DYK… (part 2)
Tumblr media
tiger sharks are one of the shark species most likely to attack a human unprovoked, and is considered one of the most dangerous sharks in the world for that reason.
tiger sharks are one of the "Big Three" aggressive shark species, along with great white sharks and bull sharks.
tiger sharks are apex predators meaning they don't have many natural predators. In fact one of the only known predators to this species are humans and killer whales. A killer whale is much larger in size and weight, which allows it to overpower the shark.

The strange world of brine pools.
Tumblr media
Deep under the sea, there are pools of water, separate from the rest of the ocean. Created when water seeps down through the ocean floor, mixing with long buried salt deposits, resulting in these highly saline pools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brine itself is uninhabitable for the vast majority of creatures. The lack of oxygen and extremely high salt content quickly sends just about any creature that enters them into toxic shock.
Still, these pools are oases of life on the sparsely populated abyssal plane. The mineral-rich water provides much-needed nutrients to life surrounding these toxic waters.

Given today's events, I think we need some crab facts
There are more than 4,500 known species of crabs
A crabs pregnancy only lasts 1-2 weeks and they lay 1,000 to 2,000 eggs!
The smallest crab is the Pea Crab(Left) which at max is 0.47 inches. On the other hand you have the Japanese Spider Crab(right) which can get up to twelve feet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now Yeti Crabs are one of my favorite types because they live on hydrothermal vents at the very bottom of the ocean. And they stick together by the thousands, each white dot is in fact a crab.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's another fun thing about these guys, and it's actually where they get their names from. They have little hairs covering their claws which they slowly wave back and forth encouraging bacteria growth, then they eat that bacteria!
Of course this list would be incomplete if I didn't tell you the most important fact,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crabs dance.
All for different reasons, spreading eggs, gloating over a victory, to woo potential mates, even to attract food.
So post crab rave, technically, it's accurate

Octopus are smarter than you think.
Intelligence is often thought to be calculated by looking at the brain, but octopus are proving to be an exception to this.
Tumblr media
They have almost the same number of neurons as a dog (~500 million), but only 1/3rd of them are in their head. The rest are actually in their arms. This is also why it often looks like their arms have a mind of their own— they do! Each one acts independently and is capable of tasting, touching, and moving without the main brain.

The garden-like coral and sponge habitats of Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary are a great spot for our octopus friends to stretch out a leg… or eight.
What is your favorite octopus fact? Ours is that they have three hearts, just enough to be fully octo-pied with a love for the bank!

woowww i love sea creachures!!! tell me about any of them PLEASE any you recently learned about that you found very interesting please
My favourite sea creature is sharks so I'll obviously talk about those since I learn something new about them all the time :)
Sand tiger sharks eat eachother in the womb! The strongest shark uses the others as food to grow? But when they are born they don't eat other tiger sharks again
All sharks have scale like skin called dermal dentricals (they are more teeth than scale) which they have to help them swim faster and quieter. Whale sharks have these over their eyes! There are six types of dermal dentricals
The largest shark is the whale shark and the smallest is the dwarf lantern shark
There's a shark that can glow in the dark called the kitefin shark
There are over 400 species of shark
Dogs, mosquitos, deer, cows, bees, snakes and jellyfish kill more people than sharks yearly.
The fastest shark is the mako shark
Sharks can either be oviparous or viviparous. Oviparous sharks lay eggs call mermaid's purses and viviparous sharks give birth to live young
The frilled shark inspired one of Godzilla's forms (I know nothing about Godzilla but I think it's called shin godzilla 2nd form)
The greenland shark is the oldest living shark that can live for as long as 300+ years! They also can eat polar bears
Sharks have been around since before trees
Some sharks like the basking shark eat plankton, some eat meat and the bonnethead shark eats sea grass
Sharks eat/go for the weakest fish in the ocean most of the time. So they help keep populations in control and rid of sickness.
The spinner shark is known to jump out if the water often while spinning around (hence the name)
I hope that's what you wanted♡
If not I'll be happy to do more!

I want to be ur friend so bad but I am AWKWARDDDDD.
Anyways, lesser known facts about great whites? If not, cookie cutter shark my beloved
DWWW IM SO AWKWARD TOO BUT ID LOVE LOVE LOVE TO BE YOUR FRIEND PLSSS SEND ME A MESSAGE OR SMTH (if ur comfortable obvi 😭) AAAAH
although most sharks are cold-blooded, great whites are actually warm blooded! this means they can regulate their own body temperature!!
2. greats whites eyes are GLOW IN THE DARKKKK. they have a layer of reflective cells behind the retina which allows them to see better in the dark. COULD THEY GET ANY COOLER???
3. another biological feature of great whites is their highly toxic blood. research has shown that the levels of arsenic and mercury in their blood are so high that it would kill most animals. great whites however, seem to be adapted to this toxicity and are unharmed by it.

My current favorite animals are these guys, Sea Angels! They are a type of marine snail that emerged 130 million years ago 👴🏼🐌
Tumblr media
They remind me of fairies or hummingbirds
They’re born with shells, which they lose as they mature. They also produce a deterrent to ward off fish that want to eat them, and a crustacean called amphipods will carry them around as a sort of shield.
Tumblr media
Look how cool they are when they eat! They eat sea butterflies by pushing tentacles from their heads that have hooks and barbs on them so they can pull the sea butterflies out of their shells.
