Lailah (Heb. לַיְלָה, Laylāh, meaning "Night") is an angel in some interpretations in the Talmud and in some later Jewish mythology, associated with the night, as well as conception and pregnancy.

According to the midrash (Tanhuma Pekudei 3), Lailah is a teacher to souls before their birth. Legend says that Lailah lights a candle allowing the spirit to see from one end of the earth to the other, and then teaches the spirit the entire Torah. As soon as the human infant is born, though, Lailah lightly strikes the child’s lip, and the child forgets everything.

Although technically not a goddess, Lilith is an important mythological figure in the Judaic, Christian and Mesopotamian traditions. She is mentioned in the Bible, in the book of Isaiah , the Aplphabet of Ben Sira and various Sumerian and Babylonian texts. Her legend springs from rabbinical attempts to explain the differences in the creation story of the book of Genesis I and II. The name Lilith contains the Sumerian root word for “night”.

On the opposite end of the destructive tendencies attributed to Lilith, is the angel Lailah. Lailah is the only feminine angel in Jewish mythology. She governs conception and is responsible for carrying out the fate of each child from womb to tomb. Once an infant is born, she touches the space between your upper lip and nose, which causes you to forget the lessons of the previous life. The name Lailah also contains the Sumerian root word for night; and she is credited for helping Abraham battle the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Lilith and Lailah represent the dichotomy of lust and procreation, but both are Night beings. Creation comes from the womb of darkness.
