MWW Artwork of the Day (3/31/22) Fanny Fluery (French, 1848-1920) Portrait of an Unknown Woman (c. 1875-85) Oil on canvas, 88.9 x 65.4 cm. Private Collection
Fleury was perhaps the most successful female exhibitor in the history of the Paris Salon, having works accepted consistently from 1869 to 1882, and in many afterwards.  She studied with Jean-Jacques Henner (French, 1829-1905) and was later accepted to the École des Beaux-Arts as a student of Carolus-Duran (French, 1837-1917), where she was a classmate of John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) Under Carolus-Duran, Fleury distinguished herself as a portraitist. Her large-scale work "Bebe dort" (1884) exhibited in the Salon of 1884 along with "Madame X" by her classmate John Singer Sargent. Both pieces belie the the influence Corolus-Duran, who often combined monumental human figures in contemporary settings.
For more of this artist's work, see this MWW Special Collection: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1415339218571443&type=3

12: Case Study Two: Environmental Portrait Photographer - Arnold Newman
Who Was Arnold Newman?
He was an American Photographer and known for his environmental portraits of Artists and Politicians. Newman had photographed top profile people such as John F Kennedy, Pablo Picasso and Marilyn Monroe.
During my research into Environmental Portrait Photographers, Newman caught my eye for his use of black and white beautifully captured images. I originally through the term or style of portraiture ‘Environmental Portraits’ was a new style founded in the 21st Century, I was wrong and very intrigued that I in fact never came across these types of portraits before.
Image One: John F Kennedy (1953)
John F Kennedy probably the most or one of most famous presidents of America. He was extremely famous for two reasons not including the fact that he was the president. He was shoot, which is still one of most talked about events to ever happened in the history of America. John F Kennedy and his brothers where highly linked to the death of Marilyn Monroe.
The location of this image is the White House as this is where the president of America lives for the years that they are elected president.
It is a very causal image, I like it. But Kennedy looks extremely deep in through, as if he looking out onto his America thinking about events that are happening. Negative things. He looks stressed, which reflects on his job and gives us the viewer an inside to what it feels like to be the president of one of the biggest countries in the world.
I like this photograph as a whole, it gives us an experience and tells us alot.

Image Two: Pablo Picasso (1956)
I am so interested in this image as I love Picasso. Everyone knows Picasso's work. But very few understand the idea of Cubism or what he was trying to achieve in his work.
I feel you get an experience with this image as it is a document of behind the scenes into Picasso’s studio, where he produced his most famous works. Everyone can easily go see his work in a gallery The Met, Tate etc but it isn’t everyday you get to see an image that reflects on the behind the scenes of Picasso working life as an artist.
I really do enjoy how this image is structured even if you didn’t know that this was Pablo Picasso, you could probably guess due to the Cubism paintings in the background. The photograph reflects on Picasso's identify very well, his identify is a cubism painter the co-founder of the movement and this element is shown in the background of the image.
The photo is captured very simply it is just structured extremely well it is why this photo is a success.

Image Three: Marilyn Monroe (1962)
I’m not 100 percent convinced that I like this image, It looks like a document shot from a movie rather than a ‘Environmental portrait’.
I do enjoy the black and white tones in this image, I find they grab the attention of the audiences and pull them in to study the photograph. The photo is not busy, and would be okay for the eye to rest and study the picture alright.
The background or the Environment of this image looks like it is set in a house with images hanging on the wall in the background. The two figures set in the foreground one of them being Marilyn they look like they are in some sort of deep conversation.
In Conclusion i don’t think this is the strongest image of Newman’s and is not in the category of terrible either.
Tumblr media
Newman’s Environmental Portraits are structured very simply, I do like this as the elements in the image can speak loud and clear. I think the subject being the person in each image tells us their story and this reflects on their identity as an individual.
