He’s no doubt his age; he can tell by the smoothness of his skin, the muscles in his biceps, the way his hair is swept back in a style not unlike a young James Dean, exemplifying the cut of his cheekbones and the sharpness at his jaw.

As he approaches the bar, quietly since he’s not wearing his shoes, he blurts it out— “Where’s Sue? Is she alright? She’s not dead, is she?”

The barkeep, wide-eyed at first but quickly growing amused, smiles at him, eyeing his dress, tousled wet hair and smudged makeup with a curl in his lip. “Darling,” he says, completely ignoring his question, “a leather jacket with a dress like that? Are you mad?”

But when he finds a box containing details of the biggest unsolved crime in Luna Hills, he and his friends decide to sneak out for one last adventure before they're all off to college. That is, as long as the mayor, who also happens to be Louis' mother, doesn't stop them before they discover the truth.

Being trapped inside of an arcade with him was hell and it hadn't been a full minute.

I think what sells today more than anything is hype.

The top song today is a song called Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter. It is horrendous to say the least but every Taylor fan thinks it’s great so it must be.

Stan Twitter is about feeling good about yourself by living vicariously. It’s about feeling a sense of achievement because the artist you stan is topping charts, it somehow creates a sense of validation.

My cousin who is a heart surgeon migrated to US and the thing he said he noticed the most about Americans is that they seem to be taught from when they are young to keep repeating that they are the greatest. That’s what they take the most pride in, it’s not any sort of personal achievement, it’s just being born in a specific geography. It is culturally very different to other countries.

I saw a tweet from one of Harry’s fan where they called him the greatest performer and it was just a clip of him running from one side of the stage to another pumping his arms as if he had scored the winning goal in a World Cup final. It was very jarring to me to look at. There was no grace, no beauty. It made me think, why does this person think this is the greatest spectacle in the world? Have they really not seen any performer be better than this? Maybe they find this extravagant celebration of an imaginary achievement enticing because they relate to it but at the end I think it’s because of the hype around it.

For now I am very happy that Louis has claimed to not run after the hype. He has not done a single thing musically since his first album which has made me question his intentions. That may change in the future but atleast for now I can see only growth in his music.

I kept nodding my head to your ask because I agree with so much of it.

The political philosophy of “might makes right” is having the most catastrophic, morally repugnant exhibition on the international stage right now. Members of the USA Congress and Senate proudly encourage racism against immigrants, transphobia, misogyny, the limitation of reproductive rights, and many are ready to welcome back an ex-President who tried to overwhelm federal law with vigilante violence.

Social media can be destructive to many creative arts. Literacy and close reading of the creative arts are considered esoteric and cringey these days.

The New York Times pop music section is basically a marketing extension of big labels and huge artists. They’re less obvious than Rolling Stone but really not that different. They run the same glammed up, superficial fluff pieces that would be laughable a generation ago.

One thing that both the Euphoriazine review of Live and PositiveSteven (YouTube reactor) commented on is Louis’ self-criticism:

The sheer adulation of the crowd is decidedly earned. Tomlinson has worked hard to prove himself, despite never having lacked the talent. Perhaps merely the confidence that he could do it, would do it, has done it. Nevertheless, he’s been open about the tension between his own love for music, and his at times debilitating need for perfection. As he’s settled into his career, a quiet undertone of determination and grit, of relief and fulfillment – of gratitude remains in every single show.

Remember back in 2019-2020 when interviewers would ask Louis to describe how he felt after releasing the album, and he used the word “relief” repeatedly? It seemed as if he was the main gatekeeper of his music— and then he turned around and found Walls not up to his standards. This is a man who has never said a negative thing about colleagues, ex-bandmates, or fans, but he chases perfection as if his life depends on it.

Do you remember an IGTV that Louis posted when Walls came out, that showed him holding the first pressed vinyl of his first solo album, and he choked up, saying softly, “History.” Then he quickly cleared his throat and said, “Sorry.”

I think about that moment all the time— Louis’ internal and external struggle to finally have something to show for his work, his intelligence and creativity, but feeling so incredibly exposed.

And so far, Louis has never, ever disappointed. Faith In The Future exceeded every single expectation and was miraculous in first listen. Live shows that our first experiences were spot on. He will never disappoint.

It also means the music industry has had to adapt away from contracts based on ownership. There are two kinds of rights at stake here: the rights to the master recordings of an artist’s work, and songwriting rights, known as publishing. One senior music publishing executive says their part of the business was ahead of the curve, explaining that publishing deals tend to work on exclusive licensing terms or retention periods. “Publishers pivoted from a rights-ownership business to the servicing of rights,” they say. Those retention periods are getting shorter, they add, down from about 25 years three decades ago to between 12 and 15 years today.

David Martin, CEO of the Featured Artists Coalition, says there is “a propensity towards owning rights” for artists, but some acts are still prepared to sign away ownership for what they think might be their only shot at the big time. “We have members who are still signing major label deals,” he says. “Some of the terms in some of those deals are terms that we’d expect artists to be thinking very carefully about.”

Message [,Brian - a partner at Courtyard Management] says he steers acts away from ownership-based contracts. “We have a default position that we won’t advise our artists to do life-of-copyright deals,” he says. “It’s not that we wouldn’t do them, but our strong advice would always be to come up with a licence arrangement of some description.”

This is the ideological underpinning of BMG and AWAL (Artists Without a Label), which is now under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment. “The philosophy is flipping the relationship,” says Alistair Norbury, president of repertoire and marketing at BMG UK. “There had to be a fairer and more transparent way to work with the creative community.”

Acts on BMG’s roster – notably Kylie Minogue, Suede, Sigur Rós and Louis Tomlinson – are on licensing or assignment deals, so ownership of the recordings eventually reverts to them. “They want to be with a record label where they have creative control and ownership coming back to them at some point,” says Norbury.

In light of all this, the majors increasingly have to offer more flexible deal terms. UMG has both Virgin Music Label & Artist Services and Ingrooves. Warner Music Group has Ada.

Former One Direction star Zayn has signed a new deal with Mercury Records in the US.

Music Week has confirmed that the UK affiliate will be Island Records. A new single is expected this summer, and his return was teased on Instagram.

Zayn Malik was previously signed to RCA for recordings.

Earlier this year, Malik signed to UTA for agency representation across music, film and television.

Mercury relaunched last year as an imprint of Republic in the US.

“As soon as Zayn and I met, I knew we had to work together,” said label president Tyler Arnold. “I was blown away by the new music, but just as impressed by his vision, drive and spirit. We’re honoured he and his team have joined us at Mercury Records. We’ve got an incredible opportunity to tell the next chapter of his story together.”

"When Tyler first played me the music I was totally blown away," said Island president Louis Bloom. "I knew we at Island had to do everything we could to be involved. This is Zayn on top of his game and this next chapter is going to take him to the next level. Malik was quick out of the blocks in terms of solo success. Having exited One Direction in 2015, he even beat his old group to No.1 in early 2016 with solo single Pillowtalk (1, 499,632 sales to date – Official Charts Company).

Malik’s debut album Mind Of Mine reached No.1 in March 2016. It has 139,080 UK sales to date.

Although he has registered multiple charting singles, his two follow-up albums failed to make a lasting impression in the UK. Nobody Is Listening peaked at No.17 in January 2021, while the accompanying single Vibez made the Top 50.

Nevertheless, Zayn still has 22.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and his team will have big ambitions for his next campaign.

It must only be a few seconds but it feels like a lifetime before Harry turns off the water and turns to face him again. He swallows and shrugs, “Uh, yeah, maybe.” He meets Louis’s eyes only briefly before checking his watch. “We should go soon,” he says turning to leave the kitchen. “I’ll grab you a jacket.”
