal souls for the immortal king of the Six Isles, the Somniatis Witch foretells the deaths of participants in the Festival of Predictions. To outrun your fate is to save your soul and steal the king’s immortality...but if you die, your soul is forfeit. Though thousands have tried, nobody has ever beaten death. As a soldier in King Seryth’s army, Nox Laederic is an unlikely candidate for the Festival, but he has no plans to die at the hands of the king or his witches. His plan is more akin to violent revenge: steal the king’s immortality and kill the entirety of his court, starting with Selestra herself...but when Selestra touches Nox in her very first prediction, she sees her own death alongside his. Their fates are unmistakably intertwined, and Selestra is no longer safe in the only home she’s ever known. Nox and Selestra will have to enter a turbulent alliance in order to survive long enough to free the Six Isles from King Seryth’s clutches and escape the new fate that hunts them.

Some work I did got spoiled this weekend by Hot Key Books! :) The cover for Princess of Souls by Alexandra Christo. Something different than what I usually paint, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Design by Lisa Horton. Illustration by Rengin Tumer (me). In-house Design by Dominica Clements.

Instead of rereading To Kill a Kingdom I chose Princess of Souls instead. I saw person claim they're too similar and I get they have the same formula. But Lira and Selestra have very different arcs, they both are redemption arcs but play out differently enough.
I wanna reread all the Alexandra Christo books and then see if the local library has The Night Hunt which I have not read yet. I will post my thoughts about them when I feel like.

Princess of Souls by Alexandra Christo - blurrypetals review
originally posted aug. 6, 2023 - ★★★☆☆
Man, I'm bummed by how mid-tier this was!
To Kill a Kingdom was one of my favorite books the year I read it, which was a big deal, seeing as I read 235 books that year! I also am a huge fan of the Rapunzel story so I was really stoked to read this one!
...and it wasn't terrible, but man, it had no chance of living up to that hype. The characters felt like nothing more than their archetypes, very bland and unspecial, the sort of couple I will easily forget the names of in a few weeks, maybe even days.
I also kept wondering if/when this might tie into To Kill a Kingdom, especially after there were goddamn pirates and we still didn't get to see or hear about Elian! Goodreads seems to suggest these even take place in the same universe so I'm just confused here.
Anyway, super mediocre, not terrible, but certainly by the numbers and pretty forgettable. Damn shame.
