HUFFINGTON POST
A story recently published with the Huffington Post “How Harris County, Texas, the execution capital of the country, sends poor people to death row. I photographed portraits of Obel Cruz-Garcia who was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing a six-year-old boy, a crime he maintains he did not commit.
He was appointed a lawyer named Skip Cornelius, who failed to do basic defense work on the case and met his client only a handful of times outside of the courtroom. On almost every day of Cruz-Garcia’s death penalty trial, Cornelius billed multiple hours to other cases. Cruz-Garcia is now represented by excellent post-conviction lawyers who have done the research and investigation Cornelius should have done — showing how competent legal defense likely would have persuaded jurors to spare Cruz-Garcia’s life.
I also photographed renowned Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis who has spent decades fighting to improve the county’s indigent defense system.

Jessica and I have worked together several times now, and each time I have learned something new. The first, a better understanding of my work and process through the eyes of another, then an exploration of photographic style, and most recently a chance to be more relaxed with my tying and try out some techniques I gleaned from sources documenting a traditional Japanese martial art’s style of binding with rope.
When I do photographic work with people multiple times, it becomes easier and more natural to get into a flow state together, as we have already built rapport and learned how to work with each other. You may find it hard to believe, but even I have some feeling of nervousness when practicing shibari with someone new. I’m an introvert and I tie more reservedly with someone new, so its always a joy to work with someone who I already “know.” In this case, it was easy to dive in and just focus on tying.
I had the idea for a somewhat minimalist approach compared to what I did earlier in the year, and that took shape in the form of a polygon-back tie (this was inspired by a historical method), and a decorative pentagram harness. Aesthetically, my work tends to reflect my current mood, lighter or darker. It has been dark times lately, and I look forward to that pendulum swinging back.
If you need some respite, I’d like to invite you to join me in the Garden with Jessica.
I’m planning a trip to Boston and New York later this year, please reach out if you are curious about booking a session or want to try to get a coffee while I’m in town.
Thank you for reading, to see the full session please visit my journal:

Nice to end the week with some new work I can finally show. Last fall I had the privilege of photographing the cool and stylish Rozier-Byrd brothers for @bostonu. Trevor and Terence are graduates of @bostonuniversityschooloflaw and Timothy graduates this year. I can't tell you how happy I was when they arrived wearing matching suits. And a lesson for me; the day before the shoot I thought about emailing them and asking them to wear matching suits but didn't because I thought it might be weird to ask three adults to wear matching clothes. And then they showed up matching and looking great and I realized it wouldn't have been weird and I should have asked. But thankfully their own fashion sense was good and the shoot better for it. So don't be afraid to ask. It was a good reminder for me. On shoots I'll often say to people I'm photographing, it's my job to ask, it's your job to say no. I ignored my own mantra but they saved the day. Thank you sirs! And thanks to @hautedamned for the assignment and @johnnytangphoto for the assist.
