What kind of bug do you think bugza is? In my head, he's some kind of phototactic insect hybrid, like part moth. Just for the funny thought of bumping into lights, you know?
for me he is some kind of beetle, currently I draw inspiration from Golden tortoise beetles and tansy beetles (mostly comes from elytras being part of beetles and weevils)
though I'm not one to stick to one thing lmao, I do love me some hybrid designs, after all my design still has some aspects of antza

By the time Bobby stopped searching the sea of faces on the sidewalks, even the rise of the pavement meeting his feet felt as slanted as his worldview. Donny wasn't there, of course - finding him was just another item on a long list of things that Bobby seemed to have been failing at for the past year.
Or perhaps for his entire life. He was no longer sure how much he gave a damn, either way.
When his feet stopped moving, though, he heard Frank's voice again - proof that there was at least one thing he still gave a damn about:
"Just take Eames to a motel and get it out of your system!"
Frank had no idea how close he had come to death; Bobby had actually felt the bones of his brother's neck snapping like dry kindling crying out for flame. Most everything else that Frank ever garbled out was just noise, just so much static that never hit home because they were brothers by blood but hardly knew each other at all.
But somehow . . . somehow Frank had known about Eames, as soon as he'd laid eyes on her down a busy street. He had known, and Bobby was angry and frightened at being recognized, being seen by his brother that way. It was as if Frank had reached inside his head and pulled out the exact words that Bobby would mutter to his own self sometimes. When he caught himself gazing at his partner too long, or sitting at home on a Saturday night with his hand creeping past the waistband of his pyjamas.
Just get it out of your system.
The idea only worked, however, if he believed it was just about sex. Bobby wasn't sure there was a big enough fool in all of New York to believe that one.
He stopped walking, vaguely aware of the crowd now parting and flowing around the obstacle he had become. The lights hurt his eyes, still bothering him since Tates (among many other things), as he tried to identify just where he was.
Instead of familiar landmarks, what loomed out at him was a garishly lit sign for some kind of strip club, and suddenly Bobby Goren was dying for a drink. Bobby was parched, as a matter of fact. So he followed the sign inside, just another doomed phototactic creature in the Summer night.
The music in the club was muted, a mid-range warble just loud enough to discourage real conversation, and a couple girls were dancing on a small stage while most were smiling politely in booths with the clientele. Bobby didn't really register any of them yet, too fixed on bellying up to the bar. He ordered three shots of expensive Scotch and knocked them back in succession before sliding a platinum credit card to the bar tender. Nodding his head in the direction of an empty booth, he told the man to keep drinks coming, then went to take a seat.
Bobby'd hardly been seated long enough to contemplate his drink when the first woman approached him. She was tall, with long black hair and high breasts. He greeted her politely, even managed a fascimile of a smile, but she drifted away quickly when he didn't ask her to take a seat. A redhead followed behind, then a Black woman with a long, swinging braid, and the scene replayed itself twice more.
"I suppose you're going to send me away, too, huh Lurch?"
Bobby startled at the sound of the voice - nearly convinced it was his partner, it was so similar. It wasn't Alexandra, however the woman who stood across the table was also petite, with blonde-leading-on brunette hair and a smile like Eames': cute yet somehow stern.
"Lurch?" he echoed.
"Because you're so tall," she chuckled.
"What's your name?" Bobby asked, sure that it would be Alex in some cruel twist of Fate.
"Kelli." He gestured at the free space alongside him in the booth, and she took her time sliding into it. "Unless, of course, your wife's name is the same."
Draining his rum and coke, he signalled for another. "I'm not married," he said simply.
"Really? You look miserable enough for it," Kelli responded, and her eyes lit up when it got a breathless chuff of laughter out of him.
"Would you like a drink?"
Bobby wasn't the least bit surprised when she ordered a Bourbon.
"So. Want to tell me why the long face?" she prodded.
Bobby took his time before answering with, "I lost someone."
"Girlfriend?"
He shook his head.
"Wow," Kelli exhaled over her Bourbon, "for a guy with no wife and no girlfriend, you look real bad off. Must have been some loss."
"It was . . . someone I could have saved."
She regarded him with her hazel eyes that were so like Alexandra's. "I don't believe that. If people are gonna fuck up, then they fuck up. If they're gonna come around eventually, then they do. Everything else is just time."
Bobby didn't want to believe that, either, but he admired the simplicity.
"Is that what you do for a living?"
"What's that?"
"Try to save people. A doctor?" she guessed.
"No."
"Shrink?"
"God, no," he chuckled.
"Good, 'cause you might need one yourself," she teased, and bumped his shoulder with her own.
He liked her laugh, but would never tell her. "I'm a police Detective."
She eyed him for a long moment, sizing him up with more interest. "You come lookin' to check the permits or somethin'? Jerry runs a clean place. Take my word for it."
Goren finished another drink. "I don't give a fuck about the permits. Or Jerry," he sniffed, ordering more liquor.
"I believe it." They sat in silence for a few minutes, nursing their drinks. "So what do you want?" she tried. "It's obviously not small talk, and if y'wanted a lap dance, you'd have sat closer to the stage. What's the secret?"
Not that long ago, he had been strapped to a table in a prison, eyeball-deep in his own raving madness, practically crying for a mother he no longer had. And this woman wanted to know why he didn't look like a man who wanted a lap dance. Bobby swallowed his drink and relished the burn of the liquor while he searched for an answer.
What did he want? He wanted Donny back. He wanted his mother. He wanted his partner to be proud of him, to not have to put up with the pitying looks the rest of One-PP gave her when they thought he wasn't paying attention. More than all of that, in that moment in that muted shitty strip bar, Bobby wanted to be a man who looked like he wanted . . . something.
Downing his drink, Bobby screwed his eyes shut and let out a sigh that was also half a groan. "C'mere." His big hands reached for her without waiting for a response. He knew she'd let him.
The petite woman fit in his lap with room to spare. She remained silent, merely curious where it was heading. When Goren parted his knees, Kelli instinctually settled her thighs over his leg. God, he was big. The flex of his leg muscle alone sent a rush of goosebumps through her. With his hands still heavy on her hips, he fixed his gaze at her waist and gently encouraged her to rock.
Bobby shut his eyes again, focusing on his sense of touch as the club drifted away. He could feel the clench and release of her leg muscles, the thin outlined ridge of the pair of short shorts she had on, and before long the insistent jut of her hard clit.
He wanted to get it out of his system.
He let out another soft, sighing groan which spurred Kelli to grind harder against him. She was soaking her shorts, and soon it was another sensation he acknowledged. Fingers fluttered curiously over where he'd grown hard inside his pants.
"Tell me your name,' Kelli murmured near his ear, still chasing her pleasure while his femoris muscle battered her clit.
"Robert."
She cupped him, stroking him as best she could through the unforgiving material of his pants, allowing herself for just a moment to imagine what it would be like to let the hulk of a cop fuck her with what she assumed was a proportionately hulking cock. It drew a muffled whimper from her, which in turn made his cock twitch.
It was just another Tuesday night, and Kelli was about to come on this guy's leg. She smirked and leaned in to his ear again.
"Tell me her name," she breathed.
He responded 'Whose?" But he knew.
"The woman you're picturing dripping all over your thigh," she chuckled. "It's ok, I'll let you call me that - whatever it is."
She increased pressure against where her hand was still keeping his interest up. Bobby was hard, a little drunk, exhausted; his eyes rolled in pleasure and sensory overload.
"Alex," he confessed. He licked his lips. "Alexandra."
She matched the rhythm of her rocking to the stroke of her hand over his bulge. "Alexandra," she echoed, and her voice, so like his partner's, was what did him in.
The smug satisfaction in feeling him stiffen and grunt beneath her got Kelli off, trembling on his thigh as she left the evidence on his pants. She gave him a few minutes before she backed off of his lap, still smiling personably. There was a swig left of Bobby's drink and she slaked her dry throat with it.
"Come back any time, Robert," she said quietly. A moment later and she was on her feet, walking toward the back of the room where the club dissolved into dressing rooms and bathroom stalls.
Bobby looked around a bit sheepishly, wondering if others had been watching, but found the room still just a dim getaway full of people looking to escape themselves. Scrubbing a hand over his face, he decided he would get his credit card back from the bartender and go home.
Maybe he would call Alex when he got there.

Caught in the Act: Daily Microbial Movement that Possibly Changed the World
Dear AGU,
Modern-day benthic microbial mats resembling those of early Earth find refugia in Lake Huron’s low-oxygen, high-sulfur, submerged sinkholes. For the very first time, we gathered time-lapse images of motile, phototactic purple-pigmented cyanobacteria, and chemotactic, pigment-free, chemosynthetic sulfur-oxidizing microbes indulging in diel vertical migration across the mat-sediment interface. Alternating waves of vertically migrating photosynthetic and chemosynthetic microbes respond rapidly to daily fluctuating sunlight and chemical gradients – dramatically turning the mat surface purple during the day and white during the night (diver photo shows time-lapse camera deployed over the mat at work early in the night as the mat surface is transitioning from a predominantly purple to predominantly white phase; in the background is a YSI multiparameter water quality sonde gathering water quality info in the ground water flowing over the mat world). Our time-series images visually capture a modern-day synchronized diel 1 mm migration similar to what might have been the first (The First Tango?) and largest daily mass movement of life in the Biosphere during the 3.5 billion years long Precambrian. During that time, benthic microbial motility may have played a critical role in directly optimizing photosynthesis and chemosynthesis, as well as indirectly burying carbon and oxygenating the biosphere. Findings including time-lapse videos chronicling this synchronized daily journey are now published in the February 2023 issue of Journal of Great Lakes Research.

#1879 - Cymbalaria muralis - Ivy-leaved Toadflax
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA Coliseum Ivy, Oxford Ivy, Kenilworth Ivy, mother of thousands, pennywort, and wandering sailor. Cymbalaria comes from the Latin word cymbalum,  referring to the similarity of the rounded leaves of some species to the shape of the musical instrument. The word muralis means “of walls”.
Another plant in Melbourne that was quite content on top of a wall - although in this case it was old brick rather than solid stone. On the other hand, Ivy-leaved Toadflax also grows on rock, and epiphytically, and in shade, and has been introduced to North America and other areas, so it’s clearly a robust viney weed. It was originally native to the Mediterranean region.
One of its more interesting adaptions is a phototactic response that changes after the flowers are fertilized - the stalks will bend back away from the flight and into shady areas, where the seeds will hopefully find a crevice to germinate in.

Glyphosate impairs learning in bumblebees
“With global insect decline going on at alarming rates, we have to examine the contribution of agrochemicals more closely, going beyond mere assessment of mortality rates,” says Morgane Nouvian, biologist and fellow at the Zukunftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Study for early career researchers) at the University of Konstanz. With Anja Weidenmüller and James J. Foster she investigated the impact of long-term exposure to glyphosate on locomotion, phototaxis — that is the movement in response to light — and learning abilities in bumblebees. For the researchers, non-lethal effects on fitness are equally important to insect conservation as lethal ones, as they can reduce an individual’s chances at reproduction and survival. A year ago, Weidenmüller had discovered that the collective thermal behaviour of bumblebee colonies that have been chronically exposed to glyphosate is affected when resources become scarce. Studying their ability to regulate the temperature of their brood, she found that these bumblebees cannot keep their brood warm for as long. And she warned that if they cannot maintain the necessary brood temperature, their brood will develop more slowly, or not at all. Absence of aversive learning In their current study, the biologists tested over 400 bumblebee workers. The Konstanz scientists demonstrate that bumblebees chronically exposed to glyphosate cannot associate a possible threat (aversive stimulus) with a visual cue during a differential learning task. “As far as we can see, they don’t learn at all anymore,” Nouvian sums up. In contrast, a control group of bumblebees that had not been exposed to glyphosate showed good aversive learning abilities. “The ability to associate a noxious stimulus with particular cues is a fundamental pre-requisite for survival,” says Nouvian and explains: “Through this adaptive behaviour, animals have a better chance of avoiding encounters with poisons, predators and parasites. This is why the learning impairment that we have demonstrated, caused by exposure to glyphosate, could substantially increase the mortality rate of foragers. Such depletion of the workforce would have an obvious impact on colony success, although this remains to be confirmed experimentally.” As for the experiments on locomotion and phototaxis, glyphosate exposure slightly reduced the bumblebees’ walking speed but only while they habituated to the training apparatus, and left the phototactic drive largely unaffected. However, it reduced attraction to ultraviolet light if compared to blue light. In their study, the biologists warn that even a slight shift in UV sensitivity could have broad implications for these pollinators, potentially affecting their navigation and their foraging efficiency. Risk assessment put to test Glyphosate is currently approved for use in the EU until 15 December 2023, when decision-making on the Glyphosate Renewal Group’s (GRG) application for renewal is to be finalised according to information from the European Community website. On 6 July 2023, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a press release concluding it “did not identify any critical areas of concern in its peer review of the risk assessment of the active substance glyphosate in relation to the risk it poses to humans and animals or the environment.” At the same time, EFSA reported “some data gaps […] as issues that could not be finalised or outstanding issues […].” Concluding their study, the scientists proposed their assay — the so-called yAPIS, a fully automated, high throughput apparatus — as a method to investigate the impact of agrochemicals on insects, especially pollinators, more systematically. In particular, this approach could complement the mortality rates assessments that are currently used to evaluate the toxicity of agrochemicals, by providing data about their potential non-lethal effects.

Why Are Moths Attracted to Lamps?
Apologizes for my inactivity! In the spirit of getting this blog back up and running, may I present: Snazzy Science Saturday.
Tumblr media
So why the snickity snook are moths so attracted to lamps? We're not entirely sure (when are we sure about anything in science?), but we have a pretty good guess. First, you get to learn a funky new vocabulary word...
PHOTOTAXIS
"Phototaxis is the scientific term for any kind of directional movement that responds to a light source. Scientists consider moths and other common winged insects positively phototactic because they fly toward light sources." -Plunketts.net
So when you move your laundry basket only to see a cockroach scuttle out, bounded to get away from the light, this would be a negatively phototactic organism. As would be vampires.
ANYWAYS GREAT we have a name for it. Moths are positively phototactic. But why do moths behave this way?
The reason may lie in everyone's favorite: evolution!
According to National Geographic, moths implement something known as Transverse Orientation. This is a process of orientation that allows moths to navigate by the light of the moon. The moth thinks (creative liberty taken): the moon will always reflect off my beady little eyes at the same angle. If I know where the moon is, I can then roughly gauge where my fuzzy body should be in order to navigate in a straight line. Pretty nifty!
BUT THEN:
LAMPS.
Tumblr media
So now we've got LAMPS and that's no fun because LAMPS are not the MOON. Now, instead of the top picture, you get something more like the bottom one (CREDIT: Zenodo).
Tumblr media
The moth's evolutionary impulses go haywire when bombarded with artificial light. Sadly for this little guy, this attraction to lightbulbs is not so bright. It makes them fairly easy to spot by predators (and by particularly mean humans...just kidding it is okay).
But as with all things in science, this is just a theory a game theory. According to Plunketts.net:
"Light bulbs didn’t exist while moths evolved, but manmade fires have existed for some 400,000 years. Given that moths usually die when they’re attracted to light, it seems like they should've evolved out of the habit."
So who knows!
Do you have any other ideas as to why moths may be attracted to light?
Here is a cute lil moth for reading the whole post:

Note
fun fact: some moths are not attractive to light at all! the phenomenon is known as "positive phototaxis", but its worth noting that some moth species are negatively phototactic and seem repelled by light. the causes are still not known, as it could be a number of things. also, if you want to learn a little more about moths, i think Moths: a complete guide to biology and behavior (David C. Lees and Alberto Zilli) could be a good read! it's a smithsonian book and while i haven't read all of it, it's been extremely informative to me!
Good explanation and that book is definitely going on my wishlist :D

Discord Weekly Drabble Challenge Prompt: Closure -----------------------------
[note: these are intended to follow The Game of Us, as tiny glimpses of what happens to the archangels after they leave the Empty in that fic; as such, there are four drabbles]
-----------------------------
Michael:
Thirty years on, the creator of the universe dies as he lived: without fanfare.
Two mourners stand alone beside the coffin. Gravediggers idle nearby, shovels at their shoulders, unaware that their charge was responsible for crafting the ground in which they would soon inter him.
“It feels... wrong,”  Michael murmurs. “To have outlived him.”
Adam steps closer, hands twisting together. "Humans expect to outlive our parents," he whispers back.
“Does that make it any easier?”
Adam considers. "No."
He steps forward, and brushes fingertips across the lid.
Goodbye, Father, Michael thinks, and leaves Chuck Shurley behind for the last time.
Lucifer:
Michael came for him, in the end. In the end? No: that day could never have been an end. From the moment he lets the rage and desolation melt away, there is only a quiet beginning.
Lucifer comes to awareness on his knees outside a door, vessel somehow both new and familiar. Memory of a hand on his shoulder, words still ringing in his ears: you are worth saving.
The door opens. Two faces peer out at him: one new, one familiar. And somehow, neither surprised.
“You made it,” Gabriel grins, and she and Sam pull him to his feet.
Raphael:
“These souls need a real guardian. Someone who cares,” Jack says. He presses a key into Raphael’s hands. The metal is ink-dark, burning cold. Their nephew looks up, eyes pleading, patient. “They were promised peace. They won’t have it without you.”
Blackness and the sighs of the unquiet dead. That’s all this place is, all it has ever been; a resting place, but never restful. Raphael remembers yearning for rest. Knows — from experience — what not getting it feels like.
“Will you watch over them?”
They won’t have it without you.
Raphael closes their hand around the key.
Wordlessly, they nod.
Gabriel:
It’s a beautiful day.
Lucifer watches the clouds, Sam watches Lucifer, and Gabriel — Gabriel is watching them both. Lucifer’s face, turned up to the sun like a phototactic plant, basking motionless and peaceful. And Sam, silent, cautious, posture loose, wearing a tentative acceptance of the moment.
Watching them is always rewarding: they make the best faces when they don’t know she’s looking. She might never have seen them again, seen anyone again. She tries not to take this for granted.
As though hearing her thoughts, Sam’s eyes flick over to hers, softly questioning.
Gabriel winks, playful, and doesn’t look away.

Light
She shines
She Shines Bright
As she should
To share the warmth like a hug
To those ones who are in need
The ones that feed off of that energy
They appear like the insects that fly to your fluorescence
A guide to the phototactic
A light to the masses
You will feel constantly attacked and
Like the sailors who need the lighthouse
Like the jailers who don’t wanna see the lights out
Like the failures you went through with doubt
She still shines
She shines bright
No one can dim the light
As they can try
It’s like the sunrise in her eyes
The honey she spits
It’s smooth and it sticks
Like ether and a heater
Now it’s summer time and she’s hot
Who will dare bring ice
You need glasses to see these northern lights
You should bring your real eyes to be more precise
If you cannot handle the heat
Take a backseat
For she shines
She shines bright like light
-Cielamor**
I wrote this for just one of my friends in mind but I truly believe all of my friends are lit😌

Sea turtles are phototactic, meaning they are attracted to light. This is where the ability to locate the shores they lay their eggs on comes from, as they are guided by the moonlight. They avoid shadows since that is where predators most likely lurk.
